Hope blinked ''Initiation?''

A few days had passed since Hope and Endymion joined Fairy Tail and settled down in Magnolia. Both had been unsure where they could stay but Makarov solved the problem by offering his guest room, assuring that they would be more than welcome to it. Things changed quite a bit for the two of them, now they were getting accustomed to the idea of having a home and a family. It was especially profound for Hope, who had very little experience on that front.

''Yeah, your first job as a member of Fairy Tail-see how we really do things around here.'' Gildarts explained and the boy nodded in understanding. He'd heard quite a few stories but that was nothing compared to hands on experience after all.

''We were just gonna go find a job-you gotta come with us!'' Natsu exclaimed.

''Aye!'' Happy chimed in.

Gray gave them an annoyed look ''And what if he wants to go with someone else?''

''Like who, you?'' Natsu sneered.

''Yeah! Got a problem with that? I'll definitely do a hell of a lot better than you, lizard breath!''

''In your dreams, freezer pants!''

Everyone sighed as the fire and ice mages began butting heads, already too used to the duo's never ending rivalry. One thing they would never understand was their incredible knack on each other's nerves.

''They're even fighting over this...'' Happy knew Hope got along well with the both of them but come on!

''Natsu. Gray.''

The far too familiar tone had them freezing at once. Slowly craning their necks to look behind them, finding an incredibly annoyed Erza. Any attempts to get away were foiled once she reached out, grabbing both their ears.

''How many times do I have to say this? Enough fighting, it's utterly pathetic! Hope is free to choose whoever he wishes to go with and it has nothing to do with either of you-so grow up!'' She smacked them both on the head, leaving them groaning

''A-aye...''

Hope and Endymion were still amazed at how she could instill terror within them so easily. Even Makarov couldn't seem to get the two to behave like Erza did on a regular basis.

''Ah, thank you, Erza-san...'' The pointed look she gave Hope left him sure he was missing something. He didn't find her as scary as many of the others did so it just had him wondering what he did wrong.

Then it clicked ''...right-Erza.''

She smiled and nodded. He was still formal with them quite often and they were taking time to break him out of the habit. Well all things considered, he was born and raised a noble, some habits just tended to last long, she supposed.

'Why don't we see what jobs there are, Hope?' Endymion suggested.

Nodding, the boy headed to the request board...

''Ha, I won!''

'Enough gloating.'

Sharing Endymion's annoyance, Levy shot Natsu a look ''Would you grow up?''

''I think you might be barking up the wrong tree, Levy.'' Happy deadpanned while Lisanna shook her head in exasperation.

In the end, Hope chose a job that entailed finding some missing people in a town not too far from Magnolia. They were faced with mysterious weather patterns of sudden heat and cold. Also, rock and ice monsters that apparently appeared out of nowhere and they were at a loss of what to do.

With some of their friends busy and thanks to some helpful advice from Erza, Fairy Tail's newest members were joined by Natsu, Happy, Lisanna and Levy.

''Anyway, you guys said you know something about this town?'' Happy recalled.

'We've been there before.' Endymion informed. 'Its temperature does get a bit extreme from time but supposedly that's because of all the ethernano and rare minerals that can be found there.'

''It sort of sounds like we'd have to be ready to keep adapting. Natsu doesn't have much problem with heat or cold to a certain point and your powers can be diverse. I figured having the variety would help.'' Hope felt bad about leaving Gray out, especially with Natsu gloating back there (he wasn't impressed with the boy either). Thankfully, the creation wizard had been understanding once Hope explained his reasoning and they agreed to take a job together later.

Levy began to smile ''So you thought that far ahead? That's great.''

''Well, there's no sense in doing this if we don't give it our all.'' Hope reasoned.

''There you go, you're already off to a good start.''

Lisanna nodded ''We can do it together so let's make sure this job's a success.''

''Yeah!''

One train ride and an intense bout of motion sickness for Natsu later, they had reached their destination. The first thing they noted about the town was how cold and subdued it was. Seeing how certain areas appeared frozen over, they attributed that to the frigid weather. It hadn't taken them long to find the client, who had been happy to lend them clothes for the cold, which he explained had set in this morning. The ice monsters had returned last night and the missing people had apparently left to find out how to stop all this.

He also took the group to where they were last seen, a big hill before the forest outside of town. Here were also signs of the cold and snow setting in...

''This is it?'' Happy blinked. ''Natsu, does anything stand out?''

A headshake ''I'm not sure if it's just because of the snow but I don't smell anything unusual...maybe they got lost somewhere up in the forest?''

''It couldn't be-those guys knew the terrain more than most.'' Levy took a moment to think. ''He did say how people were too scared to try looking around here for real. In case the monsters come back, so maybe...''

'Give me a moment.' Endymion began as he and Hope started looking around. The latter's eyes glowed as he accessed his partner's power, one of his eyes taking a silver hue then. The phoenix had very sharp eyes that could let him see long distances if he wanted to, it even helped break through illusions. With their special link also allowing Hope the use of the ability, no doubt the two could pick on something many were likely to miss.

And indeed 'There! It's really well hidden but there's a cave beneath those trees. There's a hidden passageway hidden with magic. I'll show you the way.'

He did just that, once they reached said spot. A carefully fired burst of fire magic from Levy's Solid Script magic was enough to break through the spell, revealing a long tunnel.

''Wow, that looks like it goes a long way...'' Happy trailed off.

''Yeah...'' Lisanna raised an eye, they couldn't even an end in sight. ''...that's weird. I thought all this trouble started just three days ago counting today. Could someone really set something like this up so fast?''

''...They wouldn't have to-look closer.'' Levy moved a bit of the snow away, revealing a big block underneath. It had clearly been there for sometime and someone had taken to carve something on it.

''Then...?''

''Yeah, I think our troublemaker's just taking advantage of something that's already here.'' The blue haired girl remarked, looking pensive. ''Hope, Endymion-can you...''

She never got further, for an impatient Natsu then cried out ''Come on, what're we standing around here for? We're never gonna get anywhere like this-let's just...'' Just as he was about to run, Hope grabbed his scarf, making him splutter.

''Rushing off is a really, really bad idea. If this place is what I think it is...''

Natsu blinked ''Wait, you mean you were here before?''

''No, but...supposedly this town used to be part of a powerful kingdom a long time ago. The kingdom fell apart in a war but there's a few stories that describe a labyrinth used as a defensive measure against intruders. Some of them never made it out. The labyrinth was suspected to be destroyed but no one was sure...it was definitely damaged a lot in the war but no one found any sign of the magic used to keep it going. It's really vague but with this location...''

'Yes, it could very well be it.' Endymion agreed. 'Careful, all of you. I can tell that this place was very well built and I'm fairly sure it's hiding something so kindly don't rush off again.'

''No problem-I'll keep an eye on Natsu.'' Happy offered while the dragon slayer grumbled. ''Any idea where we go from here?''

'Let's see...'

Natsu found that, despite his chagrin, the phoenix's concern were proven accurate. They found out that place actually held a few troublesome traps the hard way when what seemed like an ornamental axe almost cut him and Happy in half. Any complaints he might have had about the group's pace died after he almost stumbled into an area which had a myriad of arrows hidden in the wall, Hope quickly halted the trap with Stop Flow before getting him out of there.

'Now...I think that certifies our cause for caution, yes?' Endymion demanded.

Natsu gulped, the tone sounded calm...but why did it remind him of Erza so much?

He didn't get around to think on it as the phoenix suddenly began warning them about something...

Before they knew it, something flashed, blinding them for a few moments. When they could see again, it turned out they were surrounded by a myriad of ice constructs in various shapes, there were a variety of animals, objects and even weapons. Hope and Levy found themselves boxed in between some ice walls and a number of ice axes and swords.

''Wha-where'd all this come from?!'' Happy yelped.

The weapons were launched at once, Levy quickly used her magic to conjure a wall to fend them off. Hope unleashed a number of beams to destroy the constructs before them. Similarly, Natsu destroyed the constructs in his way with a furious flurry of fire attacks while Lisanna defended Happy and took out more with her Animal Soul: Penguin. Natsu and Levy wrapped things up with a final fire attack, reducing the constructs to nothing.

''What the heck was that?!''

Hope noticed a pair of broken lacrima nearby amidst the remnants of the trap ''...We walked into another set up.''

'I imagine it was set to activate if anyone triggered the trap.' Endymion added, having noticed them flare to life earlier. 'At least we know we're on to something.'

''Yeah, let's keep going!'' Natsu called enthusiastically.

With Endymion keeping a sharp eye out, the group was able to make headway well. They encountered more constructs along the way, taking them down with little trouble. It hadn't been too long before Endymion was able to detect what seemed to be the people they were tasked to find...

''...Let me guess, we've got another trap waiting in the wings, right?'' Even as she said it, Lisanna wasn't even sure it was worth questioning.

'That's what I was getting at, yes.' The phoenix admitted. 'It seems there are two halls before we reach their location. They seem to be blocked by shields of magic originating from the labyrinth. Hope, perhaps Zero Ray could help.' Zero Ray was the Memoria spell that could break down and even allow the caster to absorb the power the target.

Nodding, the boy tried applying the spell, the silver blast of power doing next to nothing as the shields were regenerating. ''...What is all this?''

Levy tilted her head a little, eyeing the letters carved on the stones ''Didn't we see some words carved on a few of the walls?''

''What do we do, guys?'' Happy frowned.

''Hold on...'' Levy stopped to think. ''...I have an idea. Hope, Endymion does anything about that labyrinth in the story stand out? Do you remember anything unique about it?''

''Ah, supposedly this was called the perpetual cloister. It was there for so long that it left many feeling safe from intruders...'' Hope recalled. ''...they also called that old kingdom a lustrous gateway-partly because of this place. Does this help?''

''Oh, definitely.'' She was heading to the stone letters, knowing her suspicion was accurate.

Hope realized her plan ''So you want to...?''

''It's worth a shot. Now...'' She tapped one letter and it glowed, quickly doing so with more in seconds. A few of the shields faded away in an instant. ''...yes!''

Levy proceeded to tap the letters for the word lustrous and this proved to be the trick to opening up their path. Lisanna smiled ''Nice catch, Levy!''

''Aye!'' Happy added.

The girl beamed ''It was nothing-now come on.''

They headed into the next hall, finding that it was already quite a bit of mess-as if a battle had happened here recently. A possible reason for that appeared to be the rock vulcan like creature prowling the area. It immediately charged once it noticed them but Hope forced it to halt with Stop Flow before swiftly creating beams that fell upon the construct like hail. This was Thousand Ray.

''I'll wrap this up! Fire Dragon's...'' Natsu inhaled deeply. ''...Roar!''

He unleashed a fierce blast of fire which swept over the construct, melting most of it in seeconds, leaving it to fall apart.

''Nice work!'' Happy beamed.

The boy was about to respond but then ''Hello?'' An unknown voice called. ''Is anyone there?''

Natsu quickly followed the source to a door at the far end of the hall as the voice called out again. That had to be one of the missing people. ''Hey, back up man, I'll bust you right out of there.''

''Right.'' Natsu could barely hear footsteps from beyond the thick door, which prompted him to act. A few strikes of his Fire Dragon's Iron Fist broke through in seconds.

There were four men inside the room, surprised to see the young group of mages. Lisanna quickly explained the situation and they nodded in understanding.

''I see...well, you certainly were unexpected but I'm not about to complain. Well done getting this far, kids. We really owe ya!''

''We heard you four left to get to the bottom of this-did you get some answers?'' Levy inquired.

''Yeah...'' A scoel ''...we know where the lowlife behind this is. Can you all help? I can't stand to leave like this now. Who knows what he'll do if things continue.''

Natsu and Hope shared glances with the others and they shared a nod before the first spoke ''No prob!''

''There's no point leaving things like this, we'd be glad to help.'' The latter added.

''Thanks! Follow me!''

The mastermind behind all this trouble seemed to have decided to leave the men to die as he hardly even thought of concealing his plans. In fact, they had discovered a secret area that lead to a hall right where he was at the moment.

The man, clad in robes with strange elaborate patterns, seemed to have been in the middle of some spell as there were odd seals glowing around the chamber.

''Wha-what is this?!'' He growled at the four prisoners. ''I should've known-I left you alive because killing would be far too troublesome for my plans but you still get in the way! Do you think those little brats can help you? Pathetic!''

''Let's see who's pathetic here, pal-Fire Dragon's Claw!'' Natsu charged.

The dark mage harrumphed, waving a hand before a spell circle appeared, creating a blistering wave of cold that almost knocked him down. Natsu flipped back, regaining his balance in time with a growl.

''Natsu, I don't think he's been here for no reason-look at all these.'' Happy gestured at the magic circles around them. ''They can't be here for show.''

The dark mage stomped a foot, creating spires of earth which they were forced to guard against. He laughed ''Just as well you came then, I'll be happy to test my new powers out! Eat this!''

He summoned a powerful blizzard before creating spires of rock which he launched at them. Hope froze the spires before they came any closer while the rest attacked just as he also kept up the offense.

Lisanna assumed her rabbit take over, turning into a big purple bunny. She quickly gathered the four ex-prisoners and Happy into her arms before leaping away and getting them to safety. The girl then jumped back down and used her momentum to aim a strong kick but the man raised a slab of earth to fend her off, directing it to blast her back.

''Solid Script: Wind!'' Levy created a bright green word which unleashed a strong gale that took the enemy by surprise. Lisanna assumed her Bird Take over to scratch him with her claws.

When the enemy fired numerous rock blasts at the two girls, Hope sliced them all apart easily with his swords, reducing them to little than rubble. Natsu seized on the opportunity to stun him with an Iron Fist attack.

The battle kept going at a similar pace, despite the group getting quite a few good shots in, the enemy somehow kept getting back up. He was skilled at using earth and ice magic to fend the group off, even using more constructs but the group handled those with ease.

''Wait, I remember-they say the ambient magic here could be used to power people up through a process. That must be why he's here!'' One of the former prisoners exclaimed.

''Is that why he was so tough?'' Happy blinked.

Natsu grunted ''He's a cheat, plain and simple.''

''Oh get over yourself, boy. Unlike you pathetic light guild types, I have no intention of wastng time on pointless morals-victory is all I seek!'' The enemy retorted.

''Well, you ain't gonna get it!''

The dark mage summoned another construct but they were more than ready for the challenge...

Hope swiftly threw a sphere of light which flew to the enemy's face and released a brilliant flash. The enemy cried out in pain recoiled, clutching at his eyes. The boy quickly found some of the magic circles powering him up. Using his Memoria magic, he reduced the circle's time to nothing, erasing it from existence.

''Why you...'' The dark mage snapped, knowing that had been foiled.

But he had no time to do a thing as Hope trapped within four swiftly, spinning pillars of light which closed in on him. In moments, he was sent up in the air as the attacks hit home. This was Flash Rondo.

''Good going! Solid Script: Thunder!'' Levy cast.

The man barely managed to dodge the blast coming his way, but in doing so he completely missed Natsu gearing up to attack.

''Eat this, Fire Dragon's Wing Attack!''

The enemy tried to fend the fiery whips with his magics but the shields he could raise quickly fell apart. Hope landed the final blow, taking him down with a swift strike of his blades.

''All right!'' Happy cheered.

Hours later...

''...And that's how it wound up.'' Levy finished, their group had settled down to retell the others about the events. ''I mean the guy did try to make a break for it in the end but they totally made sure he wouldn't try that again. Everyone was so happy the trouble was over and the people we saved gave us a reward to show their gratitude too. But that's more or less it.''

''Oh, I see-well done.'' Bisca smiled.

''Yeah, good job-you guys are Manly!'' Elfman added.

Gray rolled his eyes but they were all too used to Elfman's mannerisms to pay the words much attention ''Anyway, so how'd it feel, guys? I remember finishing my first job here-pretty neat, huh?''

Hope nodded, smiling ''It was a little like what I used to do when we were traveling but still different...it's nice to work together with everyone...and to have some place to go back to.''

The listeners smiled and Endymion spoke 'What Hope said. That was certainly a novel experience. It makes me look forward to what may come. Though I have to say, preventing certain trouble over and over again does grate on one's nerves.'

Natsu suspected the words were aimed at him ''Hey, why you gotta say it like that?! Everything worked out, didn't it?''

'Considering that your approach to things today almost got you killed numerous times, one would think that you'd know better than to say that.'

Gray wasn't even the least bit surprised ''Please, that requires someone with common sense.''

Natsu took umbrage ''Oi, I do have common sense!''

''Yeah, right.''

''I do too-more than you. I'm not the one who's naked now!''

Gray stiffened, realizing that he had stripped again. ''Aw, dammit!''

'I thought I made it clear before, Natsu.' Endymion pressed his point. 'Simply charging into anything doesn't do any good-if anything, it just starts more problems than not. Am I clear?'

Natsu cringed at his tone ''Y-yeah...''

''What's with you?'' Elfman arched an eye.

''Endymion's scary! Like Erza level scary!''

The girl in question glared at him ''What was that?''

''Ah, I don't know about that...'' Hope started as Natsu meeped, hiding under the table. ''...but he's just worried. Things really could've been bad back there, after all.''

''Besides, it's not like he's wrong.'' Lisanna added. Natsu did get into a lot of trouble because he was impatient after all.

Happy spoke up then ''Can we go eat? I'm getting hungry...''

''Good idea-it's almost dinner time anyway. Let's do just that.'' Makarov returned.

A few months later, when Hope and Endymion arrived at the guild...

''And stay out!''

There was Mira throwing a few of the boys out It looked like they had been in a brawl or something, many of them were slumped and bruised, groaning. A number of people were giving them dirty looks nearby, to the duo's confusion.

''Um, what's going on?'' Hope asked Macao, who scowled.

''The idiots wound up getting into a big fight in the kitchen. Gray said something about stopping Natsu from causing trouble and the next thing we know, they ruined a whole lot of the food we have here. They could have destroyed the storage if Mira hadn't seen them in time.''

''You selfish fools!'' Erza scolded. ''It's bad enough that you insist on this foolish brawling and now you even go so far? We may not be able to eat for hours because of you-what do you have to say for yourselves?!''

''Does it matter, Tin can? The only thing that could make this better would be if they can replace the food they ruined.'' Mira pointed out. She was among the few present who could cook but she had no intention of doing so just to make up for their mistakes.

''Ah, if you don't mind...'' Hope knew he had a way that could likely fix the problem but for it to work for sure, the sooner he took action the better. ''...I might have something to help with that.''

The white haired girl was about to ask how but then remembered his magic ''Think your powers are up to snuff, kid?''

''It's worth a try, right?''

In the end, Hope found that he was able to repair a good number of the damaged dishes with the restoration spell Fortuna Veil, which reversed their time before the brawl. Except there wasn't much else he could do since the rest of the food was tossed in the trash.

At least that was what they thought...

Hope surveyed the ingredients which had survived the chaos ''Looks like that's everything...''

'It would seem so-thankfully, they haven't gotten to the storage so that's safe. Do you think you can work with this?' Endymion inquired, the boy responded positively after a moment.

''Work with...'' Elfman blinked, realizing what that meant. ''...Hope, you can cook?''

A nod ''I think I might be able to replace at least some of the dishes...''

Mira seemed intrigued ''All right, let's see it.''

One thing they learned that morning was that Hope really underplayed his skills.

Curious, Happy, Natsu and Elfman decided to sample the food he was working on. They paused in surprise, making the onlookers wonder if the taste was bad. But then...

''Oh, wow!''

''So good!''

Hope couldn't help but smile as a few more began to taste it, seeing how pleased they were. He hadn't had the chance to cook for others in a while so he wondered what they would make of this. It was nice to see them enjoying themselves.

Hope let out a breath as he sat outside. Breakfast wound up being a bit more overwhelming than he expected. Thankfully, some of the girls offered to help and it was off to a success.

'That went well.' Endymion could tell how troublesome things could've been with that little food left. A good number of people in the guild seemed to have voracious appetites and since most of those present could hardly be trusted in the kitchen, they were bound to go hungry for sometime. 'Though I have to wonder just what those boys were thinking-I highly doubt we could've gotten through the morning without another disaster if we let them help.'

''I think that's what everyone agreed on...''

''Definitely.'' Hope turned in time to see Erza make her way over. ''Again, thank you for helping back there. It's really appreciated. I'm curious though, where did you learn to cook like that?''

''I picked it up.'' The boy admitted. ''I more or less had to take care of myself for long now, I figured I just had to learn. It was rough-I messed up a lot but I've come to enjoy cooking.''

This reminded the scarlet haired girl of just why he was mature and responsible beyond his young years. He had to be, he really had no one else to help him for so long.

She remembered how Endymion admitted that it took him some time to get used to the results of the experiment. He hadn't gotten along with Hope at first, the phoenix had merely wished to stay alone, being bitter and resentful of everyone. Over time, Hope managed to get through to him, showing that everything could work out for the best if they kept trying and didn't give up.

''I was wondering...don't you get tired of wearing that?'' Hope nodded at her breastplate. ''You wear this armor so much but it seems really heavy and uncomfortable to me.''

''Oh, it isn't-I prefer it. In fact, I just don't feel right without it.''

''Why? Ah...'' Erza appeared uncomfortable at this, as if she had said too much. ''...Forget I asked.''

She spared him a grateful look ''You're really changing...you're so much more open and upfront-or maybe this is what you're really like all along.''

''I'm not sure...'' Hope looked down for a moment. ''...I...I've had trouble trustng people for sometime. I try not to let it get in the way but...I'm still scared. After what they did...''

''Someone really hurt you in the past, haven't they?'' The question was unexpected. ''I know the feeling...I think it's safe to say a number of us have been there at one point.''

''Right...'' He acknowledged, aware that many in Fairy Tail had sad pasts as well. He really didn't feel up to talking about what happened. The accident with the memory spell had provided actually provided a boon, people who really understood. That actually made him feel better about it than he had in a long time.

Makarov and Gildarts had advised to try opening up about this, even if just a little and he had promised to try. Besides, he knew he could trust them with the truth ''...I don't remember much of anything but my birth family-I heard I was supposed to go back to Aetheria after things settle down...''

''Because of the rising battles back then, correct?'' She clarified. Erza had only heard the mention of it in passing but the situation in that country had really been rough-a few corrupt nobles fought for power and everything just escalated from there.

Hope nodded ''But then they came and...'' He shook his head as a few painful memories came to mind. The words died in his mouth-this was harder than he thought. ''...even after those monsters were stopped, everything was in ruins...and my guardians, the people I came to know back there...they...when they found out about the experiments-they decided that I had to die.''

''That's despicable!'' Erza scowled. How could they even think that? Hope couldn't help what they had done! Just the fact that they dared condemn this sweet and friendly boy in such a callous manner left her outraged. ''You mean they actually tried to...?''

'It was all absurd.' Endymion spat angrily. 'He just wanted to help them and yet...I can understand them being frightened of me but what they said and did to Hope back then...it's inexcusable.'

''That's...that's just...'' Erza figured that there were more details but this was obviously hard on Hope. He had respected her feelings earlier so she would extend him the same courtesy. ''...you left it at that? Did you ever even try making them answer for this?''

''...You're not the first to ask me that. I did think of getting revenge more than once.'' Hope admitted. ''It still hurts to think of those horrible days and a part of me wanted them to hurt just like they hurt me. But...what's the point? Revenge won't change anything-it won't make me feel better and...it won't bring any of what was lost back.''

''You really are strong.'' Erza returned. While the thought of getting revenge on someone who hurt a person was only natural, it took a special kind of strength to rise above that. After all, look what he had done...''The fact that you've even become something like the White Paladin is impressive.''

'That was all thanks to Hope.' Endymion's pride in his best friend was evident. The fact that Hope could find it in him to retain such kindness as to help others after all he had been through truly amazed him.

''I just didn't want to turn away when people were suffering before me.'' The boy stated with a shrug. ''Traveling was hard...but it did me a lot of good too-it reminded me of what was out there. So I know without a doubt-that even if there are bad things and bad people out there...there's also much good to counter that. Being in Fairy Tail was another reminder of that, so...even if I didn't really show it before, I'm happy to be here. I'll always be grateful to find a home with you all.''

Erza smiled, amazed at his fortitude. She was more glad than ever to have someone like him for a friend ''Well, that's the way it would always be.'' He would always have a place with them-especially if she had anything to say about it.

A while later, Hope and Endymion decided to go train in the forest once again. Hope began practicing applications of Memoria magic, working on making means to use the spell Accel Force, which allowed him to at impressive speeds.

It was just as he was practicing integrating Accel Force with one of light spells when he heard a voice ''Would ya look at that? The newbie really does work hard!''

Hope was so startled that he almost lost control of the spell. It was close to hitting the speaker, a figure dressed like a knight, wearing a mishevious grin but he barely managed to stop in time. With him wear a teen with long green hair and a brunette girl in a green dress.

''I'm so sorry! I didn't think anyone would be here now, I'm sorry!'' Hope added quickly. Endymion knew they had been there but this happened before he could warn the boy.

Come to think of it, he could've sworn he had seen them before in passing around Fairy Tail...who were they?

''To be fair, it was hardly your fault. No harm done.'' The green haired teen returned politely. ''What you were trying to pull seems to take much concentration-it's only Bickslow's loud mouth causing trouble again.''

''Hah, fine-fair enough...'' The first teen returned, acknowledging that he had messed up. ''...I was just curious to see more of the newbie we've been hearing about...''

''Newbie?'' Hope blinked, taking note of the black Fairy Tail guild mark on Bickslow's tongue. ''Wait, you're with Fairy Tail?''

''But of course.'' The girl pushed her glasses up. ''We've actually seen you a couple of months ago. You must've heard of the Raijishuu.''

''Oh!'' Hope and Endymion had indeed heard of the group, said to be one of the guild's best teams. Freed, Evergreen and Bickslow were Laxus' closest friends but they kept to themselves and they didn't come to the guild often.

Now that Hope thought about it, there was talk of them having taken a dangerous mission with Laxus over a while back. ''You've heard of me?''

''You really don't know? The fact that the White Paladin finally joined a guild is quite the news-it seems many were keeping an eye on you.'' Evergreen stated.

Hope really didn't care much for his fame, merely seeing it as a byproduct of his travels. Bickslow cocked his head ''...That's a first-don't think I've seen two souls in one body before.'' The boy's eyes widened. ''I'm a Seith mage, kid. I've been able to see souls for years now. It's as if this second soul's like a part of your magic...you're definitely a unique case.''

''Um, it's complicated.'' It was hard enough explaining hsi situation, talking about how they wound up like this was much worse.

''I'll bet. I'm beginning to see why Laxus thinks you're interesting...'' Bickslow trailed off, leaving the boy curious.

''On that subject, actually...'' Freed began. ''...I wish to thank you, Hope Sherwind. Laxus told me about your encounter during that attack, when the people just kept treating him as nothing more than the grandson of a Wizard Saint. Not only were you the first to actually see how wrong everyone was to dismiss him and disregard his feelings like that, you actually spoke up for him and called the people out on this disappointing behavior. You saw him for who he is and not simply Master Makarov's grandson-that means more than you know.''

Bickslow and Evergreen's expression grew serious, this was the first they heard of this but they could understand why such a thing made a difference to their closest friend. It had been going on for so long that it surprised them to see someone who did something about it.

''Oh, well it was nothing. I just did what I thought was right, Freed-san.'' Hope returned. ''It was only true anyway. I heard how he worked to become S-class, someone had to say it.'' Freed gave a small smile and nodded. ''Still, I have to ask-did any of you ever try talking to the others at the guild about this? I think they'd know better than to just fall in with the crowd.''

''I'm not so certain...'' The green haired teen seemed skeptic ''...but it is something to consider, I suppose. At any rate, we won't keep you any longer. Good luck with your training.''

Hope smiled back, Bickslow ruffled his hair as he turned to leave ''You know, you're not so bad, kiddo-definitely interesting!''

The boy watched them leave for a few moments, curious. He didn't know that speaking up for Laxus back then was so meaningful but he was glad it did help. The Raijinshuu weren't like what they heard but it just went to show that you really shouldn't judge people before you know them. They were always bound to surprise you.

That night...

Laxus scowled at his grandfather. Today marked three years since his father had been kicked out of the guild and it made him wonder if he could convince Makarov to talk about this so they could see where to go from here. The man had been adamant that nothing would change, to his aggravation. What was worse, he just kept quiet about the reason behind his choice like always. ''You were the one who said that we need to talk like we used to you, you old geezer but here we are and you just clam up once again. Talk about hypocrisy! I should've known better than to try...''

He stopped at the sound of footsteps, whirling around to the room's entrance to find Hope there. The blond blinked, having forgotten that he was staying in the house's guest room.

''Ah, sorry to disturb you, my boy. Looks like we really were loud.'' Makarov stated as Hope rubbed one of his eyes.

''It's okay...um, what's wrong?'' He asked tentatively. ''I only caught part of that talk but it sounded bad...''

''It's nothing for you to worry about-Laxus is being needlessly stubborn.''

''Look who's talking!'' The blond retorted.

'It seems like you're both of the same mould to me.' Endymion stated dryly.

Hope looked between the two ''Ah-it looked like you were having trouble somehow-maybe we can help?'' The two didn't respond and he went on. ''We can at least hear you both out-it could make some difference. Please, at least try.''

Endymion decided to help things along 'You mentioned something about Laxus' father? Is he a member too?'

''He was a member.'' The blond found that their presence gave him a moment to collect himself. He only encountered Hope only a few of times since the boy and his partner joined but they got along well enough. Thus, he didn't mind the boy's presence as much as he would have the others now.''The geezer kicked him out three years ago.''

Hope blinked. Makarov kicked his own son out? ''Why?''

''That's exactly what I want to know.'' He returned, surprising the duo. ''The geezer keeps shutting me out every time, all he says is that he had his reasons and he won't budge at all. I can't leave it at that and he refuses to understand. He just keeps saying it has nothing to do with me.''

'I understand where you're coming from.' Endymion admitted, Laxus' eyes widened a little at this. 'Well, it's only fair-you deserve to know. There's no sense in hiding the truth now, especially if it does more harm than good.'

''It's not...'' Makarov faltered. ''...is it that hard to trust me?''

'You're not showing much trust here yourself.' The phoenix countered. 'While I don't doubt that you have your reasons, just look at this. Is it worth causing all this anger and frustration?'

Hope bit his lip, truth be told-he did agree with his best friend. This wasn't right. He wasn't sure what he could say to help but he didn't want to leave things like this. ''...We trust you Master but that's not the problem. You're being unfair to Laxus-san, you can't say he isn't connected to this. Put yourself in his shoes, wouldn't you want to know if it was your father? I'd want to know if it was me. It must've been hard for you given who he is. What harm would it do to tell the truth? You did tell me than family could always be open and honest with each other.''

''But...I thought...'' Makarov faltered. ''...I don't want Laxus to hate his father.''

The blond was about to retort at this. Why did he act like he cared now? He wouldn't even entertain the thought of letting Ivan come back before!

Hope beat him to the punch ''Well, why shouldn't Laxus-san make that choice himself?''

Faced with all those arguments and his grandson's pointed glare, Makarov couldn't say muster anything to counter. He knew perfectly well that Laxus wouldn't let the matter rest.

As much as he hated to admit it, Endymion might have been right about them being just as stubborn as each other. And he really was tired of dealing with this situation...

The three listened as Makarov explained about how Ivan launched a terrible scheme that could've destroyed all of Magnolia simply to gain power. He was determined to steal something very important from the guild. His attempt could've destroyed many lives in the process. His utter lack of any sort of regret for his reprehensible actions forced Makarov's hand, leaving him with little choice...

Laxus listened quietly the story continued. Ivan may not have been the best father but he hadn't imagined how low he could really sink. Just thinking on how he almost those innocents all because he wanted to left him with nothing but disgust.

There was one thing he felt the need to say here ''...You're a moron, Gramps. Why the hell did you have to go that far? There was no need to hide the damn story.''

''It made sense to me at the time...I thought it was for the best.'' Makarov admitted. ''Ivan was twisted by dark feelings like greed and hate. It looked like you were coming to share some of his beliefs...I didn't want that to happen to you. I failed him as it were...''

'You didn't fail anyone.' Endymion countered sharply. 'Ivan simply made his own choices and this was the result. Parent or not, you can't be responsible for all your child does no matter how hard you try.'

''Yeah, it's not like you made him do all this stuff.'' Despite his aggravation with his grandfather, Laxus could admit as much.

Hope nodded ''You treat everyone in the guild as family. You try to do what's right by us all. Even if things do go bad...it just...happens, horrible as it may be. There's no avoiding it-but that doesn't mean it's your fault.''

Makarov wondered if it was really that simple. He had felt so guilty because of what went down with Ivan that he swore not to repeat anything close to similar with Laxus. He had been so determined to do things differently that he never considered any other way. Most of his concerns stemmed from the fact that Laxus was taking after his father more and more recently but maybe...maybe he had gone about this all wrong.

The old man was surprised as how much better he felt already. Even Laxus' expression had softened somewhat, clearly affected by this talk as well. This was the first time they could really sit down and talk in quite some time. Perhaps what they needed was a chance to clear the air all along.

''I don't know what it's like to be guild master but it must be a lot of responsibility. Still, you shouldn't have to deal with everything alone-no one should.'' Hope added.

Makarov exhaled ''Maybe so...but thanks you three. I appreciate it.''

Hope glanced at Makarov who had wandered into another room to reflect as Endymion addressed Laxus 'Maybe you two just needed time to sit down and really talk to each other.'

''Maybe...'' Laxus felt relieved. It was good to finally have some answers. While his view of his father had definitely changed, he still felt better. ''...he was right, this talk was a long time coming.''

''...Are you going to be okay?'' Hope asked after a moment.

''Yeah, still a little pissed with the both of them but that's fine.'' He stated with a shrug. ''I'm glad we got this out in the open...thanks, kid. It probably wouldn't have happened if you hadn't insisted.''

''Happy to help.'' He was about to go on but stopped to muffle a yawn.

'Well, since this is settled you should get back to sleep.' Endymion remarked. The boy nodded back-after saying good night, he returned to the guest room. 'I can't imagine today would be enough to straighten everything out but it should definitely help. But given how obstinate those two seem to be but I'd imagine we'll have to mediate for some time. It certainly is troublesome but...just something to do for our new family, hm?'

Hope concurred with a growing smile. Being with Fairy Tail was certainly a colorful experience and they had much to get used, still-he wouldn't trade it for the world.

Months later...

Lisanna had been at the park with Natsu, Happy, Hope and Endymion when her siblings came to tell her about an an emergency S-class request Mira received to deal with a creature known as the Beast in a small village not too far from Magnolia. Elfman and Lisanna were all set to go help their sister when Natsu spoke up

''Hey, can't we go with you?''

''Fat chance.'' Mira dismissed at once.

''Come on, we can totally help out!'' He insisted.

''I refuse! A Man should be able to protect his family!'' Elfman countered.

Lisanna looked between the two ''Well, why not let them? It wouldn't hurt-we might use their help.''

''Forget it.'' Her sister countered.

''Please?'' Happy pleaded.

''I'm all that's needed!'' Elfman declared.

''Ah, we might be able to help out.'' Hope began. ''You don't know what's waiting for you out there, right? Not that I'm doubting that you can handle it but what's the harm? Erza told us plenty of reasons why S-class requests aren't something that should be taken lightly. Worse comes to worse, we can just keep an eye out for you while you deal with this thing.''

''Yeah, yeah!'' Natsu and Happy agreed.

'Consider us a backup measure. We won't get in your way but we'll do what we can to help. It'll be a new experience experience for us and you'd have us to help if something does happen. How about it?' Endymion suggested.

Mira thought that over, reluctantly conceding that they might have a point. The situation was clearly dangerous if this Beast rated an S-class request. It would only be prudent to have a litle more help ''...All right, we'll wait for you here. Hurry it up.''

In the following days, Mira and Elfman would admit that they were exceedingly glad that they had brought their friends along.

One thing all of them could agree on about the job that it was a disaster.

Mira, Elfman and Natsu stayed back to fight the Beast while the rest of their group made sure to evacuate the villagers. It was so strong, brushing through many of their attacks and retaliating with ease but they kept up the fight.

''Hope, can't you freeze it?'' Happy asked frantically as the three of them flew over the battlefield.

''I tried...the spell I know can't work if the target fights if off with their own magic power.'' The boy responded tersely.

Just when it looked like Mira and Natsu's attacks could put it down, the Beast disappeared. They quickly realized it just moved really fast, lunging at Happy and Lisanna, who froze in shock at the sudden sight.

''Get out of there!'' Elfman cried.

Hope flew in to protect the two, creating the strongest Aegis he could muster. The Beast kept hammering at it and Hope took action as well, striking back with Thousand Ray. It roared, punching him towards a nearby cliff. He barely balanced himself before they hit the wall, preparing a swift counterattack. The boy created a number of big light spheres with Endymion's help, which they detonated at once. The Beast roared as it was pummeled with the various explosions and the others took the chance to attack.

Happy and Lisanna flew over to Hope as he fell to a knee, cringing from his injury. The latter helped him stand up, seeing how much pain he was in ''I'm so sorry-we messed up...''

''Aye, it's our fault...'' Happy added tearfully.

Hope was about to deny that but he was distracted when he felt something warm near his chest, realizing that it was the pendant. It was glowing...but the last time this happened was...

Happy blinked ''What does that mean?''

''There's a shard here...really close by.'' Seeing the pendant float in a certain direction. ''Happy, can you go check there, please? This should come in handy.''

''Aye!'' The cat gave a salute before going over.

Mira growled, summoning up a lot of power ''Eat this-Soul Extinctor!''

A powerful violet beam blasted the Beast down, making Natsu step closer ''Did that do it?''

''I think...'' Mira seemed wary. Elfman grinned ''I know what to do. That monster's mine!''

She realized his plan too late ''Wait, don't-!''

That was when everything really went to hell.

As the others rejoined them, Elfman tried to take over the Beast, thinking the battle was won. But they had underestimated their foe, the Beast not only fought back but it took Elfman over instead, going on a rampage.

Natsu looked alarmed when Mira explained this ''You mean it's controlling him? What do we do now?''

''No other choice but to beat it out of him. Come on, don't fall back now!'' She called.

''Right!''

The battle went on, their adversary proving to be as tenacious as ever. Lisanna gasped as it smacked Natsu and Hope with its tail ''Elf-niichan, stop!''

'Don't bother-he can't hear us now.' Endymion warned. 'Mira's right, like it or not fighting is the only thing we can do now. If anything, he'll be grateful we stopped this.'

''Yeah, but...'' Wasn't there another way? Couldn't they snap him out of it? The idea of fighting one of her siblings, treating them like an enemy was almost too much to bear.

''Hey, we can't back down now!'' Natsu added.

''Don't hesitate!'' Mira barked. ''Endymion's right, we can't stop there. Let's bail him out now-keep your head in the game. It'll kill us and everything in sight otherwise.''

Reluctant as she was, the girl nodded. She knew-as much as this hurt-Elfman needed them. She couldn't fail him now.

They kept fighting the Beast off, seemingly at a stalemate. The problem was its incredible endurance and tenacity, hampering their progress at every turn. They took a number of blows and the battle was really wearing on them, more than once, they had to change tack to help one another before the Beast seriously hurt them.

''We need some time to land heavy blows on this damn thing...'' Mira growled.

Hope placed the second shard on the pendant, seeing it quickly fit in place. ''...I think I can make it happen.'' Eyes traveled to him. ''I know how to use the shards to help. Here.''

He held a hand over the pendant, which shone. A silvery wave pulsed around the area, condensing around the Beast. At first nothing changed but it took them a moment to realize that it was slowing down. Hope kept his eyes on the monster ''The Beast's...really resistant to magic. I can at least do this much though. I can give you guys a boost in speed too.''

''Do it.'' Mira ordered, preparing herself to attack. Hope willed more of the pendant's power forth, the second shard glowed. They were surrounded by an aura of power, which indeed enabled them to move much faster. He had been working on using the pendant's power for a while now but he was thankful it was paying off-this couldn't have happened at a better time.

Mira smirked, amazed at how much lighter she felt. ''Now that's what I'm talking about-come on!''

She punched the Beast on the head, making it roar and attampt to attack her. Lisanna distracted it with her Animal Soul: Bird, scratching with her claws at its shoulder. She flew up just as Natsu cast Fire Dragon's Roar, engulfing it in a fiery vortex. They kept going at a similar pace, landing attacks faster while Hope ensured the pendant was empowering them.

''Let's try this again.'' Mira gathered more power in her hands for her best move. ''Soul Extinctor!''

The violet ray struck hard and true, making the Beast collapse. It disappeared, revealing a battered and unconscious Elfman.

''It worked!'' Happy exclaimed while Natsu and Hope almost expired with relief and Lisanna smiled widely.

Mira exhaled, smirking a little ''...Honestly, you big lug...you sure are troublesome.''

Elfman awoke while they were on their way back. First puzzled, he then remembered what went down, leaving him horrified, especially at the sight of the damage his friends took.e.

''I'm so, so, sorry!'' He cried, bowing again. To think he boasted about being manly...how foolish and blind was he? Did he really underestimate himself all along?

He thought back to how they almost refused their friends' offer earlier. What would've happened if they hadn't come? The possiblity made him feel sick. After all, if they hadn't been here...

How could he even face his sisters after something like this? He had always felt terrible to be behind his sisters in magic no matter how hard he tried so he decided to make himself into a strong for his family. But look at this! He was a failure-a failure as a Man and mage...it was all his fault that they were so hurt...he couldn't allow this to happen again...they could've died because of him!

Elfman almost cringed as the girls walked over ''I...I...''

The words died in his throat as both girls hugged him. Mira's voice shook a little ''Don't you dare scare us like that again, you idiot...''

The thought of the battle made her shudder. If Natsu hadn't been around to help them earlier...if Hope hadn't been nearby to protect her sister...and when the Beast took over...

Elfman and Lisanna had been what kept her going after the lowest point of her life...and she had almost lost them.

''We're just glad you're okay, Elf-niichan.'' Lisanna added with a smile.

''Aye! Let's just be glad it's over and done with, okay?'' Happy chirped.

''Heeey!'' A new voice called just as Jet rushed over. ''There you guys are-we've been looking for you!''

Happy blinked ''What?'' His eyes widened when a number of their guild mates hurried over. ''You're all here?''

''We found someone talking about the Beast and they said it was really bad. We thought we could come to help.'' Gray explained. ''Looks like you guys wrapped it up though.''

''Indeed, good work.'' Erza added.

Natsu might've tried to boast but...honestly his heart wasn't it. Not after that horrible battle...even he would admit that the Beast was a nightmare ''Yeah, I think we're all bushed though-that thing was as tough as nails.''

''Understandable.'' She nodded. ''We'll fix you up, come on.''

Jet steadied Elfman while Levy helped Lisanna, Macao frowned as he went to Hope, who was holding the side of his head with a somewhat pained look ''You all right?''

''I don't...know...something feels strange...'' He mumbled, looking dizzy. He swayed a little, the young man catching him then.

''Hey whoa, I gotcha.'' Macao picked him up. ''You must be exhausted, it's all right. We'll handle things from here.''

Mira could only stare at them in wonder. Despite how she treated them often, how she looked down and belittled them, they had all come to help? Even Erza, who she fought with often, was currently fussing over her. Simiarly, Cana kept looking at her every now and then with concern while Reedus conjured bandages which he wrapped around her injuries.

She...really had quite the friends here...

They took the returning group to Porlyusica, Fairy Tail's reclusive medic who lived alone in the woods. Luckily, she had been able to tend to them well, giving some medicine and telling them when to use it. The situation was a bit more complicated with Elfman, who had been told not to use magic until he recovers from the Beast's possession, which had put his body under a lot of strain.

Just as alarmed and frightened for the wayward group as the others, Makarov was overwhelmingly relieved that something could be done to help. Something that particularly troubled him was that Hope had been particularly subdued the entire time, they contributed this to a lack of magic power but...

''Endymion, do you know what's wrong with Hope?''

'...It's his magical core.' The phoenix admitted. 'I've been trying to keep things under control but...something about that battle changed it.'

''What do you mean?'' Levy blinked.

Porlyusica frowned ''I've seen this before...it was bound yes? Someone tried to bind the child's magic.''

Everyone looked at her in surprise but Endymion then responded 'Yes, it's incomplete but there was a binding spell of sorts over Hope's magic which was broken today. If I'm reading this right, it was part of the experiments. I awakened before those scientists expected and escaped but I never realized how far their work went before.'

''It makes sense-even if it's incomplete, it can cause some problems. I expect the child's body is in a bit of a shock due to his power readjusting to what it used to be.'' The healer nodded. ''This experiment took place almost six years ago, correct? Why would this happen now?''

'I think it's the pendant.' Endymion admitted. 'We found the second shard earlier and Hope used them it to help take down the Beast. It's been very much in tune with his magic for years so I imagine it can influence it to some extent.'

''It is imbued with Memoria magic so it could be possible...'' Makarov trailed off as the item gave a soft glow. It surrounded Hope in a sillvery aura for a few moments.

The next thing they knew, the boy's hair grew into a dark shade of brown, to general surprise. Hope stirred moments later, opening his eyes. Everyone was taken aback to see that his once blue eyes were now heterochromactic, one was a vivid purple and the other a bright silver color.

''Wha...''

''...The hell?!''

''What's going on?!''

Hope blinked sleepily at them, confused. Erza spoke after a moment ''..You're clearly exhausted, don't worry about this now.''

Natsu stared as his old friend quickly drifted off to sleep ''That's what he looked like when we first met!''

''Really?'' Happy blinked. ''Does this mean Master was right about the pendant?''

''Well, speculation won't do any good-it's clear that these horrid experiments caused quite enough damage and trouble to go around with.'' Porlyusica decided after a moment. ''And keep it down-all of you, how do you expect them to rest when you're all so loud?''

With a few apologies, they left the healer to get back to work.

The day had certainly been surprising for Fairy Tail. First, the news about the Beast, which thankfully turned out well. But now, there was this. They remembered Natsu mentioning that Hope had changed but seeing it happened was definitely unexpected. Naturally, the day had the most profound effect on the group that had defeated the Beast.

Mira resolved to do something about her attitude. Her guild mates had been nothing short of amazing today and it made her feel all the more worse. She didn't deserve their kindness. Seeing what could've happened today shook her to the core and she wanted to do something to change, change for the better. She couldn't keep going like this.

Lisanna promised herself to become stronger. She had to rely a lot on her friends today and things could've been really bad without them. She didn't want to feel as helpless as he had today ever again. Simlarly, Natsu made a silent vow to protect those he cared for.

Not all the change was for the better though...

Elfman swore that he wouldn't let such a thing ever happen again, he had to make sure he couldn't fail again.

It had been a rough day but Fairy Tail pulled through like they always did thanks to their strong bonds. And it was these bonds that would surely help them in the future...

Well, let's stop here.

What do you think? I thought of starting the canon story in this chapter but I didn't want to leave this stuff out. So the canon story starts at the next chapter.

I wanted to try what it would be be like to have Laxus and Makarov just sit and really talk things out-maybe it could've helped avoid certain problems much sooner. From personal experience, speaking truthfully and hashing everything out can be hard but it makes a world of difference. Things are beginning to look up for them but it'll take some time for them get along like they used to. Luckily, they'll have help along the way.

I always wondered what would happen if the Beast situation went differently so I'll try my own hand at it now. It's definitely quite a wake up call. Mira will definitely be nicer from here on out as today really made her appreciate her friends. They'll all keep working to become stronger after that awful battle. Elfman's still feeling a whole lot of guilt, except it's not as bad as in canon but he'll still be having some trouble with his powers because of it.

To make things clearer, the shards have a few enchantments that make them easy to use if applied correctly. Hope's already used to working with the first shard so the second one was little trouble. Like mentioned above, he changed back to his former appearance because the pendant undid some of the damage Demon Fang caused. As was mentioned above, the experiments weren't exactly complete so their ramifications are a little complicated. Hope's old appearance is also going to come into play for a couple of ideas I want to try soon.

Anywho, thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed it. Till next time!
