Lisanna perked up when she saw Natsu and Gray leading the group of Hope, Happy, Lucy, Erza and Endymion in the guild. ''You're back...'' Her eyes widened as she took in their expressions. ''...whoa, what happened?''
Cana was just as bewildered. She knew they had taken a monster extermination job to deal with creatures who had been terrorizing a town. Had it really been so bad though? ''Rough day?''
"You can say that...'' Erza started.
Gray sighed, slumping in his seat ''Wee just learned that Happy was completely right about Aquarius.''
The brunette raised an eye, remembering the blue cat's description of her being a monster. Given the cat's tendency to be melodramatic, many of them had been skeptic to say the least. ''Is she really that bad?''
Natsu harrumphed ''We were actually doing pretty good against those stupid monsters but then...''
The battle was going well. A few of the monsters were durable but they didn't stand much of a chance against the team's continued assault.
Trouble started when they spotted a couple of monsters coming in from the far side of the lake. If they had been allowed to progress, they would surely come across the town and that couldn't be allowed to happen.
Lucy had an idea ''Here goes. Gate of the Water Bearer, I open thee! Aquarius!''
A pretty blue haired mermaid appeared with the usual golden light and bell-like chime. She scowled the second she took in her surroundings ''Eat this!'' She unleashed a powerful water blast from her urn, not only blowing the monsters away but almost blowing the team back.
"Hey, what the-?!'' Gray spluttered. The water was coming in too fast for him to freeze, leaving him to grab Happy before he could be swept away. Luckily, Hope and Endymion came to the rescue, protecting them all with Aegis. The creation wizard sighed in relief as the shields of light put the danger to a stop. ''Oi, can't you control your attacks?!''
Aquarius crossed her arms ''Che, looks like I couldn't get all of you...'' Her eyes narrowed at Hope as some of them stared at her in bewilderment. ''...lousy brat.''
"What the hell?!'' Natsu scowled while Hope frowned at the spirit.
"Why exactly are you attacking us too?'' Erza demanded. ''Lucy is your summoner-aren't you supposed to be protecting her?''
"Don't you tell me what to do.'' The spirit returned flippantly, irritating the redhead. ''I got rid of your problem, didn't I? You should be thanking me.''
"That's not the point and you know it!'' The knight mage returned, scowling. ''Just who do you think you are? I won't allow to endanger my friends and get away with it.''
"Hoh?'' Aquarius sneered back. ''A little human thinks she can challenge me? One of the strongest celestial spirits?''
"If you think you'll frighten me, you have another thing coming.'' Erza declared.
Just when it looked like a fight was about to implode, Lucy cried ''Stop!'' When Erza looked at her, she added. ''There's no need to fight. Sorry, Erza, it's just how she is. I shouldn't have summoned her now.''
Aquarius huffed, turning her head ''If you know, just send me back. I'm already in a bad mood. I have better things to do then stick around a sniveling brat like you.''
"You little...!'' Natsu scowled, taking umbrage on Lucy's behalf. Likewise, the others were clearly just as displeased with the spirit's attitude.
Erza looked just as irked but she let out a breath once Lucy sent the spirit back. The blonde grimaced, she expected some trouble but she didn't think Aquarius would go so far.
Hope spared Lucy a worried look. ''Is this usual?''
"Sorry, I didn't expect...'' She started but the boy cut her off.
"You shouldn't be sorry-I mean, does she always treat you always like this?''
"I expected her to be wild given Happy's description but that...'' Erza trailed off.
"Yeah, what's her deal? Is she always so nasty to you?'' Happy added.
"Aquarius did a lot for me. It's just-we don't...really get along sometimes, I guess...'' Lucy smiled weakly but it was clearly forced. ''...she never had issues with Mama, even when she asked her to watch over me. She always said it was being stuck with someone weak like me...''
"Like hell you're weak!'' Natsu scowled as she lowered her head. ''I don't care what the hag's problem is but don't you listen to her. She doesn't deserve you.''
"Don't let anyone make you feel inferior without your consent. If Aquarius can't see how lucky she is to have someone who cares about her so much right there, then it's her loss.'' Endymion stated, Happy nodded emphatically to that.
Hope agreed ''You obviously care for your spirits a whole lot and they feel the same, for good reason. That's something to be proud of.''
Lucy smiled, a small but much truer one this time, her heart warmed by their support ''Thanks, you guys...''
"What a piece of work.'' Cana said, disgusted.
Lisanna frowned ''Was she really your mom's friend?''
Lucy nodded. She didn't like talking about her spirits badly but in this case...well, there wasn't much good she could say. ''Aquarius' key has been passed down in my family for a long time from what I recall. I think hers was one of the first keys Mama ever got.''
Gray raised an eye ''So you got a bunch of celestial mages in your family?''
"You can say that-whoa!'' She yelped at the sight of a chair flying towards them. Fortunately, Endymion stopped it with a shield, leaving her to sigh in a relief.
"Thanks...'' Lucy looked back to see Natsu in the middle of a brawl with a few of others. ''...when did...?''
"You'll learn not to ask soon.'' Endymion informed dryly.
The blonde rolled her eyes as Gray grabbed a plate before it hit him or Erza, rushing in to get the one who threw it. A fed up Erza stormed over to deal with them. ''...I think I see your point. So hey-I've been meaning to ask, why did Aquarius just single Hope out before?''
"I'd imagine she figured it out.'' The phoenix stated, confusing the girl. ''This isn't my real body. I'm a thought projection of sorts.''
"Wait, what?'' She'd heard of thought projections before. They were a special sort of spell where one created an image of themselves. It apparently wasn't some mere clone as it could do a bunch of things and no one would be the wiser. But she had never thought the spell could work like it did with him. ''Then where's your...?''
"He doesn't have a body.'' Happy put in cheerfully.
"What?!'' Lucy looked alarmed. He couldn't mean...
"Happy.'' Lisanna chided while Cana gave him a pointed look. Neither were impressed at him treating the subject so lightly.
The cat grinned sheepishly, he'd really just been looking to see Lucy's reaction. ''Sorry, couldn't resist...''
"You mean that was true?'' Lucy cut in.
"It is.'' Hope replied. ''Endymion's soul was merged with my magical core years ago-it was sealed in a big tablet before.''
The blonde's eyes were wide ''I've never heard of something like that before.''
"As far as we know, it's never been done.'' Endymion stated. It wasn't something they liked to think about. They more than anyone knew just how horrific that experiment really was. Hope was the only survivor and even then, he'd barely made it.
With a sigh, he told her about Demon Fang, the dark guild behind it all and what else they had done years ago. Demon Fang was the guild who attacked Crocus and launched many operations in an effort to make their leader king of Fiore. Lucy had heard a few horror stories about them-how it was a few guilds as well as the Council that finally put a stop to them. They had kidnapped people and used them in their terrible schemes and experiments and that was just the first of what came to mind. She never imagined her friends would be some of their victims...
"I'm sorry-that's terrible...'' She didn't know what to say after those revelations-what could she say?
The others gave her understanding looks though and Cana half-smiled ''Hey, those two are as tough as nails, y'know? That's how they made it so far.''
The girl's lips twitched ''I can see that...''
Hope gave them a grateful look ''Well, we didn't even know the projection could work like that but it somehow changed when I tried to let Endymion take control of it.''
"Heeh, now that's one lucky accident...'' The blonde remarked. Magic sure was full of surprises.
She glanced back at the fight before asking something that had been bothering her for a while. ''I don't get it. They have no problem acting like this on a regular basis but they actually thought that lousy quiet act would've fooled Erza?''
Cana snorted ''Nothing we haven't told them before. It's just that common sense tends to fly out the window here.''
"I hear you loud and clear...''
Erza blinked ''A shopping trip?''
"Aye! Lisanna wants to see if you'll come-Lucy and Levy are coming too. I think Lucy's checking up with a few of the others. Anyway, what do you say?'' Happy inquired.
She began to smile ''That sounds like fun...''
"Really? It sounds dead boring to me.'' Natsu stated, making her blink and glance to her right, having not noticed him pass by.
"You could use it though-when was the last time you actually looked at your clothes?'' Erza asked pointedly.
The teen paused, noticing that his clothes were actually getting pretty frayed. ''...Eh, it's fine-I'll just go and get something from home later.''
"Oh, that won't do. You're coming with us.'' Erza said at once.
"What?! Why?!''
She gave him an unimpressed look ''Weren't you and Happy talking about how you can hardly find anything at your house this morning?''
"She's got a point.'' The cat acknowledged. It was probably because the house was just too messy but still...
"Don't help her!'' Natsu retorted.
"No arguments, Natsu. You're going.'' The redhead stated.
Of course, the teen couldn't just back down like this ''But...''
"I said, no arguments. Are we clear?'' Erza demanded, a dangerous look in her eye.
With that, Natsu's objections came to a swift and painless end...
A short while later, the three of them along with Lisanna's group as well as Hope (who had been roped into this by Natsu) and Endymion, headed off...
"Hey, no need for that face-it'll be fine.'' Levy told Natsu, who merely grunted in annoyance.
It was easy for her to say, he hated shopping. Why did he have to do this?
He guessed his expression gave him away because Happy spoke up ''It's either this or have Erza beat you into going. Do you really want to fight her?''
Natsu grimaced but Erza responded before he could ''And just why do you assume I'll just beat him into submission? You don't know that.'' Everyone gave her skeptic looks, making her sweatdrop as she realized that it really could've been something she would do. ''...Okay, fair point...''
"It's for your own good, Natsu. You look like you could use a change of clothes.'' Levy pointed out. ''On that subject though, I've been meaning to ask-what is your scarf even made of? It always seems to come out of whatever adventure you have perfectly fine. A lot of enchantments for clothes don't work that well.''
"Eh, beats me.'' Natsu glanced at the scarf. ''I've had it for like forever now...it was the reward from back when I was starting out. An old lady said she has it forever and it had some magic on it. But yeah, it sure is tough, huh?''
Lucy tilted her head a bit ''You know, I heard a few things about this but...what's their house actually like?''
Well, let's put it this way-there's organized chaos and then there's what looks like the aftermath of a hurricane.'' Hope informed dryly, Lisanna snickered while Levy hid a smile.
"Wow...somehow, seeing as it's those two-that really doesn't come as much of a surprise.'' Lucy stated flatly, ignoring their looks. It was easy for her to guess which was which. After all, Natsu and Happy attracted such chaos on a regular basis that it figured their house was such a mess. ''So wait, they live all the way in the forest and Hope lives with Master. Gray was saying something about how long it took him to find a home before...doesn't the guild have a boy's dorm?''
She blinked at the looks her friends exchanged, perplexed ''...What?''
"Well, it used to...'' Levy admitted.
"We know there was a dorm at one point from the old records. But it was destroyed and...'' Lisanna paused to consider her words. ''...every time we tried asking Master...''
"He acts all weird, the look on his face was something...'' Natsu trailed off, trying to imitate the expression.
Lucy gave him an odd look ''...Okay, now you're just pulling my leg.''
"No, that's actually close.'' Lisanna remarked, making her raise an eye. ''He never told anyone what happened-I know even Laxus tried to ask at one point but he completely clams up.''
Lucy blinked ''Weird, really weird...''
"I still say Master must have had something to do with it being destroyed.'' Happy stated.
Erza seemed skeptic ''Is that really it? Surely he'd admit it if it was that simple...''
"You never know, he might be too embarrassed. He does get on everyone's backs about the property damage.''
"Yes and everyone keeps giving him reasons to do so.'' Endymion pointed out flatly, earning nods from Lucy and Levy.
The latter stopped walking ''Oh hey, there's a good shop. Come on!''
Levy was delighted to learn that not only did Lucy love reading, she even read a lot of the same books Levy had and their tastes were even similar. With this discovery they had hit off quickly and found that they had more things in common.
"Where have you been all my life?'' She grinned and Lucy smiled. ''Can I read your book when you finish it?''
The blonde seemed a bit embarrassed. She had accidentally let slip her dream of becoming a writer-when only Natsu and the others knew. ''You want to?''
"Of course! I'm not much of an expert but I've read loads of stories. I could help you with some advice if you want.''
"That'd be great!'' The girl beamed. ''You're going to be the first to read my work, I'll make sure of it.''
"All right!''
Lucy laughed a bit, liking the girl's infectious cheer. She could tell the two of them would be good friends.
Natsu huffed as he watched Lucy talk to Levy about one of her purchases. ''I don't know how you're okay with this.'' He told Hope as the boy joined him.
"I don't really mind it.'' He returned, glancing at Lucy. ''Besides, it's already helping...''
Natsu gave him a puzzled look and Hope explained ''...Lucy's been down ever since we came back from that job. I think Lisanna came up with this to cheer her up.''
"Bingo!'' Their old friend's made them turn back as a smiling Lisanna joined them. ''I thought we could use a change of pace. Lucy's fitting in nicely but we don't always have to keep working. A change of pace is good every once in a while.''
"...Heh, fair enough.'' The dragon slayer grinned. He didn't like the idea but he wasn't about to complain with the results.
"So what'd you find?'' Lisanna glanced at the bag in his arms, peeking then. ''...Natsu, that's boring-it's practically the same as your usual clothes.''
"Whatever, like I really care about clothes.'' He returned.
Hope was looking around curiously ''...Has anyone seen Erza? I heard her before sounding really excited. She said something about finding new armor...''
Lisanna blinked ''I'm pretty sure this place doesn't have any...'' She went towards the changing rooms, with the boys following her.
"Oh, brother.'' They head Happy mumble. He and Endymion were perched on one seat, facing the same direction. ''Guys, get a load of this.''
"What?'' Natsu blinked.
"Erza's new 'brilliant' idea.'' Endymion uttered in a deadpan tone, waving a wing towards the redhead, who was eyeing herself up in a mirror.
The three couldn't help but stop and stare. Now they were used to Erza wearing strange outfits and costumes occasionally but this took the cake. She basically looked like a giant strawberry.
If it had been anyone else, Natsu would've burst into laughter. He didn't want to think of what Erza would do to him if he dared try. As such, he felt inclined to ask ''...Erza, what the hell is that?''
"My strawberry armor!'' She declared proudly. ''It was supposed to be a new idea for the store but it really didn't sell. I have no idea why though...''
Happy was sure that people had far better taste than that but it wasn't worth the risk of the consequences of saying that. Erza's smile widened as she fully turned back to face them ''So, what do you think?''
"...Can we be honest?'' Happy wanted to know.
"I wouldn't expect anything less.''
"In that case, take it off.'' The cat returned.
"What he said.'' Lisanna agreed.
"This is a terrible idea.'' Hope added.
"What? No!'' Erza exclaimed. ''How can you not understand? This is brilliant-it even smells like strawberries.''
Their silence and stares made her fidget a little. ''...Is it really so bad?''
"Yes, yes it is.'' Happy and Lisanna returned in tandem.
Happy watched the girls eye the make up in the third shop they entered with increasing interest, having settled himself in Hope's arms. ''Hope, you're really okay with this?''
"Mmhm, it's like I told Natsu. I don't enjoy it like they do but at least they're all having fun.'' The boy stated.
"Can't argue with that...''
"And this is just another reason you're a gentleman, Hope. I know we can count on you.'' Lisanna stated as the girls walked over.
"You said it.'' Levy agreed, shooting Natsu a look. ''You know, you could consider this practice.'' He blinked. ''When you get a girlfriend, you'll have to help her with shopping at least occasionally. It's the decent thing to do.''
"It's hard to imagine Natsu with a girlfriend at all.'' Happy deadpanned.
The dragon slayer frowned in annoyance. ''Oi!''
"Now that's uncalled for, Happy. There's no reason it couldn't happen.'' Erza countered, making him feel a bit better.
"Yeah, but...can you picture it? Wouldn't it be weird?''
The redhead thought about it ''...When you put it like that...I suppose you have a point.''
Natsu glared at the two of them. Could they at least stop talking like he wasn't even there? ''Shows what you know, I bet I can find one before either of you!''
Lucy rolled her eyes ''It's not a competition.''
"Natsu's fans are going to be so disappointed...then again, they hardly even know him. The poor things.'' Happy added with a cheeky grin that made his partner scowl.
The comment had Lucy thinking. She had seen a few examples of said fans before, both on jobs and near the guild. They were...quite the crowd of people. She had known a bunch of the guild members by reputation alone before entering. ''You guys must be used to that by now. Erza and Hope must have a lot of fans too.''
"Well, you're right...I know we've both seen quite the share of those.'' The first nodded. ''Like Hope's-the first time we ran into them was something else...''
"Can you not drag me into this, please?'' The boy cut in, unimpressed. ''Erza, you of all people have no right to talk there.''
Natsu nodded emphatically ''Remember what happened last time?''
The redhead seemed almost sheepish ''...Point taken.''
"What happened?'' Lisanna blinked.
"It was a nightmare! Those morons were all convinced that Natsu and Hope were fans too and it took us forever to make them see the truth.'' Happy grumbled.
"It was rather irritating.'' Endymion concurred.
"And stupid. Like, what would make them think that would ever happen?'' Natsu snorted.
Erza looked like she wanted to speak but then Hope went ''The idea is just too strange to me. Erza's like a sister.''
The redhead couldn't help but smile at this, Levy shot her an amused look and paused when she saw a familiar figure nearby.
It was Loke, who was approaching one of his girlfriends near a shop. The blue haired girl called out a greeting and he looked about ready to return it but then he stiffened and quickly walked away.
Levy blinked twice ''...What just happened?''
"Sorry, Levy-chan. I think it's because of me.'' Lucy admitted. ''Loke's been avoiding me like the plague ever since we met.''
What? Why?''
I tried asking-he just mumbled something about bad memories and took off.'' Happy offered with a shrug. This almost reminded him of the fear Erza inspired in the guild. But Loke had no reason to fear Lucy...at least the cat didn't think he did. ''Wonder what that's about...''
The following day, everyone in Fairy Tail encountered a spectacle early on. It basically went like...
"Laxus! Fight me!''
The blond punched the charging Natsu with an electrified fist, sending him into a wall.
...And that was all she wrote.
This was a particularly familiar occurrence as Natsu had a habit of picking fights with many, including those stronger than him. Leading to very short fights, if they can even be called that.
"...This used to be funny but now it's just sad.'' Gray admitted.
"Agreed. I often wonder how we're so used to this but then again Natsu can find trouble even in a box. I find that it's just better to go along with it, for our sanity and patience.'' Freed stated.
"Gotta agree there, so hey how'd the whole shopping thing go? Natsu set anything on fire?'' Bickslow asked.
"Erza was there, remember?'' Freed pointed out.
"...Never mind.'' Bickslow thought that was all that needed to be said, really. Erza was terrifying when crossed and they would all avoid her wrath if they could help it.
"Well, it helps that Hope went too...'' Gray trailed off, noticing the boy in question, who was helping Natsu back on his feet.
"You're just going to keep challenging him, aren't you?'' The boy said. It wasn't a question and both of them knew it.
Natsu dusted himself as he answered ''Like hell I'm giving up...'' He blinked. ''...actually, wait-since you're here...'' Hope gave him a quizzical look.
Endymion spoke up after Natsu finished explaining himself ''So basically you want training advice?''
"Yup, Hope worked out a whole bunch of plans for training. I figured he might know a way to really power up. I've gotta keep getting stronger if I wanna make it to S-class!'' Natsu returned. The S-class mages were the strongest in the guild just after Makarov and Fairy Tail had five members who held the esteemed rank, Erza, Mystogan, Gildarts, Laxus and Mira.
They would have S-class exams to decide who could join them later this year but Natsu didn't want to rely on that. Hope had worked out quite the plans for training over time and the results had been amazing. Thus, Natsu knew he could count on him for help.
"Most of that was because of things I read in books and I asked some of the others for help but...'' Hope seemed pensive. ''...the training takes time and patience though. I mean, we can work something out to help you for sure...''
Natsu perked up at this but Endymion then spoke ''It depends on how much effort you're willing to put in. I told you before, you can't just corners in something like this anyway.'' The training was something they proposed to their friends way back. Natsu was enthusiastic at the idea but he never had the patience or diligence to keep it up regularly.
"Especially if you want to make it to S-class.'' Mira put in, revealing that she overheard them. ''It's not just the sort of thing you can simply reach with pure power, Natsu. There's a lot more to it than that.''
"That's like what Gramps was saying...'' The teen frowned for a moment. ''...so what do you think a person has to do for it, Mira?''
"Well, it's hard to explain...'' She crossed her arms, thinking. ''...having power would be good, giving how hard S-class jobs can be. But you also have to know your magic in and out, to make the most of it. You have to try and adapt to circumstances and be quick on your feet. You saw an example of how quick S-class jobs can change for the worst.''
Both Natsu and Hope's expressions darkened as the three thought of the 'Beast' job, an event that turned hard on all of those involved. Mira carried on ''You should have a variety of skills, a lot of people would be counting on S-class mages when the need comes. I know it seems like a big deal but you can't underestimate what the position means.''
Hope had more or less expected something along those lines since Laxus told him something similar when they talked about the S-class a while back. It made a lot of sense to him. He could see that Natsu was contemplating Mira's words but one could only wonder what the dragon slayer would make of them.
Loke blinked when Mira recounted the conversation a short while later ''Oh, so that's why...Natsu just took off saying something about training and plans. You might have gotten through to him, Mira.''
"Eh, that seems like giving him way too much credit.'' Gray drawled.
"Do you have to be such a pessimist?'' Makarov frowned.
"Just saying, since when does that Ash brain ever come up with plans?''
"He might surprise you.'' Mira pointed out. ''Besides, he does seem to want this badly...''
"Does anyone know why he's so determined to become S-class by the way?'' Loke added as Mira went back to the bar.
Makarov thought back ''He did mention something about it helping him find Igneel before...''
Gray wondered if it really would help but there was really no way to know. ''Speaking of...Gramps, you know who you're gonna pick for the exams?''
"I'm working on it but yes, I have a few candidates chosen.'' The man returned. ''And before you ask, no, you're not getting any name and I'm not telling anyone what the criteria are for the selection.''
"...Was it that obvious?'' Gray mumbled after a moment while Loke seemed amused.
Makarov smirked ''Like I don't know you well enough by now? You brats are a hundred years too early to try pulling the wool over my eyes.''
Mira smiled when she found her siblings talking to Hope, just the people she was looking for.
"Oh, Nee-chan!'' Elfman noticed her. ''What's up?''
I found a new job, I thought you might like to join me.'' She explained, holding up the request.
A few hours later...
The job was to protect a merchant caravan until it reached its destination, the city of Walla. The new path the caravan would take was said to be treacherous. It was near a forest which had monsters and a number of dangerous plants but due to a recent storm which blocked their usual route, this was their only choice.
The group had been welcomed at once, with the merchants very glad to see them. Once the situation was explained, they were off...
"So if people are still clearing up your usual route, why did you choose this way now?'' Elfman wanted to know.
"We have to.'' One of the merchants, who introduced herself as Joanna, replied. ''We're bringing a variety of things to that region but the most important are the ingredients for a medicine we were commissioned to bring. There are patients who really need it over in Walla, it's worth taking a risk if we can help them.''
He perked up ''Talk about Manly!''
Ah, thanks I think?'' She seemed confused as he looked at Lisanna. ''That is good, right?''
The girl nodded, smiling ''In others words, it's awesome. But yeah, I think it's really good of you guys to go through all the trouble.''
"Ah, that's nothing special-really.'' Joanna's husband Mark returned, waving a hand. ''It's just the decent thing to do. Now, let's go!''
Everything was peaceful at first. The team got a chance to speak with more of the merchants, some of whom were happy to show off a few of the items they were carrying. A good amount of their merchandise were magical items they were to sell to the shops in Walla.
Elfman recognized the mark on one of the armors in a crate. ''Hey, you've got some Heart Kreuz stuff too?''
"Oh, I hear Titania's a huge fan of this brand.'' One of the merchants remarked.
"Yeah, Erza swears by...'' The former's eyes widened at the sound of a screech reached his ears. Tensing, everyone began looking around, seeing a bunch of raptor like monsters flying close. Just then, they dove to attack.
Hope cast Aegis, the shield of light serving to defend the monsters' intended targets. Elfman leaped up to attack then, transforming his arm into of a beast but the raptor dodged his punch. He tried again but they were too nimble.
A flash brought his attention to Lisanna, who assumed her Thunderbird takeover. The form was somewhat humanoid still but she had white and golden brown feathers as well as sharp claws. She waved one of her wings, a burst of electricity blasted two raptors back and he took the chance to knock one out. Hope shot the other one down while Mira easily blasted some newly arrived similar enemies with her water magic. Soon enough, the trouble was over and done with.
The merchants were very complimentary of their efforts, pleased to see a demonstration of their skills. Evidently, the fact that they handled this assault so well was reassuring. It wasn't long before they went back on their way.
Endymion made sure to keep a general look over the area while the others took to watching over different parts of the caravan. From the looks of it, they would need a few hours to reach their destination.
Hope found himself thinking back to the earlier conversation with Natsu. The dragon slayer had rushed out of the guild afterwards so he hadn't really gotten around to checking if the boy wanted to train. Being aware of his reasons for wanting to be S-class, Hope knew Natsu wasn't about to leave things as they were. He couldn't help but wonder what the boy was up to now...
Natsu and Happy had already started on a plan regarding this very purpose. There was just one thing they needed from the guild to get things underway...
"We've got this in the bag!'' The first declared confidently.
Happy grinned ''Aye Sir!''
Mira blasted a monster away with a dark purple beam, kicking another into the ground a second later. She charged a big gorilla like creature, knocking it out with a few punches enhanced by her Satan Soul. Elfman punched a flying monster that made to attack her with his stone arm, jumping off its body to strike down two more flying enemies. A third one was about to strike him but it was forcefully stopped in midair by a wall of branches and thorns.
Lisanna was now clad in a green and brown outfit that resembled robes, a good part made out of leaves and branches. This was her Meliae form, its abilities allowed her to control plant life. She waved a hand, more branches rose from the ground, striking the beast down. With a snap of her fingers, a flurry of leaves from a nearby tree hit another enemy. It was swiftly taken down by a sword of shimmering light. She smiled to herself and looked back at Hope, who directed a number of similar swords to strike more enemies.
When a particularly monster which looked like it was made from stone came close to him, he held up a hand and the swords fell around it. Hope held up a pistol and fired, a ray of light piercing through the monster, leaving it to fall. He and Mira proceeded to attack the final two enemies, the latter slamming her fist to the ground and raising pillars of darkness that forced them back. This was Dark Eruption. Hope equipped his swords, willing power to them and light condensed around the blades, increasing their length and power. A silver aura formed around him as he increased his speed with magic, using a memoria spell called Accel Force. The boy disappeared from view for a moment. They could tell his attacks had landed when the slashes on the monsters became evident and he appeared. This was Sonic Wing. With a few swift strikes, they were done for.
The caravan stopped for some rest a short while later...
Joanna glanced at Elfman telling some of the others a few stories before turning to Lisanna ''Just curious, you and your sister don't mind him calling you Manly?''
Like we can stop him.'' She replied flatly, leaving the woman amused. ''It's a pretty good compliment in Elf-niichan's view anyway...''
Hope and Mira sat under a tree, talking as they ate. The boy seemed curious ''I never did think to ask...so Grandpa choses the exam's candidates based on their performance through out the the year?''
That's about the gist of it.'' She confirmed.
"...You know, the more I think about it-the more I wonder...a lot of people seem interested in being S-class but not many understand what it really means-do they?''
Mira nodded, smiling at his insightful comment ''I don't think I did either-for a while. You know, how it is-I just kept focusing on strength for so long. Experiencing jobs after passing the exam was actually a wake up call. But looking back at the way I was...I honestly wonder how you all put up with me. I was a nightmare.''
"You're a good person, Mira-san. You could be nice-we knew that. Even if you just had a hard time showing it. Hey, we're here now. We're all friends.'' Hope smiled as she agreed happily, ruffling his hair. He wasn't about to hold her former attitude against her. Especially when he remembered what Lisanna told him and Natsu about their past...
To think they were kicked out of their own home just because Mira actually got rid of that demon plaguing the town. He could understand them being afraid because of her discovering her abilities but that was just going too far. It wasn't until he heard that story that he knew why his past seemed to strike a chord with her.
"It's okay, Elf-niichan...''
Curious, the two looked over to see Lisanna leading an upset Elfman over with Endymion joining them. Mira frowned at her siblings' expressions ''What happened?''
"Mark and the others were curious about Lisanna's Meliae form-because Meliae tend to be hard to find.'' Endymion added and she nodded. ''She was just telling them about how she was able to get it thanks to that lowlife who attacked Magnolia three years ago when another of his friends asked about Elfman's abilities. And the subject of why he became known as 'Beast Arm' came up...''
"Ah...'' Mira bit her lip, catching on. Elfman couldn't use a full Take-Over unlike her and Lisanna, something that had always been a troubling subject to him. Said trouble was also compounded after the 'Beast' mission, which had hit him the worst. He couldn't bring himself to ever try assuming a full Take-Over every again after that day.
Lisanna inwardly sighed. She knew the merchants didn't mean anything bad, they had no way of knowing what a land mine this subject was. They had yet to figure out a way to help Elfman despite their attempts to tackle the issue. ''Don't let it to get to you...''
"I'm not mad-they were just saying the truth. I've never been able to do a complete Take-Over and I doubt I ever will.'' He stated morosely.
"What? Wait, you've really come far...'' She started.
"No, I didn't!'' Elfman cut her off. ''It doesn't feel like I've grown at all since that awful day. You guys don't get it-I got so cocky back then and I almost...'' He grimaced. ''...I don't even want to think of what would've happened if we hadn't let Hope and the others come. I told myself I wouldn't anything like that happen-never again.''
"Understandable but you need to consider that you're holding yourself back. What you really need is confidence. Being scared is one thing but how long can you avoid this?'' Endymion asked pointedly, making him look away.
"...There's a lot in life that can be scary.'' Everyone looked at Hope. ''In a way, you're right-no one would know this problem like you so maybe we can't understand it in a similar way. Endymion's got the right idea. What're you going to do if a time comes where you have no choice but to face that fear?''
Elfman froze but Hope carried on, clearly not expecting an answer. ''Just try to consider that, please. Even if things seem impossible, even if they scare you to the core...that doesn't mean you should let that stop you. It can be hard-I'm still reminding myself to keep trying...but I also know it's worthwhile. Sometimes, believing...a leap of faith can make all the difference.''
The boy turned to leave, heading off to check on things with the caravan. Mira's expression softened ''He would know...''
Lisanna nodded, thinking along similar lines as she recalled the day learned about Hope's past...
She looked at her brother ''It's like what Master said, remember? It's fine to make mistakes but what you do after realizing those mistakes is what matters most. We trust you-that's why we can say these things without a doubt.''
Mira faced him as the younger girl left ''That's right. We can't give you confidence but you'll have our support. That day was horrible for all of us but you have to remember that everything worked out in the end-we were all fine. We've grown since then-all of us. What's important is that you don't give-don't give up on yourself. Because we won't give up on you.'' Elfman lowered his head but she didn't miss his eyes growing watery. She smiled gently ''That's part of what being a family's about after all.''
Lisanna caught up to Hope, taking his hand in hers as she spoke ''...I'm glad we met you. Thank you, for taking a leap of faith with us.''
What he said to Elfman came from his own experience after all. Even if they found out the truth about his past, that didn't mean everything would automatically be okay. He had every reason to be apprehensive about opening his heart again but he took a chance and it really paid off in the end.
He returned his smile with one of his own ''It was worth it.''
Later, as the caravan drew close to its destination...
"Mira-nee, what's wrong?'' Lisanna tilted his head. ''You look kind of...well, like you're bracing yourself for trouble.''
"I guess I am...something just isn't right here.'' She frowned, looking around the forest path.
"I wouldn't worry, Mira-chan. Looks like everything's a-okay.'' Mark pointed out.
But that was just it...
Elfman scratched his head as he thought that over ''I dunno...isn't it too quiet?''
...which was what bothered Mira. They had hardly heard a sound ever since they entered the forest. It was also rather strange how certain parts of the forest appeared blocked with either fallen trees or rocks and such. Given how their route was supposed to be dangerous, this couldn't bode well. She guessed Hope and Endymion had picked up on the oddity too, judging by how they concentrated on keeping lookout.
That was exactly why they were the first to spot the problem at hand.
Hope quickly cast Aegis over the caravan, just in time to deflect something fast that would've hit Mark and Elfman otherwise. They couldn't see what it was but it seemed sharp enough to even slice a nearby tree.
"What the-?!'' The former spluttered.
Mira noticed one of the trees nearby rustling and shaking as if there was something on it, but she couldn't see anything. Her eyes narrowed as she fired a water sphere at the area but nothing happened. She didn't miss how another tree shook a moment later, showing that whatever had been there had moved. ''...Invisibility, huh?''
Endymion flew out to her far left ''Elfman, it's above you!''
"Right!'' The boy jumped, transforming his arm into Were-tiger form before attacking.
Joanna recoiled as the coach near her shook with weight. ''Whoa, is it...?!''
A foot print on the ground told them that it had jumped again. Lisanna's eyes widened when the fast moving object cut off a part of the tree near her. The next thing she knew, three rays of light went past her, hitting something that was drawing close.
It was some sort of big, chameleon like creature with skin that was colored multiple shades of green and yellow eyes. The fast object, which was actually its tongue-lashed out again but they quickly got out of the way.
Nodding thanks to Hope, Lisanna assumed her Meliae form, waving a hand she manipulated a flurry of leaves to fly at it. The creature quickly leaped away, disappearing then. Hope's eyes narrowed, carefully keeping track of the creature thanks to the magic he shared with Endymion ''There's two of those things. I'd say this one's trying to lead us to the other one. It's awfully close now...'' He considered stopping it with Memoria magic but the means he did know for that weren't likelty to work. For this thing is was rather nimble and they needed something quick to avoid the risk of getting anyone hurt.
Hope knew what to do though.
"Everyone, close your eyes!'' He called, gathering a sphere of light between his palms. Once they did so, he willed more power to it and it let out a brilliant light. The creature hissed, falling from a tree as it was blinded by the flash. Endymion and Elfman attacked next, slashing at the enemy a few times as it appeared and disappeared. The first waved a wing, unleashing three crescent waves of light that took it out.
"Where's that other monster now?'' Elfman asked the phoenix.
"Blocking the path leading to Walla, we have to go through it.''
Mira's eyes narrowed, looking back at Joanna ''Stay here, we'll be back.''
She nodded ''Be careful, all of you.''
It wasn't long before they found the monster, which was indeed the only block between them and the exit out of the forest. It looked a lot like the first one only it was much bigger and plenty more vicious.
The enemy let out a bellow, releasing a burst of some pale blue liquid which they made sure to avoid. It turned out to be acid, which it proceeded to use rapid fire on the group at large. Mira negated the attack with a wave of water, quickly assuming her Satan Soul as the creature charged at them to stop in its tracks. It tried to force its way past her but Mira held him off with ease, kicking it to the ground.
Just as it was about to release more acid, a silver sphere surrouded it, making its movements much more heavy. This was Minuere, a Memoria spell that slows down its targets.
Lisanna used her Thunderbird form to strike it with electricity while Elfman punched it hard on the head with his Stone arm. It still managed to shake those off, slowly but surely using its tongue to release some acid on the two. Lisanna moved fast to fly her brother out of the way but the creature used this chance to destroy it surroundings, chucking large bits of debris at them. The attack was stopped by Endymion, who swiftly destroyed most of the debris with a number of beams. Mira slammed it on the head with a punch just as it tried to release acid, forcing it to stop and making the acid hurt it instead.
Hope and Endymion attacked the creature as it recoiled in pain. The latter cloaked himself in light and rammed its left side, releasing an explosive force-this was Nova Burst. Hope attacked from the opposite side, using Radiant Blizzard to stun it. This gave Mira enough time to finish it off with a powerful blast of darkness, known as Soul Extinctor.
With the trouble out of the way, they were able to make it to their destination shortly afterwards. Everyone from the caravan was very grateful, making sure to thank and reward them before they headed off...
Joanna waved as she made to follow her husband ''Thanks, you were all amazing!''
The group waved back and Elfman took a moment to look around ''So this is Walla, huh? I heard about it but damn, this place really looks like something else...''
"Well, while we're here why don't we take time to check it out?'' Mira suggested, making Lisanna perk up.
"Sounds like fun-I'm in!''
"Me too!'' Their brother chimed in. ''Oh wait, Hope, Endymion-you guys traveled a whole lot. Ever been here before?''
The first nodded and Mira's smile widened ''Perfect, you two can show us around then!''
"Ah, that's why they're keeping us around, Hope.'' Endymion commented drolly.
The boy nodded, feigning a similar tone of exasperation ''Yeah, all the time we spent traveling sure comes in handy for them...''
Mira gave a small pout ''Aw, was I that obvious?''
The five couldn't help but laugh after that. Lisanna shook her head, deciding to get things back on track as she looked back at the street ahead of them ''Come on, guys-where do you think we should go?''
Hope followed her line of sight ''Let's see...''
Well, let's stop here.
I wanted to do a little something original before going to the next arc. I'd like to give more of the characters a chance to shine. Hope I managed to pull that off here. I thought of using the Galuna Island arc but it wouldn't be too different so I didn't see the point. Unlike in the original story, I'm fully going to use the Tower of Heaven arc. It's happening around the same time as this chapter though.
I never understood why no-one ever called Aquarius out on this attitude so I wanna try that here. I get that not all of Lucy's spirits had to be friendly but come on, she's hardly any better than a bully for a long time. I just think it's weird considering how people in the guild see each other as family. Maybe the whole thing was played for laughs or whatever but the joke does get old, at least it did for me.
About Lisanna's new forms-remember that attack that was mentioned in Chapter 2? That's when she got the Meliae and Thunderbird. The villain was abusing creatures to get what he wanted and she was able to use her magic just before they died. I'm assuming her take-over works like Mira's and she has to do it directly (considering what was mentioned about the Mirajane: Seilah form and how Mira got it). But yeah, I wanted to give her some new powers. The Thunderbird form's pretty fast and she gets to use electricity with it and the Meliae lets her manipulate plants and stuff. Elfman got a new form too but it won't be seen for a while.
The mention of the S-class thing is basically my opinion of it. Like people just see the special title and don't think what it really means-or what it takes to get that far. I also wanted to show more about the changes I caused, like with the Beast job-especially with Elfman.
Well, thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed it. Till next time!
