Before starting the Hoenn League, Summer visited the New Trainer Festival in her hometown. Earlier in Oldale Town, she ran into Weldon and his mom, Camilla, who were running a booth at the event. Worried about her son's mental health, Camilla asked Summer to battle her as part of a demonstration. Though the older Trainer and her Sceptile had the upper hand, Summer and Blaze were able to put up a good effort. Afterwards, our heroine asked her rival to join her as a teacher during her journey. Now, she waits for him to arrive. Will Weldon actually come, or will Summer travel alone?
Chapter 5- New Arrivals
A blue-eyed teenager wearing a dark grey T-shirt, dark blue vest, and ragged jeans stormed into the Pokémon Center, alarming Nurse Toki and her Chansey. His short blonde hair was held back by a green bandana tied around his forehead. He looked slightly intimidating, and I sensed an air of arrogance and carelessness from him.
I let out a disappointed sigh. That's not Weldon. But he does look familiar… Where have I seen him before?
He gave the nurse one Poké Ball and once she left, he took out some forms and scribbled something on them. Once he was done, he turned around and noticed me staring at him. "What're you glarin' at, kid?" he yelled.
Kid? "Sorry, you just made...quite a presence."
He put his hands into his vest pockets and sneered, "Are you some newb Trainer that couldn't help glarin' at me?"
Lightning leapt onto the couch and retorted, "Does having a Raichu make her a 'newb', newbie?"
I stroked her head. "Lightning, calm down."
He laughed. "That's rich. A Raichu calling me a newbie."
We raised our eyebrows. "You have a Pokémon translator app?" I asked.
"Yeah, so what? Not like you'd know anything about it."
Lightning growled. "Actually, she-"
Nurse Toki nervously walked over. "S-Sorry for the wait. H-Here's your Mudkip, Mr. Eurig."
"About time." He took the Poké Ball back and let out the Hoenn Water type starter as the nurse retreated to the reception desk. "Come on, Zuli."
The Mudkip was about to follow when he saw me and Lightning. "Hey, Summer!"
I stroked my chin. "Aren't you the Mudkip I helped about a week ago at the lab?"
Zuli beamed. "Yeah, that's me!"
I then realized who this teenager was.
His Trainer glared at me. "You know this newb, Zuli?"
"Of course! She's the Trainer I told you about! The two-time Top 8 Trainer and Professor Birch's former junior research assistant, Summer Scorcher."
He was unconvinced. "You're Summer Scorcher?"
I nodded. "And you're Lapis Eurig, the Nuzlocke Trainer?"
Lapis crossed his arms. "Who told you that?"
"I got a brochure about your challenge as part of my Hoenn League registration package."
He smirked. "Looks like my reputation precedes me."
Zuli made a sideward smirk. "I don't know, Loud Lapis. You haven't even started the challenge yet."
I held a snicker.
Lapis growled, "Whatcha laughing at?" Then he glared at his Pokémon. "I'll make you pay for that remark, Zuli!"
"But it's the truth!"
Poor Zuli. I wonder if there's something I can do to make him feel better.
The teen rubbed the bridge of his nose. "I swear… Come on, we need to get to Route 103."
A man in a blue PokéMart apron entered the building. "Excuse me, is there a Lapis Eurig here?"
"Who the heck wants to know?!" Lapis' eyes grew wide. "Wait, why can't I say hel-ck?!" Glaring at me once more, he shouted, "You really are a kid!"
"I...really don't know what you're talking about," I replied with a shrug.
The PokéMart employee, showing a very forced grin, said to Lapis, "Pardon the intrusion, but I need to show you the benefits of the PokéMart."
"What?! I don't need anythin' there now!"
"My apologies, but this is an order from the Pokémon League Association. Now, if you'd kindly follow me."
"But…" He scowled and reluctantly followed the worker.
Zuli smiled and said, "Bye, Summer!"
I waved slowly. "Bye, Zuli. Good luck to you both."
Lapis rolled his eyes before they finally departed.
Nurse Toki approached me and breathed a sigh of relief. "I apologize for that, Summer."
I shook my head. "No need, Nurse Toki. Hopefully you won't see him for a while."
She attached her favorite accessory, a Pelipper hairpin, over her left ear. "I wish, but I was informed he'll most likely make many stops to the Pokémon Centers to save on money. He does have a budget to maintain after all." Her smile returned. "I hope your journey won't be as stressful as his."
"I certainly hope so." I looked at the door and saw Weldon walk through the doors. My heart skipped a beat.
"Oh, Weldon Leland, correct?"
My rival nodded. "Can you please heal my Pokémon, Nurse Toki?"
"Yes, of course."
After Weldon gave her his six Poké Balls, she went to the healing station.
"Weldon!" I gasped. "You did make it after all."
He took off his cap and brushed his black hair back. "The humidity's killing me..."
I sweat dropped. "Um...okay..."
After putting his hat back on, he looked at me, stone-faced. "Let me be frank, Summer. I'm just here to help you train. That's all."
"So...you don't want a vacation?"
He muttered, "Winners don't go on vacations."
I stroked my chin as Lightning rolled her eyes. "I don't really agree with that statement. Anyway, we should get going to Petalburg City before it gets too hot."
He looked at me with disdain. "Aren't we going to train today?"
"I would if you'd do something fun."
"Nice try, Summer."
I chuckled. "Worth a shot. Besides, I'd rather get lodging at the Pokémon Center first before I start training."
Weldon sighed. "Guess I have no choice since I'm traveling with you…"
I held back a response as Nurse Toki brought Weldon his Pokémon.
He nodded courteously before opening the door. "Come on, let's get moving."
I shrugged. "All right. Bye, Nurse Toki."
She grinned. "Good luck, Summer and Weldon!"
I put on my brown visor, and we exited the building. We were about to head west onto Route 102 when I saw Lapis struggling to move around an agitated teenager trying to protect something on the ground.
"Get outta my way, punk!" Lapis roared.
The long, black-haired stranger straightened his khaki jacket and adjusted his similarly colored shorts. "No way!" he shouted in a whiny tone. "These footprints could belong to a rare Pokémon!"
"And I'm telling ya, that ain't footprints of any Pokémon!"
I glanced at the dirt and saw large rounded tracks with indented claw marks. That doesn't look like a Pokémon to me either. I looked up to see what Weldon thought, but he already snuck past the arguing pair.
"HEY!" Lapis growled. "That ain't fair!" He saw me and pointed at the nerd. "You, Scorcher! Tell him those ain't Pokémon prints!"
I stroked my chin. "All I can tell is that...it's a Pokémon-human hybrid!"
The nerd adjusted his thick glasses. "That can't be right… I've never heard of a Pokémon-human hybrid before… This needs more analysis!"
Zuli laughed. "That's so funny!"
The boy created a fence with his arms, angering the Nuzlocke Trainer. "I'll get you for this!" he swore as he and Zuli, still amused, marched to Route 103.
"Come on, Summer!" Weldon shouted impatiently. "We don't have all day!"
"Oh, right! Coming!" Lightning and I slid past the muttering teen and rejoined Weldon.
We traveled through the tall grass, I noticed two young Trainers around the age of eight talking by a grove of dark green trees. Although their physical appearances were different, for some reason, they wore the same yellow shirts, blue jeans, and blue caps.
I was about to walk over to them when Weldon scoffed, "Didn't you want to get to Petalburg City?"
"We're halfway there. Besides, don't you think it's odd they're wearing the same clothes?"
"I never really paid much attention to that."
I shook my head and approached the youngsters. The boys' eyes grew wide with recognition.
"Oh my gosh!" the one with blue eyes gasped. "It's Summer Scorcher!"
The other with deep brown eyes whipped out a small notepad. "Ms. Summer, can I please have your autograph?"
I smiled. "Of course. Who should I sign this for?"
"C-Calvin."
I turned to his friend. "Do you want one too?"
"Yes, please! For Allen!"
After signing their spiraled books, I let them pet Lightning. Then I asked, "What are you two doing here? And why are you wearing the same clothes?"
Allen replied, "We're part of the Nuzlocke Challenge."
"Really?"
Calvin explained, "Yeah, we're some of the Trainers that Lapis guy has to battle. We just stand at certain spots and challenge him when he's in our sights! If we win, he loses the challenge. But if we lose, we have to pay him money."
"I see."
Allen fidgeted. "I'm nervous though… He sounds really mean; we could hear him yelling from Oldale Town…"
Calvin dug his right toe into the dirt. "You're telling me, Allen. And I have to battle him first…"
I looked at the scared boys and said, "Just take a deep breath and stay calm. Remember, your Pokémon are relying on you for guidance. Give it your all, and ignore any insults he may hurl at you. Besides, after this, you won't have to battle him anymore."
We laughed.
"You're right," Allen said. "Thanks, Summer!"
"You're welcome. Thank you for going through this challenge."
I shook their hands and hugged them before waving goodbye and joining Weldon. To my surprise, he didn't wander off or even look annoyed. He was…smiling.
I smirked. "What?"
My rival glanced away, frowning. "Y-You're too nice to those kids."
I raised an eyebrow. "Too nice?"
We continued our walk, and he explained, "You can't be a nice person if you want to make it to the top."
I frowned. "It's important to be nice, Weldon, to be a positive role model."
"It won't make you a Champion."
"That's not true. Red and Champion Lance aren't like that at all. Even Champion Wallace is both kind and strong."
"Champion Wallace?"
"The Hoenn Champion. He's also a Master Coordinator."
Weldon furrowed his brows. "No wonder why Hoenn doesn't have a focus on competitive battling."
I held back a retort. Despite his cruel words, behind them was a feeling of longing. I changed the subject once I saw several large wooden, red-roofed buildings in the distance.
"On, look. It's Petalburg City."
My rival was surprised. "It's...quite large for a rural city."
I grinned. "It is the nearest largest city to home, besides Slateport City. Let's see if the Gym is allowing challenges right now."
"You're just going to go inside and challenge the Gym Leader?"
"Of course not! I still need to prepare. I heard his Pokémon are some of the strongest in the region."
This piqued the boy's interest. "What type does he use?"
"Normal."
He shivered. "I hope this guy's not another Whitney."
I laughed, causing him to look away. "I hope not either. Besides, there are no Miltank native to Hoenn, so I should be fine."
We followed the main street to the gym, a two story stone building with dark wooden frames, a slanted blue-tiled roof, and bronze trim. A large sign was placed on the door. It said, "Gym Leader Norman is currently not taking Gym challenges this month. He will send a notice when his Gym is reopened."
I shrugged. "Oh well."
Weldon, on the other hand, muttered, "That is not acceptable."
"Hey, at least it'll give me more time to prepare."
"True…" Weldon looked around. "Where's the Pokémon Center anyway?"
"Not far."
"Sounds good."
We headed to the center of the city and walked into the familiar red-roofed white building. When we approached the reception desk, the nurse gave us a big smile. She had tan skin, long dark brown hair, hazel eyes, and an orange blossom pin fastened over her right ear.
She greeted with a warm voice. "Summer! Welcome back!"
I grinned back. "It's good to see you again, Nurse Touka."
"How's my sister doing?"
"Nurse Toki's doing well. She had a rough encounter with the Nuzlocke Trainer earlier, but other than that, she's fine."
Nurse Touka sighed. "I hope he's not as bothersome as what the PLA told us. Anyway, who's the young man with you? Your boyfriend?"
I pushed a strand of hair back. "No, this is Weldon. He's one of my rivals and my traveling partner." I turned to him and noticed his cheeks were slightly red.
The woman smiled. "It's nice to meet you, Weldon."
He was taken aback, but he replied, "Th-Thank you. It's nice to meet you too."
"So, will you be staying here tonight, Summer?"
I nodded. "Are there any rooms available?"
"Yes! There are two rooms right now, but only for tonight. Are you fine if they're next to each other?"
"Sure, that's fine with me."
My rival added, "Yeah, just fine."
Nurse Touka flashed a coy smile as she handed us our room keys. "Your rooms are by the cafeteria. Hopefully it won't be too loud during meal times."
I chuckled. "Thanks, Nurse Touka. See you later!"
"Bye, Summer and Weldon. Enjoy your time in Petalburg City!"
We walked past the cafeteria entryway and put our heavier items inside. After a quick lunch of sandwiches and Fresh Water, we went outside.
Weldon and Lightning wiped their foreheads. The former sighed, "Darn this humidity."
I shrugged. "It's not that bad yet. Besides, weren't you the one who wanted to train?"
He gritted his teeth. "Not in this weather. Guess I'd better get used to it."
"I'd say," Lightning concurred. "I need the exercise."
I stroked my chin. "Actually, I wanted to train with Blaze first."
She scratched her head with her tail. "Why Blaze?"
"It's because you want to test your bond with him, right?"
I was surprised by Weldon's response. "Yeah… How did you know?"
He crossed his arms and flashed a confident smile. "I paid attention to your battle with Mom. You definitely need to up your game if you want to match his intensity."
"You...didn't have to be so blunt about it."
"You wanted me to train you, right? I have to be if you want to get better."
I sighed. "Fair enough."
We walked to Route 104, west of Petalburg City. The ocean breeze near an old hut by the bay gave Weldon and Lightning some relief.
I let out Blaze, and he cracked his knuckles.
Weldon let out his Electabuzz, who mimicked the Fire type's warm-up.
"Now then," he stated. "Let's see how good Blaze's reflexes are. I'll just use Thunder Punch and Mega Kick while you use Fire Punch, Blaze Kick, and Sky Uppercut."
"So a physical combat battle. All right, sounds good to me."
I looked at Blaze, and he was ready to fight. No synchronization right now. I just need to guide Blaze with my words alone. I waved my arm forward. "Fire Punch!"
"Electabuzz, Thunder Punch!"
Both Pokémon charged each other, their fists colliding. They then exchanged punches, with both landing and evading hits. Blaze was slightly faster, but I knew that his stamina would drain more quickly with each connected fist.
Time to change tactics. "Blaze, use Blaze Kick!"
"Counter with Mega Kick!"
The Fire type landed a fiery roundhouse kick into Electabuzz's right arm. The Electric type winced but was able to execute a powerful blow to Blaze's midsection. The Blaze Pokémon slid back, rubbing his stomach. Both Pokémon, however, were eager to continue.
Weldon smirked. "Not bad, Summer. But let's see how you handle this! Electabuzz-"
"HELP!"
A shout rang from the woods down the path. We paused.
"That sounded like it came from Petalburg Woods," I stated. "Sorry, Weldon, but can we put training on hold?"
He crossed his arms. "I guess we can. Come on, let's see what's going on."
We returned our Pokémon and ran inside the entrance. The sun immediately was blocked by the tall trees; only gaps in between them allowed pockets of light to filter through.
Lightning and I closed our eyes, focusing on the source of the cry.
"HELP!"
"There!" I whispered, with Lightning pointing down a dirt path.
We snuck into the woods and spotted two figures and a small "m"-shaped blob in a sheltered clearing. Weldon motioned me to a thick tree trunk, and we hid behind it.
A gruff male voice threatened, "No one's here to help you. Just give me the information I need, and I'll be on my way."
"P-Please…" an elderly male voice whimpered. "I-I really don't know where it is…only the g-general area."
Why does that old man's voice sound so familiar?
Sounds of trampled vegetation echoed from the clearing. "I don't believe you. Now, tell me what I want to know, or your dear Peeko will suffer an unfortunate fate."
Peeko? Wait, I know who that man!
I tried to find some way to get closer, but stepping on the mature grass would raise an alarm.
"What are you doing?!" Weldon hissed.
I cupped his mouth, and I regretted it once I felt his saliva on my fingers. Once he stayed motionless, I wiped my hand on my capris. We waited, hesitant on what the cloaked stranger was thinking.
Then he said, "Must've been a Wurmple. Now then, where were we?" A Poké Ball opened, and the screech of a Crobat rang through the trees. "Crobat, Cross Poison."
Oh no you don't! "Lightning, Iron Tail!"
The Raichu immediately dashed forward, swinging her silver tail into a purple poison cut in the shape of an "X". Knowing our cover was blown, I followed Lightning, but Weldon remained put.
Though I couldn't see the cloaked stranger's face, I felt his fury rising. "Looks like we have company after all."
"Mr. Briney!" I called, "Are you okay?"
The elderly man, dressed in a red robe with white trim, looked at my face and gasped. "S-Summer! Thank goodness!"
The stranger muttered, "So that's her." Then, he said, "This matter doesn't concern you."
"It does now!" I exclaimed, standing in front of the elderly man. Lightning crouched on all fours, sparks emitting from her cheeks.
Scoffing, he replied, "Absol, Sucker Punch."
Absol? I don't see-
"Get down!" Weldon cried. He pushed me onto the grass, and we narrowly avoided black scythe from a dark Pokémon with white fur. After she landed, she returned to her Trainer's side, prominently showing the black oval on her forehead and red eyes.
[Absol, the Disaster Pokémon. It sharply senses even subtle changes in the sky and the land to predict natural disasters. It is a long-lived Pokémon that has a life-span of 100 years.]
My rival helped me up, and he retorted, "That's a low blow."
"That's rich." the stranger sneered. "Coming from a disgraced battling family Trainer."
Weldon clenched his fists and didn't have a rebuttal.
I suggested, "How about this? We have a doubles battle, with the winner deciding on what to do with Mr. Briney."
"Sounds good with me," the Kantonian growled.
The cloaked man chuckled. "Sure, why not?"
"Um, Summer?" Mr. Briney asked. "Don't I get a say in this?"
I looked at the worried man. "Don't worry, Mr. Briney. We won't let anything bad happen to you."
This appeased him a little, and Peeko jumped into her owner's arms to comfort him.
I turned my attention back to the upcoming battle. The man's Crobat and Absol awaited his command. Lightning walked forward as Weldon sent out one of his strongest Pokémon, Gyarados. Our opponents' eyes flickered with fear from seeing the Water type, causing them to lose some of their strength. Anger emanated from Weldon, I was worried this would affect his judgment.
The stranger made the first move. "Absol, Double Team. Crobat, Air Cutter on Gyarados."
The Dark type formed multiple copies in front of us just as the Poison type hurled a sickle of air with his right wing.
Weldon shouted, "Gyarados, use Surf!"
The Water type roared as a torrent of water surrounded his body. A large wave towered over us.
I was shocked. "Weldon! What are you doing?!" Seeing he wasn't responding, I shouted, "Lightning, protect yourself with Iron Tail!"
She curled into a ball and sliced the water crashing onto her. At least the wave disintegrated the Air Cutter and destroyed the Absol copies.
I breathed a sigh of relief. "You okay, Lightning?"
After she nodded, Weldon finally asked, "W-What just happened?"
I explained, "Weldon. This is a doubles battle. Some moves behave differently compared to singles battles, remember?"
He bit his lip. "Sorry...I forgot about that."
"That's okay. Let's do another strategy. Lightning, use Quick Attack on Absol!"
She charged at the Disaster Pokémon in a streak of white light, slightly disorienting her opponent before striking her in the chest.
Before the stranger could issue a defensive maneuver, Weldon commanded, "Gyarados, Waterfall!"
The Atrocious Pokémon was confused. "Which one, Weldon?!" he demanded in a deep, raspy voice.
His Trainer couldn't understand what was wrong, allowing the man to take advantage. "Crobat, Cross Poison on Gyarados."
Gyarados roared in pain as the X-shaped poison hit his face. His face turned purple, and he began to breathe heavily.
"Absol, Night Slash on Lightning."
The white Pokémon raised her right front paw and swung her large dark claws upward at the Electric type. Lightning flew into the air and slammed into Gyarados. Both Pokémon fell onto the grass, panting. Absol landed gracefully, but winced as sparks coursed through her body.
Weldon was shaking. His anger and fear hurt my heart.
"Weldon, calm down," I advised as our Pokémon regained their footing. "It's okay."
"No, it's NOT!"
His tone startled me.
Tears trickled down his face. "I-I can't… I-I just can't…"
"Weldon…"
The stranger snickered and proudly crossed his arms. "Looks like I win. Now hand the old man over."
"No, I won't." I stepped forward, pushing Weldon back. He wiped his eyes and was a little confused on what I was doing. "Weldon, do you want me to take over? You don't have to continue if you're not ready."
He steadied himself with some deep breaths. A small smile appeared, but it disappeared as he replied, "I can keep going. Thanks, Summer."
I grinned. "Of course, Weldon. Why don't you lead, and I'll follow?"
"That's a good plan."
We looked at the masked stranger, whom I was surprised didn't attempt to gain the upper hand. He kept his arms crossed, and I was able to make out his fierce dark eyes.
The stranger asked, "Are you two done with your little pow-wow?"
Weldon stepped forward. "Yes, we are." He adjusted his cap and shouted, "Gyarados, use Ice Beam on Crobat!"
As the Water type prepared an icy orb in his mouth, the stranger countered, "Absol, Sucker Punch Gyarados."
The Dark type leapt in front of Gyarados' face, startling him.
I commanded, "Lightning, use Thunderbolt on Absol!"
She charged her cheeks and shocked the Disaster Pokémon with a lightning bolt. This allowed Gyarados to hit both opposing Pokémon. Crobat and Absol growled as their Trainer became impatient.
"Guess you aren't as weak as they say," he stated. "But it seems like I made some progress with my mission. Looks like my work here is done."
"Hold on!" Weldon shouted. "This battle's not over yet!"
"It is now."
Crobat released a dark cloud of smoke over us. After a minute, the smoke disappeared, as well as the stranger and his Pokémon.
I turned to Mr. Briney, who still clutched Peeko in his arms. "Are you okay, Mr. Briney?"
"Y-Yes, thanks to you two." He got up and smiled. "Why don't we have tea back at my house? It's the least I can do to thank my rescuers."
I nodded. "Thanks, Mr. Briney."
We walked out of the dense woods towards the wooden hut. The elderly man opened the door and allowed us to enter first. The home was snug, with a small table by a kitchen, a living room, and doors leading to the bathroom and the bedroom. The man and his Wingull prepared the food while Weldon, Lightning, and I sat at the driftwood table.
Weldon looked better, but I could tell he was still shaken.
"Everything okay, Weldon?" I asked.
"How did he know I was a battling family Trainer?" he muttered. "I never met him before…"
I tried to console him. "Maybe, he heard about you from the media."
"That may be, but still…" He looked at his Poké Balls. "I haven't battled since I lost in the Silver League. I must've looked stupid out there."
I winced as the melancholy pricked my heart. "It's natural to have some battling rust. I know you'll be able to shake it off as we continue training together."
He weakly smiled. "I appreciate it, Summer."
Mr. Briney and Peeko carried a white china tea set and a plate with Magikarp-shaped cookies. After passing the fragile cups and the snacks towards us, I poured everyone a steaming cup of green tea.
Weldon was surprised by my actions. "Th-Thanks, Summer."
I beamed. "Of course, Weldon."
After I sat down and passed Lightning a cookie, the elderly man said, "Thank you both again. I wouldn't know what I'd done if you two hadn't come along."
"I'm just glad you're alright, Mr. Briney," I replied, picking up a cookie.
He chuckled. "You haven't changed much since we last saw each other. I'm glad you're traveling around Hoenn this time around."
Weldon raised an eyebrow. "How do you know each other?"
Mr. Briney explained, "Summer and her friends used to walk this route to the Rustboro City Trainer School. I used to be a sailor, so one of the best parts of my day was greeting the schoolkids before I went out to sea and when I came back. Now that I'm retired, I invite the schoolkids here to learn about ocean life and sailing. And every summer, I let the locals fish and swim near my house, so she and her family came by often."
I thought I heard Weldon mutter, "That must've been nice..."
"Though," the former sailor slyly said, "I never expected to see Camilla's second son here."
Weldon choked on his tea. After he coughed, he asked, "How many people does my mom know?"
Mr. Briney laughed. "Not just her, but your dad too."
The teen was interested. "Really? What was he like?"
He leaned back into his chair. "Let me see... He was curious, eager to learn, and passionate about his interest in archaeology. He also loved history and mythology, quite the scholarly one. But he was also shy and meek, preferring to find solutions and avoid conflict."
Weldon sighed. "Just like what Mom told me."
"Well..." The man crossed his arms. "I'm not sure I should tell you this. But-"
"That's okay. I don't want to know just yet."
I felt a deep pain in Weldon's heart, different from the depression-influenced emotions. Why did it involve his dad?
"I understand," Mr. Briney said with a nod. "But you are welcome to hear it when you're ready."
I looked at my Pokégear and saw it was almost 5 o'clock. "It's getting late. We should head back to Petalburg City."
"Very well. Goodbye, you two."
I smiled. "Bye, Mr. Briney."
"Goodbye," Weldon stated.
We exited the house and quietly walked back to our lodging. Weldon and I separated for the rest of the day, so I prepared for our next stop: Petalburg Woods.
