With their training in Petalburg Woods complete, Summer and Weldon encountered a lost Bellossom on North Route 104. They returned her to the Rodeo Lagoon Plant Nursery, where the former used to volunteer at. After she reunited with the employees, the young Trainers returned to training, only to encounter more of Summer's friends. One, Roxanne, is the current Rustboro City Gym Leader, and the other, Tawny, a long-time friend. Weldon sensed some reluctance from Tawny, but Summer didn't trust his instincts. To prove him wrong, she invites Tawny and her other friend, Clara, to dinner at a new restaurant. Will Summer's oldest friends come, or will Weldon be proven right?
Chapter 8- A Long-Awaited Reunion
Around 1pm, we trudged into the urban metropolis of Rustboro City. The mix of tall skyscrapers and cobblestone buildings reflected the city's humble origins as a quarry town to its current status as the headquarters of the Devon Corporation, the largest company in the Hoenn Region.
Wow...things have changed quite a bit since I graduated. There's definitely a lot more skyscrapers now, and the new Devon Corporation building is finished. I noticed Weldon admiring the scenery. "So, what do you think? This is your first major city in Hoenn."
He cracked a smile. "I'd have to say, it's really impressive. Nothing like Pewter City."
Lightning's stomach growled. "Summer!" she whined. "Where's the Pokémon Center?"
"Just down the main street behind the PokéMart," I replied, pointing north. "Come on, let's have lunch."
We walked into the main city square, where the familiar red-roofed, two-story building greeted us. Once inside, the nurse, a tall olive-skinned woman, with was conversing with a male Trainer at the reception desk. Her charcoal black hair tied into a bun, and a silver Aron pin was fastened onto her cap. In her mid-thirties, she was slightly well-built for her age. Once he left, I returned Lightning and we approached the desk.
Her brown eyes grew wide as she said in a cheery voice, "As I live and breathe! Summer Scorcher, welcome back!"
I chuckled. "Thank you, Nurse Kumi. It's good to see you too."
The nurse looked at Weldon and greeted, "And a big welcome to you too, Weldon."
He began to sweat, despite the air-conditioning. "H-Hi…"
She giggled. "Oh, no need to be so nervous. Your mom and I go way back, so I already know who you are and what your situation is." She glanced around and whispered, "I know that the Hoennese aren't too interested in your hiatus, but the other visitors around here...they may give you a hard time."
He nodded. "Thanks for the heads up."
After taking our Poké Balls and putting them on the healing machine, Nurse Kumi returned her gaze onto me. "Now then, I assume you need rooms?"
"Yes. Are there two available?"
She scanned her computer. "Let me see… Ah, yes. There is one room on the main floor, and one room on the second floor."
I turned to Weldon. "I'm fine with either option. Why don't you choose?"
"I'll take the first floor. It'll be easier for me to avoid people."
"Sounds good to me. Then I'll take the upstairs room."
"All right then." She handed us our keys and our Poké Balls. "Enjoy your time here in Rustboro City. Don't forget to check out the new Sableye Cave Restaurant; if you show them this coupon, you'll get twenty percent off your meal."
I looked at the glossy purple paper decorated in gold lettering. "Oooh… Sounds delicious. Thanks, Nurse Kumi."
We waved goodbye, had a quick lunch of sandwiches and salad, then entered the hallway to the first floor rooms. Luckily, there was no one around.
"What are you going to do?" I asked my rival.
"Well, take a shower first."
I giggled. "Yeah, I should too. Then what?"
He crossed his arms. "Maybe do some research on Roxanne."
"You're already studying for my match?"
He raised an eyebrow. "Don't you do that when you first enter a city with a Gym?"
"Well…"
He groaned. "Don't answer, I have an idea on what you do. How about you?"
I touched my Pokégear. "I'm thinking about meeting up with Tawny and Clara at the new restaurant Nurse Kumi mentioned."
"Are you sure they want to see you?" he asked, glaring at me.
Not this again. I brushed my hair back and stared at him. "I'm pretty sure, Weldon. Tawny's just busy, and I'm sure Clara is too. Having dinner with them should be the best way to catch up."
"But what if they don't show up?"
"They'll be there, Weldon. I know my friends, and I know they won't desert me." I paused. That sounded...a lot more forceful than I thought.
He leaned against the wall and brushed his hair back. He sighed and glanced at the lobby. "Okay, I won't stop you. But...just be prepared, okay?"
I didn't know what to say, so I remained silent.
Once he entered his room, Lightning and I went to ours. Setting my things down on the chair by the door, I felt my Pokégear vibrate several times. I whipped it out, hoping it was my best friends, but it was just Suzy and Tomoko.
"Hi, Summer!" Suzy wrote. "Sorry we didn't respond to you earlier. School's been pretty busy. My fourth graders are quite a handful, as usual."
"Same here," Tomoko added. "Well, just more on the medical than educational side. Nursing's been more grueling as of late. Do you want to join us tonight at the Sableye Cave Restaurant for the closing happy hour?"
"Yeah! They have discounted fondue, and it's so good!"
I smiled halfheartedly and typed, "Sorry, guys. I'm going to be busy tonight. How about later this week?"
After a few minutes, Suzy responded, "Sure, Summer! We can have lunch at Sugar Grain Bakery!"
"Sounds good," Tomoko chimed. "See you then, Summer!"
I was relieved, but had slight pangs of guilt. I want to hang out with them, but I really need to see Clara and Tawny.
"Hey, Summer!" Lightning interrupted. "Aren't you going to take your shower?"
"Oh, yeah. Thanks for reminding me." I handed her my device. "Here, you can go ahead and read your manga."
"Hooray!"
As Lightning settled onto the bed, I gathered my shower items and headed to the second floor bathroom for a shower. The slowly appearing steam and the hot water cascading over my hair reawakened my body. Normally, these sensations would help me de-stress, but I couldn't help but wonder. Was Weldon really right? Or does he only care I'd be distracted from training?
A few hours later...
Lightning and I stepped out of the Pokémon Center, greeted by a mild breeze. Instead of my traveling clothes, I wore the dress and sandals my parents gave me when I returned home, as well as a long aqua blue cardigan. I checked my Pokégear. Looks like Tawny's coming, but I still haven't heard from Clara. I hope Tawny told her about me being back.
As I fixed my hair, the Raichu said, "I didn't know you packed those clothes, Summer."
I chuckled. "I figured it'll come in handy. Since the weather and environment changes with each route and city, I brought some extra sets of clothes so I don't always have to wear the same thing. Besides, the restaurant we're going to is not as casual as the other eateries we usually go to."
She snickered, rubbing her paws together. "I can't wait! I never had fondue before!" Then, she stopped. "Wait, doesn't this restaurant also have a Pokémon height requirement? I'm the right height, aren't I?"
Seeing her panicked expression, I finished my braid and reassured, "Don't worry, I checked. The maximum height requirement is about 2 feet, 5 inches, or around 0.8 meters. You're about 2 feet, so you're perfectly fine."
Lightning's grin returned. "Hooray! More fancy food for me!"
I laughed. "Well don't each too much! Otherwise, you have to be carried back in your Poké Ball."
"Hey, I'm totally fine with that!"
Weldon then exited the building wearing his red jacket. He froze, his mouth slightly agape.
My heart skipped and I forcefully brushed my braid back. Oh yeah. This is the first time he ever saw me in a dress. Just stay calm; be his friend, remember?
Finally, he spoke. "Y-You look nice, Summer."
I forced a big smile. "Thanks, Weldon. Where are you heading off to?"
"Oh, just exploring. Maybe find some dinner around here."
I crossed my arms. "Will you be okay by yourself?"
Weldon took out a pair of dark sunglasses from his jacket pocket and put them on. "Don't worry, Summer. I'll be fine." He then paused before saying. "Have fun tonight."
He walked towards the downtown area up north and disappeared in the crowd.
His words echoed in my mind. 'Have fun tonight.' I really hope so. No, why am I thinking that? I will have fun tonight!
"Come on, Summer!" Lightning shouted with enthusiasm. "I'm starving."
"All right. Let's go then."
We also entered the downtown area, which was filled with stores and restaurants tailored to the hard-working minors, the studious youths from the Trainer School, and the eager tourists entranced by the sights of the big city. I smiled at the stores and restaurants I passed by so many times during school.
Wow, I can't believe they're still here. The Sugar Grain Bakery, the Daito Burrito Restaurant, and Surskit Stationery. I should visit them while we're here. I'm sure Lightning and Weldon would love to go there.
Then, we finally made it to Sableye Cave Restaurant, a dark purple building with a large marquee. On it showed its gem-loving mascot, a dark purple Pokémon with light blue gemstone eyes, a red gemstone on its chest, combined with jagged claws, ears, and feet. The Sableye was sitting on top of the words, roasting some sapphires and emeralds over ruby flames. I pushed the door open and saw a large waiting area lined with purple velvet benches along the walls. The room was dim but brighter than the main dining room. At the counter, a young brunette woman in a dark purple blouse and black shirt was looking at a list.
She looked up when I approached. Her blue eyes sparkled, and she said in a mild voice, "Summer Scorcher, is that you?"
I was surprised. "Y-Yes. I'm sorry, I don't recognize you."
She chuckled as she brushed her ponytail back. "That's quite all right. It's been a long time since we last saw each other. My name's Rachel, and I used to work at Surskit Stationery."
"Oh, yeah. I remember. You also used to teach a workshop on public speaking, right?"
"Right! You were the only one younger than ten in that class, and you did really well over the course of ten weeks."
I nervously laughed. "Well...I still don't really like speaking in large crowds."
"Don't worry, it'll still take practice. Anyway, are you here to eat?"
"Yes, do you have a table for three?"
She scanned her paper. "Yes, I do. When is the rest of your party coming?"
"They should be here soon."
"All right then. You can wait for them at your table." Rachel picked up three black menus and guided me and Lightning into the main dining room.
It was a good thing she guided us, as the interior really was dark. The only illumination was from the lit red, blue, and green candles on the tables. Rachel stopped in front of a small booth by a window, and I slid onto the seat. After Lightning followed, the hostess placed the menus on the table.
After thanking her, I picked up a menu, dreading the struggle to read it. However, I was surprised to see the words illuminated on the dark laminated paper.
Lightning's eyes sparkled. "Wow… That's so fancy."
"At least I can read it without needing the candlelight."
"That's true." She glanced around the dark surroundings. "Errol would be home here."
"He would, but he's too big, and his eyes will scare everyone that walks by."
Laughing, she replied, "That's true."
I then read the menu. Hm… Cheese fondue with bread cubes, vegetables, and fruits; chicken, beef, or fish skewers cooked in a broth or sauce; and chocolate fondue with cake cubes, fruits, and marshmallows. And they're packages if you want to try all of them. They even have small portions for Pokémon called Poképortions. This is really fancy; I guess the regions are exchanging our culture for meat and produce products more often now.
To my surprise, Rachel returned to my table. "Hi Summer. It looks like I'll be your server as well. Would you like anything to drink? We have water, a variety of lemonades, and a variety of sodas; all are free refills."
"Oh, I'll get a Pecha lemonade." After she wrote down my order, I asked, "Have my friends come by yet?"
"No, I haven't seen anyone else come in. But I'll still keep a lookout."
I softly smiled. "Thanks, Rachel."
Once Rachel left, I looked at my Pokégear. I was temporarily blinded by the bright screen, but after I dimmed the lighting, I saw no responses from either of them. I guess they must be running late.
After getting my drink, I sipped the sweet and tart liquid and continued to look at the menu. "Lightning, do you want to eat first?"
"Are you sure, Summer?"
I rubbed her head. "Yes. After all, you're so eager to try the food."
Her face filled with guilt, she nodded. "I know…"
"Don't worry. I'll eat before you know it. Now what do you want?"
"Hm… Can I get something savory first?"
"Sure." I made eye contact with Rachel, and she immediately came over. "Rachel, can I get the Pokémon portion of the cheese fondue for Lightning?"
"Good choice," she remarked as she wrote down the order. "How about for yourself, Summer?"
"I'll wait until my friends come."
"All right. But let me know if you want anything."
After she left, I mused over the options. But in the back of my head, Weldon's words kept ringing, Maybe you and Tawny aren't as close as you thought. Are you sure they want to see you?
I sighed, trying to push the negative thoughts back. Please, guys. Please come…
The minutes ticked by, and eventually, the minutes became hours. I stirred my third drink as Lightning finished her Poképortion of chocolate fondue.
"Summer...are you sure they're coming?" she asked.
I glanced at my Pokégear for what felt like the hundredth time. "I certainly hope so. It's almost one hour before closing."
Suddenly, a message from Tawny appeared. My excitement turned to dread as I read, "Sorry, Summer. Something came up and we couldn't make it. I hope you understand."
I deeply sighed, causing my Pokémon to worry. "Looks like they're not coming."
"WHAT?!" she screamed. "They waited three hours to say that?! Some friends!"
Rachel ran over. "I heard shouting over here. Did something happen, Summer?"
I forced a smile. "Oh, it was nothing, Rachel. But it looks like my friends couldn't make it."
She frowned. "Oh, I'm sorry, Summer. Do you still want to order any food? It's now closing happy hour, so the cheese and chocolate fondues are twenty percent off. You can also combine it with your coupon."
I clenched my left fist, trying to maintain my composure. "I-I'm fine, Rachel. I'll just pay for my drink and Lightning's food."
"A-All right. I'll be right back with your bill."
The waitress walked away, allowing my tears to slowly streak down my face. I grabbed a napkin and blotted my eyes. But the paper cloth couldn't hide my sniffles.
Lightning nuzzled me and whispered, "It's okay, Summer. You'll always have us."
I gave her a soft smile. "Thanks, Lightning. I hope you enjoyed the meal."
"Actually." She handed me a wooden skewer of sliced Pecha Berries. "You can have my last Berry skewer. There's still a little bit of chocolate left in the pot. I guess I should've saved you more, huh?"
I chuckled. "I appreciate it, Lightning. Thanks."
After I ate the sweet and velvety smooth combination, two excited female voices reverberated in the dining room. The girls were about my age, and their Pokémon were close by. One girl carried a pink and cream colored kitten-like Pokémon with large ears, slit-like eyes. Her tail ended with a large pink oval tip and three yellow balls attached by pins. The other Pokémon, who sitting in the easy yoga pose, floated next to her Trainer. The black eyes on her white onion-shaped head controlled her blue body using a blue psychic energy.
[Skitty, the Kitten Pokémon. A Skitty's adorably cute behavior makes it highly popular. In battle, it makes its tail puff out. It threatens foes with a sharp growl. Meditite, the Meditate Pokémon. It continually meditates for hours every day. As a result of rigorous and dedicated yoga training, it has tempered its spiritual power so much it can fly.]
The girl with the Skitty noticed us and exclaimed in a cheery tone, "Hey, it's Summer!"
"Summer!" the other girl with the Meditite chimed.
They approached our table, and I could finally make out their appearances. The Skitty's Trainer had a slightly pale face dotted with dark freckles on her cheeks, thin black hair that stopped around her neck, and dark brown eyes. Her thick black hairpin matched her gray dress and blue cardigan. The Meditite's Trainer had a light olive skinned face, wavy black hair held back by a dark blue headband, and light brown eyes protected by black glasses. Unlike her friend, she wore light blue dress and a light gray cardigan.
My eyes brightened. "Suzy, Tomoko! It's good to see you two."
Suzy laughed. "It's good to see you too, Summer. How come you didn't tell us you were here for the closing happy hour?"
Her teasing tone reminded me of our conversations back at Trainer School. I softly chuckled. "Well, my plans unfortunately changed."
"Can we join you?" Tomoko asked, her voice was as soft as it was back then. "It'll be nice to have fondue with someone else besides us."
My heart leaped with joy. "Sure." Once they entered the booth, I showed them my partner. "Girls, this is Lightning, one of my Pokémon."
The Raichu waved at the four.
"Wow, what a cute Raichu!" the teacher remarked. She then motioned to her partner, who was now nestled in her lap. "This is Bao, my Skitty."
"And this is Atalanta, my Meditite," Tomoko added as she pointed to the levitating Pokémon.
"It's nice to meet you, Bao and Atalanta."
The Normal type mewed, "Nice to finally meet you, Summer!"
"Suzy and Tomoko told us so much about you," the Fighting type remarked with a firm tone.
"Oh, really?" I teased.
Tomoko raised an eyebrow, then realized what happened. "Oh, yeah. You can understand them, can't you?"
"Yeah, that's right."
"That's so cool, Summer," Suzy said with awe. "The Trainer School's eventually getting the translators for the teachers. I can't wait to hear what the Pokémon say."
I giggled. "It's pretty fun, though sometimes it gets a little crazy."
We all laughed just as Rachel came over. "Summer, I didn't know you're friends with Suzy and Tomoko."
"Hi, Rachel!" they chimed.
I raised an eyebrow. "How do you know them, Rachel?"
"They come in every Wednesday for the closing happy hour."
Suzy beamed. "Yup! We call it the Camerupt Fondue Day."
I imagined the Fire type in my head, which was a large orange camel-like Pokémon with two brown, craggy volcano humps and three large blue rings on each of its sides. "That does make sense."
"Wait, I don't," Lightning complained.
I ruffled her fur. "I'll tell you later."
Rachel clicked her pen. "Now then, what would you like?"
"Summer, you can choose the fondues," Tomoko offered. "We've been here so many times, we tried everything."
"Thanks. Can we get the Snowpoint cheese fondue, then the milk chocolate fondue?"
"Excellent choices. How about for Bao and Atalanta?"
"The Poképortions of chocolate fondue," Suzy replied.
"All right. And drinks?"
"A Watmel Berry cucumber cooler," the teacher said.
"And an iced tea for me," the young nurse chimed.
"Sounds good. Any more lemonade for you, Summer?"
I looked at my empty glass and felt the liquid settle in my stomach. "I'll just get water for now."
Rachel chuckled. "All right. I'll bring you the drinks shortly."
After she left, Suzy asked in excitement, "So, Summer, how's your journey going so far?"
"Yeah," the Meditite owner said with a smile. "We want to hear all about it."
"Really?" I stroked my chin. "This one or the very first one?"
The teacher snickered. "The very first one, of course!"
Tomoko nodded. "Yeah, what's Kanto like?"
"Well, let's see..."
An hour later...
Our laughter echoed in the now empty dining room.
I grinned as I swiped the last bits of chocolate from the pot with my marshmallow skewer. "I can't believe Alexi tried to make a move on you like that!"
Suzy smirked. "He's still has the troublemaker streak, that's for sure! As if I didn't have to deal with that with my kids!"
Tomoko nudged her friend. "At least he had the decency to run before Suzy called the cops! It was the most exciting thing for us last week. It definitely relived my stress from the graveyard shift."
"Wow..." I muttered, glancing at the empty dish. "I can't believe I missed so much back home."
"But you did so much while you traveled, Summer!" Suzy encouraged. "You battled against so many Trainers and met so many great Pokémon along the way."
Tomoko nodded firmly. "In a way, you inspired us."
"Oh? How so?"
She replied, "Actually, this is actually my second to last week working at the Rustboro City Hospital. I'm going to travel around the region and do residencies at the other main hospitals to get a better feel for what I want to specialize in."
"Now that you mention it," Suzy added. "I was able to convince the school board to allow the fourth-grade classes to do more region-based field trips. We can now go to places like Lilycove City, Mossdeep City, and even Sootopolis City. It'll definitely prepare them if they want to become Trainers or not."
I gasped. "That's amazing! I'm glad I inspired you two to travel more. I wish we could've gone to places like that when we were in Trainer School."
We laughed, but were interrupted when Rachel came by. "Sorry, girls. But we need to close up."
"Oh, sorry, Rachel," I said.
But she grinned. "That's all right. I hope all of you enjoyed yourselves."
Seeing our sleeping Pokémon, I had to agree. After we finished paying for our food and returned our exhausted partners, we exited the building. Luckily, the air wasn't too cold due to the westerly ocean breeze.
I turned to my companions. "Have a safe walk back home."
The girls glanced at each other before returning their gazes to me. Suzy said, "Actually, can we walk you back to the Pokémon Center?"
"Sure. I don't mind, but would it be too late for you guys?"
"We're fine," Tomoko reassured. "We still live close to each other, so we'll head in the same direction."
I nodded, and we strolled through the almost empty downtown area.
After a few minutes, the teacher remarked, "So, what really brought you to the Sableye Cave Restaurant?"
"Yeah," Tomoko added. "We thought you would be somewhere else tonight."
I sighed. "I thought so too. I was supposed to meet up with Tawny and Clara, but they didn't show up."
The girls glanced at each other, then gave me an uneasy look.
Seeing their tone change, I asked, "Do you know why they didn't come?"
My heart panged, sensing Suzy's anxiousness. "Well... I'm not the one to spread rumors... But, I overheard a conversation between Tawny and, most likely Clara, after our 5:30 meeting at the school. It seemed Clara forced her to not come and to give you a delayed message."
I rubbed my left arm. "That's...unsettling..."
"I know it's not something you wanted to hear, Summer."
I looked at my friend's torn face and reassured, "Thanks for telling me, Suzy. I really appreciate you being honest with me."
We then passed by an advertisement for the Slateport City Art Museum. On the light blue paper were several faces, including a girl with brunette hair and blue eyes who looked very familiar.
I stopped and examined it more closely. "Hey, isn't that Clara?"
My friends looked at the face as well. "It is," Tomoko agreed. "And this advertisement's for the upcoming art exhibit next month. It looks like she's climbing up in the art world, just like she said."
I crossed my arms. "Maybe...Maybe I should try to meet with her in Slateport City."
"Are you sure, Summer?" Suzy worriedly asked. "She might actually be living somewhere else, and she really may not want to see you."
"I know. But I have to know why she doesn't want to see me, especially if she's using Tawny against me."
The nurse adjusted her glasses and mused about something. She looked at Suzy, who gave her an understanding nod. "How about this? Why don't we help you track down Clara? We can hang out whenever we're in the same city and talk about our findings."
"Really? But this is more of my problem, not yours."
With a sympathetic smile, Suzy explained, "You haven't changed that much, Summer; you still worry about the happiness and welfare of your friends. And, by extension as your friends, we worry about your happiness and welfare."
I smiled, holding back a tear. "Thanks, you guys. Can I get a group hug?"
"Of course!"
We embraced each other, and their kindness warmed my heart. Afterwards, we made it to the Pokémon Center. After exchanging waves, I entered the quiet lobby.
As usual, Nurse Kumi waited patiently for any late-night visitors. When she saw me, her mood brightened. "There you are, Summer! You've been out pretty late tonight."
I laughed as I approached the reception desk. "Yeah, it was a really unexpected turn of events."
She then leaned forward and whispered, "Someone's been waiting for you for about two hours now. I think he's sleeping on the couch."
I rubbed the back of my head. "Oh, yeah. I must've worried him. I'll check on Weldon."
I waved goodbye and walked to the couch by the television. Weldon was lying on the cushions, interrupting the silence with his soft snoring. Next to him was a book about Hoenn landmarks.
Seems like he's taking my advice after all. I tapped his left shoulder. "Weldon?" I whispered.
His eyes snapped wide open and he bolted upward, forcing me to dodge back. "Wha-? Oh, you're finally back, Summer."
I gave him a sheepish smile. "Yeah. Sorry for making you wait."
He shifted his position, allowing me to sit next to him. "How was your dinner? Did Tawny and Clara come?"
"Um...no... Tawny told me around 9 they weren't able to come."
He frowned. "That's really rude. I...didn't expect my instincts to be right." I could tell he was disappointed. "Are you okay?"
I leaned back and grinned, surprising him. "Yes, actually. I met my other two friends, Suzy and Tomoko, at the restaurant and I hung out with them instead."
"Oh, that's surprising."
I chuckled. "It was. But maybe it's a sign."
"A sign?"
I continued to stare at the ceiling. "To reconnect with my oldest friends. I learned Clara's been avoiding me, and she told Tawny to do the same. I want to see her and know the reason why. Suzy and Tomoko also offered to help me search for Clara."
He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his legs. "I don't know. Won't you get too distracted from your training and battling?"
"I won't. The Hoenn League's still my main priority, and I'll try to find her after during the traveling periods." I gave him a serious expression and asked, "Will you also help me, Weldon?"
Sighing, he answered, "I don't have much of a choice since we're together- I mean, traveling together."
I smiled. "Thanks, Weldon. How was your night downtown?"
He paused before replying, "It was...eventful to say the least. I'll tell you tomorrow; it's getting late."
Checking the clock over the desk, I nodded. "Let's head to bed. I'm planning to challenge Roxanne in a few days, so we'll need all the energy to train and study."
He yawned. "All right. Good night, Summer."
We retreated to our separate rooms, and I slept comfortably knowing my friends supported my decision.
