The day has finally come for Summer's first Gym battle in the Hoenn Region. This challenge was against Roxanne, one of the top students at her alma mater. Before the match, Summer reunited with the former Gym Leader, Jasper, and was surprised to learn what someone else had to do to battle in the Gyms. With schoolchildren and her friends in the stands, Summer waged a close match against Roxanne. Though Aurora and Rocky defeated her Golem and Steelix, Roxanne's strongest Pokémon, Norton, stood as the last obstacle to a victory. Will Summer win against the former student?
Chapter 10: A New Translation
"Battle begin!" Mr. Jasper shouted.
I commanded, "Rocky, use Iron Tail!"
He nodded and raised his tail. But when it began to glow, Rocky was instantly pulled tail first towards the patient Norton.
I...I didn't tell him to do that... What's going on?
Roxanne, however, smirked. "Norton, Protect!"
The Rock type formed a light blue barrier above him, causing the tail to harmlessly bounce off. The Steelix tried to regain his original distance, but something kept him close to the Nosepass. His resistance drained more of the Steel type's stamina.
I gritted my teeth. I can't worry about why it's happening now! I have to help Rocky, but how?!
Roxanne waved her right arm forward. "Rock Slide!"
The Compass Pokémon raised his stubby arms and unleashed a shower of boulders onto Rocky.
"Rocky, Stone Edge!"
He tried to create the two rings of rock shards, but the stones pelted into his body. Rocky roared in pain but was able to launch some shards at Norton before collapsing onto the damaged battlefield. Norton handled the attack well and continued his typical swaying. The Steelix, however, was motionless.
Mr. Jasper waved his left arm. "Rocky is unable to battle! Norton wins!"
I smiled weakly and returned my fallen Pokémon. "Thanks, Rocky. You battled really well; get some rest."
Roxanne put her hands on her hips. "So, did you figure out why Rocky was pulled towards Norton?"
I chuckled. "You saw my expression earlier?"
She smiled. "Don't worry. You're not the first one with that experience. It was Norton's Ability, Magnet Pull."
I stroked my chin. "Oh, I think I remember that ability; it forces Steel types to not switch out."
"That's right. But since that's not always helpful in most battles, I trained Norton to use his ability to draw Steel types towards him to tire them out."
"That's...very strategic. But, why are you telling me this?"
She smirked. "Because I know your last Pokémon won't be affected."
My heart skipped. She really does know who I'm using last.
The crowd murmured in excitement and anticipation. This, after all, was the last round.
"So, Summer," Mr. Jasper said. "Would you like to clear the debris from the battlefield?"
I scanned the cracked floor and shattered rocks. I quickly replied, "Yes, please."
Roxanne laughed. "I second that notion."
The referee nodded, and a pale yellow light covered the ground. After a few seconds, the light faded, revealing a brand new flat battlefield with Norton, the Gym Leader's Nosepass, still rocking back and forth. "All right then. Summer, please select your final Pokémon!"
I nodded threw my last Poké Ball into the air. "Go, Blaze!"
The Blaziken landed square on the clean battlefield. Thanks to the repaired field, he wasn't affected by the Stealth Rock that plagued Aurora.
I took a deep breath. All right. Like how we trained; no synchronicity movement. Here goes nothing.
Mr. Jasper raised his arms. "Battle begin!"
"Blaze, use Flamethrower!"
He inhaled deeply and unleashed a stream of fire at Norton.
Roxanne shouted, "Use Double Team!"
The Nosepass raised his arms and created five identical copies of himself. The Flamethrower passed through a fake, and the remaining four trained their arms on the focused Blaziken. I tried to find the real one, but I couldn't find any discrepancies.
"Now, Norton, Shock Wave!"
The four Nosepass charged blue orbs of electricity and fired a barrage of blue lightning bolts.
"Dodge, Blaze!"
He leapt out of the way, but the bolts reversed direction and hit their target. Blaze landed on his feet, taking the damage well.
I gritted my teeth. I forgot Shock Wave doesn't miss! I just have to destroy find Norton at this point! "Blaze, destroy the copies with Flamethrower!"
With a nod, he swept through the illusions with his fiery attack. When he hit the rightmost one, Norton withstood the attack due to the type advantage. He then hopped to the side towards the center of Roxanne's side and continued swaying back and forth.
That's kind of weird. Why didn't Norton just turn and hop forward?
Roxanne, seeing my concentrated look, quickly shouted, "Rock Slide!"
Norton jumped and slammed into the ground, causing more boulders to rain onto our side.
Remembering our strategy last time, I commanded, "Throw the rocks back with Blaze Kick!"
The Fire type smiled as he leapt onto the nearest boulder. With careful movement and precision, he kicked medium-sized stones at Norton. The fire from his right foot ignited the rocks and transformed them into meteors crashing into the earth.
Roxanne forced a smile. "As expected from a top Rustboro City Trainer School graduate. Norton, Protect!"
The Compass Pokémon shielded himself from the first few meteors, causing them to harmlessly pass through the barrier.
Undaunted, I encouraged, "Don't give in, Blaze! Keep going!"
Blaze's fists ignited with a stronger passion, and he was then able to hurl larger rocks at Norton's shield. The Rock type struggled to maintain his defense, but the barrier eventually disappeared. The fiery rocks pelted Norton, and his wobbling became shorter. Roxanne clenched her left fist, something I hadn't seen her do in a long time.
I have to keep the momentum going. "Fire Punch!"
Blaze jumped onto the boulders strewn over the battlefield and charged his right fist.
The Gym Leader recomposed herself and yelled, "Double Team then Shock Wave!"
Norton once again hid himself amongst five copies scattered around the field, forcing Blaze to stop and scan for the real one. All of them faced me with blank expressions.
Even when they're farther apart, they're still not facing towards Blaze. But why? Then I came to a realization. That's it! Nosepass always point north, so they can't turn in any other direction! That must be why the Gym's entrance changed, to help Norton and her other Nosepass!
Roxanne chuckled. "I guess you figured out my secret strategy, Summer?"
I grinned. "You can say that."
"Then it looks like I won't hold anything else back. Norton, Shock Wave again!"
The five illusions charged the Electric type move, and the lightning bolts converged on top of Blaze.
"I may not be able to dodge it, but I can redirect it. Blaze, block the Shock Wave with Blaze Kick!"
Shifting his energy into his right foot, Blaze focused on the descending lightning bolt and performed an upward front kick. The flame-boosted Shock Wave struck the ground, creating a small energy field that temporarily revealed the real Norton, located at the center left.
Blaze landed on the field, and I smirked. "Use Flamethrower on the ground!"
He nodded and sprayed the battlefield with flames. Though the attack didn't do much damage to Norton, the heat disoriented him. The Nosepass swooned, giving his Trainer concern.
Roxanne shouted, "Norton, put the flames out with Rock Slide!"
The Rock type summoned another storm of rocks, stamping the flames out. This, however, was just a diversion. Blaze dashed on top of the falling rocks once more, inching closer to his opponent.
Roxanne was shocked. "What a persistent Blaziken. Norton, Shock Wave!"
The Compass Pokémon launched a single blue lightning bolt that zigzagged around the boulders and threw the Blaziken into a boulder. But the Fire type was undeterred; he freed himself and continued his charge.
"Sky Uppercut!"
The punch hit Norton's nose, sending him into the air. The Blaziken returned to our side of the field as the Nosepass slammed face-first onto the broken rocks.
Mr. Jasper studied the fallen Pokémon's movements for a few seconds, then waved his arms. "Norton is unable to battle! Blaze wins; therefore, the winner of this match is Summer Scorcher of Littleroot Town!"
"You were amazing, Blaze!" I praised as the battlefield returned to normal.
He beamed as he walked to me. "Thanks to you, Summer."
After we high-fived each other, I looked at the stands and was surprised to see everyone cheering for me. Suzy and Tomoko looked very proud, Lightning jumped up and down with glee, and Weldon nodded. The stranger sitting next to Weldon crossed his arms and made a soft smile. Tawny, however, was holding back her excitement.
I sighed. Looks like I still haven't made any progress with her...
Roxanne returned her Pokémon. "Good job, Norton." She took a deep breath and approached us with a wide grin. "Congratulations, Summer. I knew you were good, but I didn't expect you to be THIS good! The strategies with all of your Pokémon were calculated yet adaptive, and I didn't expect you to be so destructive!"
I laughed and rubbed the back of my head. "Well, I do have a pretty powerful coach."
She glanced at the stands and chuckled. Then she took out a gold badge from her pocket and presented it to me. The pin was a rectangle split diagonally by a thinner rectangle in the back and a smaller rectangle intersecting it in the front, creating an abstract pattern. "Take this Stone Badge as proof of your victory."
"Thanks, Roxanne." I accepted the new reward and placed it into my Badge case. I looked up and waved to the kids. I shouted, "Thanks for cheering us on!"
The schoolchildren were amazed and shouted, "Great battle, Summer and Ms. Roxanne!"
Roxanne laughed. "All right. Now that that's taken care of, it's time for all of you go back to the school for your next lessons."
Though disappointed, the three groups filed out of the stands. The Gym Leader said, "I'll meet you in the lobby once I bring the kids back to the classroom. I have a favor to ask of you and your friend."
"Oh, sure. We can wait for you."
Mr. Jasper came closer and gave me a thumbs up. "That was a grade 'S' battle, Summer. I'll definitely remember this one."
I bowed. "Thanks, Mr. Jasper. That's means a lot coming from you."
Roxanne turned to her mentor. "Mr. Jasper, are you ready to go?"
He replied, "Of course, substitute teacher Jasper is ready for his grand entrance!"
We all laughed, and I waved them goodbye. I returned Blaze and exited the room. Weldon, Lighting, and the stranger were waiting for me in the lobby.
"That was an amazing battle, Summer!" Lightning squealed as she approached me. "So many attacks and counters...I could barely breathe!"
I petted her head. "I'm glad you enjoyed the battle, Lightning."
Weldon crossed his arms. "That was a good match, Summer. You stuck to the strategies well."
"Thanks, Weldon. I really appreciated your help."
Now that the man was closer, I got a good look at his clothes. His black attire was accented with purple zigzag patterns on the front of his shirt and metal clasps above his elbows. A red ascot reflected his air of sophistication and calmness.
The stranger stroked his chin. "I've never seen a battle style quite like yours, Summer Scorcher." His voice was soft, yet concealed a certain strength behind it.
"Oh, thank you. I'm sorry; I don't know who you are. But you do look familiar. We haven't met before, have we?"
He chuckled. "We haven't personally met, but I'm sure you've seen me before. My name is Steven Stone."
My eyes widened. "Steven Stone?! You're the former Hoenn Champion and one of the top Trainers in the Hoenn Region!"
Weldon was shocked. "Former Champion?!"
I glared at him. "You didn't know, Weldon?!"
"W-Well...I only met him last week. And I only know about the Kanto Champions!"
"Don't worry, you two. I'm not upset." Steven said, calming us down. "After all, It's been a while since I was the Champion. Since losing to Brendon four years ago, I've been focused on helping my father and continuing my rare stone collection." He paused before stating, "Though, I have thought about regaining my title."
I mused over his words. "Is that because Wallace is the Champion now?"
He smirked. "You do catch on quickly. But yes. After all, he's my rival, and I do want to see how much stronger the both of us are now. However, it's just wishful thinking for now."
"I see."
Weldon adjusted his cap. "So, Summer. Are you ready to head back to the Pokémon Center?"
"Actually, Roxanne wanted to ask us something. I told her we can wait for her in the lobby."
"Oh, okay. That's fine with me."
Steven looked at his silver Pokégear. "Oh, I should get going. It's been a pleasure talking with you, Summer. I'm sure we'll see each other in the future."
"Thanks, Steven. It was great meeting you too."
He then turned to my rival. "And Weldon. Think about what we discussed earlier, okay?"
"Y-Yeah. I will."
I cocked my head. That's a weird response. What did they talk about?
Steven waved goodbye, and we returned the gesture. When he left, I turned to Weldon.
"Are you okay, Weldon?"
He forced a grin. "I am. Don't worry about it, Summer."
That just makes me worry more. I looked at Lightning, but she replied, "Sorry, Summer. Steven told me to keep it secret."
"Wait, he talked to you?"
"Yeah. He's got a translator too."
"Huh. I guess that makes sense."
Roxanne burst into the Gym. "Sorry I took so long! It took me a while to quiet everyone down when Mr. Jasper entered the building."
"That's understandable!" I agreed. "He does have a certain kind of presence when he enters the Trainer's School."
After we laughed, I caught Weldon biting his lip out of the corner of my eye. I cleared my throat. "Anyway, what did you want to ask us?"
Roxanne stroked her chin. "Well... I know this is last minute, but will you and Weldon be able to participate in a panel at the school tomorrow morning? It'll only be for two hours, and you'll get a free lunch."
I beamed. "Of course! It's the least I can do for my alma mater."
The Gym Leader clasped her hands. "Great! How about you, Weldon?"
He took a deep breath and crossed his arms. "I...I'm not sure."
Seeing his reluctance, she reassured, "You don't have to answer questions you're not comfortable with, Weldon. The children are very respectful and considerate. I understand if you want to decline."
I urged him with a nudge to the shoulder. "Come on, Weldon. I'm sure it'll be fun."
He looked at my comforting smile and smirked. "Okay. I'll do it."
Roxanne bowed. "Thank you so much! I'll arrange for your visitor passes; just let me know when you're outside and I'll come get you."
"Great, Roxanne. I can't wait."
"Me too. I better get ready for that Nuzlocke Trainer. He'll be coming soon. See you tomorrow!"
I nodded, and we exited the building to enjoy the rest of the day.
The next day...
At around 9:30, Weldon, Lightning and I headed to the Trainer's School. I was especially excited.
"You look chipper, Summer," Lightning commented.
"Of course! I can't wait to visit my old school!"
Weldon asked, "What's special about this school, Summer?"
I stroked my chin. "Well, the Rustboro City Trainer School is one of the four Trainer Schools in the region, and it's the only one to include pathways for Pokémon health careers. It also has pathways for Pokémon Trainers and Coordinators, like the other schools. Kids from Littleroot Town, Oldale Town, Petalburg City, and of course, Rustboro City, go there for their education. They also have celebrity meet-and-greets, electives, field trips, and guest panels."
Lightning nodded. "I see. And that's what you and Weldon are doing, right?"
"That's right. Though I am a little nervous."
She laughed. "You'll be fine, Summer!"
"Thanks, Lightning."
I looked over at Weldon, who was still worried. "Are you okay, Weldon?"
"Huh? Oh yeah, I'm fine. It's just...it sounds like your school experience was better than mine."
I raised an eyebrow. "How so?"
He sighed. "My school was more of a private school for batfams. All we focused on was competitive strategies and development of our respective battling abilities. No electives, no panels, no fun."
"Oh. I'm sorry."
He softly smiled. "I guess that's why I was the competitive jerk back when I first met you. But enough about that. We're going to be late if we don't hurry up."
I looked at my Pokégear and sweated. "Come on then!"
We ran to Learning Way, turned right, and arrived at the school's entrance. After calling Roxanne, she came out in a few seconds.
"Oh good, just in time!" she exclaimed. "I have your visitor passes."
She handed us two gray lanyards with laminated cards that read "Visitor's Pass" in red. After we put them on, she guided us into the lobby. It was just how I remembered it: open with natural sunlight warming the gray floor, trophy cases against the wall, and photos of prestigious graduates, like Mr. Jasper and Roxanne. The Gym Leader led us down a long hallway that terminated at the auditorium.
She opened a door to the right and said, "Most of the panelists are here, and we're waiting on one more. Why don't do you get acquainted?"
Weldon and I nodded, and we entered into a six-person conference room with light wooden chairs and table. There, I recognized a familiar face.
"Professor Birch!"
"Summer!" he jovially greeted. "It's so good to see you and Lightning again!"
He got up and we exchanged hugs.
"I had a feeling you're one of the panelists, Professor."
"Of course! I never miss a chance to visit the Trainer Schools." He then looked over my shoulder and beamed. "And this must be Weldon! It was such a shame I couldn't meet you during the New Trainer Festival."
The pre-teen nodded. "Likewise, Professor. My mom told me a lot about you and your research."
The professor gleefully replied, "Well, she and your dad occasionally helped me when they traveled throughout the Hoenn Region. If you like, I can share some stories about when they were younger when we're both free."
Weldon rubbed his right arm. The slight pang in my heart returned. "Thanks, Professor..."
I looked at the other panelist, who was occupied with an orange palm-sized device with a small foldable screen. He was a light-skinned man in his early fifties with dark blue eyes and tufted white hair. He wore a dark blue suit with thin black vertical stripes, a black tie, and black loafers.
The older gentleman then noticed us and introduced himself. "Hello. I'm Joseph Stone, the President of the Devon Corporation."
I could hardly believe it when he offered his hand. "Mr. Stone, it's such an honor to meet you."
He laughed after we exchanged handshakes. "I would say it's an honor to meet you, Summer Scorcher and Weldon Leland. I followed your journeys toward the regional leagues, and I can say that you two are quite impressive Trainers."
I bowed. "Thank you, Mr. Stone."
Weldon did the same, though with less enthusiasm.
The older man looked at his watch. "I say. Scott's later than usual."
Professor Birch shrugged. "You know him, Joseph. When he's in scouting mode, who knows when he'll arrive."
Suddenly, a stout thirty year old man with light-tanned skin, thick curly red hair, and dark sunglasses entered the room. Unlike the professional attire of his fellow adult panelists, he wore a light blue tropical shirt with a large white flower pattern, white shorts, and white slip-on shoes.
"Wooh...!" he exclaimed with a husky voice. "That scouting session was intense!"
"It sounds like it, my friend," Mr. Stone stated.
The newly arrived panelist surveyed the room. "Ah, Joseph! Birch! Wonderful to see you two again." He then noticed me and Weldon. After lowering his sunglasses, he smirked. "Ah... When I heard that there will be two last-minute panelists, I had a strong feeling it would be you two. Scott Palena, Pokémon scout extraordinaire, at your service."
Weldon and I exchanged handshakes with the enthusiastic man.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Scott," I said.
"Why thank you, Summer. Actually, I'm excited to meet you and Weldon earlier than expected."
Weldon raised an eyebrow. "Oh, how come?"
"I've been scouting top Trainers to compete in my high-tier, multi-location challenge coming next year to the Kanto Region. Everything's arranged, the locations, the leaders...all that's missing are the Trainers."
"That sounds intriguing," I mused.
Scott laughed, "I'm glad you think so." Weldon glanced towards the ground, catching the scout's eye. "Oh, something wrong, Weldon?"
"Y-You really think I'm a top Trainer?"
"Of course! I know that you're on hiatus, but you're still a top contender even after the Silver League. Heck, you got the closest to beating former Champion Red."
His face brightened. "Thanks, Scott."
Roxanne then entered the room. "All right, panelists. Everyone's waiting for you."
Professor Birch beamed. "Then we shouldn't keep them waiting."
"I concur," Mr. Stone said with a nod.
Weldon and I followed the men, eager to share our knowledge with the future Trainers, Coordinators, and Pokémon doctors.
A few hours later...
After a quick autograph session for the schoolchildren, Weldon and I sat at a long wooden table in the school cafeteria. The warm tiles, wonderful smells, and lively children still clung to my school memories. I eagerly dug into my spaghetti as Weldon munched on his sandwich. Lightning sat next to me, eating some Pokémon food specially made for Electric types.
My taste buds tingled with nostalgia. "Mm! Just like how I remember!"
Weldon laughed. "Was that how you began your love for pasta?"
"Well, one of the reasons. How's the sandwich?"
He nodded. "It's delicious. The vegetables, the cheese, even the hard-boiled Chansey egg are all delicious."
"That's good to hear!" Roxanne said, walking towards us. "We take pride in growing the vegetables on property and buying local produce and baked goods." She sat next to Weldon and told me, "Thanks again for coming on short notice. The kids really enjoyed the panel session."
"I'm glad! It was actually really fun."
"I agree," my rival added. "Your students are so polite and interested."
She chuckled. "Thank you for those kind words, Weldon." She then said, "Actually, I came to tell you that Professor Birch and Mr. Stone wanted to see the both of you before you leave the school. They'll be waiting in the conference room."
I was surprised, yet interested. "Oh, okay. Thanks, Roxanne."
"No problem. Though it's a shame we couldn't hang out before you leave."
"That's all right. I'll let you know when we return to Rustboro City."
"Great." We got up and exchanged hugs. "Good luck, Summer. Oh, and when you reach Dewford Town, tell Brawly, the Gym Leader, I said hi."
"I will. Bye, Roxanne."
She waved to us before returning to her education duties.
"I wonder what they want," Weldon pondered aloud.
"Well, we won't find out until we finish lunch."
We consumed the rest of our meals, then headed back to the conference room. When we entered, the two men were looking at two small devices lying on the table.
Once the door closed, Professor Birch looked up. "Ah, there you two are. Good thing Roxanne found you before you left."
I smiled. "What did you want to talk to us about, Professor?"
"Ah, these!" He picked up the devices, which I instantly recognized as white earpieces.
"New translators?"
Mr. Stone nodded. "You see, the Devon Corporation is working with the regional professors around the world to create a complete Pokémon translation database so that everyone can better understand them. The name is still being worked out, but we are going with 'Pokétalk' for now. Instead of relying on a physical database, like the Pokédex, for the translations, we will use an electronic database stored at each regional professor's lab. These databases will then transmit the translations to the earpieces within the respective regions. Of course, the Pokédex can still be used as a backup translation database or when the person is traveling in between regions. When that's the case, the Pokédex entries will be updated when you register for the region's league."
I had a big grin on my face. "Wow, that's some amazing technology!"
The CEO chuckled. "It is, but it's still a work in progress. Right now, the Hoenn database only has translations for Pokémon from Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh. We also haven't tested them in the field yet."
"But that's where you and Weldon come in, Summer," Professor Birch continued. "We would like the two of you to test them. One with experience using a translator, and one without."
I stroked my chin. "Do we need to give weekly reports or something?"
"Oh no," Mr. Stone answered. "The earpiece will automatically submit any bugs or glitches weekly. Professor Birch and my team will then recalibrate the database based on the reports. We'll inform you if we need someone to personally service the earpiece."
"That sounds reasonable. I'll do it."
"Thank you, Summer. How about you, Weldon?"
He hesitated. "So...by using this, I can actually understand Pokémon language?"
"That's right," the professor replied. "It'll be a big adjustment, but I guarantee it's a worthwhile one."
Weldon still wasn't sure, and I frowned. Come on, Weldon. This was you discussed with me before; I know you want to understand them.
He took a deep breath and firmly nodded. "I'll do it."
Mr. Stone grinned. "Excellent. These earpieces are weatherproof, easy to clean, and germ-resistant, perfect for a Trainer on the go. Please don't hesitate to let us know if anything else happens to them."
Professor Birch took out his Pokégear. "I have Summer's number, so I just need yours, Weldon."
The boy exchanged numbers, and we received our new earpieces.
I put the old one into my bag and inserted the new one into my right ear. I looked at my Raichu. "So, what do you think, Lightning?"
She rubbed her chin. "Very stylish."
Weldon stumbled back. "Wh-Whoa. That's what you sound like, Lightning?"
She cocked her head. "Yeah, why?"
"I-I never knew your cry was so similar to your real voice."
I laughed. "Just wait till you hear Errol." I turned to the men and bowed. "Thank you for letting us to test the earpieces."
"Thank you for being such willing participants," Mr. Stone replied. "I know these devices will really assist you on your journeys."
Weldon mimicked my gesture. "We'll do our best. Come on, Summer. Let's get some training in before we leave tomorrow."
"Sounds good. Good bye, Professor Birch and Mr. Stone."
"Good bye," they chimed.
After exchanging waves, we exited the Trainer School, eager to experience what these new earpieces can do.
