With Summer's training and Gym battle completed, the two left Dewford Island. However, instead of the direct route to Slateport City, the pair made a detour to the Sea Mauville Research Station. As they learned about the shipwrecks found in that location, Summer encountered the spirit of a captain and his descendant. Not only was she able to help the descendant with finding his ancestor's heirloom, Aurora was also able to learn Signal Beam. After making it to their original destination, Summer hears of an event where she could finally see her childhood friend, Clara. But will she be able to learn why Clara is avoiding her or will something else get in her way?
Chapter 17- Artist's Block
After our eventful day at the Sea Mauville Research Station, we finally arrived in Slateport City, the southern port of the mainland. The sights of the market and the smell of the sea reminded me of when I first returned to Hoenn three months ago. I let Lightning out, who was excited to finally be out of her ball.
"Yay, Slateport City!" she screamed. "Can we get more of those cookies from that stall?"
Laughing, I replied, "Sure." I turned to Weldon. "Hey, Weldon. Do you wanna go to the marketplace with us?"
He didn't respond at first as he was in awe of the seaport. "S-Sure. Sorry, it's just that...I've never seen a city like this before."
We headed towards the market, and I continued my explanation. "Yeah, it's really nice. My uncle usually sells his produce here since Lilycove City's too far away. Plus, there's also the Oceanic Museum, the Art Museum, a shipyard, and a Gym."
"Wait, there's a Gym here?! How come this the first time I've heard of it?!"
I stroked my chin. "Well, it's still pretty new, about four years old or so? I haven't been near it myself, so I don't know who the Gym Leader is or what type they specialize in. Not that I think about it, there's also a new Gym in Lilycove City."
"And you don't know who's the Gym Leader there either?"
"No, but I heard rumors that it's a teenager who used to be sickly when he was younger."
"Interesting. I mean, I know there are other Gym Leaders besides the main eight ones around each region, but I never expected more than eight to be so prominent here."
"Well, the region's not as strict as Kanto or Johto in terms of maintaining eight official Gyms. Plus, since the Hoenn is greatly separated by land and sea, having Gyms at the port cities make it easier to finish the Gym challenges."
"Do you want to challenge those Gyms?"
I crossed my arms. "I haven't thought about that too much. Maybe I can challenge the Gyms after getting eight badges to prepare myself for the Hoenn League."
"That's a pretty good idea. I'd like to meet those Gym Leaders myself."
After getting Lightning's cookies, we headed to the Pokémon Center, a three-story building located at the center of the downtown area. It was much larger than the other Pokémon Centers we've been to and had magnificent views of the nearby ocean and museum.
We approached the reception desk, where a young female nurse with medium wavy black hair was working on the computer. She had gray-blue eyes, olive skin, and a slightly fit physique. On her nurse cap was a silver pin designed to be a Wailord, a Pokémon known for its immense size.
She greeted us with the signature smile and said in a bubbly voice, "Welcome to the Slateport City Pokémon Center. I'm Nurse Kaina."
I nodded. "It's nice to meet you, Nurse Kaina. I'm Summer, and this is Weldon."
"Oh yes! I've seen you both on the news. It's nice to finally meet you in person." After we gave her our Poké Balls, she asked, "Are you looking for a room?"
"Yeah," Weldon replied.
"Let me see… There is a room on the third floor. Is that fine?"
"Fine with me. How about you, Summer?"
"I'm good with the third floor."
"Excellent. Let me heal your Pokémon and get your room keys ready. It'll take about fifteen minutes, so please go ahead and wait by the TV area."
"Great, thanks, Nurse Kaina," I said.
She bowed, and we headed towards a nearby couch. The television was showing the female anchor from the "Hoenn News Network".
{Now to our international news. In the Kanto Region, the tournament deciding the interim Champion has concluded with Blue Oak, currently the Viridian City Gym Leader, defeating Agatha, a Kanto Elite Four member in a close full team battle. As of today, Blue Oak will fulfill both the Champion and Gym Leader duties. This is expected to end with the conclusion of the current run of the Indigo League, where any of the three regional winners from the Junior, Senior, and Master Division may challenge him to become the new Champion. If no one can defeat him or if no one challenges him, Blue Oak will become the official Kanto Champion. We will provide more updates as the 2006 Indigo League approaches.}
As she continued going through the international news, I sat back in my seat. Blue Oak...that name sounds familiar...
"So, that's the guy I saw before…" Weldon muttered.
"What?"
"Oh, sorry! When I last met with Red, I brushed past him when I left."
"Huh. Now that I think about it, that time I heard about him was when he became a Gym Leader. What do you know about Blue, Weldon?"
He sat forward. "Let's see… He's well known as Professor Oak's grandson, but he's also Red's main rival. The two participated in the Indigo League at the same time almost ten years ago, and Red defeated him in the tournament finals. Blue disappeared after that and only returned to Kanto when he was selected to audition for the Viridian City Gym Leader position."
"So he's pretty strong then?"
"Oh, yeah. Even I would struggle against him. After all, he's a Mega Evolution user."
"Really? How did he become one?"
"Well, from what Mom told me, Mega Evolution has a firm foundation in the Kalos Region and has a slight foothold in the Hoenn Region. So he must've been to Kalos before; that's where Mom got her Key Stone and corresponding Mega Stones."
"I see."
"Sorry to interrupt," Nurse Kaina said as she came over. "I have your Poké Balls and room keys. You'll be staying in Room 313."
We got up and accepted our items.
"Thanks, Nurse Kaina," we replied.
She bowed and returned to her duties, allowing us to enter our clean room with a hint of ocean breeze. Weldon left to take a shower as I looked out the window. Lightning pawed my bed and was about to settle in for a nap when my Pokégear rang.
I saw it was a group call with Suzy and Tomoko and immediately picked up. "Hi, girls."
Suzy greeted me first. {Hi, Summer! How's your journey going?}
"It's good. We just got to Slateport City."
{Oh, perfect timing! I was wondering when you were going to arrive there.}
"Why, what's up?"
Tomoko replied, {Well, remember when we saw the advertisement for that art exhibit back in Rustboro City?}
"Yeah."
{It turns out there's an opening art gala tonight as part of that exhibit at the Slateport City Art Museum. So she'll definitely be there.}
My heart skipped. "Really? How much are the tickets?"
{Unfortunately, they're sold out.}
"Oh…"
{But…} Suzy said slyly. {I got four free tickets to the opening, so we can all go!}
{Oh, yay!} Tomoko chimed. {I could really use a break from the Mauville City General Hospital.}
"H-How did you get them?"
{Long story short, we're doing our weekend field trip in Slateport City right now. Since four of us teachers will have free time tonight, the Slateport City Art Museum offered us those tickets to see if we were interested in having a future art field trip there. Luckily, no one else wanted to go, so score for us!}
"That's great! Thanks so much, Suzy!"
{No problem, Summer.}
"But wait, you said you have four tickets. Who's the fourth person?"
{Duh, your friend, of course!}
Tomoko gasped. {Are we going to finally meet him?}
"W-Well… I can ask, but he may not want to go… I don't think he's into that kind of stuff… Plus, this is most likely a formal event, and I don't think he has those clothes on him."
{Well, it won't hurt to ask!} Suzy pointed out. {Besides, didn't you say he's doing that vacation checklist thing?}
"Yeah…"
{Then it's a perfect thing to do! After all, when else would you be able to go to an art gala?}
{When you think about it that way, Suzy, you do have a point.}
I chuckled. "All right. I'll ask. What time's the event?"
{There's going to be refreshments around 6:30 before they start at 7. So, let's meet at 6:20 in front of the museum?}
{Sounds good to me, Suzy.}
"Me too. Thanks again, Suzy, and I'll see you both there."
{No problem, Summer! I can't wait to see you all again!}
{Me too! Bye, Summer!}
"Bye."
After I hung up, I heard the door open.
"Were those your friends, Summer?" Weldon asked.
I nodded. "They told me I can try to see Clara at an art gala tonight."
"Oh, are you going?"
"Yeah. And…"
He cocked his head. "And?"
"Well…" I tightened my ponytail. "They want to meet you too."
He rubbed the back of his head. "Um…"
At least he didn't say no outright. "You don't have to go if you don't want to, Weldon."
"No! I mean, I don't mind going. It's just that, isn't it a formal event? I don't have the right clothes."
The phone in our room rang. He picked it up and talked to someone briefly. After he hung up, he said, "My mom's calling on the videophone downstairs."
"Oh, I wonder what she wants."
"Beats me. She called me out of the blue several times when I traveled."
"Okay. Well, I should get ready for tonight. Tell her I said hi."
He smiled. "I will."
I let Lightning have her nap in peace as I showered. Could this finally be the night I see Clara?
A few hours later…
I waited in the lobby, staring at the clock. "It's been almost two hours, and I need to meet up with them in ten minutes…" I complained trying to not ruin my dress as I slid on the couch. "Where is he?"
Lightning scratched her head. "Did you try calling him?"
"Yeah, but he didn't pick up. I wonder if he got caught up with something."
The doors opened and gasped. It was Weldon, wearing a dark green shirt, black slacks, and black silk jacket. His hair, no longer hiding underneath his hat, was slicked back, and his tennis shoes were replaced with dark brown loafers.
He groaned. "I can't believe she did all of this…"
"Weldon?" I asked.
He jumped back, almost dropping a paper bag in his left hand. "S-Summer! Sorry I kept you waiting for so long! My mom actually showed up in person, and when I told her what happened, she shuttled me around the boutique shops and got me all of this..."
"Oh. I guess that explains why a delivery guy came to our room earlier to give me hair gel, shoe polish, and a silver tie."
He smacked his face. "A tie too? I know she has to dress formally for her job, but this is way too much for me..."
I laughed. "No, I think it's just right. Besides, you look...really nice in that outfit."
He blushed. "Th-Thanks, Summer. I guess it's good I have this just in case too. Kind of like your dress." He cleared his throat. "Anyway, I need to put my clothes in the room and then, we should be ready to go."
I nodded, and he went upstairs. After a few minutes, he came back and opened the door for me. We then walked northwest towards the arts district. Shops tailored to artists, photographers, and Coordinators lined this street, and at the end were the Slateport City Contest hall and the Art Museum.
When we arrived at the large water fountain in front of the Greek-style structure accented with wave and cloud motifs created by local artisans, a small crowd of guests were waiting outside. Suzy and Tomoko ran over, and we exchanged hugs.
"Hi girls!" I greeted.
"Hi, Summer and Lightning!" Suzy enthusiastically replied. "It's so good to see you two!"
"Likewise," Tomoko added before turning her attention to my partner. "Oh, you must be Weldon. It's nice to finally meet you."
"Yeah, Summer told us so much about you," Suzy said.
He gave my friends a big smile. "And she told me so much about you two as well. Thanks for inviting me."
"Of course!" Suzy handed each of us a silver ticket. "I hope you enjoy the museum. Oh, they don't allow Pokémon inside. Sorry, Lightning."
"Eh, that's okay. I need to catch up on sleep anyways."
I chuckled as I returned her, and we joined the line. After ten minutes, we showed our tickets to the receptionist. Once we received booklets about the art and wristbands to show we were visitors, we went into the main lobby, a large room that had doors and several staircases leading to the various exhibits. At the back of the room was a small stage lined with white linen. After getting some apple cider and a small plate consisting of various cheeses, fruits, and chocolates, we moved to a table located at a quiet part of the room to formulate our plan.
"So," I whispered. "How should we find Clara?"
Suzy looked at the pamphlet. "Well, it says that the opening speeches, including the introductions by the artists, will take around fifteen minutes. Then, we're free to explore the rooms on the first floor, where the artists will walk around to their pieces and answer any questions."
Tomoko pointed to four spots on the map portion. "These are Clara's art pieces, but they're so spread out. Who knows which ones she'll be at and at what time?"
I stroked my chin. "We should split up then to cover more ground. Plus, it'll make Clara less suspicious of us."
"Good idea," Suzy replied. "Weldon, you can go with Summer since you're not as familiar with the museum."
"That sounds good to me. I also don't know what she looks like either."
Suzy flipped her booklet to the last section, which showed the artists participating in the exhibit. When I saw the familiar blue eyes and long brown hair, my heart skipped. Just like the advertisement in Rustboro City, Clara looked so elegant and refined.
Weldon put a hand on my shoulder. "We'll find her, Summer. And then you'll know the truth."
"Thanks, Weldon."
He then took our empty plates and glasses to dispose of them, leaving alone for a few minutes.
With a chuckle, Suzy whispered, "So that's the famous Weldon Leland. I've seen his picture before, but he looks so much better in person!"
I blushed. "I-I think it's because of his new clothes."
The girls glanced at each other with sly smiles.
Just when Weldon returned to our table, a light clinking on glass got our attention. A short mustached man wearing a brown suit and red tie placed his glass on a small table and adjusted his glasses.
"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to our 23rd Annual Opening Gala for Young Artists. For those who are new here, I am Mr. Gafu, the curator of the Slateport Art Museum and a proud supporter of the Hoenn art scene. As a former artist myself, I am always happy to help new artists fulfill their potential, and I hope you enjoy the work of all of our artists tonight. Now, each of these talented artists will come onto the stage and give a quick introduction. First up…"
I fidgeted. Should I get closer?
Tomoko noticed my hesitation. "Summer, I know you want to see Clara up close, but if she recognizes you, she'll avoid you all night."
I sighed. "You're right, and she'll recognize you and Suzy."
"I can do it," Weldon volunteered.
"But she might recognize you too, Weldon."
He smirked. "Don't worry, I know how to hide in a crowd." He then walked into the group at the stage and disappeared amongst them.
"Wow, he is good," Suzy noted. She then turned to me. "He really likes you, doesn't he, Summer?"
"Um...well..."
Tomoko gasped. "Do you like him as well? The last time you stuttered like that was when you told us you had a crush on that upperclassman back in Trainer School."
I weakly smiled. "Was I really that obvious?"
The two nodded.
"Then how come you haven't told him how you felt, Summer?" Suzy pondered.
I brushed my hair back. "Weldon's still going through some things right now. I'm just building my relationship with him as a friend first. I don't want to make things weird for him, or me for that matter."
"That is true. The sign of a strong romantic relationship is a foundation in a strong friendship."
"Since when did you get so philosophical, Suzy?" I asked with a giggle.
Tomoko grinned. "She's been reading a lot of romance manga lately."
"Yeah, and I learned that going too fast can cause way too much drama for everyone. So go at your own pace, Summer. I'm sure he's doing the same."
"Thanks, guys."
We were interrupted by a loud applause, signaling the start of the free roaming period. As the crowd split between the two wings, Weldon walked over.
"How did it go?" I asked.
"I kind of saw her from behind some people's heads, but I was able to hear her mention she was going to the east wing first, then the west wing."
"Okay. Suzy, Tomoko, is it okay if you head to the east wing?"
The nurse replied, "Sure, but why?"
"I just… I need to make sure I know what to say."
"I understand. Take all of the time you need in the west wing."
"I'm sure Weldon will be able to help you come up with the words," the teacher added with a wink.
I glanced away, blushing.
Suzy giggled. "Come on, Tomoko. Let's look at the art."
"Sure thing. See you two later."
We waved goodbye.
I then gave a deep sigh. "I'm sorry if they're bothering you, Weldon."
To my surprise, he was also looking away. He returned his attention to me and brushed his hair back. "No, they aren't. They're actually really supportive. I wish I had friends like that at school."
I smiled. "But you have friends that support you now, don't you?"
He glanced at the table, chuckling. "I guess I do."
Invigorated by his words, I led him into the west wing, where several groups of patrons admired the various paintings and sculptures amongst marble white walls. As we walked past, I couldn't help but feel the emotions coming from the works of art. Happiness, loneliness, confusion…
I stroked my chin. I've never experienced this with art before. Could it be because of my powers? I should double check. "Hey, Weldon. Do you feel anything when you see this art?"
He looked at a sculpture of a woman gazing into the eyes of a Cleffa. "Not really. It's a little too up to interpretation for my taste. Why, do you?"
I walked around it and replied, "There's a really strong bond between this woman and the Cleffa. I think it's now a Clefable, so I have a feeling the sculptor wanted to portray the feelings when she first met it."
Weldon's eyes widened as he read the accompanying placard. "Y-You're right… How did you know?"
"I had a hunch," I replied, rubbing my necklace.
"Oh ho! You have such a keen sense of art!" Mr. Gafu approached us with a big smile. "I have never seen someone interpret a work so precisely."
I sheepishly grinned. "Th-Thank you, Mr. Gafu. That's very nice of you to say."
After shaking hands with the curator, he asked, "How are you enjoying the exhibits?"
I clasped my hands. "I'm enjoying all of them so far. The artists are very talented."
"Thank you. They've all worked so hard. Do you have a favorite in particular?"
I stroked my chin, trying to mask my intentions. "Well, I'm actually looking forward to seeing the work from one artist. I believe her name is Clara Wen?"
Mr. Gafu's face brightened. "Ah, my brightest artist! She has made such wonderful paintings. Would you like me to show you the best one in this wing?"
I beamed. "That would be great, thank you!"
As he led the way, I noticed Weldon was staring at one painting in particular. It was a blur of gray, brown, and light blue merging into a humanoid shape. Outside of the shape were brushstrokes representing glaciers, mountains, and volcanoes. It reflected a union between nature and humans, but I couldn't help but feel there was something more to it.
I motioned to the curator. "Sorry, Mr. Gafu, can you wait a bit? My friend wanted to take a closer look at this painting."
"Of course." He came back and peered over my rival's shoulder. "Ah yes, The Fusion of Elements. Quite a fascinating piece, wouldn't you say?"
Weldon curiously looked at him. "Yeah. Can you tell me more about the inspiration behind this?"
"Let me see… Ah, yes! This is based on the legends of the guardians who protect the Hoenn Region around 3,000 years ago."
My ears perked up. "Guardians?"
"Yes, the ones who helped protect the ancient people from the battle between the masters of land and sea, Groudon and Kyogre."
That sounds familiar. I know I remember reading them in the scrolls from the Ecruteak City Kimono Girls, but I can't put my finger on it…
Mr. Gafu then looked at his watch. "Oh my, I must attend to the patrons in the east wing. I apologize for not bringing you to Clara's painting myself."
I gave him a reassuring smile. "That's all right, Mr. Gafu. Can you tell us where it is?"
"Oh yes. It's just further down this path. It's called The Entangled Rose."
"That sounds intriguing. Well, thank you again for spending time with us."
"The pleasure is all mine. I hope you continue to have a wonderful time here."
We bowed to each other, and then the curator walked towards the lobby.
The Entangled Rose? I wonder what that painting's about?
I turned to Weldon, who was still entranced by The Fusion of Elements. I tapped his left shoulder, and he returned to reality.
"Huh? Oh, sorry, Summer."
"That's okay, Weldon." After motioning him to follow me, something sparkled around his wrists. "Hey, aren't those the cufflinks I gave you?"
He lifted his left arm up to investigate. "Yeah, for some reason, I just had to wear them when I got back to the room. And when I stared at that painting… I felt something, almost spiritual, when I looked at it."
I stroked my chin. "Hm… I wonder if they have something to do with that legend. I can ask Teeni about it."
"That girl who used to be obsessed with gaining your role? What about her?"
"Oh yeah. You weren't there when it happened. She gave up becoming the Legend Guardian and became the Johto Lorekeeper, the person in charge of the region's myths and legends."
"But wouldn't she only know about the ones for that region?"
"Well yeah. But maybe she knows who the Hoenn Lorekeeper is."
"Huh. Good idea, Summer."
We reached the end of the room, and I felt strong negative emotions coming from somewhere.
Sensing my anxiety, Weldon grasped my hand. "Are you okay, Summer?"
"Y-Yeah… I just...I just felt anger and despair."
He looked at a painting on the wall and sadly said, "I think I know why."
I looked in his direction and gasped. It was a painting of a rose on a blue background. But the flower was formed from swirls of red, black, and gray while the stem and leaves were created by stabs of green and black acrylic paint.
"I-Is this what Clara's feeling?" I stuttered. "I-I don't understand…"
Weldon stroked his chin. "That's interesting… I sense those emotions too, but not to the extremes that you're feeling."
Not to the extremes? Wait...this was just like how I felt when Weldon pushed me away after the Silver League. My powers have never lied to me…
After I recovered, I said, "I really need to talk to Clara. I need to know why she's feeling this way."
My Pokégear vibrated. When I checked it, Suzy sent me a text that read, "Clara's going over to the west wing!"
I replied with a thanks, and informed Weldon.
He bit his lip. "I can leave the area if you want, Summer."
I sighed. "Can you be nearby? I'm not sure how it'll go."
He nodded and walked to another part of the room.
As anticipation and fear swirled around me, I tried to remain calm. Then I noticed a girl with long brown hair enter into the wing. I instantly recognized her.
Clara!
I tried to make my way towards her, but another girl from my past blocked my path.
Tawny, who wore a light green dress, forced a smile. "Oh, Summer! Wh-What a coincidence! I didn't expect you to have an interest in the arts."
"H-Hi, Tawny… I didn't expect to see you here either." I attempted to look over her shoulder, but she kept obstructing my view.
"I-Is something wrong, Summer?"
"I can ask you the same thing, Tawny."
We both stopped, and I felt her uneasiness.
"Summer… I know why you're here. You want to see Clara, right?"
"Yeah… I know she told you to not see me back in Rustboro City."
Tawny fidgeted. "So Suzy was listening to our conversation…"
"Tawny, why doesn't Clara want to see me? Did I...do something wrong?"
She sighed, then weakly smiled. "No, Summer… It's just that-"
{Ladies and gentlemen. The museum will be closing in fifteen minutes. We hope you enjoyed tonight's event and look forward to seeing you again.}
I turned back to Tawny, only to see her walk briskly towards the exit. Luckily, I was able to catch up with her outside.
"Tawny, wait!" I grabbed her shoulder, only to be pushed back by a powerful state of anger.
"Clara, I don't understand why you don't want to go. I thought you'd be happy to see Summer again."
"Why would I want to see her?! She betrayed me, and now she deserves the same!"
I winced at Clara's rage. "I-I betrayed her…? But…what did I do…?"
"Summer!"
The girls ran over to me, worried. Suzy saw tears trickling down my face and motioned me to sit by the fountain. Once I did, Tomoko handed me some tissues.
"Thanks…" I said as I wiped my eyes.
"Everything okay, Summer?" the teacher asked.
I touched the rippling water. "I-I don't know… I thought I'd get answers, but all I got were more questions…"
"What happened, if you don't mind me asking?"
I took a deep breath and explained, "I thought I saw Clara, but Tawny intercepted me. I have a feeling Clara used her to avoid me. Remember I told you that I can feel emotions and see into the past? Clara said… She said I betrayed her..."
Tomoko shook her head. "This doesn't sound like the Clara we knew back in Trainer School. I'm sorry, Summer."
"No, it's not your fault. I still feel bad about dragging the both of you into this."
Suzy chuckled. "Like we said back in Rustboro, we want to help you, Summer. We'll figure out the reason together."
I choked back tears. "Thanks, girls."
After we hugged, Suzy looked at her Pokégear. "I still have some time before I have to head back to the kids. Why don't we get some hot chocolate at the Swiftney's here?"
"I'm in," Tomoko chimed. "How about you, Summer?"
I grinned. "All right, but where's Weldon?"
Just after I said that, he exited the building, rubbing the back of his head.
"Hey, Weldon. Sorry for running out like that."
"You don't have to apologize, Summer. I didn't expect things to turn out like that either."
"In that case, we're going to Swiftney's for hot chocolate. Wanna come? I'll pay for everyone."
He crossed his arms and smirked. "Well, if you're buying."
We laughed and finished the night with piping cups of chocolate liquid.
