As Summer prepared for her next Gym battle, she decided to focus more on Lightning and Olive. However, the Raichu struggled to learn a new move, and the Treecko was still unsure about participating. One chance encounter with Ty, Summer's friend from the Orange Islands, allowed both Summer and Weldon to learn new training strategies. Thanks to her old friend, Lightning was beginning to understand the move Grass Knot, and Olive felt more confident about dealing with electricity. The pair of Trainers finally make it into the technologically advanced Mauville City. But when someone from Weldon's past gets a little too close to him, Summer experiences something unexpected. Who is this person, and how will Summer survive this encounter?
Chapter 21- A Scent of Jealousy
After a week of training, Weldon and I made it to the largest city in the region, Mauville City. The large streets were busier compared to Rustboro's, and there were more business and technology workers around. The smaller buildings around the southern entrance were overshadowed by the tall skyscrapers and apartment buildings behind them, though they stood out with their red curved roofs and solid white walls.
"Wow…" Weldon muttered. "I'm getting Saffron City vibes here."
I laughed. "Yeah, it kinda like that, isn't it? It's definitely a vibrant city here, literally and figuratively."
"How so?"
I pointed to a tall yellow building decorated with lightning bolts located at the northwest end of the city limits. "That's the Gym over there. At night, the bolts light up and the top flashes like a beacon."
"I can't wait to see that. Hopefully, it'll look better than that neon sign at the Trendy Town Hostel."
We walked north towards the downtown city center and saw a three-story Pokémon Center with a rounded roof. It was definitely the largest one we've seen so far; the lobby had two television areas, a small library, and an elevator. When we got to the reception desk, a female and male nurse greeted us with beaming smiles. The fair-skinned woman had long blonde hair with long violet streaks, bright green eyes, and a gold Plusle pin in her cap. The man, on the other hand, had darker skin, black curly hair, deep blue eyes, and a silver Minun pin on the right side of his cap.
"Welcome to Mauville City," the woman said, her voice as vibrant as her hair. "I'm Nurse Kinse, the head nurse."
"And I'm Nurse Kintsu, the second-in-command," the man added. His voice was deep yet had a hint of empathy.
"It's nice to meet you both," I replied. "I'm-"
"Oh, wait. Let me guess." Nurse Kinse examined us for a bit, then answered, "You must be Summer Scorcher, and you must be Weldon Leland."
"How did you know?"
She winked. "Nurse's intuition."
"More like she follows the competitive battling scene," Nurse Kintsu remarked with a smirk.
"Kintsu..." Then she returned to her usual demeanor. "So, will it be two singles or one double?"
I looked at my rival and said at the same time, "Double."
"All righty. There's one on the third floor, Room 322. You can either take the stairs or the elevator to get there."
Instead of brass keys, Nurse Kintsu handed us white keycards with "322" written on them.
"I haven't seen a Pokémon Center use keycards before," Weldon noted.
"Oh, it's a new thing this Pokémon Center is implementing, thanks to Wattson."
"The Gym Leader?"
"That's right. He's been updating different parts of the city to be more modern. It's a long-term goal of his."
Suddenly, squeals interrupted the calm atmosphere. I turned around and saw a small group of girls surrounding a tall fair skinned teenager with red hair and brown sunglasses. Her flirty red dress with black ribbons matched her gold dangling hoop earrings and gold high heels.
"I can't believe Viola Voss is actually staying here!" a fan screamed.
"We love you, Viola!" another shouted.
The minor celebrity smiled and signed autographs, but I could tell those actions weren't really genuine. A strong, cloying scent of violet, sweet pea, and petunia hit my nose, causing me to wince.
Suddenly, Weldon hid behind me.
Startled, I asked, "Wh-What are you doing, Weldon?"
"Oh my Arceus. What is SHE doing here?"
"Wait, you know her?"
He groaned. "It's a long story; I'll explain later."
"O-Okay… Thanks, Nurse Kinse and Nurse Kintsu..."
The pair showed their best smiles. "Of course," the head nurse responded. "Enjoy your time in Mauville City, and let us know if you would like a coupon book."
I nodded, and we quickly entered the elevator. Once we got into our room, I sighed.
"All right, Weldon. What's the deal with you and Viola?"
He plopped on the left bed and replied, "Viola Voss...was my crush back at my boarding school."
"Y-Your crush?"
My heart sank as he continued with a nostalgic smile, "Yeah, she was the prettiest and smartest girl when I was there. Her family's battling ability was all about statistics. She could calculate the power, speed, and accuracy of attacks of her opponent so she could find ways to outmaneuver them. Because of that, she became known as the 'Violet Vixen'."
"I...I see…" How come this is my first time hearing about her? He's never mentioned anyone specific at his school before. And…she really does look pretty…
There was a knock on the door. I opened it and saw a beaming Viola.
"Hi there!" she said in a cheery tone. "I was told Weldon Leland was staying in his room. Is that true?"
Trying to hide my distaste for her perfume, I uttered, "Um…"
She smirked. "So my suspicions are correct. Can I see him, please?"
"Why?"
Viola became slightly hostile. "What are you, his secretary or something?"
I held my anger. Secretary?!
Weldon walked over, and Viola gave a small wave. "Weldon! It's been so long! How're you doing?"
His cheeks flushed crimson. "I-I'm fine, Viola. You wanted to see me?"
"Of course. Do you have some free time? I'd love to catch up with you. It's been a while since I talked to another battfam."
He stuttered, "S-Sure, I'd love to."
Beaming, she replied, "Great! I know an awesome coffee shop. Meet me downstairs in a few."
After he nodded, she giggled and left.
He pumped his fists into the air. "I can't believe it! Viola Voss actually wants to hang out with me!"
I rubbed the back of my head. "That's nice and all, Weldon, but-"
"I better freshen up before heading out. See you later, Summer!" Weldon dashed out of the room, leaving me in shock.
I bit my lip. He-He's never done that before...
Lightning crossed her arms. "That was rude."
"I guess he's just happy she's finally talking to him." Shaking my head, I grabbed my bag. "Come on, let's do some research."
A few hours later…
I laid on a couch in the waiting area, staring at the ceiling. What's taking him so long? It can't take three hours just for a cup of coffee… At least I healed my Pokémon and got the coupon book.
Lightning nudged me. "It's starting to get crowded. Should we head back to the room, Summer?"
"I guess so…"
I sat up and noticed Weldon and Viola enter the building. I was about to greet them when she whispered in his left ear and slipped him something. Then, she gave him a flirty wave goodbye and headed to the elevator.
That was...weird…
The Kantonian then saw me and rushed over. "I'm so sorry, Summer! We hung out for so long, I lost track of the time."
I forced a smile. "No, that's all right. I wasn't waiting here long."
"Yeah right," Lightning muttered before I gave her a side eye.
"So, what happened?"
Weldon said, with a sparkle in his eyes, "Well, we arrived at the coffee shop and got two cappuccinos. Then, we talked about the Trainer School days and then…"
He droned on and on, but my heart sank lower and lower when he kept mentioning Viola. What makes her so special? Can't he see how shallow and insensitive she is? Or...is that what he's looking for in a girl?
"Summer, are you okay?"
His words brought me back to reality.
I brushed my hair behind my right ear. "Y-Yeah, I'm fine. Oh, I read about a ramen place at the Mauville Shopping Center that's supposed to be really good. Wanna go there for dinner?"
He paused. "Actually… Viola asked me out on a dinner date…"
I felt my emotions fall to the furthest depths. "O-Oh… C-Congratulations…"
He beamed. "Thanks, Summer. I'm going to head upstairs and get ready. We'll have dinner another time, okay?"
"S-Sure…"
He ran towards the elevator, and I couldn't handle the joy and excitement exploding out of his heart. Lightning noticed me covering my mouth with my fingers and motioned me to sit back down.
She jumped onto my lap. "Are you okay, Summer?"
"Y-Yeah, I'm fine…"
She stared at me with her black eyes. "You don't look fine. Is it because of Viola?"
I exhaled softly. "You know me too well. I-I just don't trust her. And I don't know why Weldon's so interested in her."
Lightning curled up and allowed me to pet her. "Yeah, I don't like her either. Are you going to tell Weldon?"
"I-I don't know… I want him to be happy, but I don't know how he'll react if I tell him my feelings."
"Feelings?"
I paused. "I-I mean my thoughts! Not feelings, thoughts."
The Electric type rubbed her chin. "Summer, are you jealous of Viola?"
"Uhh…no! Why would I?"
She gave me a side look. "Summer, I know Kazan wants you to be friends to build his trust, but you have to get involved! Especially if you know he could get hurt."
I leaned on the cushions. "But...what if that's what he wants in a girl?"
"Then he's not worth falling in love over."
I tilted my head upwards. "You say it so matter-of-factly."
"I've been getting into this manga genre called 'shoujo' lately. It gives good relationship advice."
"Right… Maybe I should monitor your manga intake…"
Weldon then exited the elevator wearing his suit. But when Viola, wrapped in a tight-fitting purple silk dress, left the elevator with him, the air around me grew heavy. I hid my sadness as they drew close.
I wrinkled my nose at the strong perfume but was able to say, "You...You both look nice."
My rival grinned. "Thanks, Summer."
After I took a deep breath, I stuttered, "Um…Weldon… Are you sure about this?"
He cocked his head. "About what?"
"Well… I just-"
A strong whiff of Viola's perfume almost made me choke.
"A-Are you okay, Summer?" he asked.
"Y-Yeah…"
"Oh, sorry," his date said sarcastically. "I just wanted to freshen up with this perfume I got at Gloom and Bloom. It's the latest high-end perfume, and I wanted to smell my best."
Or you just wanted people to lose their sense of smell…
Weldon chuckled. "You do smell wonderful, Viola. Now then, what were you going to say, Summer?"
Viola shot me a dirty look before showing her date a sickly sweet smile. "You can ask her later… Come on, Weldon. We'll be late for our reservation."
"O-Oh, right. See you later, Summer."
The pair walked off into the twilight, with Weldon not taking his eyes off of her.
This doesn't feel right… But if he's still into her… I softly smiled. "Let's go get dinner then at the ramen place."
Lightning nodded, and we left for the mall.
An hour later…
We sat in the bright food court of the Mauville Shopping Center. Lightning feasted on her Pokémon-sized portion of ramen. I, on the other hand, just swirled the broth with my chopsticks.
He looked at her the way he looked at me a week ago… Maybe even longer… Am I...not attractive enough..?
"Summer, snap out of it!" Lightning shouted, slapping my left cheek with her tail. As I rubbed my face, she asked, "Why aren't you eating? I thought you love ramen!"
I sighed. "Sorry… I just can't help thinking about them…"
"I told you, if he sees her differently, then he isn't worth it."
"But still…that's not like him…" A tear drop fell into my ramen, surprising me.
The Raichu sighed as she handed me a tissue. "Are you thinking about spying on him?"
My cheeks turned bright red. "N-No! I know he did that when I was training with Jayden, but I'm not going to stoop to that. I have to have some trust with him."
"Then why don't we walk around the mall? Maybe we'll find something to take your mind off Weldon."
I chuckled and petted her. "As soon as I finish."
With my hunger outweighing my emotions, I enjoyed the delicious ramen before we walked around the bright corridors of the building. The stores were selling the latest fashions and technology, but nothing really interested me. It was hard to resist thinking about their date. We ended up resting at the center, where a large fountain and Magikarp pond created a relaxing atmosphere.
I stared at the glass roof, letting Lightning feed the Water types. I just know Viola had something up her sleeve, but I don't know what it is. Dang it, why does this come down to me spying on them?! There's gotta be a less invasive way to figure out what she's up to.
I looked at the north wing and saw a Gloom and Bloom store. Huh… That's convenient.
After whispering to my Pokémon on what I was doing, I made my way inside. Known for its strong mix of smells, only women and the bravest of men were able to explore its wares. I found a female worker, who was restocking some lotion bottles on a light green shelf.
"Excuse me. I'm looking for a perfume that has violet, sweet pea, and petunia in it. Do you have anything like that?"
She raised an eyebrow, then replied, "I'm sorry, we don't sell any perfume like that. Violet and petunia don't really mix all that well; it can cause weird side effects."
"What kind?"
Though it was an unusual question, she whispered, "It can…well…interfere with certain people's minds."
I whispered back, "Oh, okay. Thanks for your help."
After I rejoined Lightning, I stroked my chin. Now I know something's up… Why would Viola lie about her perfume?
Then my ears picked up a nearby phone conversation. Based on the slight crackle in his smooth voice, it sounded like a teenage boy talking to his girlfriend. His yellow PLA jacket and blue shorts showed he was a serious Trainer.
"Hey. How's it going, sweetheart? Eh, you know me, planning for the next Gym battle."
That sounds...cute…
"How's your date going?"
I raised an eyebrow. Wait, did he say 'date'? That's an unusual thing to say to your girlfriend.
He scoffed, brushing his umber hair back. "Still as annoying and weak as ever. But it's working according to plan. When the dinner's over, take him to Megawatt Park where that statue is and break his heart. That'll teach Leland a lesson."
Dread came over me. Oh no, Weldon's in trouble!
I tapped Lightning and tried to leave as discreetly as possible. But I glanced back and noticed he was following me. I quickened my pace into a large crowd, alarming my Pokémon.
"Summer, what's going on?" she hissed.
"Don't look behind you, but I think that guy following us is in cahoots with Viola to hurt Weldon."
Sensing the seriousness in my tone, she nodded. "I'll find Weldon and warn him."
"Thanks. I'll 'return' you to give a reason why you're gone."
She dashed off, and let the red beam of light from her ball purposely miss. When the crowd dispersed, I felt a tap on my right left shoulder. I took a deep breath and turned around.
"Hi…" I said with a grin. "Do you need help with something?"
The teen smirked. "You can say that. I couldn't help but notice you were eavesdropping on my phone call. Did I say anything to offend you?"
"Oh, no. I just realized I was late for something. If you'll excuse me."
He forced me towards the wall, glaring at me with his dark eyes. "Right after I mentioned Leland's name? Don't lie to me, Summer Scorcher."
His words put me on guard, but I feigned ignorance. "Oh? You know who I am?"
"Of course. You're a decent Trainer, but I never understood why you'd pal around with someone like Leland. He'll never get you to the top, especially with several battfams participating in the Hoenn League this year."
"Like you, I guess? Who are you anyway?"
He released his grip and pretended to be shocked. "I'm surprised he never told you. Andy Ackbar, the top student of the 2003 graduating class of the Viridian City Trainer School."
I slowly nodded my head. "That name does ring a Chingling. Didn't Weldon beat you in a battle a few months back?"
Andy crossed his arms and muttered, "He was just lucky I wasn't feeling well that day."
"Right… So what do you want then?"
"Easy. I wanna see how strong you really are. I challenge you to a one-on-one battle; starters only."
"Why starters?"
"You'll see for yourself," he sneered. "Now then, where's the nearest battlefield?"
"There's...a couple at the outside plaza here."
"Excellent. Let's go then. Oh, and don't try to run off. If you do, I'll make sure you'll never complete your Gym challenge."
I clenched my left fist. "Don't worry. I know better."
I walked towards the plaza doors, ignoring Andy's cold gaze. He must have a reason to want a starter battle. Does he know Blaze won't have a chance against his starter?
The plaza, lit up by large string lights and lamp posts, was filled with vibrant landscaping, stone walkways, and benches. A large fountain with a Manectric statue stood in the center, and the battlefields were located to the east. After I let one of the workers know about our battle, he nodded and turned the lights around the rectangle on, providing more visibility. Seeing a battlefield was active, a crowd of people gathered around to watch. I made my way to the south Trainer box as Andy walked to the north one. The worker then flipped another switch, creating the familiar translucent blue barrier that negates any attacks or Pokémon from damaging the surroundings and hurting anyone else.
Andy tossed a Poké Ball up and down before throwing it. "Go, Blastoise!"
A large blue turtle-like Pokémon with brown eyes white claws and appeared. Once he stood on his hind legs, his brown and white shell revealed two cannons behind his shoulders.
[Blastoise, the Shellfish Pokémon and the evolved form of Wartortle. The waterspouts that protrude from its shell are highly accurate. Their bullets of water can precisely nail tin cans from a distance of over 160 feet.]
A Blastoise! So that's why he wanted these rules; he knows I haven't battled against one before! Guess this'll be the first time then. "Let's go, Blaze!"
The Blaziken materialized, unimpressed by the Water type flexing his arms. We made our stances, which puzzled Andy at first.
Then he laughed. "Looks like you're not as basic as I thought. Well then, ladies first."
I shook my head. Stay calm, Summer. He's provoking you. Remember your training. I made a straight right. "Blaze, Fire Punch!"
He charged forward as his right hand burst into flames.
Andy commanded, "Iron Defense!"
The Water type tucked into his shell, which briefly turned silver. The Fire type made contact, but he winced and shook his hand.
So he raised his defenses. This is definitely going to be harder than I thought.
Andy raised his right fist. "Ice Punch!"
Blastoise followed his Trainer's movements as his hand glowed light blue. I moved my left foot back, and Blaze followed my lead, evading the icy fist.
Our opponent smirked. "You're not getting away that easily! Brine!"
Thinking quickly, I shouted, "Flamethrower!"
The blasts of water and fire collided, creating a steamy explosion. Both combatants slid back but still looked fresh.
The battfam wiped his mouth. "Not bad, Scorcher. But let's see how you handle this! Blastoise, Dig!"
To my surprise, his Pokémon jumped and buried into the battlefield, disappearing from view. Blaze scanned the ground back and forth, but couldn't tell where Blastoise was. And neither could I.
Come on! He has to be around here somewhere!
The ground gave way under Blaze, and he was struck by Blastoise's head. Blaze gritted his teeth and landed hard onto the field. The Water type returned to his Trainer's side of the field, grinning at his accomplishment.
"Are you okay, Blaze?"
He got up and nodded, returning to his fighting pose.
Andy didn't let up. "Ice Punch!"
"Counter with Fire Punch!"
The starter Pokémon charged at each other, fists raring to go. Both exchanged blows, with Blaze landing more due to his experience. But I noticed the attacks weren't doing much when the punches hit Blastoise's shell.
That must be from the Iron Defense. I need to change the strategy and focus on the less vulnerable parts.
As the Water type prepared for a right hook, I lifted my right knee. "Blaze Kick!"
Sensing my movement, the Blaze Pokémon planted his left foot and hit Blastoise with a flaming head kick. The Water type missed the punch and stumbled, allowing his opponent to land a front kick to his face. Blastoise took a knee but was able to stand up.
Andy scoffed, "Not bad. But it's not enough! Blastoise, Dig!"
The Shellfish Pokémon dug into the ground once more, causing Blaze to freeze in place.
Not again! If this keeps up, we'll never win! Suddenly, I felt vibrations moving back and forth under my feet. There's no earthquake... Wait, is it because of Blastoise's tunneling? When the sensations stopped, I knew exactly where our opponent was.
"Blaze, he's coming up behind you!"
Alarmed, he turned around and narrowly jumped away from Blastoise's fists.
Andy's shock turned to anger. "I don't know how you dodged that. But I can't let you beat me! Blastoise, Brine!"
"Blaze, Flamethrower!"
The moves caused another steam explosion, this time obscuring our view. But I was used to this scenario.
"Blaze, Sky Uppercut!"
For some reason, I felt Blaze's footsteps and Blastoise's location, allowing me to guide him through the mist.
Andy screamed, "I'll never let you get to him! Finish Blaze with Brine!"
Sensing where he was, I shifted my weight to the right. When the blast of water shot past me, I knew Blaze evaded it as well. As the steam dissipated, we made the uppercut motion, and the Fighting type struck Blastoise's chin. The Water type fell to his knees before collapsing.
I was stunned by the result, but the clapping around me confirmed it. I awkwardly waved to the crowd and thanked them for watching before checking on Blaze. He was panting hard, but was able to remain standing.
"Great job, Blaze," I praised.
He answered with a smile, "Thanks for guiding me. How did you do it though? We never practiced that before."
"To be honest, I don't know myself. But go get some rest."
After my starter returned to his ball, Andy stormed over.
"How dare you! No normie has ever beaten me before!"
Normie? Oh, guess he means non-battling family members.
"But I'm not letting you off so easily!"
The Trainer threw a straight right, but thanks to my training, I blocked his attack and pushed him away. But when he hit me with a right kick, the force knocked me onto the ground. I pondered my next move as he raised his right leg, knowing I didn't have the power to stop him.
Suddenly, Weldon appeared and shoved Andy away from me.
He then growled, "Stay away from Summer, Andy!"
I got back to my feet. "Weldon, how did you find us?"
He looked back and smirked. "A little rodent told me."
Lightning joined me, and the smell of Viola's perfume almost burned my nostrils.
"W-Why do you smell like that, Lightning?"
"Because my precious perfume permeated that pathetic Raichu!" Viola stormed over, her makeup slightly ruined.
When she and Andy made eye contact, their faces turned pale.
"Lightning was right after all," Weldon muttered before turning to his former classmates. "So, you two actually are dating. Why am I not surprised? But why did you do all of this?"
His class rival wiped his chin. "Why else? To exact my revenge on you, Leland. Looks like that perfume wasn't enough to control you after all."
"Wow. You were so desperate, you roped Viola into this. I can't believe I had any feelings for you."
With the jig up, she dropped her sweet demeanor. "That shows how pathetic you really are. You're just a weak battfam."
"And yet both Summer and I beat Andy. Who's the weak battfam now?"
"You'll be singing a different tune once I destroy her in the Hoenn League!" Andy glared at me. "This ain't over, Scorcher!" He turned to his girlfriend. "Let's go, my vixen."
She giggled. "Yes, my jack."
The pair linked elbows and left the plaza. Feeling Weldon's pain, I guided him to an unoccupied bench. Seeing he didn't want to talk, I let Lightning read manga as I stared at the starry sky.
Once I found the Machamp constellation, Weldon broke his silence. "I'm sorry, Summer."
"What for?"
He leaned back and sighed. "I said…so many things without considering your feelings. I'm...I'm such an idiot..."
I shook my head. "It was the perfume, Weldon."
"That doesn't matter. They were right, I am weak."
Seeing his sullen expression, I touched his shoulder and replied emphatically, "That's not true at all, Weldon. You broke through the perfume's power, believed Lightning, and stood up for me. Those are things weak people can't do."
The Kantonian laughed. "You really know how to cheer me up, Summer. To be honest, I never appreciated it until today."
"Why do you say that?"
He looked at the ground. "My date…didn't really go that well. Viola just kept talking about herself, in every way possible. Although my mind focused on her, my heart slowly was getting over her. Good thing I'm not into shallow, materialistic girls."
"Then…what kind of girls are you into?"
My heart beat faster as he gazed at me with his cloudy gray eyes. "You know, kind, smart, understanding girls. Someone I have a good relationship with." Then, he caught himself and turned away. "A-Anyway…it's getting late. Let's head back; we need to get up early for training tomorrow."
"S-Sure…"
We walked back to the Pokémon Center in silence. I thought I would be happy after hearing what he said, but I was still unsure. But when I caught him looking at me, some of those doubts disappeared like the wispy clouds in the night sky.
