After meeting with her parents, Summer battled Norman from the Petalburg City Gym for her fifth Gym Badge. With her parents and friends watching from the stands, she was able to defeat the Gym Leader with the Pokémon she began her journey with. Summer and Weldon now make their way east to the rest of the region. The Hoennese remembered about a Berry harvest festival happening that day, and they decide to pay a visit. What sort of adventures await for them amongst the Berry trees?

Chapter 37- Harvesting an Illusion

Weldon and I flew back to Mauville City on the Tropius Taxi. The morning air was getting cooler due to autumn finally taking full effect, but the humidity was still relatively high. As I thought about what the next half of our travels will take us, I noticed Weldon staring at his Pokégear.

"Are you looking up something, Weldon?"

Startled, he looked up and replied, "I-I'm just…researching ferries…"

"Ferries? Oh, you mean once we arrive in Lilycove City?"

"Y-Yeah. I know it'll take a while for us to get there, but it can't help to look them up now in case they get full. I doubt our Pokémon can swim to the ocean-based cities within one day."

I stroked my chin. "That's true. I can also help you look up some as well. There's a lot of ferries, but they vary in price and timing."

"Great, thanks." He put his phone away. "Anyway, are there any events on the way to Fortree City?"

I looked at my Pokégear. "Well…there is the annual PokéRinger contest in Crossgate Town, the Weather Institute's monthly open house…" I saw the last event and my heart sank. "Darn, I forgot…"

"Forgot what?"

"My relatives are helping out at the Annual Hoenn Berry Harvest Festival on Route 123. I promised that I'd help harvest Berries for the cooking workshops."

The Kantonian gave me a reassuring smile. "We can definitely make a detour for that. What does the event entail, actually?"

I leaned back. "It's a festival to celebrate the main Berry harvest season in Hoenn. The Berry Master, the oldest Berry grower in the region, invites people to enjoy the fruits at his orchards. There are classes and workshops where people can learn about Berry flavor profiles and potential uses, vendors that sell cooking and baking equipment, and even Pokéblock making classes and sessions. But the main event is a Berry harvesting contest where the person and their Grass type Pokémon who collect the most Berries within two hours can choose what they want to do with the Berries they collected."

"That sounds really cool. I do want to meet your aunt and uncle too; I didn't really get to talk to them during the New Trainer Festival."

"Oh, yeah. Camilla and Uncle Alberto are friends. I haven't seen Uncle Alberto really battle, so I don't know how they met. Do you know?"

He pondered before replying, "I thought it was weird too, but I'm not sure myself."

{We're about to descend into Mauville City. Please make sure you're seated with seatbelts fastened.}

We re-entered the region's main city. After thanking the driver, I guided Weldon and Lightning east on Route 118 and eventually Route 123. A large wooden house with rows of Berry trees behind it stood out amongst the untouched forest. People were setting up tables and tents, preparing large woven baskets by the Berry trees, and accepting ingredients from vendors for the cooking demonstrations. As soon as I could make out my aunt and uncle in the crowd, I ran towards them.

"Uncle Alberto! Auntie Marisol!"

My uncle saw me first and beamed. "Summer! I'm glad you could make it."

"I'm so sorry I forgot about today. I was supposed to help you set up."

Auntie Marisol comforted me with a hug. "That's all right, dear. Your mom said you've been pretty busy lately, so we're just happy you came." After giving Lightning a hug as well, she noticed Weldon. "Oh! This must be the boy you're traveling with."

The Kantonian nodded. "I'm Weldon Leland. It's nice to see you both again."

"Ah, yes, it's nice to see you too," Uncle Alberto responded before shaking his hand. "I'm glad you chose to spend your hiatus in Hoenn; it's much different from the battling culture in Kanto and Johto, huh?"

"Yes, very much so. Is there anything we can do to help?"

My aunt shook her head. "No, we got everything covered. But you're welcome to look at the orchards and the schedule to see what workshops we're having this year."

"Great, thanks, Auntie Marisol."

We picked up a brochure, then strolled through the rows of trees, enjoying the wafting scents of ripe fruit. As Lightning disposed some bruised Berries that had fallen to the ground in nearby metal bins, Weldon looked at the pamphlet.

"Hm… Berry tasting, Pokéblock making basics, cooking with Berries, baking with Berries, drinks with Berries… Wow, there's certainly a lot packed in one day, even with the Berry harvesting contest."

I laughed. "Yeah, the festival has always been full of activities. Will you be doing the contest?"

Weldon looked at the open paths along the tree. "I don't think so. Although it'll be fun, I don't think Venusaur can fit through these paths without breaking some of the trees. Besides…" he rubbed the back of his head. "I-It really wouldn't be fair…"

I sensed a pang of pain, so I decided not to press him further.

He recovered by showing a small smile. "I'll just enjoy the festival's offerings. What about you?"

I stroked my chin. "Maybe. I've seen Olive jumping from tree to tree while we were training for the Petalburg City Gym, so she may be trying to learn a new move."

"Huh. She already knows Quick Attack, so I wonder what she's trying to learn."

"Guess it'll be quicker to ask."

I let out Olive, who looked at the Berry trees.

"Wow, these trees look great from jumping around in."

I giggled. "I agree. I have noticed you've been jumping among the trees lately. That's normally not part of your training regimen."

The Grass type blushed. "W-Well… I wanted to surprise you by learning a new move by myself. But…it's been a little difficult doing so."

I petted the bashful Pokémon. "I'm glad you want to learn a new move. Let me know if you need any help, okay?"

"S-Sure, Summer."

A familiar sneer interrupted the heartwarming moment. "You still can't learn a new move by yourself? It's a good thing I abandoned you after all."

I whipped around and saw Olive's former Trainer, Lín Huánglóng, placing his left hand on an Oran Berry tree.

"Huánglóng! What're you doing here?"

"Isn't it obvious? I'm going to do the Berry harvesting contest."

I cocked my head. "It…doesn't seem like something you'd do for training."

Olive's former Trainer shrugged. "Isn't that what you're doing? I'm just learning from my enemies. You understand."

More like steal strategies. "If that's the case, what do you want for your wish?"

Huánglóng sneered. "You know it's rude to ask people their wishes. But since you're not going to win, I'll tell you. I've heard rumors that Alberto Velasquez was a strong Trainer before he retired to work on a dump of a farm. I want him to teach me everything he knows in exchange for the Berries I collected, so I can conquer all my opponents."

Weldon noticed my anger and continued for me so I wouldn't reveal the truth. "Do you have any proof in regards to the rumors?"

"The article Diggy Dunsparce published, "Where did the Good Trainers Go?", a while back is all the proof I need."

Weldon and I grimaced at the author's name, but he continued, "You do realize he's a liar and an invasive person, don't you?"

The teen laughed. "He's just misunderstood, a noble seeker of truth. Now, if you'll excuse me, Zhànshì and I have to prepare. See you around, losers."

The teen strutted off, making me more upset.

"How dare he insult Uncle Alberto like that!" I vented once the braggart was out of sight. "He wants to use my uncle even though he doesn't respect him! What a…a…"

To my surprise, Olive placed a calming hand on my arm. "Don't worry, Summer. I won't let him get away with it, not anymore."

"Olive… Does that mean you?"

She nodded. "I'll do the contest. Let's make sure Huánglóng doesn't find out about your uncle's secrets."

"Thanks, Olive. We'd better register before all the slots are full."

We ran back to the front of the house just as visitors started to arrive. Olive and I signed up for the contest and were almost the last group to register. I glanced to my right and saw Huánglóng glare at me before wandering along the booths.

I wiped my brow, and we rejoined Weldon and Lightning. "Now that we got in, we have one hour until the contest starts. Do you want to walk around the booths?"

"Sure."

We walked along the bustling rows, but I didn't pay much attention to them. I know I made the right decision. But why do I feel so nervous? Is it because I want to stop Huánglóng? Or…is it because I want to know Uncle Alberto's secrets myself? No, I have to stay focused on the goal.

Suddenly, I bumped into someone. "Oh my gosh, I'm sorry."

I looked and was startled to see my uncle laughing. "Don't worry, Summer. I'm all right. Though…I'm not sure you are."

"O-Oh! I-It's nothing, Uncle Alberto."

He stroked his chin. "So, I heard you're participating in the Berry harvesting contest this year."

"Yeah, with Olive."

My uncle beamed. "That's good to hear. I've heard there's quite some competition this time around."

I grinned nervously, hoping he wouldn't notice. "I kind of overheard that too. But I'm sure Olive and I will do our best and win."

The Wood Gecko Pokémon nodded. "Yes, we will."

An announcement came over the local PA system. {Will this year's Berry harvest contest participants head over to the table nearest to the orchards? We will begin the contest momentarily.}

"I have to go," I said.

Weldon said, "I'll watch Lightning while you and Olive participate."

"Thanks, Weldon."

Uncle Alberto smiled, but he seemed more serious than usual. "Good luck, Summer."

"Thanks. I'll see you guys later."

Olive and I ran to the aforementioned table. Three of the other contestants, all boys, were already there, and once we arrived, Huánglóng and a girl joined us. While the four young Trainers interacted with their Pokémon partners, a Roselia, a Bulbasaur, a Chikorita, and an Oddish, Huánglóng sized up his competition.

"Hmph. Just a bunch of kids… This should be easy with my Sceptile."

Don't get so cocky, Huánglóng.

An elderly man in a long dark blue robe and a tan gardening apron appeared and motioned us to the table. He was balding and had a long gray beard, but his brown eyes sparkled with a youthful energy.

"Ah, everyone's here. I'm glad you all decided to participate in this year's Berry harvesting contest. I'm Minoru, the Hoenn Berry Master."

Huánglóng cleared his throat. "Shouldn't there be an audience watching? What's the point of having a contest if there's no one watching?"

"Oh, my. Quite a showman, aren't you? Well, it's always been tradition to have the participants compete without the eyes of the public to avoid any potential for cheating. But once the points have been tallied, the results will be announced to everyone attending."

My rival responded with a smug smile, making me more irritated.

"Where was I again?" the Berry Master pondered aloud. "Ah yes. The rules. You and your Pokémon can pick the Berries from any of my trees within the two-hour time limit; we will give you the signals for the one-hour and fifteen minute marks at the appropriate times. There will be baskets at the base of the trees, where you can either let the Berries fall into them or you can place them in yourselves. The only restrictions are as follows: you and your Pokémon need to remain in eyesight of each other; you cannot damage any Berries or trees; you can attack your fellow competitors only when both Pokémon are not touching any Berries; and once a Pokémon picks the Berry and it falls from the tree, it cannot be touched by any other Pokémon. My Pokémon will be patrolling the orchards to make sure everyone is following the rules."

I see. So the strategy is to focus on picking as many Berries as you can while avoiding everyone else as possible. If Olive's learning what I think she is, then this contest will be really helpful for her training.

Minoru then laid six pouches on the table. Each contained powders in the following colors: white, red, blue, black, yellow, and green.

"Each of you has been assigned a pouch with a specific colored powder. Your Pokémon is required to use the powder from the pouch to mark which Berries they picked."

Remembering my assigned color, I picked up the red bag as the others got theirs. After tying the pouch around Olive's neck, I noted Huánglóng's pouch color was yellow.

Minoru moved the table aside. "Now, you may begin."

We all ran into the orchards and targeted different trees. The four competitors' Pokémon remained on the ground and launched their attacks at the stems of the ripe fruit. Seeing that they couldn't reach the Berries high above, Huánglóng and I appeared to have the same strategy. The Grovyle and Sceptile leapt onto the trees and harvested the Berries with their extended leafy appendages. Zhànshì made every effort to knock Olive off the branches, but she was able to evade each Leaf Blade while successfully using Fury Cutter to stop him from claiming the juicy treasures.

Huánglóng grew frustrated. "Let's head further in, Zhànshì!"

The Forest Pokémon nodded and they traveled deeper into the man-made forest.

"Should we follow them?" Olive asked.

I looked at the other participants, focusing on the trees closest to them. "No, we should start heading west. There are more trees where the Berries are higher up in that direction."

She nodded, and we ran that way. As she collected more Berries, Olive's movements grew quicker, almost as if there were two of her. I smiled, confirming the move she wanted to learn.

We harvested almost all the Berries in the area and heard the call for the one-hour mark. As we were deciding where to go next, I heard soft, rhythmic tapping in the trees to my left.

Although it wouldn't have sounded like a threat, I knew who was making that sound. "Olive, come back down!"

She sensed my urgency and quickly descended, avoiding Zhànshì's claws. His Trainer appeared, smirking.

"So, you actually sensed us coming. I'm surprised someone of your skill level was able to do so."

"Huánglóng. I'm guessing you finished harvesting the trees where you were?"

He snickered. "It seems you know this orchard quite well, Scorcher. Almost as if…you're familiar with this area."

I stepped back. "What are you implying?"

My rival walked around a wary me and Olive. "Isn't it obvious? You want Alberto Velasquez to train you so you studied everything there is to know about him! I bet that's how you knew about today's festival too. Guess you're learning from me as well."

I sweatdropped. How did he get to that conclusion? Oh well, at least he doesn't know the truth. "Y-Yeah, that's totally right. You got me there, Huánglóng."

Thankfully, he laughed and boasted, "Of course I did. And now, I'll make sure you won't win! Zhànshì, Leaf Blade!"

The Sceptile rushed forward, the leaves on his arms extending and glowing green.

I shouted, "Olive, dodge with Quick Attack and stay close to the trees!"

She sped to her left, dodging the Grass type attack. Olive then approached the nearest Oran Berry tree and jumped into its branches.

Huánglóng gritted his teeth as she harvested more Berries. "Zhànshì, X-Scissor!"

The Sceptile leapt up to Olive's height and raised his arms in an X-pattern.

"Screech!"

The Wood Gecko Pokémon opened her mouth and emitted rings of ear-piercing energy at her attacker. Zhànshì winced, but he was able to power through and strike Olive. She fell onto the ground, her Pokémon rival laughing as he harvested the remaining Berries from the tree.

"Are you okay, Olive?" I asked, running over to her.

She got up and rubbed her chest. "Y-Yeah, I'm fine."

I checked my Pokégear. "We don't have much time left. Do you think you'll be able to get back up into the branches?"

She stared at the Forest Pokémon jumping in between the trees. "Not with him doing that. The moment I get up there, he'll knock me down."

I stroked my chin. "Maybe there is a way… How close are you with learning your secret move?"

Olive was surprised. "Y-You know what it is?"

"I have an inkling."

Huánglóng looked at the baskets full of ripe Berries. "Looks like we're almost done here. That wish is as good as mine!"

I smiled. "Not for long! Olive, Double Team!"

She took a deep breath and leapt up. Zhànshì stood in her way but was surprised when three copies of the Grovyle materialized in front of him.

"D-Don't just stand there, Zhànshì! X-Scissor!"

The fully evolved Pokémon aimed his attack at the leftmost one, but he fell through, revealing it to be a decoy. Olive grinned as she passed by, collecting more Berries from the trees opposite of Zhànshì.

We then heard the fifteen-minute mark announcement.

"Come on, Zhànshì! Move faster!"

The Sceptile nodded and jumped to the next several trees. Though he was harvesting a sizeable amount, I could tell he was getting tired.

"Olive, use Quick Attack and Fury Cutter to grab the remaining Berries!"

She bounded on the branches, using her increased speed to get the Berries left on the trees. Zhànshì tried to stop her, but he was too exhausted.

As Olive cut the last Berry around us, we heard, {The Berry harvesting contest is over! Contestants, please make your way back to the orchard entrance.}

"Great job, Olive," I praised, giving her a high five when she returned to the ground. "And you were able to learn Double Team too."

She beamed. "I can't wait to master it and make more copies."

Huánglóng brushed by me and scoffed. "You just got lucky. Come, Zhànshì. Let's wait for our eventual prize."

His Pokémon harrumphed at his middle evolution before following his Trainer. After giving them a few minutes, we headed back in the same direction. I could feel eyes watching me from the trees. I thought they were the Berry Master's Pokémon, but their gazes felt more piercing than what I would've expected.

We returned to the bustling crowds and were told the results will be released in a few hours. Olive and I wandered around the booths until we saw Weldon and Lightning.

"Hey, Summer. How did it go?" he asked as my Pokémon happily greeted each other.

I wiped my brow. "Quite exhausting. It's been a whirlwind gathering fruit and battling Huánglóng."

"Wait, you battled him?"

"Kind of. Hopefully we did enough to win, or at least get more than him."

Weldon grinned. "I'm sure you did fine, Summer. Want to get some food while we wait? I saw they're selling some Berry tarts that were made earlier."

"Mmm…that sounds good. Let's go."

A few hours later…

Olive and Lightning were enjoying some Pecha and Sitrus Berry parfaits while Weldon and I snacked on some Razz Berry cheesecake bars. Though my piece was less eaten than his.

"You okay, Summer?" he asked. "You can't do much now since the harvesting is over."

I leaned back on the bench and sighed. "I know…but I'm still worried Huánglóng won."

"We can't do anything about that either. But if it does happen, I'm sure your uncle will know how to handle the situation."

"True. Uncle Alberto's handled much more difficult issues before. I guess it'll be up to him, but I can't help but feel partially responsible for it."

"You can't control things that you don't have control over." Weldon softly smiled. "I know you always worry about those closest to you. It's a powerful trait, but you also need to know how dangerous it can be."

"Huh? What do you mean?"

{If I can have your attention, please. All contestants and those interested, the results of this year's Annual Berry Harvesting Contest will be announced in front of the Berry Master's house in a few minutes.}

I stood up. "Oh, we better get going."

We headed towards the house, where a small crowd was forming. Olive and I went up to the front with the other contestants; all except the arrogant pair were as nervous as I was.

Huánglóng glanced at us and sneered, "You here to see the winner, Scorcher?"

I crossed my arms. "If it's not you, then sure."

"Looks like someone knows they got beat. I'll make sure to milk Alberto Velasquez for all his battling worth."

I turned away, gritting my teeth. The Berry Master then walked over with a microphone.

After testing it out, he said, {Hello, everyone. If you haven't met me yet, I'm Minoru, the Hoenn Berry Master. I want to thank everyone for coming here today, whether it's participating in our workshops, buying from the vendors, or competing in our Annual Berry Harvesting Contest. I'm truly blessed to be able to share Hoenn's bountiful harvests with all of you.} He cleared his throat. {Now then, I'm sure everyone here is excited to know who the winner of the contest. As per tradition, the winner will be able to make a choice on what they want to do with their Berries.}

The Berry Master pulled out a slip of paper, and I held my breath. {The winners of this year's Annual Berry Harvesting Contest are…Rosanne and her partner, Roselia! Rosanne, please come up here and accept your prize!}

The crowd cheered, and Olive and I were stunned at the results. But not as stunned as Huánglóng and Zhànshì.

"H-How can this be?" he stuttered as his Sceptile looked away in frustration. "W-We got all the Berries where we've been!" He glared at us. "You battled us on purpose!"

I rolled my eyes. "It's funny you said that when you were the ones who attacked us first."

The girl and her Grass type beamed as they went up to the Minoru and accepted a gold trophy filled with gemstone Berries. {Thank you, Mr. Minoru. It's all thanks to Rosie's Magical Leaf that we were able to harvest all the Berries on the trees without needing to climb them.}

{Yes, my Pokémon noted that to me, and I was truly impressed by your skills. Now, what would you like to do with your Berries?}

Rosanne grinned. {I'd like to give my Berries to the Mauville City Pokémon Center!}

We clapped at the kindhearted response.

{Very well. We will donate the Berries to the Pokémon Center on your behalf. Everyone, thank you for coming and please enjoy the remainder of the festival!}

After the cheering, the crowd slowly dispersed. Weldon and Lightning rejoined us.

"I'm sorry you didn't win, Summer," he said.

I shook my head. "That's all right. I'm just happy Huánglóng didn't."

We watched the arrogant teen and his Pokémon walk towards Route 118.

Wiping my brow, I added, "Guess I was worked up for nothing."

A friendly hand clasped my shoulder. "Sorry you didn't win, Summer."

"Uncle Alberto!" I turned around and saw my relatives.

Auntie Marisol smiled. "It was a close contest too. You came in second place, while that Huánglóng fellow came in third."

"Wow…I guess our strategy paid off, didn't it, Olive?"

She beamed. "It sure did."

I petted her as Uncle Alberto looked at the departing Trainer.

"So he really was interested in me after all…" he murmured.

"What was that, Uncle Alberto?"

He snapped out of his thoughts. "O-Oh, it's nothing. Anyway, thanks for coming, you two. I hope you enjoyed the festival."

Weldon nodded. "I certainly did. I'm sure Mom will enjoy all the stuff I bought for her."

My uncle laughed. "I know she will. Let me know if you want to visit the farm. Marisol and I will be happy to show you around."

"Thanks, I will."

I smiled. It's nice Uncle Alberto and Weldon are getting along.

My relatives turned to me. "Goodbye, Summer," Auntie Marisol said. "Good luck with the rest of your journey."

"Thanks, Auntie Marisol. It was good seeing you both again."

Uncle Alberto gave me a hug. "Of course, and thank you, Summer."

"Huh? What did you need to thank me for?"

"Just…for being you…"

I felt the relief in his heart, and I nodded. We waved goodbye as they returned to the festival.

I looked at my Pokégear. "It's getting late. Weldon, do you want to camp or go back to Mauville City?"

"Hm… The PokéRinger festival is tomorrow, right? Maybe we should camp along Route 119."

I noticed dark clouds were forming over the aforementioned path. "It does rain a lot there. But I've read about a hostel there that lets Trainers stay overnight."

"Great, then let's head there for the night. Hopefully it won't rain when we walk over there."

Laughing, I replied, "I hope so. Come on, let's get going!"

We ran back to Route 118, hoping we could beat the rain clouds.

Alberto and Marisol watched the vendors putting away their wares as the festival drew to a close.

"It was a good festival this year, wasn't it, Marisol?"

She leaned on her husband's arm. "It certainly was, Alberto."

He felt her grip become tighter. "Is something wrong, my mariposa?"

Sighing, she replied, "Are you sure you want to continue keeping the secret from Summer? If that Huánglóng boy knows about your past, then…"

Alberto patted her head. "I know... I don't know how he found out about me, but I'm taking all precautions to make sure it's not public. At least, not yet." He looked away. "Don't worry, Marisol, she'll know why we came to Hoenn."

Suddenly, he felt they were being watched. The farmer glanced around, making his wife nervous.

"What is it, castaño?"

"I-It's nothing. Come on, let's help with the cleanup."

He approached a vendor and helped him pack some things away.

Marisol sighed sharply. Oh, Alberto. She's a lot like you, you know.

Meanwhile…

Hamsetrin watched the festival from a nearby plateau. After getting intel from his Absol and Crobat, he gritted his teeth and crumpled an old magazine in his hands.

"So Diggy Dunsparce is still useless after all. Maybe I should try a different strategy to stop my target."

A sinister thought formed in the villain's mind as he spied on the girl running in the rain with his target. Maybe it's time for Summer Scorcher to realize why that girl hates her.
