Chapter Five
As the four adults all walked into the small one room apartment Sam and Dean shared a look of worry as they looked as the two girls they now had in their proximity were both blondes.
"You do know that now, your mom is going to skin us when she finds out you're here." Christina said as they all sat around the table where Dean looked over at Jo trying to decide if he should call Ellen.
"Well, she'll never find out." Jo said giving Christina a glare while also looking over at Dean as he continued to look like a scared bunny. "Promise me you won't call her and let her know. All she knows is that I'm heading to Vegas for a week away from everything."
"I'm not sure I feel comfortable with you being here." Dean said with an uneasy look in his face while Sam was busy looking up everything there was about the apartment complex on his laptop.
"But you're okay with your little sister being here?" Jo asked as if she caught Dean in something. But when Dean couldn't come up with an answer, Jo nodded as pulled out her pocket knife and starting to flip it around looking over the folder she had given Sam when they arrived at the Roadhouse.
"Speaking of family, Jo your mom's calling." Christina said and after sharing a brief look Christina ignored the call and leaned back in her chair. "You owe me." She said gently placing the cellphone on the table.
"Just pretend you're ignoring her phone calls after you left us seven years ago." Jo said making Christina frown and look away.
The four adults were quiet when all of a sudden came a distinct ringtone and Dean pulled out his cellphone. "Yeah?" He answered knowing there was only a few people who had it. "Hi Ellen." Dean said looking up and saw that Jo was standing up, pleading with him to not say anything.
"Don't tell her anything." Jo whispered.
"I'm going to tell her." Dean threatened but after a few minutes of staring, he composed himself and said as calmly as possible, "I haven't seen her. I will. If I see or hear from her, I'll send her back." He quickly hung up and saw that Jo smiled and sat back down at the table.
After a quick look through the folder that Jo had prepared they found a rather well folded blueprint of the hotel and they spread it over the table checking out the flooring to see if they found anything out of place.
"So there isn't any ancient burial ground anywhere near this place?" Christina asked using Sam's laptop as he was looking over the folder of victims, while Dean paced around the table clearly trying to think of a way to protect both Jo and Christina from whatever was going after blonde girls.
"No this was all just an empty field that became these apartments in the early 1920's." Jo said pulling out a small knife and began to toss it up and down which caught Christina's attention and there she noticed that Dean was uncomfortable.
"Well, to have a spirit that leaves behind ectoplasm means this thing is super pissed off." Sam stated which came with a small round of nods from the two girls. "So what caused our ghostly friend to be severely pissed off that they're leaving ectoplasm?"
"Not quite sure. A lot of spirits that are capable are usually caused by extremely violent deaths but the only death that could be labeled as 'Unnatural' was a janitor that died while mopping the floor back in the thirties." Christina said looking up just as she saw Jo gently toss the knife she held into the air only to catch it expertly by the handle seconds later.
"I highly doubt the Janitor is our ghost," Jo said catching sight of how nervous Dean was being, and she looked to be slightly annoyed by what she saw. "He wasn't in the market for any women as he focused more on work for his actual family."
"If it's not a violent death then maybe we have an item that this spirit has a hold on." Jo stated once again absently fiddling with the small knife in her hand.
"Could you put the knife down?" Dean asked after a few minutes of watching her. He saw Jo giving him an annoyed look but relaxed when he watched her gently set the knife on the table. "Okay," he said switching in taking control of this case. "Since we got four floors, let's split up into two teams. Sam, Christy, you two take the two bottom floors. Jo and I will take the top two."
"It's going to be faster if we split up and each take a floor." Jo said standing up as all four headed for the door of their apartment.
"I'm not going to let you out of my sight." Dean said with a narrow look and then looked at Sam to silently command he'd do the same with their sister. "I'm already in hot water with your mom with lying to her. She'd skin me if something were to happen to you on my watch."
Jo went to protest Dean's request but shut her mouth when she knew what he said was right.

Sam held the emf and was slowly checking doors, and fixtures, while his sister silently walked behind him still holding onto the folder only bumping into him on occasion.
"Find something interesting?" He asked gently crouching to check a grate near the floor. As he hadn't heard her say anything but knew she was still there from her accidently bumping into him.
"I don't know," Christina said bumping into Sam's back when he stood back up, face planting into the folder. "Sorry." She muttered finally putting the folder down so she was more aware of her surroundings. "Something about this place doesn't quite make sense. I mean I don't think it's an item that's holding this spirit here. It's like I should know more about this place but I just can't find the proper folder in my brain to access the knowledge."
"Look, don't blame yourself over not knowing. Dean may act like he's a walking Hunter Journal but he has his moments of not knowing what the situation is either. It makes us all human." He wrapped his arm around her shoulders as he pulled her towards him as another couple walked in heading to a apartment they had scanned the door of a few minutes before. "But back to the case, there's nothing here on the first floor."
"Then let's try the staircase then, as there wasn't anything in the elevator and we might as well check everything." Christina said changing the subject. As they walked around the corner to the door leading to the stairs, Christina stopped and quickly flipped around looking all over the room.
"Christy, you okay?" Sam asked seeing his sister's actions and was worried as he looked around her. Him having an easier time as he could easily tower over her to seek out a threat. "What happened?"
"It felt as though someone grabbed my hair." Christina said her voice slightly shaky as she quickly rushed into the staircase and had climbed the first few stairs trying to get away from the bottom floor as possible. "Sorry, I guess I psyched myself into being paranoid." She turned away not wanting to see her brother's worried expression. "Come on let's check the next floor."
Sam nodded and they slowly made their way up the stairs while the EMF was silent the entire trip up. As they stepped onto the second floor he noticed that his sister was constantly looking around her and fought to run with a gust of the AC that blew at them from each of the vents. As they neared the end of the second floor Sam's phone began to ring. "Hey Dean, we haven't found anything on our floor." He gently turned his sister around and led her towards the elevator near the stairs. "Yeah, we'll be there in a few minutes. Alright. Bye."
"Everything alright?" Christina asked when Sam pressed the four button but also went closer towards her brother as she started get a little paranoid.
"Dean and Jo found a vent with a clump of blonde hair in it, on the fourth floor. Dean's wanting us to regroup and to try and find out more about this place. Hopefully we can."
"Scary to think whatever is taking women is leaving souvenirs." Christina said with a shudder. "Gives me serial killer vibes and that is just messed up that they can move without being seen."
"That is a very good theory." Sam said knocking on their apartment as they didn't have a key. "The thing is there will probably be a lot of serial killers that died in violent deaths near or around here. So narrowing it down will make it a bit difficult."
"But it's a start." Christina said and walked into the room when Dean opened the door. "So you found blond hair in a vent?"
"I did." Jo said with a proud look on her face. "It's my first ghost and I felt like something was trying to get a hold of me."
Christina looked down at the table which caught Dean's attention.
"Christy... What happened?" Dean asked making his sister take in a slow breath.
"We were walking to the stairs when we were looking for anything that would be left behind out ghost..." Dean nodded slowly and Christina took a slow breath. "It felt like something or someone tried to grab hold of my hair. Kind of gave me an uncomfortable feeling."
"So it means it's already picking you two are possible victims. Stick to one or the other until we get rid of this thing." Dean said but sighed. "So anyone want pizza?" He asked changing the uncomfortable situation into something more positive even though he was feeling the pressure to keep the two women that had targets on their backs safe.
"Pizza is a great idea." The remaining three agreed and Dean pulled out his cellphone and placed a food order, he figured that the remaining three only agreed with him as they wanted to focus more on the hunt then food.
"By the way, I'm buying you dinner." Dean said to Jo, after he hung up his phone. "So now I can ride you as hard as I want." As soon as the words left his mouth his face turned red with embarrassment causing Jo to hold back their laughter. "I didn't mean it like that..." Dean said quickly making Jo laugh harder making Sam and Christina confused at the clear inside joke going on. "Just forget it." Dean said frustrated making Sam and Christina roll their eyes and go back to trying to find more information on their case.
"What's the bed situation going to be?" Christina asked after a few minutes of uncomfortable silence.
"I was going to suggest us girls takes the bedroom while the boys take the couches." Jo said and the boys quietly nodded in agreement knowing they couldn't really argue with her.
"Can't do anything about it." Dean sighed glancing at the couch and frowned. Although he had slept on smaller couches every once in a while he just hoped he could get his four hours to function.

Christina woke up on the bed the next morning and noticed the other side had not been slept in. She figured Jo didn't sleep as she seemed too fixated on this case. She let out a yawn as she stretched feeling her body pop and snap back into place which felt rather pleasant. As she got herself ready, and stepped out of the only bedroom. She found Jo, fidgeting with the small knife and going over the small folder for the case.
"You know sleep is good for you." Christina said sliding into the seat across from her friend. Her voice was low as to not wake up her brothers who did not seem comfortable.
"I couldn't sleep." Jo said not looking up as she spoke in the same soft voice.
"Couldn't or wouldn't?" Christina questioned raising one of her eyebrows.
"Okay I wouldn't sleep as I'm too invested in this case." Jo admitted. "I'll sleep when this is over, I promise."
"Yeah you'll sleep because you'll be dead." Christina warned leaning back in her chair. "You can't be a good hunter if you recharge your batteries. You not sleeping will cause you to miss things that would hurt you. Trust me I was the same way."
"Really? You're lecturing me about this? Are you some kind of expert now?" Jo accused looking up from the folder.
"Did you know your mom was the one that told me about your dad? How she wasn't happy with me leaving by myself that when she saw I was determined to leave she warned me to watch my back and be careful who I trusted. I knew she was trying to get me to stay put as I was a daughter to her and she didn't want to see me get hurt. I couldn't sleep at all as I could see your mom's face looking down at your dead body and it scared me. Now that I heard you didn't sleep I'm getting a sick feeling in my gut that you're going to be on a table dead."
"You have so little faith in me don't you?" Jo challenged.
Christina shook her head. "Faith's got nothing to do with this. Jo, I always thought of you as a sister. I don't want anything to happen to you. That's all."
"You girls already awake?" Sam asked glancing over at Dean who, despite being in an odd angle on the bed was still snoring.
"Yeah." Both girls said not wanting to get into another tiff this early.
"What time is it anyways?" Sam asked pulling on his shoes.
"Quarter after eight." Jo replied.
"Sam, do you want to go get coffee?" Christina said seeing as Jo went right back to reading the folder.
"Yeah." Sam said standing up and heading to the front door. "Did she get any sleep?" He asked when they stepped into the elevator.
"No. She's too invested to think rationally. I just hope that if she gets another case she doesn't kill herself by not sleeping." Christina said with a soft sigh. "I was just like her when I first started to hunt by myself. I nearly got myself killed by a ghost. After that I told myself that I would never force myself to stay awake on a hunt. But that doesn't stop me from forcing myself to stay awake while driving so I'm a walking hypocrite."
"Just makes you human." Sam chuckled as he walked out of the elevator on the lobby floor and both froze when they saw a couple of police cars with their lights flashing and four policeman stood just outside the elevator.
"Morning officers..." Christina said moving closer to her brother out of nerves as none of them were expecting the police there. "What's going on here?"
"Do you live here?" An officer asked when Sam and Christina stepped out of the elevator.
"We're just visiting." Christina stated, keeping her answer short as she and Sam knew not to admit to anything or give the police anything to be suspicious about.
"Were you two here last evening?" The same officer asked.
"Are we being accused of anything?" Sam asked seeing how the police were looking at the two of them.
"No, we are just wondering as someone has disappeared in this building. The victim lived on the second floor and her boyfriend reported her missing this morning." The officer said, his voice tired as if he had just gotten there without his morning coffee.
"Oh, well, what is the victim's name or where she lived?" Christina asked calmly hoping she didn't sound too nosey. "I mean, like I said we're just visiting and we may know who she was."
"Well, her first name was Tessa. She lived in room 213 and like I said her boyfriend called earlier when she didn't call him last night, when she said she would."
"Well, we'll go and see if our friends who live here have heard or seen her." Christina said trying to make her next few actions as natural as possible. "I wish you luck, officers." Christina and Sam both walked into the elevator and pressed the number four and as luck would have it the door opened on the second floor and one of the couples that they had seen the day before walked in carrying a few boxes. Christina quickly stepped off along with Sam and they quickly moved down the hall to the room.
"That was weird that the cops just gave us all that information so easily." Sam said seeing nobody near the door to the apartment. "Seems really weird. Normally cops wouldn't do something like that." He pulled out his EMF and switched it on out of habit and it softly began to whirl. "Okay so this is something like the others." Sam stated, as Christina carefully placed an ear on the door to see if anyone was inside the room.
When she couldn't hear anything, quickly and quietly pulled out her lockpick and unlocked the apartment. Instantly both of the siblings saw the signs of the cracks in the ceiling leading down to a vent near the bedroom door. Careful they both walked up and saw a small puddle of black ooze completely camouflaged by the color of the stain the wood was.
"We have another victim." Christina said slowly standing up by turning. She had just taken a step away from vent when she felt someone grab hold of her hair and pull, sending her on her back clutching the back of her head. Even though she was in pain from the pull she didn't scream out as she didn't want to have police show up and question them as to how they got into the apartment which was a crime scene.
"Christy," Sam said rushing to his sister's side and helping her back to her feet. "Are you okay?" He asked quickly ushering her out of the apartment after a quick wipe down the door knob.
"I'll be fine. Let's get the hell out of here." Christina said rolling to her feet and sprinting out the door. She didn't have to know her brother was right behind her as she continued to sprint up the stairs taking two steps at a time until she reached the top of the next floor that's when Sam caught up with her and grabbed her hand. "Let's go warn Dean and Jo. They need to know."
