"Pokémon and humans at the same time"

(moves)

May 17th 9:30 am Brendan PoV

After finishing cleaning up after breakfast, calling mom, and breaking camp, we set off for Petalburg. It was slow going at first, what with Dokuga wanting to challenge everything that moved, and Sanguine egging her on; but eventually after assuring her she would get the chance to battle, traveling began to go more smoothly. After about an hour of traveling (and beating up the Pokémon that kept trying to steal our food), we finally encountered human life. A pair of younger looking trainers camped by the side of the road.

"Hey there!" one of the youngsters yelled, "You a trainer?" I grinned eagerly, itching for a battle. "Yeah, wanna battle?"

"Heck yeah, just one second!" he then started to rummage through his bag, and pulled out a pokéball. "I only have this one, so is a one vs. one good?"

"Yeah, that's fine with me. Wait, who's gonna ref?" I asked. The other youngster said, " I can! This knucklehead might be my brother, but he's annoying, so I should have no problem being impartial." I chuckled and replied, "Alright, lets begin!"

"On the count of three, send out your Pokémon! One…Two…THREE!" our referee called. "Go, Ziggsy!" my opponent cried, I probably should've asked his name. "Let's go Flare!"

My opponent sent out a brown, white, and cream colored Poke॔mon. I quickly pulled out my pokédex and scanned it. 'Zigzagoon restlessly wanders everywhere at all times. This Pokémon does so because it is very curious. It becomes interested in anything that it happens to see. The hair on Zigzagoon's back is bristly. It rubs the hard back hair against trees to leave its territorial markings. This Pokémon may play dead to fool foes in battle.' Good to know, but the plan I had should easily win us this battle. "Ziggsy, use (Tackle)!" his Zigzagoon charged towards Flare.

"Flare, (Focus energy) into (Growl) and be ready to doge if you can!" Flare just barely managed to get the (Growl) off before Zigzagoon struck. Thankfully, (Growl) softened the blow. "Flare use (Scratch ), then (Growl) once again!" (Scratch) did a little damage, but (Growl) was more important in my mind. If we could lower Zigzagoon's attack enough, we would have free reign to attack without taking too much damage in return.

"Zigzagoon (tackle) again!" The youngster called.

"Flare, kick up some dirt, dodge, and (Growl) again!" To my surprise instead of just kicking dirt up, Flare used (Sand Attack). "Alright buddy, way to learn a new move!" I cried out.

"Argh, why aren't you attacking!? You're going to lose like that!" The youngster chided and smirked at me. "Ziggsy, use (tackle) one more time, that should finish these chickens off!" Boy was he in for a surprise.

"Tank it, then barrage zigzagoon with (scratch)!" Now we have them! Zigzagoon's tackle barely hurt Flare, and the rampage soon followed. By the time the youngster cried out for his Pokémon to flee, Zigzagoon had fallen, swirling marks in his eyes.

"That's it!" Called the other youngster. "The winner is…" our ref sweat dropped. "Uh, I'm sorry I didn't ask your name."

"Crap that's right, I completely forgot to introduce myself, sorry that was rude of me." I apologized. "My name's Brendan, Brendan Maple."

The two youngsters went wide-eyed, and the one kid nearly dropped his pokéball after returning his Zigzagoon. "Maple, as in the newest Gym Leader NORMAN Maple?" My opponent asked. "Yeah…he's my dad." I replied with major hesitation.

"W-well… it's no wonder you lost Joey! You went up against a Gym Leader's kid." The kid who refereed for us started laughing his ass off at this statement. "Shut up Johnny! It's not like you knew who he was either!" Joey huffed.

The trainers turned to me and said in near unison, "We're Joey and Johnny Walters!" Joey then asked me, "How'd you beat me so easily? Your Torchic barely attacked Ziggsy until the end of the battle. You must've had that Torchic for years if it's that strong…"

"Actually, I've only had Torchic for like two days? Yeah, about two days." I nodded. The Walters brothers looked shocked at this statement. "As for how I beat you so easily, it's a simple matter of strategy. You made the mistake of only relying on attacks instead of using a mix of damage and status moves. You need to use your Pokémon's moves to their fullest." I explained. "I had Flare use (Growl) a ton to lower your Zigzagoon's physical attack power, to the point where his attacks barely hurt."

"Whoa, guess I have a lot to learn. You must be an expert trainer, could you teach me and my brother, please!?" Joey practically begged. "W-woah, hold on. I only just got my trainers license yesterday. I just know a lot about battle theory, I'm just starting out on my journey… sorry but I'm not your guy."

"Aww man." Joey moaned. "Well thanks for the pointers, good luck on your journey!" The brothers chimed. "Thanks! Keep training and you'll get stronger." I said getting ready to continue on to Petalburg. Suddenly my alarm went off.

Sanguine crawled out of my bag where he had been napping. "Dad, what's that ringing?" He groaned. "Hey San, guess what, you are officially three months old!" I exclaimed.

At this Sanguine snapped to attention. "Yay! I'm old enough to battle! I am invincible bitches!" Sanguine shouted. I gave him the evil eye and he calmed down a little, but he was still very excited.

"What's that Pokemon?" Joey asked. "Oh this is my first Pokémon Sanguine, he's an Axew." "Oh, he looks so cool! Where'd you get him?" Johnny asked. "He was a gift from my grandparents, but Axew are normally found in Unova. Also this isn't what an Axew typically looks like, San is one in a million."

"Oh wow, well then you're certainly a lucky guy." Joey murmured in wonder. "Good luck out there! C'mon Joey, we gotta get home, we promised mom we would be back before dinner tonight." Johnny said.

"Yup, see ya 'round Brendan! Joey yelled back.

"Alright gang, let's get going, just a little further and we're at Petalburg!" I said, encouraging my team to move forward.

About 2 hours later. 12:08 pm HST

After traveling and battling for an hour and a half more, we came to a clearing about 30 minutes away from Petalburg. I set up my cooking supplies and started on lunch for me and the team. I then began to share my travel and battle plan while cooking.

"Alright gang, here's the plan! Flare you and Dokuga, if she's willing, are going to be battling with me against my dad when we get to Petalburg. Then we'll head to Rustboro and challenge the leader there. From what I remember Rustboro has a rock type gym so San and Dokuga will be our aces there. No offense Flare but as it stands we're screwed if it comes down to you battling at Rustboro, since you're weak against rock types, and have nothing to counter them yet."

"Fair, but also please be less blunt next time." Flare requested. "Alright, sorry my bad. What do you two think?"

"Fine by me!" Dokuga exclaimed, clearly excited that her thirst for battle would be slatted. "I wish I could be a part of the first Gym battle…" Sanguine grumbled. "But I'm/you're not quite strong enough yet." Sanguine and I said at the same time.

"Don't worry buddy, you'll get your chance in Rustboro." I reassured him. Soon after lunch was done and an hour later I had everything cleaned and packed. Finally, another half hour later, we reached Petalburg.

"Alright we finally made it!" I exclaimed, Dokuga nodded and Sanguine cheered at my statement. After about an hour spent between the Pokémon center and the Pokémart (it turned out that Jeremy the Oldale Pokémart clerk had a brother working here), my Pokémon were all healed and my supplies had been restocked. At 2:20 in the afternoon, I stepped inside my dad's Gym.

When I first walked in dad was talking to a youngster trainer, giving him advice after the trainer lost a battle against him. "Don't worry too much about your loss, just keep with your training and you should be able to overcome any challenge that comes your way!" He encouraged the kid. "Thank you sir, I really appreciate the advice!" The kid then turned around to leave. When he saw me he said, "Careful, he's really strong."

"Thanks, I'll keep that in mind." I said laughing. The kid gave me a look like I was crazy, then gasped when I turned to face my father and said, "Hey dad!"

"Kiddo, It's great to see you! How's the journey going?" He asked. "Pretty great, has Gene told you what starter I chose?" I asked him.

"Nah, not yet, I'd prefer to have as much of your team be a surprise when we battle. Although, I can guess that you caught this one recently…" he said, gesturing to Dokuga.

"Yep, she's from a pack that attacked Gene, and then me." I explained. As I spoke my dad had a fearful expression, but before he could interrupt, I said, "Long story, ask mom. But long story short, she got separated from her pack, it's kinda my fault, so she is traveling with me until we can find her pack."

Dad facepalmed, sighed, and finally said "Arceus, now I know how my parents felt…just promise you'll be careful, don't do anything stupid?"

"…I will make no such promises…" I replied.

"Welp I suppose that's karma, just…just try to be careful. Please for your mother and my sakes?" dad asked.

"I will try, but from what I'm told I am very much your son. I just haven't had my own 'Ursaring incident' yet." I smirked.

"We don't talk about the Ursaring incident."

I began to laugh while remembering my grandparents' story of the time my dad saved a Teddiursa cub from a Beedrill nest, walked the teddiursa to its den, and returned it to its mother while covered in honey, which was pretty much the only reason why the Ursaring didn't maul him. My parents found the Ursaring and its cubs licking the honey off of him.

"Laugh it up now, but mark my words; one day you'll have your own Ursaring incident, and I will tell your kids that story so that they tease YOU mercilessly." Dad jokingly threatened.

"Eh it's fine I'll just make sure my incident is so cool the story will make me look like a badass." I replied.

"Whatever you say kiddo."

"Anyway, guess I should get to the reason I'm here. Gym leader Norman, I challenge you to a battle!" I exclaimed.

"Request denied." My dad deadpanned.

"What, why!?"

"Kiddo I want to be able to go all out against you, and right now that's not possible." He explained. "Why don't you challenge me when you have four Gym badges, that way we can both battle with everything we've got."

Reluctantly, I agreed. I knew deep down that dad wouldn't want to hold back, and at the stage both myself and my team are at, that wouldn't be possible. "Alright, but when it comes time, I won't be holding back." I conceded.

"I wouldn't have it any other way, son."

At was at that moment that I heard the Gym's door open. "Excuse me, is the gym leader here?"

Alright thank god I finally finished this one, idk why but these early chapters are fucking awful for me to get through. Guess my brain just really likes writing the action scenes, that come with the later chapters. Hope you all are enjoying this story, next time we're gonna get a short chapter from Wally's POV.
