Spencer woke up that morning, his head feeling particularly fuzzy, for lack of a better word. Both figuratively and literally, it turned out, but they'd get to the literal bit in a minute. There was only one reason why his head would be feeling like this, too much alcohol being ingested the night before. Something he always regretted the next morning, but he got caught up in the atmosphere last night. Bad, *bad* idea. Eurgh. His head hurt, and he proved his tongue around his mouth, his mouth felt like he had swallowed sand. Did he sleep with his mouth wide open or something?
He blindly reached for his bedside table and frowned when he didn't feel a glass of water. Great, he was going to have to actually get out of bed to rehydrate. He didn't want to get out of bed. Not before his alarm anyway, which hadn't gone off yet. His bed was nice and comfortable and warm. And getting up meant leaving all of that behind. Something he really didn't want to do.
But, of course, he now needed to use the bathroom. Which meant that getting out of bed was now a necessity. Throwing back the covers, he stumbled blearily across the room. He made sure to keep his eyes squinted, only opening them to the point that he was just able to navigate the floor. This way it would be easier to go back to sleep. As long as it wasn't on the toilet. Yes, he had done that before. Multiple times.
He quickly sorted himself out and quickly returned to his bed. Just as he snuggled back under the covers, having given up at the idea of getting a fresh glass of water, his alarm went off, blaring uncomfortably into his right ear. He groaned, reaching over to shut it off and knock it to the floor in one smooth motion. Except, of course that last bit had been an accident.
Great, that was going to annoy him and now he was going to *have* to get up. And, yes, sometimes Spencer Reid just wasn't a morning person. Something he was sure would shock his friends. Granted, he knew all the benefits of rising early (as long as you got a good night's sleep) and did try to abide by it. But, sometimes it just wasn't possible and he *was* human. No matter what Morgan liked to tease. And being human meant not liking getting up in the morning and desperately needing caffeine.
On that note, please let there be coffee in the machine already. He didn't think he could even do the miniscule steps required to sort it out.
He stretched his arms and went to run his hand through his bound to be tangled mess of hair (which was yet another thing he was going to have to deal with) when he stopped. That wasn't hair he felt underneath his hand. It was rougher than his hair and... fuzzy? That was definitely something new.
He grabbed a hold of whatever it was and tugged. It pulled free of his head easily and, in his shock, he let it fall to his lap.
Immediately, he was very, very confused.
"Okay, which one of you did it?" He asked, throwing the hat on his desk as he entered the office.
The first reaction he got from everyone was a blank look, which you tended to get when you made the dramatic entrance he did. But still, he felt like his greeting was justified. It wasn't every day that you woke up with a mystery hat on your head.
In fact, he was pretty sure that a good number of the world's population woke up with no mystery hat on their head. Which was incredibly boring, if you thought about it. But he would like boring right now.
He didn't even know why he asked the room at large because, let's be honest, there was really only one person it could be. Well, technically, two people *could* have done it but only one person would have. Trust him, he knew that much. And he was pointedly looking at the pair of them as he asked, for good measure. You know, to speed things up a bit.
Spencer would be the first to admit that he and Morgan were chaotic enough at the best of times when they were free from cases (and sometimes when they weren't) but when you mixed celebrating the closure of a very tough case with alcohol and their propensity for mischief? Well...
Morgan held up his hands in self-defense.
"I didn't do it this time."
Which was something he just didn't believe immediately. Which would when it was about Morgan and pranks? Though, he did seem very, very earnest right now. But did that really mean anything? Well, he did like to take credit for his pranks. And then never shut up about them...
"Wait, this time?" Reid backtracked, just realising what Morgan had said. "You've done something like this before?"
"Of course."
He didn't hesitate. Didn't think about it. Didn't even try to lie. He just said it straight away like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
"What have you done before?"
"Can we focus on the fact that you had a mystery hat on your head?" JJ stepped in before it spiralled out of control. "I mean, I thought you were a light sleeper, Spence."
"I am."
He had to be, what with his mother's propensity for wandering about in the middle of the night when he was younger. Of course, this was before he was an actual adult and didn't have access to alcohol for celebrations. Not that he had much to celebrate back then.
"Obviously not since I managed to get a hat on your head," Emily said smugly, causing everyone to turn and look at her.
"It was you?" Spencer demanded.
Emily immediately pointed a finger at Morgan.
"He dared me to!"
