Dying hurt, and so did coming back to life, often before healing was complete, but Jack had learned to ignore his pain, dismiss it as inconsequential, because as often as not, when he revived, he still had a situation to deal with. He couldn't afford to coddle himself, not when other lives might be in danger, so as soon as he was able to stand, he had to be on his feet, jumping back into the fray.
He'd grown used to the way things were, even if he didn't know why he couldn't stay dead. He'd had over a century to adjust, and to accept that no one cared about his pain. Why should they, when he quickly healed from any injury he sustained, even the fatal ones.
So it came as a surprise to revive from a nasty death and find himself cradled in strong arms, a reassuring voice telling him it was okay, he was safe, everything would be fine. He hardly felt he deserved such kindness and compassion, such consideration, especially when Ianto asked if he was alright, was there anything he could do to help. No one had ever done so much to ease his suffering.
