Chapter one:

Light goes to check out a university. He has graduated and wants to find the place that will help him be able to reach a status where he can find and get his brother back. He believes following the detective path will lead him in that direction. He pauses as he happens to notice someone that seems a little odd.

The other male is hunched, wearing worn shoes, baggy looking clothes, and his gaze seems to be guarded like he won't let anyone get any sort of information from it. He turns as he must have felt Light's gaze allowing their eyes to meet. He comes over as Light stands there letting him approach. He stops giving Light his personal space but close enough to talk. "Hello there. Are you looking into this place too?" He greets resting a thumb on his bottom lip as those eyes stare at Light. He has heavy bags under his eyes as if he hardly ever sleeps.

"Um yeah." Light confirms and the man hums in understanding.

"I see." The man turns to look to the university. "Depending on what you want to study I like this place. It offers a great program for those wanting to look into solving crimes. There is also some wonderful science classes here. If you want a more creative path like art this wouldn't be the place for you."

"Okay? Well thank you for that information. I'll keep it in mind for wanting to investigate things." Light tells the man not sure what to really say to that.

The man turns back to look at Light. "Ah an investigator. A great career choice." He nods his head. "I like that path myself."

This gets Light curious. "You do?"

The man nods his head. "Say. What is your name? You can call me Ryuga."

"Light." Light introduces himself and believes that this has to be a fake name though he wonders why this person would give him a fake name. He wonders what he has to hide. "But I can tell that isn't your real name."

The man stares at Light for a long moment before letting out a breath. "You catch on quick." He admits. "Okay my name is Ryuzaki. I just wanted to see how good your instincts were as well as if you'd call it out."

Light still gets a weird feeling about this man.

"Say. You wouldn't know Soichiro Yagami?" The man, Ryuzaki, requests making Light raise an eyebrow. "I heard he is a great investigator here. I am from out of town but I always liked his work."

Light really doesn't know what to make of this person. He wonders why hes still even talking to him. "Yeah I know him. But he tends to be busy with his police work."

"Yes of course." Ryuzaki turns to look to an older man who seems to be patiently waiting. "Well I must be on my way. Thank you for talking Light." He heads off towards the older man.

Light turns away thinking how weird that encounter was. He shrugs it off and heads to go check out the university more.

A month later….

Light turns as his adoptive father comes to the dinner table.

"I may be away from home for a bit." Soichiro informs his family who blink at hearing this. "I am working on a huge case and I will have to spend more time in the office for it."

"It wouldn't have to do with those murders that have been happening would it?" Light inquires remembering hearing about a serial killer in the downtown area.

"It is. And some big names are coming to help with the investigation. We have to put our best effort into this before more die."

"Well good luck then." Light's adoptive mother tells her husband.

Light turns to focus on his food not really thinking much about it.

"Say Light."

Light turns back to his adoptive father upon hearing his name.

"An assistant to a big time detective is joining and I managed to convince the team to let you on board too. What do you say? Want to try your hand at this case with me? You won't be doing any dangerous field work but it could be good experience."

Light blinks not having expected this to happen. "Sure." He agrees and shares a smile with his father.

"Great! I'll bring you with me tomorrow."

The family goes to their supper though Light gets excitement from his adoptive family about being able to join this case.

Light hopes that it all goes well. He also decides to look for some way to maybe get some extra information about the system that took his brother away from him. He feels excited as this might actually be his ticket to getting the information he needs.

The next day….

Light follows his father into the station and to the room where the investigation team is currently working. He glances around the room of adults and older men who are already hard at work.

Soichiro turns getting Light's attention who turns as well only to freeze at seeing a familiar face. "Ah Ryuzaki. Good to see you."

Ryuzaki walks in and gives a nod of greeting to Soichiro.

Soichiro places a hand on Light's shoulder. "This is my son Light. He will be joining the investigation. Light is the apprentice I was talking about."

"No need." Ryuzaki informs Soichiro resting his thumb on his bottom lip. "We met when looking at the same university."

"Oh." Soichiro nods to this. "Well that is great to hear."

Ryuzaki nods then heads to take a look at the work being done.

Soichiro turns to Light. "Look I know that he is a bit odd but a wonderful detective trusts him. So just try to not hold his looks against him."

"I won't." Light promises his father and the two of them head to start work.

A few hours later…

Light is allowed a break for lunch though instead of getting food he slips away to another part of the station. He heads for one of the server rooms which holds all the information this station has. He goes to the computer and is about to begin trying to search when a voice speaks behind him.

"Bold of you to try to access such information."

Light spins around finding himself looking at Ryuzaki who is standing in the room. "I just need to find something specific." He sees the other tilt his head in curiosity at hearing this. He sighs figuring that he won't get in trouble if he explains himself. "Soichiro isn't my actual father. I am adopted. And I have someone out there that I was taken away from that I promised I would find. However I haven't gotten anywhere and this could be my chance to find more information."

Ryuzaki is quiet for a few moments then comes closer to stand next to Light. "I understand." He does slightly surprise Light who wasn't fully sure that explaining this would work. "I am an orphan myself." He tells the other surprising him more. He looks to Light meeting his eyes. "However I must say that you won't get anywhere with the information here. They don't carry the information on any of that."

Light glances to the master computer in disappointment.

"I know of how you can get more information." Ryuzaki's words get Lights attention back to him in hope. "My mentor would be happy to help you out. If we have the right information then it shouldn't be hard to find your family member."

Light almost doesn't want to believe that this is actually happening. He decides to be cautious not sure that he trusts the other yet. "And how can I trust that this isn't some sort of trap?"

"You'll just have to trust me." Ryuzaki glances away with a thoughtful hum. "How about this? I talk to my mentor and maybe he'll take you under his wing too and you'll see that he is trustworthy?"

Light lets out a breath. "Let me think about it." He feels like this is all too good to be true.

"Of course." Ryuzaki turns to leave the room. "You know where to find me while were working on this case." He leaves after that.

Light looks down wondering if trusting this man with helping this search is the best option. He was given a fake name and he doesn't even know if Ryuzaki is still using a fake name or not. He doesn't want to get a false promise then is just used by someone else. He glances to the computer and can understand why there wouldn't be any information that'll help. He turns heading out of the room deciding to actually go get something to eat while he thinks this over. He wants it all to go smoothly and he really really doesn't trust this person yet. He also doesn't want to waste an opportunity where he might actually be able to find his little brother. He isn't sure what to do feeling so torn between the options.
