Chapter 3: Revelations
The girls had managed to get to the nurse's office, much to the shock of the woman in scrubs. The girls were covered in dust, and their hair was in much disarray. The one who had a sprained wrist was told to stay as the blonde refused to leave her nurse had told them it was fine for Yui to keep her friend company as she phoned a doctor to come to the school and check the wound out. Valentina laid on the school bed as Yui stayed by her side holding her non-injured hand. She grit her teeth in pain, as her wound began to trouble her as the adrenaline began to die down.
"Hey Yui," Valentina asked, looking at her friend. "Who were those people?"
Yui pursed her lips, not wanting to say anything. She cared about Valentina's safety, but she didn't want to drag her down with her if she found out what they actually were. She wanted to keep the one person she was ever able to speak to sane because she felt that she was slowly losing her sanity.
"I don't know what you mean," Yui said, as calmly as possible, not wanting her voice to crack in desperation. "Ayato handled you rather roughly, and you hit your head-"
"I know what I saw!" Valentina replied firmly, closing her eyes for a second not wanting to raise her voice. She took a deep breath, and squeezed Yui's hand in a comforting manner. "Don't lie to me Yui, I'm not the one. What were those guys? I remember my godmother telling me about the supernatural, but I never thought it was possible."
Yui brought the girl's hand, placing it in her lapt. She closed her eyes to try to find the best way to tell her. It may sound crazy, but she felt that she's known Valentina all her life just from spending what little time she had with her, and knew she didn't want to lose her. This may be the cause of how little interaction she's had with other humans after moving in with the Sakamakis, but Valentina made her laugh, smile, and even hope that everything would be okay. No one made her feel like this, not even when she was living with her father at the church. Yui looked at her, and all she knew was that she wanted to stay close to her no matter the repercussions. If Ayato reprimanded her for it, she wouldn't hesitate for a second to continue her friendship with Valentina even if Ayato tortured her for it. She realized that she couldn't leave this girl who mirrored her, who understood and acknowledged her. A teenage girl's heart is fickle in so many ways, that it seeks companionship, a friendship in another girl. An Yui was determined to keep her from harm's way.
"I don't know what you're talking about?"
Valentina was about to voice her concern when they heard a knock at the door. The doctor had arrived and the nurse told Yui to wait outside. Yui smiled and told her she would come back after they had healed her, letting go of the warm hand that had seemingly touched her. The doctor was young, and approached Valentina pointing a light in her eyes asking her what had happened. Before she could explain the nurse from before began to tie her free hand to the bed, she was about to ask what they were doing to her; but the nurse injected Valentina with a clear fluid that made her lose consciousness.
Valentina awoke and stared at her hands that were seemingly healed. There was loud jarocha music being played as she heard the sounds of harps and guitars; Yui smiled at her from a distance as she found herself back at home with a crowd of people clapping and cheering from afar as a crown of flowers was placed on her head. She wanted to call Yui's name, but a man next to her had grabbed her hand sliding a heavy gold ring on her hand, smiling as he called her.
"Valentina!"
She awoke gasping for air, Yui stood by her bedside crouching down beside her asking if she was okay, a worried look etched on her face.
"W-what happened?" Valentina was at loss for words, she touched her scalp remembering the dream that she had. She was back at home, the taste of sea salt lingered on her lips, and Yui was there clapping with her people, but that man. She didn't know who that man was? Or what he represented? She couldn't see his face, as it was hidden behind the setting sun, but all she could see was those pointy teeth as he smiled at her, sliding a pearl gold band on her ring finger. Her soul had felt at ease, it was comforting, but it had all been a dream.
"The doctor healed you. Your carpal bones had been strained, but he realized that they didn't need to sedate you, since your bones had surprisingly been set back in place. The doctor said you were lucky, but he asked me to tell you that you must not remove your cast until he sees you again in two weeks. He still wants you to wear the brace just in case. Do you want some water?"
Valentina nodded her head, at shock for words, as Yui held a glass of water to her chapped lips. She drank greedily, until she was fully sated. Her dominant right hand was held in a small sling.
"Thank you for staying with me," Valentina told Yui sincerely. "What time is it?"
"It's 2:34 AM."
Valentina chuckled, she had missed her other classes and had an hour left until her calculus class. It was the final class she had for the day, the one she would have with that sleepy individual. She grabbed Yui's wrist, and asked her what she knew of them. Yui became frightened, she had hoped that Valentina had forgotten about the incident, wanting her to believe that she had slammed her head, but the look of determination couldn't be swept from her face. She sighed, held her hand and told her the truth.
"The reason they're super fast, and strong, is that they're vampires. I don't expect you to believe it, I didn't the first time until they… well you know until they sucked my blood."
Valentina's eyes went wide, Shuu had licked her blood off, and she knew his teeth look pointier than an average human. She didn't think they were part of the undead, but looking at Yui's pained expression she knew it was true. There wasn't another logical explanation to Ayato's or Kanato's incredible speed or strength, it was inhuman. With her free hand she pulled Yui close to her as the blond fell to her bed. She hugged Yui, wrapping her in a blanket as they laid together on the bed. The blanket covering their heads as they hugged each other.
"What have they done to you?" Valentina whispered, gazing at the petite blond who was holding onto her as if her life depended on it. Yui's eyes filled with tears. She opened her mouth, but then closed it, unable to speak. She couldn't speak of it, it made her remember too much. Of things she was trying to forget, but couldn't because they had made such an impact on her soul. All she could do was hug Valentina tightly as her injured friend brushed her hair with her free hand soothing her.
"It's okay, I'm here. You don't have to say a word," Valentina murmured, as she hugged her. "I'll never leave you"
That seemed to calm her down a bit as they both quietly drifted to sleep in each other's arms. The nurse had walked in after an hour had passed by, and noticed the endearing moment between the two girls. She knew of course of what had happened, those who worked at the school knew of each student, but they had to turn a blind eye to a certain group of students that walked among the living. She had felt bad for them, but she would not meddle in their affairs or else she'd be putting her life at risk. She did hope they would make it through. She gently woke up Valentina and asked her if she wanted to attend the last period, because if she didn't, it wouldn't be a problem. She could write her and Yui an excuse note that would permit them to not attend the next class if they didn't feel well. Valentina thought about it, but then shook her head telling her that they would attend the last period of the day. The nurse nodded, and told her that she would be outside whenever they were ready to get to class.
Valentina laid in bed as Yui was curled right beside her. She brushed the hair out of her face, taking in what had happened. She peered at Yui and didn't notice until now how tired the blonde looked. She had slight bags under her eyes, and her body was quite frail. How long had she been living with them? Yui looked tired, unmoving as Valentina got up to get their things ready before the bell rang. She shook Yui gently, saying that they had five minutes before the last period. Yui groggily woke up and nodded while putting on her shoes. They left, bidding the nurse good-bye as they headed to the music room.
"I hope he's still there," Valentina admitted, unsure if the vampire had decided to stay. From how the classroom was left she guessed it was unlikely, but she didn't have the energy to go looking for him after having a dose of anesthesia still circling in her system.
"I'm sure he is." Yui answered, she knew Shuu was the least troubling of the brothers to deal with, and the least likely to do anything for that matter. Their suspicion was confirmed when they saw him sleeping in a pile of rubble and broken tiles.
"Okay Yui, you carry our book bags and lead me to the classroom. I'll carry sleeping beauty." Valentina grunted, trying to get the sleeping man to stand a little and try to get him to lean on her back. She was not letting Yui help her drag a 6 '0 foot man to class, she knew the blonde would blow out her back doing so. Valentina was around 5'7, she'd have a better chance logging him up on her back. Her knees were about to give out until they had arrived at her class on time. Students gave them weird looks at giving a sleeping Shuu a piggyback ride, but Valentina had ignored it. She was grateful that her teacher had helped her seat Shuu at the back of the class, as he sat right next to her for calculus. Yui handed them their bookbags and told her that she would meet her outside of her classroom once the bell rang to help her with Shuu. She waved Yui good-bye and sat in her seat as Shuu's head fell on her shoulder. She grew irritated that the sleeping blonde hadn't said a word throughout the whole ordeal, even after carrying him up a flight of stairs and still having traces of anesthesia left in her body. If anyone should be taking a nap it should be her. Shuu's hair was tickling the side of her face, and she caught a nice mild scent coming from him. She wanted to push his head to the side, but the edge of his mouth was seemingly scraping her shoulder as if he was threatening her. Class had started and everyone was engrossed in the lecture. She wanted to say something but decided against calling attention to an evidently hungry vampire. She held her breath, waiting for him to sink his jaws in her, but he blew cold air in her ear.
"You lewd woman," he whispered huskily in her ear. "Were you expecting me to bite you?"
Valentina's face went beet red at the accusation. She pushed his face off her, and sloppily jotted down notes in her workbook. She couldn't hold a pencil with her dominant hand, and would have to use her left one in the meantime. Shuu smirked, and let his head fall on her shoulder again as she sat straight in her chair. This time he just inhaled her scent, she smelled of cinnamon and freshly picked citruses. It was intoxicating, but he didn't have the energy to lean down and bite her. Not that she would let him anyway, unlike Yui she wasn't timid or meek. Her aura emitted was strong, and she was more of the troublesome woman he'd rather not have to deal with. But he did like to see her expressions, they were more lively. It made it worthwhile to tease her. He noticed her eyes getting groggy as the lecture continued. Her head had leaned on him completely, and she fell asleep. She was warm and her heartbeats were slow and steady, he caught himself falling under a spell too. Indeed, she was troublesome.
When Yui's class had finished, she went and borrowed a wheelchair from the nurse's office. She walked into an almost empty classroom with the sleeping duo being the only ones there. She saw Valentina gently sleeping on Shuu whose head fell on top of hers. They looked so comfortable and relaxed that she didn't want to wake them. Classes had ended and she knew Reiji was not the type of man to wait for them. If they didn't arrive soon, the limo would leave without them, and she wouldn't have the strength to carry Shuu even a block away from school. She gently shook Valentina's shoulder and the girl immediately awoke, she quickly flinched and Yui apologized for waking her, but told her that classes had ended. Valentina nodded, removing herself from Shuu's nuzzled head. Her and Yui picked Shuu up and placed him in the wheelchair. Valentina thought it was good thinking of Yui's part, she didn't think she could carry his heavy ass again.
"This man sleeps like a rock."
Yui agreed, pushing the wheelchair. Nothing could really get Shuu to move, not even the smell of blood. Even then he was too lazy to even want to lift his head and drink which was good on her part. She didn't really have to deal with Shuu unless he was really hungry. Valentina accompanied her outside and Yui noticed the limo from the corner of her eye. She told her to wait for a moment as she would quickly drop Shuu off in the car. Valentina nodded, waiting on the bench patiently not knowing which car Yui was taking the sleeping blonde too. She pulled out her phone to text Alberto and asked where he was parked before she could come across Ayato.
Reiji saw Yui pushing the good for nothing, he grew irritated at having to be seen in public with him. He advised Yui that if Shuu was too lazy to walk, she should leave him where she found him. Yui nodded hesitantly telling him that she was going to leave the wheelchair with a school officer. He instructed her to do it quickly because they would leave in no less than five minutes, with or without her. Yui quickly left, handing the chair to a hallway aide. She went to the side of the school where Valentina was sitting, and she told her that her ride was here.
"I'll see you mañana okay?" Valentina got up and hugged Yui, who she easily towered over.
Yui nodded her head, not wanting to leave and she clenched her eyes tightly at what awaited her back at the manor.
"Bitch-chan~" a velvety voice called, a young guy appeared before them removing his fedora hat and placing it on his chest. With his left arm he pointed to the side of the school. "You know Reiji doesn't like to be kept waiting."
Valentina narrowed her eyes wondering who he was calling a bitch? He looked awfully familiar, and then she realized he might be Ayato's brother, twin even. His eyes were a beautiful shade of emerald and they were sly like a cat. He stared at her with great interest. In a second he took his hand in hers and planted a kiss on her bruised knuckles, his lips were cold as ice. She shivered a bit as he gave her a devious grin.
"Quelles mains délicates, que s'est-il passé qu'ils ont meurtri comme des pêches?"
She was surprised that he spoke French with a smooth Parisian accent. He had asked her how she had bruised such delicate hands, comparing her hands to a peaches skin. She had replied in perfect French that she was caught in an altercation with a crazed bamboo. That earned a chuckle from the man, and she pulled her hand back.
"I'll be right there Laito," Yui said, hoping that he would give them space. Laito continued to stare at them unmoving. Yui realized he wasn't going to let them talk, so she took off her shawl ready to give it back, but Valentina shook her head and told her to keep it for a while.
"It gets pretty chilly here, it's good wool so it'll keep you warm," Valentina said, wrapping the cloak around the girl's shoulders. Yui smiled at her in gratitude, and Valentina lowered her head and kissed her good-bye.
"Au revoir," she told Laito icily narrowing her eyes at him, as he placed his fedora on his head. His eyes glowed as he watched her walk away. Yui had turned around ready to walk towards the limo, her cheeks tinted a rosy pink as she clutched the shawl around her protectively. She quickly took a seat beside the window, placing her book bag next to her. There were fewer people inside, but she didn't want anyone sitting next to her. The ride was silent until Laito had lamented about not introducing him to her friend. She decided to remain quiet as the redhead in front of her continued to complain.
"What's her name Bitch-chan?" Laito asked coyley, he turned to his left and then asked Reiji who was sitting poised with a slight look of irritation etched on his face at what had transpired today. Laito raised an eyebrow in amusement, he had heard of the destruction of the music room, but he didn't get to see the damage his two brothers had caused. He didn't know what had led them to fight, but Kanato and Ayato were both short fuses. Knowing Reiji, they were probably carrying out their punishments chained in the dungeon.
"You know I'm not one for rumors, but there was an incident that occurred at the school cafeteria earlier today." Laito hummed, watching in pleasure as Yui fiddled with her hands nervously. "It's been spreading like wildfire, but apparently a certain girl had managed to punch our dear brother in the face."
"Will you shut up!" Subaru growled, annoyed that he had to hear about the stupid incident. Everywhere he went, there was someone whispering about it in every corner of the school. He could care less if someone had finally put Ayato in his place.
"Aww Subaru don't be such a bore." Laito said, waving his hand absentmindedly in the air, "I was just wondering if it was her?"
"Who cares?" Subaru said, someone with an ego as big as Ayato's wasn't going to let the person who humiliated him get away with it. "If she is, she's dead meat."
Yui gasped, "Please, it was a misunderstanding! She didn't mean to do it." She looked at Reiji hoping that he would be the one to prohibit Ayato from hurting her.
"Aht, aht, aht," Laito smirked, pointing his finger at her almost as if to reprimand her. "The one you should be begging to spare her life isn't him. When a vampire has a target, no one from our kind shall interfere unless that person is of value to us."
Yui squeezed her hands tightly, the ends of the cloak entwined in her fingers. She tried her hardest not to let the tears spill from her eyes.
"Aww Bitch-chan I just adore when your heart palpitates like that," Laito purred, setting his hand on his chin pleased at her reaction. "We are friends Bitch-chan, I wouldn't mind helping you convince my brother to let her live even if it's just for a bit longer. Frankly, it would be cruel for Ayato to kill such a person who hasn't been nearly tainted enough. Death would only serve her as an easy way out."
"That is enough Laito," Reiji interfered, pushing his glasses up. "I advised Ayato to let her be, she's the niece of a foreign politician."
Laito shrugged, staring at his nails in nonchalance, "not like that's ever stopped any of us before."
"She carries magic," Shuu grunted, annoyed at having to hear their voices over his music.
Laito's eyes went wide in surprise, "Now that you mention it, her aura was different." He cracked an eerie smile at Yui, "I guess you should be thanking Reiji. Your friend is safe from the wrath of our brother, at least for now."
Subaru snorted, it wasn't like Reiji was guaranteeing her safety either. Knowing him, he'd probably keep her alive just long enough to dissect her and study her for his twisted experiments.
"You were hiding that part from us weren't you Reiji." Laito leered at him. "If she is some magical being she keeps it very well hidden. I guess she's free game until you get sick of her."
Reiji sighed, "I don't know what you're referring to Laito."
"Don't play coy now Reiji, unlike my brother I'm okay with sharing."
Yui became alarmed at the insinuation. This is what she had feared. She didn't want Valentina to be wrapped up with these people. Her look of worry was not unnoticed by Laito who continued to press her for information, but it hadn't lasted long as they arrived at the manor. Yui quickly got off as everyone had disappeared. She entered the big doors of the manor and wrapped the shawl tightly around her, nervous at what awaited her. She swiftly made it to her room undisturbed, and sighed in relief as she plopped on her bed. She grabbed the end of the shawl and rubbed it on the side of her cheek. It was really soft, and warm. When she held it near her face it had a pleasant scent to it. She would have to give it back to her tomorrow and find a way to warn her about the brothers.
Yui knew that Shuu and Subaru would mind to themselves, but the triplets were a different story, even Reiji who Yui suspected had ulterior motives. She shivered at the thought, if Reiji did find a slight interest in Valentina it would be dangerous. Remembering how he had tricked her into drinking poisoned tea. The feeling had been awful. She had felt excruciating pain and she was certain that she would have died at that moment if it wasn't for the serum he gave her.
She bit her nail, she couldn't lie here and do nothing. Yui got up, and sat at her desk. She was going to try and write Valentina a letter, and either find a time to give it to her or stick it in her locker to warn her about them. The only thing that made Yui nervous was that if the brothers found out what she was doing, she'd be in deep trouble. As Yui sat at her desk, she was curious about what the brothers had meant about magical beings. Valentina didn't look like anyone out of the ordinary, she wasn't a vampire that much was certain. Whatever she was, human or not, she didn't deserve any of this.
There had been a knock at her door and Yui quickly hid the letter underneath her books. It was the butler who told her that dinner was being served and that her presence was required. Yui replied that she'd be on her way as the creature excused himself. Yui quickly changed, and she walked to the dining room without running into trouble. She was the last one to arrive and took her seat next to Ayato. Shuu who sat in front of her was asleep, his food remained untouched. She was hesitant to talk to Ayato, and decided to stuff her mouth so she wouldn't say anything that could potentially irritate him.
"Yui, your manners are quite deplorable," Reiji stated, keeping his eyes on his plate as he cut his steak neatly. She blushed, it may have been a bit excessive; her cheeks had swelled up a bit from the food that remained in her mouth. She swallowed, but she started to cough; embarrassed she drank some water, and placed her hand to her mouth. She found herself not able to stop the coughing fit, until Ayato patted her back in solid swift motions that she found herself able to steady her breathing.
"I'm sorry," Yui squeaked, not sure who she had directed it to. Ayato just responded with a grunt, clearly irritated.
"Bitch-chan you should slow down, unlike us, your food doesn't run away," Laito chuckled, peering over from his seat as he sat next to Ayato. "Say brother, who was that girl from earlier who I keep hearing so much about?" Everyone had stopped eating. Ayato growled at the jab his brother had directed at him.
"No one," he said through gritted teeth. He looked over at Yui and ripped the shawl she had kept from her. Why was she still wearing this? Yui protested, asking him to give it back. She stood up to try and snatch it, but Ayato leaned back holding it high above her reach. Reiji had voiced his disapproval at the lack of manners being shown at dinner, as Laito had plucked the wool from Ayato's hand and sniffed it in bliss.
"Smells like citruses and the warm ocean breeze," he purred, wrapping the cloak around his neck. He eyed Yui, daring her to take it from him, much to her displeasure. Ayato snorted, not caring if Laito took it, better him than Yui having it. He didn't like it when she smelled like another person, even if it was another girl.
"If you ever need help catching the little minx, I wouldn't oppose lending a hand or two," Laito chuckled, touching the ends of the shawl.
"She belongs to me!" Kanato replied irritated, quickly reaching for the piece of clothing which he felt he should possess. "Teddy and I saw her first!"
Laito swerved his brother's grasp turning to his left, "my I didn't think we were claiming already. From the looks of it almost everyone wants a piece of the pie." He looked at Reiji, and then at Ayato. "Some for different reasons of course."
Reiji was quick to shut down Laito's instigation. It was true that he planned on running a few tests on her, having a suspicion of what she could be. However, unlike his brothers he would rather not indulge in their petty arguments.
"Aww but Reiji, you can't say you weren't captivated in the slightest. If you plan to dismember her, might as well take a look at those long legs that she possesses." Laito purred. "They make you want to bury your face in, and that's better than any scientific investigation."
"Shut up you fucking pervert." Subaru voiced his disgust as Kanato slammed his fork on the table, causing Laito to swiftly move his hand away before it could be mutilated by his older brother. Reiji scolded Kanato for ruining the mahogany table as the fork had been tightly rammed into it.
"I could care less what happens to the Jalapeño," Ayato assured, aggressively biting into his steak ignoring his brother's outbursts. "I just want to see her five feet under." It had irked him that the Tableware Otaku prohibited him from harming her, just because she was the niece of some politician. It didn't make sense, people of a much higher status have disappeared before, and no one's batted an eye. He didn't see what made her the "exception." He didn't care though, not like he was going to listen to Reiji anyway. Next time he saw her, he'd make sure to scare her into kissing the floor he walked on, and maybe he would reconsider sparing her worthless life.
"Now, now. It wouldn't be much fun if she's dead." Laito explained, sipping his red drink cautiously as Reiji's familiar tried to take the tableware that had been viciously wedged into the table. "I still want to know what she is."
"What the hell are you talking about?" Ayato asked, "She's a worthless blood-bag."
"That's where you're wrong." Laito said, putting his empty glass down. "If it wasn't for Shuu letting the cat out of the bag, I wouldn't have guessed it myself."
Ayato's eyebrows furrowed in confusion.
"She carries some form of magic," Laito said, placing the shawl around his nose seemingly deep in thought.
Ayato's eyes narrowed in surprise, "You scheming prick!" Sending his older brother a pissed look as Reiji continued to ignore him, eating his food in silence. Politician's niece, his ass. Reiji could give two shits about that, no wonder he told him he couldn't touch a single hair on her body. The creep was going to be the one to literally dissect her. Ayato chuckled darkly, alarming Yui next to him. Maybe he should've just killed her when he had the chance, at least he was merciful enough to give her a quick death. His older brother was a different story everyone knew that Reiji's test subjects didn't last long. Depending how interested she kept the Tableware Otaku decided how long she would live. Of course, that is if she didn't go insane like the others and kill herself.
Kanato had snatched the shawl from Laito's possession, annoyed that they were discussing his toy so freely at the table. "I tasted her blood first, therefore she belongs to me!" Kanato stated, glaring at his brothers as he placed the cloak between Teddy and him.
"It's not like you marked her," Shuu sighed, earning some amused and annoyed reactions from his brothers.
Reiji began to mockingly clap. "My my, is this worthless waste of space finally accepting some form of a challenge."
Shuu sighed, not bothering to open his eyes, "I don't intend to partake in anything."
"Right when the going gets tough, you run away with your tail tucked between your legs. You are an absolute disgrace." Reiji said with a straight face dabbing a napkin to the edge of his mouth in emphasis.
Yui began to fidget uncomfortably as she caught Shuu glaring at Reiji from the corner of his eyes. She sensed that Laito's laughing was a way to diffuse the tension between the two eldest brothers but she had to internally facepalm when he added fuel to the fire.
"I guess Shuu wants a piece too, it's not too late to stake a claim Subaru."
"Leave me out of this," Subaru growled as he got up to leave not wanting to hear anymore of this.
"If you're interested in a little game I suggest you stay," Laito advised, as Subaru sneered at his lecherous grin and disappeared. "I guess that just leaves five."
"Make that four." Ayato stood up and threw Yui over his shoulder causing her to yelp. "Whoever ends up with her better put a muzzle on her. If she ever disrespects Yours Truly again I won't hesitate to kill her." He warned, leaving the overbearing room, he could let his brothers fight for her for all he cared.
"So what should it be?" Laito asked, smiling cunningly at his brothers. "I do like a good game."
"Simple," Reiji said, eyeing each of them. "It's just like hunting for mere prey. Whoever enters her home and marks her, owns her, and can do whatever they want to her." He specifically emphasized on doing it in the distance of her home. He could do without picking up after his brothers.
Laito raised an eyebrow, it sounded simple enough, any of them could break into her house and claim her. "So it has to be within the safety of her home, my you're twisted Reiji." Laito laughed, already imagining the look on the girl's face of finding an intruder inside her home.
Shuu ignored his brothers and groggily rose from his seat. If Reiji made such a simple task sound easy, that wouldn't be the case.
"Leaving so soon?" Reiji asked in feint surprise. Shuu didn't reply and left the table so he wouldn't give his brother the satisfaction. He knew that something like this was bound to happen and he wanted no part in it.
"Well I guess that just leaves us," Laito grinned, getting up from his seat. "No hard feelings if I catch her first, I did say I was willing to share." He disappeared leaving Reiji and Kanato.
"Will see," Reiji smirked, as he began to pick up the tableware. He held up a sharp knife and looked at his reflection. His brothers wouldn't beat him in this one, he knew that Shuu had a hint of interest even if he had denied it. Nothing could get past him, he had learned from a young age to always observe the eldest. How his pathetic mother made him look up to the failure as an exemplary figure. He hated that, he'd make sure to take her away from Shuu like he had done with the others and maybe she'd be of some use to him.
Kanato gripped Teddy in annoyance at his brothers who had defied his claims he had on her, whatever task it was he'd show them. He teleported to his room, and walked to his balcony that overlooked the garden where the sun had begun to rise. He placed Teddy on the balcony facing him.
"She's been causing us a lot of trouble already, right Teddy." Kanato held the cloak in his hands, holding it to his nose. He could smell everyone who had touched it, but that scent of hers had lingered on it. Kanato decided that her scent was the best that he had come across and that keeping her encapsulated in wax was now out of the question; since the wax would evidently seal it. Though he would've liked seeing Valentina in a beautiful lifeless doll-like state, he did enjoy her little outburst against his brother. Unlike the other brides he's come across, Teddy had agreed with him that she seemed the most competent.
"Ne Teddy this is difficult," Kanato confided in his stuff bear. "My brothers never play fair." He began to pace around the balcony as the bear stayed perched on the ledge. Kanato wrapped the shawl around his shoulders and told Teddy that he was diffusing the horrid scents of the pervert and the stupid bride. He had sent out a familiar to try and locate her, but he was thinking of the best way to lure her before his brothers beat him. He stopped in his tracks and smiled eerily.
"Teddy, you're a genius!" He grabbed his bear and walked out of his room. The hallways were long, but he had come to the designated room and listened, hoping to hear just the sound of one person. He had opened the door and found Yui by herself sprawled on the bed unconscious. He peered curiously as the scent of blood clung in the air. He felt his throat go a little dry, he hadn't had a sip of blood in awhile. He found himself staring at her, looking at the rough bitemarks his brother had left on her neck. He lowered his head, his throat was awfully parched, but when he caught a look of the figure and saw sparse blonde hair instead masses of dark curly hair he slapped the annoying bride across the face. Remembering how her mere presence annoyed him.
"Ne Teddy, I wish she was here instead of this worm," Kanato grumbled, as Yui remained unconscious even after her cheek started to swell. Kanato walked around the room, looking over her desk that had a neat stack of books in the corner. He noticed a thick piece of paper sticking from a biology textbook. Curiously he pulled it out and was surprised to find an unmarked envelope. Kanato ripped it open and smiled darkly as he read it. Maybe the bride wasn't as stupid as he thought she would be.
"She's quite pitiful," Kanato giggled, at Yui's attempt to warn the girl. He sat at her desk and ripped the letter into pieces letting it burn in his hands, wiping his hands clean of ash. "Hmm now what do frivolous mortals like to do?" Kanato tapped his lower lip deep in thought, trying to see what he would write. "Teddy, what do you like to do when you spend time with me?" Kanato stared at the bear who sat on the desk, its head limping to the side. "Aw yes, I like doing that too." Jotting what he wanted to say down, the pen flowing effortlessly on the sheet of paper. He placed the letter in a new envelope and licked it shut, placing it in the biology textbook hidden from view. He heard Yui stirring awake, and he got up from her seat and stood a foot from her bed.
"Kanato, is that you?" Yui groaned, holding a hand to her tender neck where Ayato had bitten her. She flinched and then touched her cheek, why was it swollen? Yui grimaced, it hurt. Did she unknowingly fall on her face after she had fainted?
Kanato smiled at her pained expression. "Yui do you know why I am here?"
Yui shook her head, alarmed at the situation. She was worried that Kanato had come wanting to drink some of her blood. She was already lightheaded from Ayato taking more of her blood than she was used to. He had made it known that he was angry that she had defied him at blushed remembering how he had kissed her bloodied mouth and made her swear that she would never do it again. She had caught Kanato giving her an utter look of disgust.
"Refrain from having perverse thoughts in my presence," Kanato mumbled much to Yui's humiliation. He sat at the edge of her bed, and told her she owed him.
"What do you want?" She asked nervously. "I can't give you blood Ayato already drank from me. I'm already feeling weak." Yui tried to put herself in a sitting position as her back hit the headboard.
"You're awfully conceited to think I came for someone like you." Kanato ignored the mention of his brother's name. "I want you to tell me something useful about her."
Yui gulped, not liking where this was going. She didn't want to throw Valentina to the wolves, afterall she was her friend, and Kanato wasn't the most sane of the brothers. He was irrational, had severe mood swings, and most of all unstable. Heck, all of them were, but Kanato was seemingly stuck living behind a child-like mentality while possessing the strength of a supernatural killer. His child-like facade was meant to fool, but Yui knew he was out to kill. The brothers regarding everyone who wasn't at their level as food, or objects. Yui knew her place, even if it hurt admitting it. What she feared, was that if Kanato were to get sick or annoyed of Valentina, she'd end up a dead broken toy. Or worse, she'd find her in the basement as one of his sick dolls dressed in white, preserved in cold wax.
"What is taking you so long," Kanato asked irritably, weren't they supposed to be close. He grabbed Yui's ankle pulling her from the bed, squeezing it, watching her contort in pain. "You're so selfish, trying to keep her all to yourself."
Yui screeched in pain, trying to kick Kanato with her other foot as her head hit the floor. "She's a dancer," Yui cried out, as tears began to stream down her face. Her vision was going in and out. "She's a ballerina," Yui groaned, "she can do pointe and other forms of dance." She felt that Kanato had loosened his grip and she fell in a heap on the rug, he crouched down to her level waiting for her to tell him more. "Her mother passed away, and she was sent by her uncle to live here."
"Who does she live with?" Kanato ignored Yui's blubbering face. She was honestly so pitiful to look at it, but he would let that slide.
"With two women."
"What do those people mean to her?" Kanato questioned, grabbing Yui's hair and pulling her up to his eye level, her face contorting in pain.
"They raised her, she sees them both as mother figures," Yui sobbed, trying to get Kanato to let her go. "One of them is her godmother."
He loosened her hold on her as she fell to her knees. She looked at him with fear in her eyes, he smirked enjoying the feel of anxiety he was able to get her to emit.
"Does she like sweets?" He asked innocently, holding his bear in curiosity.
Yui was taken aback. "I'm not sure," Yui responded quietly. She honestly didn't know, all she could remember was the chili powder that covered her fruits, but she worried that Kanato would grow irritated and kill her if she didn't tell him something. "I think she prefers spicy foods."
Kanato seemed to ponder in thought, and Yui couldn't bear to look at him. She wanted the Earth to swallow her whole. Her back broke in sweat as she waited for Kanato to sink his fangs in her, but he never did. She heard him leave the room and she curled herself on the floor and silently cried, praying that Valentina would forgive her.
