Chapter 4: The Case and the Call

William Murdoch sat at his desk in his office, poring over the files of a case involving the mysterious death of an accountant in a newly built employee housing complex. His thoughts, however, often drifted to London, where his wife, Julia Ogden, was working at a prestigious clinic, and their 2.5-year-old daughter, Susannah, was discovering the joys of life in the British capital.

He decided to call Julia, to share updates on the case and to hear her voice—a constant source of comfort.

"Hello, William," Julia's voice came through the line. "How are you?"

"Hello, Julia. I'm alright. Working on a case involving the death of a young woman at this new worker's complex. At first, it looked like an overdose, but now we're leaning towards murder."

Julia paused, her tone thoughtful.

"That sounds complicated. Any leads?"

"We found signs of a struggle and evidence suggesting the body was moved after death. We're questioning residents and trying to figure out who might've had a motive."

"Make sure you dig into the relationships between neighbours. Sometimes jealousy or hidden conflicts can lead to tragedy."

William smiled, always appreciative of his wife's sharp instincts.

"You're right, as always. How about you? How's Susannah adjusting to life in London?"

"Susannah's loving it. We went to the park today. She fed the ducks and played with some other kids. She's so social."

"That's wonderful to hear. I miss both of you so much."

"We miss you too, William. But I know how important your work is, and Toronto needs you."

William sighed softly.

"I know, but I've been thinking... maybe I could finally take a few days off and come visit you two in London."

"Really?" Julia sounded surprised, but her excitement was unmistakable.

"That would be amazing. Susannah would be over the moon, and I... well, I'd be thrilled to see you."

"I'll need to plan it carefully, but I think I can make it work. In the meantime, I'll keep you updated on the case. Your insights are always invaluable."

"Thank you, William. Take care of yourself, and remember, I'm always here to support you."

"I know, Julia. Talk soon."

After the call, William felt a renewed sense of energy. Julia's words reminded him of the importance of focusing on the small details and human connections in his investigations. With fresh determination, he dove back into the evidence, hopeful not only to solve the mystery of the young accountant's death but also to finally carve out a moment to reunite with his family in London.
