Chapter 15

"Santana, get up, baby." Brittany stated softly, rubbing her wife's back as she sat on the bed next to her. Santana exhaled in her sleep, but didn't wake up, she instead buried her head deeper in the pillow, wiggling her butt to get more comfortable. Brittany smiled adoringly at how cute Santana looked, curled in a ball in the middle of their queen size bed, a pillow between her knees, her right arm outstretched, her left arm under her neck, and her hair flowing behind her on the lavender colored sheets Taylor insisted they buy for their bed.

Brittany rubbed her back again as she leaned down and kissed down her jaw.

"Santana, you have to get up for work."

Santana turned her head, sensing Brittany's lips close to her, and began to kiss the air, causing her wife to laugh.

"Where are your lips?" Santana then whined after a few moments.

Brittany ran her fingers through her hair as she leaned down and pressed her lips to Santana's, who tiredly kissed her back. "It's a little after six, you need to get up for work."

Santana finally opened her eyes and nodded. "Okay, is Taylor back with my mom yet?"

"No, they are going to dinner." Brittany informed her.

"Sky?" Santana then asked, blinking slowly to focus her eyes.

"Is right here." Brittany nodded to the side of the bed, where Skylar was standing, holding a stuffed animal, on her tiptoes to see her mother. She leaned down and picked her up, setting her on the bed in front of Santana, who tapped her lips, and smiled happily when Skylar gave her a kiss.

"Why didn't you go with your Buela?" Santana asked. Skylar stared at her before laughing.

"No." Skylar shook her head.

Santana sat up and allowed Skylar to crawl in her lap and smiled at her as the tiny Latina danced her stuffed moose in her mother's lap. "I called my parents and booked plane tickets for them to come next Wednesday." Brittany stated, standing up and pulling out scrubs for Santana, setting them on the bed. Skylar spotted her toy stethoscope and reached for it. Santana saw her reaching and grabbed it so she wouldn't fall off the bed and put it on her neck for her.

"Are we paying?" Santana asked, raising an eyebrow.

Brittany turned around and faced her, smiling at Skylar as she moved the dial over Santana's chest. "I paid, yes, and I used my personal savings."

Santana shrugged. "You could have used the checking account."

"My parents, my savings." Brittany shrugged. "Do you want to eat before you leave?"

"You cooked dinner?" Santana asked as Skylar continued to move the dial around her. Santana placed it on her wrist, right on her pulse point. Skylar frowned at her and shook her head.

"No mami." Skylar told her quickly. "Here." She stated, pressing the dial to her mother's chest again.

Brittany smiled and kissed the top of Skylar's head. "Yes, I cooked, and it looks like there's another Dr. Lopez-Pierce in the family." She laughed as Santana nodded proudly.

"I can totally see that." Santana agreed. "If she's not playing with her puzzles, she's playing with her toy medical stuff."

"Well since Taylor doesn't want to be a doctor, you may get this one to follow in your footsteps." Brittany winked.

"We'll see." Santana smiled. "What did you cook?"

"Sky and I made a pizza." Brittany stated, sitting on the bed and lifting Skylar in her lap. Skylar stared at her and immediately began to run the dial of the stethoscope over her chest instead as Santana got out of bed and stretched.

"Sounds good." She nodded. "I'm going to rinse off in the shower, I think I was sweating in my sleep, and I'll be down."

"Come on Sky." Brittany reached for her, but Skylar shook her head and hugged Santana.

"I can shower with her." Santana suggested as she got out of bed and laughed when Skylar smirked at Brittany and laid on Santana's shoulder. "She needs a bath for the night anyways."

Brittany laughed at the baby and nodded. "Okay, I'll warm up the pizza for you, do you want to take lunch to work or coffee?"

Santana laid Skylar on the bed and began to undress her, tickling her in the process.

"Coffee would be good, and maybe some fruit, we have grapes right?"

"Gwapes." Skylar nodded.

"Yep, we want gwapes." Santana winked at Brittany.

8pm

Taylor sat between Mrs. Lopez's legs on the floor in front of the fireplace, each of them holding marshmallows into the fire to roast. Skylar sat in Brittany's lap, straddling her while holding her tightly, peeking at her grandmother, who would wink at her occasionally and laugh when Skylar would frown.

"Then Buela said that we could come fishing with her and Papi, if you and mami said it's okay!" Taylor exclaimed.

"You and Santanita's permission was a requirement." Mrs. Lopez repeated.

"You know we own the cabin up here, and we plan on going for a week, the girls are more than welcome to join us, you and Santanita as well."

"Do you have a date planned already?" Brittany asked, lifting her marshmallow out of the fire and checking it, not wanting to make it too hot for Skylar. "Here Sky, Sky." She stated, blowing on the marshmallow and biting off a piece to give her daughter. Skylar sat up quickly and accepted the piece from Brittany and stared at it.

"You can eat it Sky, it's good." Taylor smiled as she lifted her own marshmallow.

"Blow on it first to cool it a little." Mrs. Lopez told her softly in Spanish, before hugging Taylor and kissing the top of her head.

Skylar smiled at Taylor, as Brittany turned her around in her lap, and pinched her cheeks. "That sounds fun, I'll check with Santana, and if our schedules line up we'll definitely go, if not, the girls are free to go."

"Cool!" Taylor screeched.

"More." Skylar tapped Mrs. Lopez on the arm and reached for her marshmallow.

Mrs. Lopez smiled and pulled a piece off to hand to Skylar, she blew on it softly, Skylar staring at her, before changing her mind and leaning back into Brittany. "You don't want my marshmallow anymore?" She asked her granddaughter.

Skylar looked up at Brittany as Mrs. Lopez dipped it in chocolate and held it out to her.

"Grab it Sky." Brittany coaxed. Skylar shook her head, and grabbed Brittany's arm, holding it up to reach for it. "You grab it if you want it." Brittany stated when Skylar stared at her.

"Momma." Skylar began to whine, hiding her face in Brittany's chest as she tried to force tears out of her eyes. "Momma, more."

"Grab it, Sky Sky." Brittany stated softly, rubbing her back. "Your Buela won't hurt you, if you want the marshmallow you need to grab it yourself, honey."

Skylar buried her head deeper into Brittany's chest, finally able to push some tears out as she began to cry loudly. Taylor reached over and rubbed her back. "It's okay Sky, Buela's super nice, and she always smells good, and she looks just like mami, you would like her if you gave her a chance."

"It's okay, Taylor." Mrs. Lopez laughed. "She's allowed to feel me out if she needs to, babies have their own personalities and feelings just like us, you can't push her to like someone, she'll come around when she's ready."

Skylar began to scream and kick her legs as she cried louder, mumbling 'more' in between her cries, tears free flowing now as she looked up at Brittany, who raised her eyebrow at the daughter. "I think it's time for someone to go to sleep, the cranky monster is coming out." Brittany smiled, as she began to shush Skylar while rubbing her back. "Taylor, you can stay up until 10pm tonight since your Buela is in town, but just tonight."

"Cool, let's watch a movie!" Taylor jumped up and ran over to the DVD collection.

"Okay, whatever you pick is fine." Mrs. Lopez nodded, watching Brittany stand up, Skylar still hiding her face in her chest. "Will you be coming back to join us?"

"No, I need to get some work done, Maria, I'm sorry, but I promise to have a black and white old cowboy movie marathon with you next week, you still like those right?" Brittany asked.

"Of course." Mrs. Lopez nodded with a big smile.

"Great." Brittany replied as Taylor came running back over and kissed Skylar on the cheek, wiping some of her tears away. "10pm, don't beg your Buela to stay up later."

"Okay." Taylor nodded as Brittany leaned down so she could kiss her on the cheek.

Brittany kissed her daughter on the forehead before heading upstairs with Skylar, who was down to a sniffle now. "Do you want to come lie down with me?" She asked her, walking into the master bedroom, she set her in the middle of the bed, kissing her on the forehead. "You are bratty like your mami when you're tired."

She laughed as Skylar laid down and stuck her fist in her mouth, staring at Brittany and beginning to cry again, who began to hum softly as she changed into a pair of pajama pants and a long sleeve t-shirt. She heard Skylar hiccup in between her screams and went to the bathroom and filled one of the cups with a little water.

She sat on the bed, rubbing Skylar's back as she hiccupped again, before sitting her up and carefully holding the cup to her mouth. "Drink slowly." Skylar continued to cry and shook her head before finally taking a few small sips, putting her little tan hands around Brittany's, an attempt to hold the cup herself. "There, all better." Brittany smiled, rubbing her back again. "Let's read a story before we go to sleep." She grabbed a book from the recliner and got comfy in bed, before reaching over and lifting Skylar in her lap, cuddling her close and kissing the top of her forehead as her cries calmed down and were now at a sniffle as she stared at her mother. "You have to be nice to your Buela." She told the tiny Latina when she locked eyes with her. Skylar shook her head quickly before resting it on Brittany's chest and starting to whine a little more. "You are so whiny tonight, Sky." She sighed. "Okay, pacifier just for a little bit." Brittany reached over and grabbed one and popped it in her mouth, looking at the clock to time how long Skylar would have it in, they were in the process of weening her off of it, especially before bed, Santana not wanting her to sleep with it in, or become solely dependent on it to sleep. She wiped her tears away and positioned Skylar so she was lying on her chest but still able to see the book.

Halfway through the book Skylar was fast asleep, holding Brittany's shirt tightly. She glanced down at her and ran her fingers through her soft curls before setting the book down and turning on the news. She was humming softly and rocking Skylar when Taylor poked her head in the room. Brittany quickly held up her finger to her lips so Taylor wouldn't get loud and wake her sister up.

"What's up honey?" Brittany asked.

"Can I sleep with you tonight?" Taylor asked. "Since mami is at work?"

"Sure," Brittany nodded. "Come on up at ten."

"Cool." Taylor ran over and kissed Skylar softly on the cheek before running out of the room. Skylar began to stir so Brittany quickly rubbed her back and shifted her so she could kiss her forehead and get her settled back down, which she quickly did.

2am

Brittany woke up quickly from Skylar screaming loudly as she began to cry, she quickly flicked the lamp on and looked over at the baby, who was lying between her and Taylor, on her back crying loudly, who was also in the bed and was startled awake from her sister crying. She quickly picked up Skylar, who was seemingly still asleep and started patting her back, kissing her on the forehead over and over until she finally started to wake up.

"Wake up, Skylar." Brittany stated soothing.

"Wake up, Smiley." She added rubbing her back and standing up to bounce her a little as she walked around the room, kissing her repeatedly all over the face. "Wake up, Sky Sky."

Skylar coughed as her big brown eyes popped open and she looked around frantically before clutching to Brittany when they locked eyes. "Momma." Skylar cried as she hid her face in Brittany's chest.

"You're okay, momma has you." Brittany told her kissing the top of her head and rubbing her back, glancing over at Taylor. "Are you okay, Tay?"

Taylor nodded and pulled her knees up to her chest. "Is Sky okay?"

Brittany sat back on the bed with her daughter, hugging her tightly as Skylar rested her head on Brittany's shoulder. "I think she had a little nightmare." Brittany nodded, checking her daughter. "Yeah, she wet herself too, I'm going to change her and be right back, go back to sleep honey."

Taylor stared at Skylar, who quickly stuck her own little fist in her mouth to soothe herself, tears still streaming out of her eyes. She kissed Skylar's wrist and smiled at her before wiping her tears away before Brittany stood up. "Be right back, Taylor."

Brittany walked to the nursery and turned on the lights, still staring at her daughter, who was staring back at her. "Momma."

"I'm not leaving you." Brittany assured her when she set her on the changing table. "I just need to get you a new diaper." She added softly, moving quickly around the room. She changed Skylar's pajamas and slipped her into her teddy bear fleece ones, she was in the process of picking her up back when Mrs. Lopez knocked on the door and stepped in.

"Warm bottle, a squirt of fresh strawberry juice inside." She stated handing Brittany the bottle. "I know that scream, Santanita used to scream in her sleep as well, this always worked for her, along with massaging the bottom of her feet."

Brittany accepted the small bottle, smiling at the slight pinkish tint. "You used the fresh strawberries in the fridge?"

Mrs. Lopez nodded. "Just one, a quick squeeze, just to sweeten the milk a little."

"Thank you." She replied, holding the bottle to Skylar's mouth and sighing in relief when she began to drink a little.

"Is this the first time she's woken up with a scream?"

Brittany nodded. "One like this, yes. The past couple weeks she's been waking up around eleven, she'll whine a little then soothe herself enough to go back to sleep. She's never screamed like this before, scared the crap out of me." She looked at Skylar, who was still holding her shirt tightly, her eyes fixated on Brittany.

Mrs. Lopez smiled. "She's looking to you for comfort, so I'll let you bond with her."

"Sorry she woke you." Brittany apologized as she followed the elder woman out of the room.

"No problem, I was up reading, so it's fine." She kissed Brittany on the cheek and rubbed Skylar's leg, before going back to the guest room.

Brittany nodded and walked back in the bedroom, she glanced at Taylor, and saw she was back asleep again, she realized Skylar had stopped drinking so she set the bottle down and moved to have the baby straddle her, but Skylar began to whine again. "Okay, okay, momma will hold you like this." She told her, cuddling her close to her chest so Skylar could still stare at her. She leaned against the headboard and used one hand to hold Skylar, while following her mother in law's advice and massaging the bottom of Skylar's feet hoping to lull her back to sleep.

8am

Santana quietly walked in the house and made her way straight upstairs, she peeped in at her mother and heard the shower running so knew she was awake. Her mother never slept a lot, even when she was growing up she would stay up late reading and still wake up early and get fully dressed, she would take a nap in the afternoons for two hours, then wake up completely refreshed. She walked in the bedroom, and smiled at the sight of Taylor curled in a ball fast asleep on her side of the bed, and Brittany sitting up with Skylar in her arms. Santana walked deeper in the room and noticed the bags under Brittany's eyes immediately as her wife watched the news in silence.

"Good morning." Brittany smiled.

"Good morning." Santana replied with a frown. "You look exhausted." She added, leaning down to kiss Skylar, who was awake as well, on the forehead. "Both of you do." She noted, pressing her lips to Brittany's tired ones.

"She was super fussy last night, so I put her to bed around 8 or so she slept in here with me, and Taylor, and woke up screaming and crying at two this morning, she won't go back to sleep now." Brittany yawned. "She's just been holding my shirt and staring at me, so I stayed up all night with her, she wouldn't let me put her down."

Santana stared at Brittany. "Seriously?" When Brittany nodded she reached for Skylar, who was fighting to keep her little eyes open, but reached out for her mother.

"What's wrong, amorcita?" Santana asked, sitting on the end of the bed and kissing her forehead softly. "Look how tired you look." She sighed as Taylor stirred and woke up. "Good morning Taylor."

"Morning mami." Taylor mumbled through her yawn before moving closer to Brittany, who opened her arm to her daughter, already expecting her to cuddle close.

"Morning momma." She added as Brittany hugged her and kissed the top of her head.

"Good morning, Tay." Brittany yawned.

"Taylor, I need to talk to your mom, why don't you go to your room and watch some cartoons." Santana suggested.

"Can we take Buela to the place that makes the really awesome french toast?" Taylor asked as she leaned against Santana's shoulder and kissed her on the cheek.

Santana glanced at Brittany, who's eyes were fluttering closed and shook her head.

"Not today, maybe sometime next week."

Taylor shrugged. "Okay." She hopped off the bed and ran out of the room happily. "I'm going to find Buela."

Santana stood up with Skylar, who was still staring at her. "Go to sleep, mija." She said softly, rubbing her thumb over Skylar's chubby cheeks, before gently running her hand over her face to close her eyes. Skylar cuddled closer to Santana's chest, and let out a deep sigh as she seemed to drift to sleep. "Go to sleep, B."

"You need to sleep, you just got home from working a twelve hour shift." Brittany shook her head.

"Lay down and go to sleep, I'm still going from adrenaline now."

Santana laughed softly, sitting in bed next to Brittany, who rested her head on Santana's shoulder while she stared at Skylar who was finally asleep in Santana's arms. Santana turned her head and kissed Brittany softly again. "Go to sleep babe."

"Thank you." Brittany nodded before shuffling to lie down, making sure to wiggle close to Santana's side, so her shoulders were touching her wife's thighs. Santana smiled at her and flipped through the channels on the remote, getting comfortable while trying to find something to watch on TV.

5pm

"Taylor, I've said stop three times, if I have to say it a fourth..." Santana snapped, turning to glare at her daughter. "What is with you today?"

Taylor shrugged and set down the wooden spoon she was sticking in the fireplace, turning red in the face before glancing at Skylar who was sitting in Santana's lap, holding her blanket tightly and staring at her grandmother, who was folding a basket of towels.

"I shouldn't have to keep repeating myself." Santana continued. "If you don't listen at home, I can imagine how you're behaving in school, no wonder you keep getting notes sent home, this is ridiculous, seriously."

Brittany cleared her throat, watching as Taylor wiped her eyes, a few tears pooling before beginning to play with the hem of her pants. Santana locked eyes with Brittany, when she heard her clear her throat, and saw in her wife's eyes she wanted her to lay off of Taylor, so she did.

"Mami, you don't have to do our laundry." Santana stated.

"I know, but you work in just a few hours, and Brittany is running around here after the girls, it's the least I can do before I start dinner." Mrs. Lopez stated. "I know Skylar was up all night, and Brittany needs the night off."

"Thank you Maria, we really appreciate it, but folding towels is one of Taylor's chores." Brittany smiled.

"Thanks Buela." Taylor said softly, chancing a glance at Santana, who was no longer glaring at her but running her fingers through Skylar's hair as the tiny Latina leaned back into her chest.

"Did you thank Buela for all the new gifts I saw in your room this afternoon?" Santana asked Taylor in a much softer tone.

"Si." Taylor nodded quickly, sniffing as Brittany handed her a tissue to wipe her tears away. "I thanked Buela at every store." She added in Spanish.

"Yes she did." Mrs. Lopez added. "She also thanked me for Skylar's gifts as well."

Santana set Skylar on the floor and watched her run over to her blocks and begin to play with them. Brittany got on the floor with her and pulled her daughter to sit between her legs as they began to stack the blocks together, Brittany kissing on her cheeks. Santana saw the heating patch Brittany had on her back when her shirt rose up so she quickly leaned forward and grazed her fingers over the patch before pulling her shirt down. After sitting up with Skylar all night at such an awkward angle her back stiffened up on her slightly. After Skylar was fast asleep, Santana carried her to her crib and put her to bed before placing a hot towel on Brittany's back, anticipating her being in a little pain, she then massaged her back slowly before going to sleep as well. When they finally woke up Santana put one of the travel patches on Brittany's back after they took a shower together.

"Taylor, come here." Santana stated, patting the space next to her on the couch. Taylor stood up quickly, smoothing out her black Hollister sweats, she played with the bottom of her matching long sleeve t-shirt as she walked over and sat next to Santana on the couch. She blushed when Santana kissed her on the temple. "Thank you for all of your help with Sky this weekend, momma and I really appreciate it, and I'm sure Buela appreciates all of your help as well."

"You're welcome." Taylor nodded softly as Santana wiped her tears away with the pad of her thumb.

"You know I don't like yelling at you, Tay, but you have to listen more, okay?" Santana asked. "There's no reason for you to stick that in the fire, when I ask you to stop doing something it's for a reason, honey."

"Lo siento." Taylor sniffled.

"Stop crying, Tay." Santana sighed as Taylor leaned into her embrace and allowed Santana to hug her and kiss the top of her head as she rubbed her side.

Taylor nodded and wrapped her arm around her mother's waist and hugged her tightly.

Mrs. Lopez smiled at the interaction and nodded in approval at her daughter's parenting, she then looked down as Skylar tapped her on the knee and held up a block to her. "Thank you, sweetheart." She beamed happily as Skylar blushed and ran back over to Brittany and picked up another block, she took a few steps closer to her grandmother but stopped and stared at her, debating if she wanted to give her another block.

"That's so nice of you to share, Sky." Brittany praised her and began to clap, Santana and Taylor joining in immediately, causing the baby to blush and turn a dark shade of red before running back to Brittany and hiding her face as Mrs. Lopez laughed.

"Slow and steady wins the race." Mrs. Lopez smiled as the doorbell rang.

Santana glanced at the clock before standing up. "You expecting someone, B?" Brittany shook her head and kissed all over Skylar's face before tickling her and flipping her over to sit in her lap again. Santana went to the door and opened it, revealing her father.

"Papi!" Taylor yelled happily, jumping off the couch and running right to her grandfather's arm.

He winked at his granddaughter before picking her up and spinning her around as he hugged her tightly. "Oh I'm miss you kiddo." He beamed as he kissed her on the cheek.

"Hola papi." Santana smiled as he leaned down and kissed her on the cheek. "I'll grab your suitcase."

"Nonsense." He shook his head. "I have it." He set Taylor down and picked up his suitcase along with two big gift bags and walked in the house.

Brittany jumped to her feet and hugged her father in law tight. "Mr. Lopez, so good to see you."

"We've been through this." He smiled. "Call me Rafael, or dad." He winked. "You're family, you've always been family, no need to be so formal.

"Sorry, Rafael." Brittany blushed. "How was your flight?"

"Great," He replied as he walked over and kissed his wife. "Hola Maria." "Hola Rafael." Mrs. Lopez smiled, hugging her husband tightly.

Mr. Lopez then kneeled down so he was level with Skylar, who was staring at him, while holding Brittany's leg. "I've heard all about you, little one." He smiled softly. "You are so cute, you look just like your mami did at this age." He added glancing up at his daughter. "I'm your Papi." He told her as he extended his hand to her.

Skylar laughed and reached her hand out as well, blushing when he grabbed the tiny hand and kissed it softly. "More." She then smiled.

"She's not so bad Maria." He teased his wife, who raised her eyebrow and playfully stuck out her tongue at her husband.

"The house looks great." He stated looking around the living room. "I'm impressed."

"Thank you." Santana stated as she sat on the couch.

"I have some gifts." Mr. Lopez stated, taking off his coat and setting it on the recliner, he grabbed the two gift bags and opened the first one, pulling out a bouquet of roses and handing them to his wife. "Mi amor."

"Thank you." Mrs. Lopez blushed.

"For Santanita." He then handed Santana a box. "For Brittany." He handed her a box as well before carefully folding the bag and setting it on the floor. Skylar stared at him and walked closer, mesmerized and curious by the bright colored bags. "I hear you like animals of all kinds and your favorite color is yellow." He tells Skylar, who smiles but doesn't get any closer, instead chooses to take a few steps back into Brittany's arms instead. He reaches in the bag and pulls out a big yellow and pink giraffe, that's taller than Skylar, laughing as her eyes widened and she ran closer to it, hugging it around the neck.

"Whoa, Papi, that's pretty cool." Santana smiled.

"What do you says Sky?" Brittany laughed when Skylar fell over trying to pick up the giraffe and bring it to show her mothers.

"Thank." Skylar whispered softly as Santana stood and picked her back up to stand on her feet.

"You're welcome, little one." Mr. Lopez winked at her. "Taylor, gosh, I think I forgot your gift." He frowned as he flipped the bag over and began to shake it.

Taylor shook her head slowly. "That's okay, Papi, Buela bought me a bunch of stuff yesterday, and you're here, so that's a gift." She replied.

"Whoa." Santana mumbled, causing Brittany to laugh and playfully smack her wife on the legs.

Mr. Lopez stood up. "Silly me, I left it outside, now I remember." He ran to the door, Santana's eyes narrowed at him the entire time, her parents were notorious for spoiling Taylor and whatever she asked for she got, so she was curious what message her mother passed along to her father.

Mr. Lopez walked in with a small black animal carrier and Santana's breath hitched as she leaned forward and whispered in her Brittany's ear. "Brittany, I swear to God, if there is a dog in that damn crate, them and the dog are on the first flight out of here and back to Lima." Brittany swallowed thickly but didn't reply, she instead turned and glanced at her wife, who was glaring at her father.
