Chapter 17

"Your father insists on carrying the luggage himself." Mr. Lopez laughed, stepping to the side as Mrs. Pierce walked in the house.
"Gam Gam!" Taylor screamed excitedly, waking Skylar, as she jumped off the couch and ran into her grandmother's arms. Skylar looked around with a scowl as Santana walked back in the living room, setting the phone down on the table and reaching for Skylar, who she knew would start crying at any moment, hating to be woken up suddenly from a loud noise.
"Mom!" Brittany smiled as her mother finally let Taylor go only long enough to hug her before hugging her granddaughter again.
Skylar sniffled and shifted in Santana's arm as the Latina bounces her a little and rubbed her back, smiling at Mrs. Pierce who walked closer to her. "Hi Mrs. Pierce, good to see you again."
"Same here, and look how big Skylar is getting." Mrs. Pierce beamed while staring at her granddaughter, who had a scowl on her face as she held Santana's shirt tightly, and buried her head deeper into her chest. After Santana and her mother in law exchanged kisses to the cheek, Mrs. Pierce kissed Skylar on the forehead, earning a mumbled no from the baby, who hid her face in Santana's chest.
"She's tired so she's going to be cranky." Santana laughed softly, running her fingers through Skylar's hair. "I'm going to take her upstairs to bed, B."
Brittany nodded before walking over to Skylar and kissing her cheeks, causing her to blush. "Good night Sky Sky."
"Tell momma good night." Santana told her.
"Night night." Skylar mumbled before glaring around the room, sighing when she laid her head back in the crook of Santana's neck.
"Night night." Brittany repeated to her with a smile before kissing Santana softly on the lips as well.
"Where's my granddaughters!" Mr. Pierce yelled while running in the house and catching Taylor who jumped in his arms, spinning her around.
"Hi Poppa!" Taylor smiled. "Sky just went to bed because she's tired and cranky."
"Hmmmm, I'll save some hugs for her tomorrow." He smiled, carrying Taylor over to Mrs. Lopez and kissing her on the cheek. "Maria, how are you dear?"
"Fine Tim, you?" Mrs. Lopez smiled.
"Surrounded by love!" Mr. Pierce bellowed as Mr. Lopez laughed.
"Well Maria, what can I do to help?" Mrs. Pierce asked.
"Donna, you just got in, don't worry about it." Mrs. Lopez shook her head. "I'm just doing some chopping and dicing."
"Well, let me wash my hands and help you." Mrs. Pierce smiled before glancing at Brittany. "Shouldn't you be packing?"
Brittany shook her head, sighing at her mother's tone and the way she looked at her over her glasses. "No, we are packed already, we leave tomorrow night."
"Hmmmm." Mrs. Pierce nodded before heading towards the kitchen with Mrs. Lopez as Taylor talked excitedly to her grandfathers.
Brittany took a deep breath and walked upstairs, she leaned against the doorway to Skylar's room and listened to Santana sing her to sleep, as she leaned over her crib. Brittany walked in after two verses of twinkle twinkle and grabbed the set of sheets from the rocker and made up the futon for Taylor to sleep on since the Pierce's would be sleeping in her room.
Santana turned and glanced at Brittany before kissing Skylar on the forehead and turning to help her with the bed. "My mom is pissed." Brittany sighed. "I can tell, she's mad we are going on the trip."
"Do you want to just cancel it?" Santana suggested. "We can plan another trip or just wait until Arizona and relax then."
Brittany shook her head as she left the room and came back with Taylor's teddy bear, setting it on the futon. "Honestly Arizona is going to be crazy busy for me, I'll have the suite for all four of us, and we are going to do family things, but alone time between the two of us will be scarce."
"It's been scarce for the past nine years." Santana laughed. "But we're moms, can't change that." She added, fluffing the pillows on the futon.
"I would never change that." Brittany shook her head, she sat in the rocker and opened her arms for Santana, who walked over and cuddled close to her in the chair, allowing Brittany to hug her tightly. "I really want to go away with you this weekend."
Santana looked up at her wife and nodded. "Then we'll go, baby, whatever you want. I want to go away with you too, we deserve a vacation."
"Yeah we do." Brittany smiled before kissing Santana softly. "We deserve some mommy alone time." She whispered before deepening the kiss.
Santana moaned softly and reluctantly broke the kiss, glancing at Skylar's crib, she pecked Brittany's lips once more. "So do you think your mom is really pissed?" She asked, wiping Brittany's bottom lip with her thumb slowly.
"Not too too bad, but upset enough. I can tell by how she looked at me over her glasses." Brittany rolled her eyes, while rubbing Santana's back. "I'm going to order some pizzas for everyone for dinner, and maybe some wings."
"Sounds good." Santana smiled. "I'm going to finish changing our linen on our bed."
"Okay, baby, see you downstairs in a few." Brittany smiled as Santana stood up, she kissed Skylar on the cheek again and left the room.
Santana picked up a few of Skylar's toys that were out of place and put them up, she then smoothed out the comforter on the futon for Taylor and set a fun size pack of Starburst on the pillow with a starburst lily, Taylor's favorite flower. She plugged in Skylar's night light and quietly left the room, heading across the hall to her own, where she put fresh linen on their bed and double checked their suitcases and made sure they had their passports ready on the bedside table.
"Then the whole stage fell and everyone laughed super loud." Taylor laughed before taking a big bite of her pizza crust. "Mami never gets stuffed crust, this is awesome!"
"It's so much cheese." Santana laughed softly, staring at the crust in her hand before handing Brittany her crust and blushing when the blonde kissed her on the cheek happily and dropped her slice to eat it.
"You have the best stories." Mr. Pierce laughed, pinching Taylor on the cheek.
"I have lots, Poppa." She nodded while taking another bite. "Did you know that I named Skylar?" She said excited. "Well, momma picked the name Skylar, but I got to pick her middle name!"
"Is that right?" Mr. Lopez smiled.
"Si, papi." Santana nodded, taking a sip of her beer.
"I picked Reese cuz mami ate so many Reese's cups when she was pregnant, they were all over the house, in the freezer, in the fridge, momma would buy the whole shelf when we went shopping, and mami would eat like two king size ones every night after dinner." Taylor giggled. "I bet Sky Sky likes them too, babies eat what the mommies eat, right?"
"That's right." Santana laughed. "Brittany was so amazing that pregnancy, Taylor too." She smiled. "I had the most amazing helpers ever, it was a pretty rough pregnancy, but we made it through."
"Skylar gets turkey tomorrow!" Taylor added suddenly. "I'm super excited, turkey is so awesome."
"You are still a ball of energy." Mrs. Pierce smiled,
"So what time is your flight tomorrow?" Mr. Lopez asked.
Santana cleared her throat. "Our flight is at 5pm, so we'll get there around 8pm, their time."
"You'll call and say good night?" Taylor asked.
"Of course Tay." Brittany assured her. "You can stay up until we call you."
Santana stood up. "I need to call the hospital, so excuse me all. Taylor when everyone is done eating, please clear the table."
Brittany watched her wife carry her plate to the sink and set it in before heading out of the kitchen. The remainder of dinner went smoothly, Taylor continuing to talk non stop the entire time.
Brittany helped Taylor clear the table as Mr. Lopez and Mr. Pierce went to the living room and began to watch tv. Taylor joined them shortly after leaving Brittany in the kitchen with her mother and mother-in-law.
Brittany excused herself to the basement, where she folded a few towels and let them in the basket on the dryer for Santana to carry back upstairs.
"I don't know, Maria." Mrs. Pierce shook her head as she helped her chop more onions. "Back in our day, we didn't run off and leave our kids to run around in the sand."
Mrs. Lopez smiled. "It's a lot different than when we were bringing our kids up; but I agree, especially on a holiday. God forbid I say anything at all to my daughter and it'll be World War III, so I'm choosing to stay quiet about this whole matter." She laughed. "I'm just happy to finally see my granddaughters in person, and not through the pictures she emails me."
"Did you talk to Santana about that?"
"Yes and no. Santanita hasn't changed." Mrs. Lopez shook her head. "She's still stubborn and overprotective about everything, she's sensitive about her family."
"Well, with their divorce and the quick remarriage, I can understand that." Mrs. Pierce nodded as Brittany walked in the kitchen, holding Santana's airplane pillow.
"Brittany, honey, sit down and talk with us."
Brittany reluctantly sat down. "What's up, mom? How's work?"
"Work is good." Mrs. Pierce smiled. "I would prefer to talk about you and Santana."
"I would prefer not to." Brittany replied.
"You two are staying so holed up in this house with the girls, you don't come to Lima, you don't call as often as I think you should, we don't get invited here often, what's going on?" Mrs. Pierce asked.
"Santana and I are just busy with work." Brittany shook her head. "You know that mom."
"Why was Santana keeping Skylar away from The Lopez's?"
"I don't know that mom, but she wasn't keeping Sky away, they received pictures and..."
"Pictures of a grandchild?" Mrs. Pierce snapped softly. "That's unacceptable."
Brittany closed her eyes tightly and exhaled deeply. "I've apologized for that, and I was unaware of what Santana was doing."
Mrs. Pierce narrowed her eyes on her daughter and glanced at Mrs. Lopez.
"So..."
"I'll be right back mom." Brittany jumped up and bolted out of the kitchen, smiling at Taylor and her grandfathers as they watched a movie together. She went up to the bedroom and shook her head when she heard soft music coming from the bathroom. She opened the door and saw Santana leaned back in the bathtub, she was surrounded by bubbles, candles were lit, and soft jazz music was playing.
"You aren't leaving me downstairs in the lions den with our parents while you relax in a bubble bath, get out. Now!"
Santana jumped from Brittany's yelling. "Shit, you just scared the hell out of me."
"Why are you taking a bath? I thought you needed to make a phone call?" Brittany questioned, tapping her foot angrily on the floor.
"Sorry." Santana laughed softly. "I saw an opportunity to have a few moments of silence so I took it." She smiled softly at Brittany. "Don't be mad, please, just get in with me."
"What?" Brittany asked.
"Get in, the water is perfect, I can massage your back." Santana told her, lifting some bubbles in hand and blowing them towards Brittany. "Come on in..."
Brittany laughed and began to strip down quickly and stepped into the tub, leaning back on Santana's chest. "The water is perfect."
"Told you." Santana kissed down her neck, her hands palming Brittany's breasts.
"Doesn't this feel nice?"
"Very." Brittany nodded as her body relaxed some more. "I see why you didn't want all of the grandparents here now."
"What happened?"
"Nothing...let's just relax." She replied, leaning further into Santana, who hugged her tightly and continued to kiss her shoulders, before humming with the music softly.
"I love this part of the song." Santana whispered. "Listen to the horns."
2am
After their relaxing bath, Santana kept her promise and gave Brittany a full body massage which put her right to sleep as always. Santana laid in bed and watched a little TV before going downstairs to see what everyone was doing, making sure everyone was settled for the night. She sat with Taylor in Skylar's room, getting her settled and comfortable before getting back in bed with Brittany, who woke up around 11pm, they watched a movie together before falling asleep, Santana lying on Brittany's chest.
Santana woke up when she heard Taylor whimpering in her sleep through the baby monitor from Skylar's room. She untangled herself from Brittany's arms and slipped out of bed to go check on her daughter. She peeped her head in the room and saw Taylor sitting straight up on the futon, looking around while running her fingers through her hair.
"Tay?" Santana whispered, walking in and sitting next to her daughter, pulling her daughter into her arms. "You're sweating, honey." She stood up and grabbed a baby wipe and patted down Taylor's face and neck. "Bad dream?" She asked when Taylor hugged her tightly.
"Yeah." She nodded against her mother's chest.
Santana climbed in the futon and sat behind Taylor, leaning her back on her chest and hugging her tightly. "Take a deep breath, Tay, I can feel your heart beating. I'm here, Tay, you're okay." Santana kissed the top of her head and rubbed her back when Taylor shifted to face her. "What's going on with all the nightmares? What are you watching on tv?"
"My nightmares are about you." Taylor whispered.
Santana froze and leaned Taylor back to look in her eyes. "Because of me?"
Taylor nodded. "You're a doctor and you fix people, but what if you can't fix someone and their family gets mad and comes to attack you? Who would save you?"
Santana stared at her and kissed her firmly on the forehead. "Why would you think that would happen?"
"Zara's dad is a lawyer and when he couldn't get a man out of jail, his cousins attacked her dad and he's in the hospital now." Taylor rushed out, blinking fresh tears out of her eyes. "What is someone gets mad that you couldn't save someone?"
Santana felt her heart break watching Taylor become so frantic. "Taylor, don't worry about that sweetheart. I'm safe at work, super safe."
"Promise?"
"I promise, and a lot of people know that I do my very best to save their loved one, no one is going to come hunt me down if someone doesn't make it." Santana rubbed her back and hugged her tighter. "I'm safe, okay?"
"Okay." Taylor nodded finally after several minutes.
Santana shuffled so she was lying down with Taylor, who turned to face her and cuddled in her mother's chest. "Go back to sleep, sweetheart." She whispered, glancing at Skylar's crib to make sure she was still asleep.
Once Taylor fell into a deep sleep, Santana stroking her hair, she got out of bed and kissed all over her face, she ran her fingers through Skylar's hair and quietly left the room. She walked back in the room and saw Brittany sitting up in bed. "Is Tay okay?"
Santana nodded and straddled her in bed. "Yes, she's okay, back peacefully asleep."
"I wonder how long she's been having that nightmare?" Brittany asked, grabbing Santana's hips and squeezing gently.
"I don't know, I'll talk to her about it more tomorrow before we leave." Santana replied, she kissed Brittany and laid back down in bed.
"You're going to sleep?" Brittany pouted.
Santana opened one eye. "Aren't you?" She laughed.
"I had something else in mind." Brittany blushed.
"Our parents are next door and down the hall." Santana laughed as Brittany slipped her hand in her pajama pants.
"Well, we just have to be even quieter, my mom hears everything." Brittany smirked as she rolled Santana on top of her.
Thanksgiving 1pm
"Taylor, why don't you say grace?" Santana nodded to her daughter as the family gathered around the table, Skylar in Mr. Lopez's arms, holding him tightly around the neck.
"Cool, okay, we all have to join hands, right?" Taylor looked up at Santana, who nodded to her. "Okay, everyone hold hands, bow your heads, and close your eyes. Oh, and open your hearts." She looked around at everyone and smiled. "Thank you God for waking us up this morning so we could brush our teeth and wash our face and stuff, because not everyone got to do that this morning. Thank you for letting Buela and Papi, and Gam Gam and Poppa make it safely to New York so we can all have dinner together today on this super special day. Thanks for my moms who both have good jobs and are able to take care of me and Skylar, or is it Skylar and me? Yeah, Skylar and me. They are tired sometimes but still are always there for us. Thank you for the turkey dinner and that Sky Sky gets to finally taste turkey tonight." taylor rattled off. "Oh and that mami and momma have a safe trip to the beach tonight. In God's name, amen."
"Amen." Everyone at the table echoed.
"Good job, baby." Santana smiled proudly, squeezing Taylor's hand.
"Very good job." Brittany agreed, hugging her tightly.
"Let's eat!" Mr. Pierce smiled as he stood to carve the turkey.
Santana reached for Skylar and set her in the high chair next to her seat, handing her a roll immediately so she wouldn't start to whine. Once Skylar was happily eating, Santana began to fix Taylor's plate, making sure she got vegetables and not just a plate of turkey. "Can I fix my own?" Taylor asked quietly.
Santana smiled and handed her daughter the plate. "Of course." She winked at her and accepted a plate from Brittany, who was making Skylar's plate for her. "She won't eat the beans, B." She reminded Brittany, when she saw the green beans on Skylar's plate.
"Worth a try." Brittany laughed, glancing at Skylar, who was staring at the plate.
"No." Skylar shook her head, pointing at the plate.
Santana laughed and smiled at Skylar. "Told you."
After dinner the family gathered in the living room, Skylar and Taylor sitting on the floor playing with Skylar's blocks, while Mr. Pierce and Mr. Lopez watched the football game. Mrs. Pierce was was playing a word game on her iPad, while Mrs. Lopez busied herself in the kitchen. Brittany was on the floor with her daughters, helping them build a tower, while Santana watched from the couch, wanting to just stare at her daughters before their flight.
"Buela has milkshakes for her girls." Mrs. Lopez smiled as she carried a tray of milkshakes in the living room.
"Whoa!" Taylor jumped up when she saw the huge glass full of vanilla, chocolate, whip cream, and topped with a cherry. "I get a whole one?"
"Share with Sky." Santana told her. "Otherwise yes."
Taylor accepted the milkshake while Brittany held out her hand happily for one, making Santana laugh. "Come on Sky." Taylor opened her legs into a V and patted the space between her legs. Skylar ran over and sat down in front of Taylor, who was taking a long sip and reached for the cup.
"Mine." Skylar said loudly.
Santana watched the interaction from the couch, smiling when Taylor held the straw to her little sisters mouth and shared with her. "Good right?" Taylor asked Skylar, who reached for it again as Taylor took her turn.
"You have to share Sky." Brittany reminded the baby who seemed to get upset when it wasn't her turn to drink.
"Mine!" Skylar demanded and reached again for the glass but Taylor moved it, causing Skylar to scream and start to cry.
Brittany reached over and grabbed the glass. "Let's take a time out from the glass."
Skylar jumped up and ran towards Brittany to get the milkshake back but Brittany shook her head, Skylar rubbed her eyes as she started to cry harder and ran to Santana, hiding her face in her leg. Santana rubbed her back and tried not to laugh. "You have to share with Taylor and you're not sharing."
"Bua!" Skylar sniffled and ran to Mrs. Lopez, who picked her up and rubbed her back.
"Buela will get your milkshake back." Mrs. Lopez smiled, sticking out her tongue at Brittany and Santana, who only laughed in return. "You can share with Buela." Mrs. Lopez sat on the couch with Skylar in her lap and handed the baby her milkshake.
Brittany handed Taylor the one she had back and laughed when Skylar glared at Santana before taking a big sip and leaning into her grandmother's arms.
"I think she'll be fine while we are gone." Santana laughed. "We need to get going, B."
Brittany nodded and stood up to help Santana with their bags, after a long drawn out goodbye to their daughters, with Santana shedding a few tears, this being her first time away from Skylar for more than a few hours. They made their way to the airport in a cab and took advantage of the hotel bars to start their vacation.
9pm Cabo
"Time to start our vacation, officially." Brittany smiled lifting a glass of champagne and clicking it with Santana's.
"Yes, the girls are asleep and content." Santana nodded. "You know what I really want to do?" She smiled taking a sip of her champagne.
"I know you, Dr. Lopez, and I know exactly what you're thinking, because I'm thinking it too." Brittany blushed, she took a sip of her champagne and grabbed Santana's from her hand. Santana pressed their lips together and smiled.
"Good night, baby." Santana smiled as she took her glasses off and laid down.
"Good night, San." Brittany replied as she cuddled close behind her wife and the two
of them fell asleep almost instantly.
