Chapter 36

Sunday 8pm
"Hey, pick up your toy, I don't know why you even brought it." Santana sighed at one of the puppies, who dropped their toy and refused to pick it up, instead picking up a stick, bending down and picking up the toy Hansel left behind, and tossing it in the wagon she was pushing next to her, Skylar sleepily sitting it in, an army of Snoopy stuffed animals surrounding her, one firmly in her hand.
"No." Skylar reached for the toy and threw it out of the wagon angrily.
"Skylar." Santana shook heard. "Leave it alone." She told her, bending down and picking up the toy again, tossing it in the wagon, one of the puppies jumping on Santana's arms when she bent down. She smiled at the puppy, rubbing behind her ear for a few moments before she began to walk again.
Skylar stared at the toy and angrily threw it back out of the wagon, Santana rolled her eyes and stuffed the toy in her sweatshirt pocket. "Cookie?"
"No, it's too late, you should be in bed already anyways." Santana shook her head quickly. "We are going to head home soon, then it's bath time, and Mami will read you a story."
"Mami." Skylar tried to stand up so Santana quickly stopped, not wanting her to fall.
"Sit down, baby." Santana told her as one of the puppies hopped in the wagon and sat down.
"Mami." Skylar reached her arms out to Santana, an indication she wanted to be held instead of pushed. Santana saw how tired she was so she set the other puppy in the wagon, laughing when they both laid down, cuddling into each other, probably tired from the long walk they had been on for the past 45 minutes.
"Come to Mami." Santana lifted her up, grabbing a Snoopy for her to hold. "I know you're tired, honey." She whispered, kissing her on the forehead and shifting the baby so she was comfortable. "Let's head back home."
"Snoopy."
"Si, Snoopy is coming home too." Santana assured her as Skylar exhaled deeply, her eyes fluttering closed. She started to hum softly, smiling politely at the different people she saw out walking their dogs or walking with strollers as she turned around and headed back to their house. She managed to get her cell phone out of her pocket when she felt it vibrate and answered quickly.
Hey Brittany
Hey, are you headed back home?
Yeah, Sky is asleep so I'm carrying her now and pushing the dogs in the wagon.
Brittany laughed. Okay, Taylor just got out of her bath, which lotion do you want me to use on her?
The lotion in the blue bottle, I have her use that one at night since it's medicated. Just use a light layer and you don't have to use her ointment.
Okay
We'll be home soon, can you run a bath for Sky for me please, you can run it in our room and I'll take a bath with her. We should be back in like fifteen minutes.
Sure.
Thanks.
"Momma is running a nice warm bath for you." Santana told her daughter, the baby glancing up at her, waking up when Santana shifted her to put her phone back in her pocket. "You are going to sleep so good tonight." Skylar closed her eyes again, clutching tightly to Santana and rubbing her face against her mother's shoulder. "Go to sleep, Mami has you."
Brittany knocked on Taylor's door before walking in, smiling at her daughter as she began loading her backpack. "Hey honey." She stated, sitting down on Taylor's bed. "Ready for school tomorrow?"
Taylor looked up from her backpack and nodded. "Yeah, Mami got me a new backpack."
"I see, it's pretty cool." Brittany nodded, running her fingers over the backpack.
Taylor nodded. "Yeah, she let me pick whichever one I wanted, so I got this one, I thought it looked the coolest, and Sky smiled at it too, so I think she likes it." She added, shrugging slightly as Brittany carried it to her desk and set it in the chair.
"Come talk to me for a little while." Brittany smiled.
"Am I in trouble?" Taylor asked nervously.
Brittany raised an eyebrow. "Why would you be in trouble?"
Taylor shrugged. "I think I forgot to get the puppies poop tonight after dinner." She whispered, avoiding eye contact.
Brittany smiled and shook her head. "You can get it in the morning, that okay, we just don't want it to pile up out there, so that's why we want you to get it after each time, but if you forget once or twice, it's okay. You're not in trouble. I just want to talk to you about school and the move."
"Okay." Taylor climbed in her bad and sat down next to Brittany, facing her mother and shifting to sit Indian style.
"I know it's only been a few days, but how do you like it down here so far?" Brittany asked, mimicking her daughter's posture.
Taylor smiled brightly. "It's pretty! The sky is always blue, well it has been for now, but I do miss the snow. We can't teach Sky to make snowmen down here." She frowned. "Or take her sledding."
"Hmmmm, we'll next winter we'll make sure to go visit New York and Lima so you can teach her all those cool things, she'll be older and can really enjoy it by then." Brittany nodded.
"Okay."
"Are you nervous about school tomorrow?" Brittany asked. "You're taking the school bus, I know you aren't used to that."
"I'm excited about the bus." Taylor shrugged. "I've always had fun on the bus for field trips, but I'm nervous because I don't know anyone, who do I sit with on the bus?"
Brittany smiled softly at her, knowing Taylor was a lot more nervous than she wanted to admit. "Well, you can sit by yourself, or you can sit next to someone and introduce yourself, and make a new friend. Either way is okay."
"What would you do?" Taylor asked.
"Honestly, I would sit with someone in the morning and make a friend." Brittany replied truthfully. "But that's my personality."
"What would Mami do?"
"Mami would probably sit by herself." Brittany smiled. "But that's her personality. You have to do what you are most comfortable with, Tay."
"Okay, sometimes if I don't want to ride the bus, can you or Mami take me to school?" Taylor asked, sticking her tongue through the new opening from her tooth falling out that morning.
Brittany nodded quickly. "Of course."
"Cool." Taylor blushed. "We didn't make my lunch yet?"
"I'm going to make it for you tonight, it'll be waiting for you in the morning, what kind of sandwich do you want?" Brittany asked.
"Turkey and provolone." Taylor stated confidently.
"Awesome choice." Brittany smiled, leaning forward and kissing her on the forehead. "Why don't you read a comic book for another thirty minutes before bed."
"Okay, good night." Taylor blushed.
"Good night, sweetheart." Brittany winked. "I'm sure your mom will come say good night as well, sounds like she's coming in the house now."
"Okay." Taylor nodded as Brittany glanced out the window, smiling at a couple she saw jogging down the street before leaving the room.
10pm
Santana was laying on the couch in the enclosed patio off the kitchen, her IPad in her hand, a bottle of water next to her on the table. Brittany smiled at the puppies, fast asleep in their pen as she leaned against the door frame. "You love it out here." The blonde smiled.
Santana looked up and nodded. "Best room in the house, well aside from our bedroom." She laughed. "It's so relaxing, I love that the windows all have screens, and this comfortable breeze wafts in, and I can look out at the backyard, which is so amazing. I'm really happy down here, B."
Brittany walked in and sat on the couch, lifting the Latina's feet in her lap. "Super glad to hear you say that. What are you looking up?"
"Umm, some ideas for the girls playroom, I know we decided on the stations and the set up, but I'm just on Pinterest looking up some cute little ideas to add. Then I priced some lawn mowers, and I want to get a firepit, and some lights to put around the pool." Santana replied, handing Brittany her iPad to show her some of the ideas she saved.
"I want to get a fence put around the pool. I know Sky will always be outside with one of us, but it only takes a second for a disaster to happen, for one of us to hear a noise and turn around, or the phone rings and we look away." Brittany told her. "Better safe than sorry."
"I agree." Santana replied. "I'll call around to some places to see about some estimates."
"I think we need to talk." Brittany told her, setting the IPad down.
Santana frowned but sat up, focusing her attention on her wife. "Okay, everything okay?"
"I hope so." Brittany replied. "I know you're upset about the toys I've been buying Skylar."
Santana nodded. "Yes..."
"Can I ask why you have a problem with me buying the girls toys?"
"Brittany, I don't mind you buying the girls toys, I buy them toys, but the amount of stuff you've bought Skylar in the past week is ridiculous baby." Santana explained. "You spoil Sky, that's no secret, the world knows that." She teased with a smile. "But this feels different. I know you go out and always get Sky a toy when she likes a new cartoon to help her identify the cartoon and learn the characters, but you found a gang of Big Birds and an army of Snoopy, at this rate Sky will need the master bedroom."
Brittany laughed softly but didn't reply.
"What's going on?" Santana aske dead.
"I just uprooted the girls and moved them across the country, I guess I just want to make sure they are comfortable and it's a smooth transistion." Brittany shrugged.
Santana smiled. "I figured it was that. Brit, baby, Sky is so young that she doesn't even really know what's going on, she just knows that we are in a different house, and she seems okay with it." She moved closer to Brittany, grabbing her hands. "Sky isn't going to love you any less because we moved to a bigger house in warmer weather." She laughed. "All Sky wants is to be warm, fed, and loved. She wants you to play with her and hold her, to cuddle her to sleep, to read her bedtime stories, have crazy dance parties with her, and to share a bowl of rainbow goldfish with her. She doesn't need all the toys, Brit, she just needs us and she'll be okay with the move. We are doing it right, I think we are doing a really good job."
Brittany blushed. "Yeah we are. I'm sorry for ignoring you the other night before we went to dinner, I just..."
"It's okay." Santana replied. "I just wanted to talk to you before she saw another commercial and you spent another couple hundred dollars on toys." She winked.
Brittany playfully rolled her eyes and picked up the IPad again. "This would be cute." She pointed to a picture, Santana nodding quickly.
"That was the first one I saved, Sky would love that." She replied.
Monday, 7am
Santana yawned as she walked back in the house after seeing Taylor off on the school bus, Skylar was standing by the door, looking out at her mother, holding a big puzzle piece, softly sucking on a pacifier, which Santana took out of her mouth. "You don't need this, do you?"
Skylar stepped to the side, letting her mother in the house, before shaking her head no quickly.
"Where's Snoopy?" Santana asked her, kneeling down and running her fingers through the baby's curls, untangling her hair gently.
"Snoopy."
"Si, where's Snoopy?" She asked again.
Skylar looked around and pointed to the stuffed dog sitting down next to Skylar's puzzle, a few puzzle pieces in his lap. "Help." She then requested, holding the puzzle piece to Santana.
Santana smiled and accepted the piece, walking over and sitting next to Snoopy, Skylar following her and sitting in her lap. "You're wet, honey." She lifted her daughter and checked her diaper. "Let's go get a new diaper." She picked her up and carried her up the stairs, just as Brittany was leaving the bedroom, her briefcase in one hand, her cell phone in the other, quickly replying to a text.
"Good morning." Brittany smiled, kissing them each on the cheek. "I watched Taylor from the window get on the bus, she'll be okay, right?"
"More than okay." Santana replied. "I thought you changed her diaper this morning?" She asked, carrying Skylar into her bedroom.
"I did." Brittany frowned. "She needs a diaper change again?"
"Yeah." Santana nodded, sitting the baby on the changing table, Skylar smiling at Brittany as her diaper got changed. "Want to meet for lunch today" Are you free?"
"I just got an email that I have a meeting in LA today, so I can't." Brittany told her, replying to an email and setting her phone down.
Santana looked up quickly. "What? You're leaving today, when are you coming back?" She asked, wiping Skylar down quickly and getting a new diaper on her.
"Flying there at 9 and I'll be back home 2." Brittany replied. "It's not an overnight trip, that's the beauty of this position, very few overnight trips."
"Okay." Santana smiled. "Just us two today, Smiley." She told the baby, sitting her back up, Skylar reaching for her to get held right away, which Santana did immediately.
"Why don't you two come?" Brittany suggested. "It's just me and my assistant on the flight, we are taking the private jet. We can get lunch out there."
Santana raised an eyebrow, following Brittany out of the room, she laughed softly. "What?"
"Why don't you two come?" Brittany suggested again, smiling when they reached the kitchen as she poured herself a cup of coffee.
"B..." Santana laughed again. "While that sounds like an amazing day, it's not a good idea, it's Tay's first day, and what if something goes wrong and we are both in Cali, we don't know anyone here to run and get her, or what if there is a delay and we are held up when she gets home from school, she would have to sit out on the steps."
"Oh yeah." Brittany sighed.
"Thank you for inviting me, baby, but just not a good idea this time." Santana kissed her on the cheek. "Our time is coming when I can freely travel with you."
"Next time." Brittany winked. "I gotta get going, so I'll see you two later." She smiled, kissing Skyalr on the forehad and kissing Santana deeply.
"Bye, B, be safe, call me at take off and when you land, and then we you take off again." Santana rattled off quickly, following her to the door.
"Bye love." Brittany replied.
"Bye bye." Skylar smiled, scrunching her face and fave at her mother.
"Bye bye." Brittany repeated, giving her a high five.
"Okay, now the puppies have to go, then we can play." Santana told her duaghter, setting her down and going to put the puppies in their carrier, so they could head to obedience school.
Friday, 6pm
Brittany walked in the house, having gotten home from work later than she expected, she looked through the house for her family, checking her bedroom and the basement, before going back to her bedroom, where she left her briefcase and cell phone. She was getting ready to dial Satnana to call her and see where she was when she heard laughing through the window. She glanced out in the backyard and saw Taylor and Skylar running around with the puppies, Santana watching them as she cooked on the grill.
Changing her clothes quickly, getting out of her business suit and putting on a pair of jeans and a tshirt. She grabbed two beers from the fridge and walked outside. Skylar spotting her first and running quickly over to her. "Hey Sky Sky." Brittany smiled, picking her up and hugging her tightly, kissing all over her face.
"Momma!" Skylar laughed, wiggling to get back down to finish playing.
"Hi momma!" Taylor waved, running over quickly to hug her mother before going back to playing with the puppies.
"Sorry I'm late, Santana, I'm working on a huge campaign right now." Brittany apologized quickly, handing her wife the beer.
Santana smiled. "I'm not mad, baby, I know you've been busy at work. How is the campaign going?" She asked, nodding a thank you for the beer and taking a long gulp of it.
"Kind of stressful to be honest, we are really bumping heads with them, they aren't liking any of our ideas, I have to go back to LA Monday and Tuesday." Brittany rolled her eyes.
"That sucks." Santana frowned.
"Yeah it does, but I don't want to talk about work this weekend, I just want to relax around the house." Brittany sighed. "Clear my head a little, maybe that'll give me some fresh ideas."
"Good thinking." Santana replied. "Are you hungry? I have burgers and hotdogs, and some corn roasting too."
"Starving." Brittany nodded as Skylar ran over to her and hugged her leg.
"Momma, eat." Skylar whined, looking up at Brittany, her big brown eyes pouting.
"Is anything done yet?" Brittany asked her wife.
Santana nodded. "Yes, I'm ready to take everything off the grill, can you grab that pan over to the side for me."
"Momma will get you a hotdog." Brittany told her, grabbing the pan, holding it as Santana took the food off.
"Tay, take the puppies inside and give them some water please, then wash your hands for dinner." Santana told her daughter, who nodded and ran towards the house, knowing the puppies would follow her.
Brittany bent down and picked up Sylar, who leaned on her shoulder quickly, hugging her tightly. "Did you have fun with Mami today?"
Santana glanced at her daughter and blushed when Skylar nodded yes quickly. "Mami play wif Sky."
"She did?!" Brittany exclaimed.
"We went to the park before lunch, I met a few people in the neighborhood that were there with their kids." Santana told her, carrying the food to the house. "There's a ton of kids around her, Taylor will have a great summer, and Sky Sky was so nice to the other little kids and played with them."
"Whoa, you made a friend today?" Brittany asked her daughter, following Santana in the house.
"No." Skylar frowned quickly, Santana laughing.
"She had fun." Santana added.
After dinner the family gathered in the living room, Taylor requesting that they all watch a movie together. Skylar cuddled in Santana's lap, laying on her mother's chest as Taylor cuddled in Brittany's side.
"Did you have a good week at school?" Brittany asked Taylor, rubbing her back as the movie went off, glancing at Santana and Skylar and seeing they were both fast asleep on the other end of the couch.
"Yeah, I got invited to a party next week." Taylor nodded. "You did, whoa." Brittany smiled. "What kind of party?"
"Samantha's birthday party." Taylor exclaimed. "She's in my math, English, and history class! It's at a water park, I think it's an indoor one."
"Sounds super fun." Brittany smiled. "Did you give your mom the invitation after school?"
"Yep, she said she would talk to you about it then we would go get a gift to take the party." Taylor told her excitedly.
"Well you have a big job of trying to find out the perfect gift,so pay close attention to what she likes and doesn't like." Brittany told. "You up for it?"
"Yep." Taylor replied.
"Okay, since Mami and Sky are asleep why don't we clean up everything down here and head upstairs. You can hang out in your room and watch another movie if you want."
"Can Sky sleep with me tonight?" Taylor asked. "I'll be careful and won't roll over on her."
"Sure." Brittany replied. "I know you are always careful with her."
Saturday, 7am
"Tay." Skylar whispered loudly, still unsure on what it means to whisper. She squirmed from under her sister's arm and smiled at her, standing up and leaning on her shoulder. Laughing to herself Skylar kissed Taylor on the cheek and looked over the side of the bed, trying to figure out us how she could get down.
Taylor felt her sister moving around, pacing the bed and opened one eye, just as the baby turned over and stuck one leg over the side of the bed. "Sky, you're going to fall." She said quickly, sitting up and reaching for her sister, grabbing her arm and tickling her as she laid back down.
"Tay!" Skylar beamed, as Taylor hugged her tightly.
"Where are you going?" Taylor asked her, kissing her on the forehead as Skylar stood back up quickly.
"Puppy." She pointed towards the door.
"Wanna go play with Hansel and Grettel?" Taylor asked, yawning slightly. "We can take them outside so they can use the bathroom."
"Outside?" Skylar asked, sitting down on her big sister's lap when Taylor sat back up.
"Yep, let's get our sneakers on, Mami and Momma will be so proud of us, we can give them water and food too." Taylor smiled as she jumped out of bed. She spotted a pair of Skylar's sneakers in her room and slipped them on her sister, before she picked her up and set her on the floor. She then put on a pair of her own sneakers and grabbed Skylar's hand as they made their way down the steps.
Santana woke up when she heard the backdoor slam and sat up quickly, hopping out of bed she went to the window and looked in the yard when she heard Taylor's voice, she saw her and standing by the puppies as they used the bathroom, the pooper scooper in her hand, while Skylar held a plastic bag with a big smile, happy to help her sister. Santana opened the window slowly, not wanting to wake up Brittany and whistled for Taylor to get her attention.
"Make sure Skylar doesn't touch the poop." Santana told her. "Okay." Taylor nodded.
"Mami!" Skylar smiled, waving happily.
"Hola mi amor." Santana smiled, waving back before getting back in bed, Brittany opening her eyes and staring at her.
"What's going on?" The blonde asked through a yawn.
Santana wiggled closer to Brittany, kissing her on the lips quickly, and cleared her throat. "Taylor is up already, yes on a Saturday, and she and Skylar are outside letting the puppies use the bathroom."
"Whoa."
"I know." Santana laughed. "She even has the pooper scooper ready to clean up after them."
"She's taking this so serious." Brittany smiled. "So proud of her."
"I am too." Santana sighed, closing her eyes as she snuggled into Brittany's embrace.
Brittany ran her hand up and down her wife's back slowly. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah I just want to cuddle with you." Santana replied, opening her eyes to stare at her wife. "This is one of the quietest moments we've had since being down here. I just want to enjoy it and lay in your arms."
"This week has been crazy, huh?" Brittany laughed softly, Santana nodding.
"Crazy but good, so now we can relax until Skylar starts crying, or the puppies start crying, or I start crying, because they are crying." Santana teased. "Doesn't this feel good, just laying here like this?"
Brittany snuggled and laid on Santana's chest. "Yeah it does." She admitted, hugging the Latina tightly. "I want to try to set up a date night for us, I know a baby sitter for the girls."
"From the board thing at your job?" Santana asked.
"Yeah, are you okay with that?"
Santana sighed. "Yes and no." She answered truthfully. "I trust the girls, the way you described how your job handles it sounds perfect, but I'm just a little worried about them still getting used to the house, you know?"
"I get it." Brittany nodded. "Well, how about after the girls are asleep, we plan a date night out in the back yard?"
"I love that idea." Santana nodded quickly as Brittany rolled on top of her and stared in her eyes. "I booked you a massage for next week, I found a spa that has great reviews down here. You haven't had one in a while, certainly not since you've been down here and I worry about your back, you know that."
"Thank you." Brittany smiled, pressing their lips together and kissing her sweetly. She felt Santana lick the crease. Between her lips and parted them, allowing her wife to deepen kiss, rolling them over in the process.
Brttany moaned softly as she grabbed Santana's butt and squeezed firmly. "You know the girls are gong to bust in here at any moment." Santana managed to whisper in between soft kisses.
"I know." Brittany nodded, kissing down her neck. "I'm okay with just kissing right now, and feeling your body close to mine."
"Same here." Santana blushed. "I love you."
"I love you too, baby." Brittany replied.
2pm
"Skylar don't do that." Santana told her daughter quickly, Skylar looking up at her a small glare. The family was out in the yard relaxing, Santana and Brittany relaxing on a blanket in the grass while Taylor blew bubbles, laughing at the Hansel chasing after them. They decided to have lunch outside as a little picnic since the weather was so gorgeous.
"Mine." Skylar mumbled.
"Yes, you eat the chicken." Santana nodded to her as Brittany glanced up from her iPad, where they were both looking at patio furniture they wanted to buy for the yard. Even though they had the small built in area by the grill, they wanted something a little safer for Skylar to climb in and out of.
Skylar stared at Santana taking a bite of her chicken tender slowly until her mother looked away from her and back at the iPad with Brittany. Grettel sat patiently by the baby, wagging her tail as Skylar gave her another bite of the chicken and took a bite herself, laughing as the dog chewed.
Santana reached over and grabbed the chicken from Skylar, breaking off the part that the dog bit off and sighed. "Come here Sky."
Skylar ran to her mother, the Latina lifting her in her lap and handed the chicken back to her. "You can't share with the puppies, that's nasty."
"My puppy." Skylar stated angrily.
"Si, she's your puppy but you have to to eat your chicken by yourself." Santana told her as Skylar snatched the chicken away, Grettel losing interest and running by Taylor, who was sitting blowing bubbles.
Brittany smiled at Skylar, who was now angrily eating in her mother's lap. "Why don't you go sit with Snoopy and Big Bird." She suggested to the baby, who she knew wasn't happy with Santana.
Skylar nodded and walked over to the blanket where her stuffed animals were set up, sitting all around and sat down next to them, babbling to them excitedly.
"I like that one." Santana pointed to the screen, picking out a picnic table.
"Want to order it?" Brittany asked.
"Yeah." Santana nodded when they heard the gate to the yard jingle.
Brittany sat up quickly. "Ummm, you think that's a neighbor?"
Santana shrugged. "Probably." She stood up and walked towards the gate as it opened and her parents appeared.
"Papi, Buela!" Taylor screamed excitedly, picking up both puppies and running over to her grandparents. "Look what we got!" She held up the puppies happily.
"Mami, Papi." Santana smiled, hugging her parents tightly as Brittany walked over and greeted them as well. Skylar looking frantically at her stuffed animals, trying to decide one to grab.
"Bua!" Skylar screamed when she couldn't decide and began to jump up and down excitedly.
Mrs. Lopez ran over to her granddaughter and picked her up, kissing all over her face. "Hey you!" She beamed as Skylar wiggled to get down and began to point out all of her toys.
"Whoa mi amor." Mr. Lopez laughed as Taylor showed how the puppies could sit and stay on command already.
"Not that we mind at all, but what brings you two to Phoenix?" Brittany smiled.
"Well, we wanted to come help you with the house." Mrs. Lopez smiled. "We wanted to give you some time to get the girls settled, but we want to help you now that it's been a week. Is that okay?"
"Yes!" Santana laughed. "It would be a big help Mami, I've been trying to get some things down while Brittany is at work, but with Sky it's not always easy."
"The yard looks nice, but I know you need a lawnmower, so we will get that tomorrow, and I want to build my granddaughters a tree house." Mr. Lopez nodded.
"Whoa!" Taylor's eyes widened. "You know how to do that?"
"Yep, Papi built mine when I was a little girl." Santana smiled.
"Well, how about we take you two out to dinner tonight, you're staying with us, right?" Brittany asked.
"We can get a hotel." Mr. Lopez replied. "Is your guest room ready?"
"Yeah it is." Santana nodded. "You have to stay, we have everything but a TV in there so far."
"Sounds good." Mrs. Lopez smiled. "So give us the grand tour." Taylor jumped up quickly. "I'll lead."
"Do I get a kiss?" Mr. Lopez asked Skylar, who was clutching to her grandmother, back in her arms.
"No." Skylar teased before laughing and kissing the elder man on the cheek.
Thought?
