Chapter 41

Santana lifted the ice pack off of Taylor's back when she saw she was finally asleep, setting it on the towel next to her on the bed. She ran her fingers over her daughter's bruise and sighed before pressing a soft kiss there and pulling her shirt down. After pulling the covers over her, she ran her fingers through her hair, staring at her for a few minutes before she finally took the items to the bathroom and set them on the sink. After checking on Skylar in her room she finally retreated to her bedroom where Brittany was sitting in bed, working on her laptop.

"Everything okay with Tay?" Brittany asked, closing the lid and standing to set it in the arm chair on her side of the room.

"Yeah." Santana nodded, getting in bed and leaning her head back against the headboard. "She's asleep, I just wanted to check on her bruises again on her back and her face."

Brittany nodded, picking up the baby monitor and checking on Skylar, smiling at her babbling in her sleep before turning her head to the other side; she then scooted closer to Santana, pulling her wife to lean on her chest.

"I never thought that Taylor would have to deal with that, it's been a gazillion years, the stigma and negatively and the hatred associated with the LGBT community needs to stop already. This is ridiculous. What the fuck are people teaching their kids at home." Santana rolled her eyes, holding Brittany tightly. "Tay is too small to be fighting, I can imagine how scared she was."

Brittany nodded. "She's small but she's tough. I didn't think she would have to deal with that either."

Santana sat up and moved to straddle Brittany, wanting to look her in the face while talking to her, she waited for Brittany to sit up a little more and hold her waist before continuing the conversation. "Here we are teaching Taylor and Skylar to respect everyone they meet, no matter how they look, their gender, their occupation, their sexual orientation, and she gets slapped and pushed down some stairs. I'm so pissed, Brittany."

"New York was definitely more progressive and accepting of us, it's going to be different for us down here." Brittany slipped her hand under Santana's shirt and massaged her back slightly. "We'll get through this." She added, leaning forward and kissing Santana softly on the lips. "We'll get through this."

"I expected her to get some backlash from me being Hispanic, you know dumb ass Trump wants that wall and calls us all thieves and rapists. All the closet racist white people in the world have taken the sheepskin off and they are showing their true colors, racism starts in the home, along with being homophobic." Santana rolled her eyes. "Is this seriously America right now?"

Brittany nodded. "Let's make America great again by tearing down women, people of color, the LGBT community, people with physical ailments, and I'm sure of a bunch of other things."

"Asshole." Santana snapped. "That damn wall just pisses me off."

"Back to Tay," Brittany smiled, knowing how into politics would get and how passionate her hatred for Trump was. "We'll get through this, I promise."

Santana nodded and sighed. "I know." She rolled off of Brittany, pulling her hair into a ponytail and laid down. "Good night, B."

Birttany glanced at the baby monitor before turning off the light and laying back down, cuddling close to her wife. "Night, baby." She kissed down her neck, Santana turning to catch her lips in a slow but heated kiss before tucking her head under Brittany's chin and closing her eyes.

"Here honey." Santana smiled, setting down a plate of breakfast for Skylar, a small pancake, a sausage link, and a spoonful of eggs. She helped Skylar position her fork in her hand, the baby watching her mother's hand closely as she guided her hand to her mouth. "Good job." She winked at her daughter when she got the food in her mouth right away. She kissed her on the forehead and smiled at her as Brittany walked in, wearing a pair of jeans and a sweater.

"Casual day at the office?" Santana asked softly, pouring her a cup of coffee for her wife and handing it to her.

"Working from home this morning, I want to go to Taylor's school with you this morning." Brittany told her, accepting the mug and kissing her softly before kissing Skylar on the top of the head, the baby glancing up and smiling before going back to attacking her breakfast the best she could.

"I didn't think you were coming." Santana shrugged and sat down in front of Skylar, helping her with her breakfast again, and handing another sausage to her plate.

"My daughter is getting bullied at school and got in a fight yesterday, I'll be right there with you, work can wait." Brittany replied sternly, taking a sip of her coffee and quickly pouring food and water for the dogs, even though that was Taylor's chore before school, so she decided to help her.

Santana nodded, watching Brittany fix herself a plate of breakfast right after. "Thank you, baby." Santana replied when Brittany handed her a plate. "You are doing so good this morning, Sky Sky." She praised her as the baby blushed and continued to maneuver her fork, Santana helping her occasionally.

"Good morning." Taylor smiled, walking in and hugging Brittany tightly.

"How did you sleep, sweetheart?" Brittany asked, rubbing her back gently, kissing her on the forehead.

"Good." Taylor replied, turning and hugging Santana, who winked at her.

"Morning, baby, get some breakfast and eat up, we have to go to your school earlier than normal to talk to your teacher today." Santana told her, looking over her outfit, a pair of dark denim distressed jeans, her orange and white Jordan sneakers, and an orange and pink striped Ralph Lauren polo.

Santana grabbed her arm softly, pulling her close to check her face, inwardly sighing at the red mark which seemed a little worse than the day before; kissing the bruise lightly she ran her fingers through Taylor's hair as her daughters greeted each other for the morning. Skylar babbling quickly to Taylor, while pointing to her food, and offering her sausage to her sister.

45 minutes later Brittany and Santana were walking into Taylor's school, Skylar holding Santana's hand tightly while she looked around with big eyes, excited by all the colors she saw, she would shake Santana's hand and point with a big smile, Santana happily nodding to her and saying the color for Skylar to repeat. "Mami will find you a preschool with lots of colors today, okay?"

"Skool." Skylar nodded.

Brittany glanced at her wife. "Are you starting that today?" She asked.

"I was just going to drive around the area and see which ones are close, I'm not doing any tours without you, I might just pop in and set up a meeting for us." Santana paused. "Is that okay? I didn't mean to just take charge."

"Perfectly fine, but I want to go on all the tours and we are deciding together." Brittany added. "Get brochures from wherever you stop."

"Of course." Santana nodded, kneeling down in front of Skylar when they reached the principal's office. "I need you to behave and sit quietly while we talk to Taylor's teacher." She handed her Snoopy to her and smiled. "You and Snoopy stay quiet."

Skylar stared at her and held Snoopy tightly before kissing him on the nose and nodding.

"Thank you."

"Thank." Skylar repeated as Brittany knocked on the door and waited patiently, wrapping her around about Taylor, who leaned into her embrace.

Moments later a thin red haired woman opened the door and smiled. "You must be the Lopez-Pierce family, please come in."

Once they were in the office, Skylar climbed in Santana's lap and leaned back on her chest, staring at the woman. "Sorry we had to bring our youngest, but being new to the area, we didn't have a choice." Brittany smiled, glancing at her daughter and reminding her to stay quiet by putting her finger to her mouth, Skylar mimicking her and nodding.

"No problem, it's nice to officially meet you both. I'm Dr. Pillsbury." She smiled warmly, "I know Taylor did her orientation with the vice principal."

"I'm Dr. Santana Lopez-Pierce, and this is my wife Brittany." Santana replied. "I want to start by saying we do acknowledge that Taylor did start the physical part of the altercation by pushing Brynn first and she has been talked to at home about keeping her hands to herself, so we definitely addressed the hitting issue with her."

"No hit." Skylar chimed in quickly, pulling on her necklace to get her attention.

"Si baby, no hitting." Santana nodded to her.

Brittany smiled at her youngest before glancing at Taylor. "Taylor will be writing an apology to Brynn, but we do want to inquire about the bullying policy here. Santana and I are married, we are in a same sex marriage and are proud of it, we won't hide it for any reason. We are very involved in our daughter's lives and extracurriculars, and plan to attend various functions at the school PTO meetings and such, while we can handle ridicule ourselves we want the piece of mind that our 9 year old won't be subjected to hate or bullying because of us."

Santana nodded in agreement, setting Skylar down and watching her run over to Taylor, climbing in her lap instead. "Exactly, we picked this school for Taylor because you have the best accolades, but we won't sacrifice her mental, emotional, or physical safety for high test scores. We know that you can't control what kids say on the playground, but that's hate speech and she was pushed down some stairs as a result. She has bruises on her back, a handprint on her face, as a parent you can imagine our horror with that, typically is a student is being bullying it gets worse and worse, the physical altercations get worse. Being a doctor I've worked on some kids that..." She glanced at Taylor, who now looked scared and cleared her throat. "Taylor's safety here comes first and foremost to us."

"Well Brynn has been suspended for two days, and Taylor will have a detention during recess today and tomorrow, she will helping her teacher with prep." Mrs. Pillsbury explained as the first warning bell rang. "Taylor, you better get to your home room." She told her, Taylor setting Skylar down and nodding, grabbing her backpack. "If you have any trouble today at all, let a teacher know right away."

"Okay." Taylor replied quietly. "Bye mami, bye momma, bye Sky."

"I'll pick you up after school Tay, don't get on the bus, wait for me at the front door." Santana told her, kissing her on the cheek and checking her face once again before nodding for her to get to class. Taylor hi fived Brittany on the way out, Skylar frowning when she left but shrugging and leaning on Brittany's leg.

Brittany cleared her throat. "Did we make the wrong decision with picking this school? She's dealing with enough with the sudden move and I won't have my daughter in a detrimental environment of any sort. She's already small for her age and I won't have her in a school where's getting bullied." She stated sternly.

"I assure you, the situation has been handled and won't happen again." The principal replied.

"Good." Brittany smiled tightly, picking up Skylar and heading towards the door, Santana right at her side.

"Bye!" Skylar waved with a smirk before the office door slammed.

1pm

Santana rubbed Skylar's back, the baby fast asleep in the cart, leaning on the pillow that her mother planned to buy since she was now drooling on it. She decided to enjoy the quiet time Skylar granted her and took her time in the store, looking at a variety of things, still envisioning different rooms in the house that she wanted to keep decorating, while buying little things for Brittany, Taylor, and Skylar. She was in the arts and crafts section of Target, picking out chalkboard spray paint for the girls' play room when she felt someone tapped her on the shoulder.

"Sorry, I didn't realize I was in the middle." She quickly apologized and moved the cart over, Skylar not flinching at all as she jerked the cart over.

"It's just me," A soft voice stated. "You're fine, Dr. Lopez-Pierce."

Santana turned around at the familiarity of the voice and smiled at Daphne.

"Please, call me, Santana." She smiled, as she quickly dug in the diaper bag and pulled out a card. "A thank you card for inviting us over to dinner and cooking, I was going to drop it off when I got home this afternoon."

"It was a little short notice for me, Yesi only told me that morning." Daphne smiled. "So I hope everything was okay?"

"She invited us over before that." Santana frowned. "Everything was seriously good."

"Well, good to see you." Daphne smiled, grabbing a can of black spray paint and beginning to walk down the aisle.

"You deserve better than her." Santana spit out before quickly covering her mouth, Daphne turning around slowly.

"What did you say?" Daphne asked quickly, walking back towards her slowly.

Santana turned around. "I said you deserve better than her, I don't mean to be rude, but your wife has been making passes and inappropriate statements at me. I've been ignoring them, obviously I love my wife and my family, but I think it's disrespectful to you. You are so gracious and seem like a sweetheart and some of the things I saw the other night made Brittany and I both a little uncomfortable."

Daphne sniffled and shook her head, quickly wiping the tear that slipped out of her eyes. "You don't know us to say that."

"Your tears tell a different story." Santana told her softly. "Are you busy, why don't we go get some coffee? My treat, I think Starbuck's is down the street?"

"That one kind of sucks, Barnes and Noble a few blocks away has a better one." Daphne told her.

"Cool, I'm ready to check out, did you need more time?" Santana asked her.

"Just need the spray paint, I'm ready." Daphne nodded.

"Cool." Santana smiled. "I just need to text Brittany, and let her know." She pried her phone out of Skylar's hand, causing her to wake up. "Mami will give it back in two seconds." She quickly texted Brittany and handed the phone back to Skylar, her falling right back to sleep.

"You text your wife about little things like this?" Daphne asked, smiling at how cute Skylar looked, her now holding Santana's hand while she slept.

Santana nodded. "I wouldn't call going to get coffee with another woman something little."

"Oh." Daphne sighed.

Brittany was typing up a proposal when her cell phone buzzed with a text message, she saw it was Santana Dan opened the text, staring at the phone then she read that she was going to have coffee with Daphne, and tapped her pen against her desk before shrugging and putting the phone back down.

Amelia, one of Brittany's co workers walked in the office and smiled. "Ready for the big presentation?"

Brittany nodded. "Yeah." She smiled. "You use the baby sitting board for your kids, right?"

Ameila nodded, "yes all the time, we have two different girls that we use over and over."

"Can you recommend them for me, I want to take Santana out on a date for a few hours and her parents are gone back to Ohio, we are having a longer and tougher time adjusting that I anticipated, all of us, we'll aside from Skylar." She laughed.

"Sure, I can give you their contact information after the meeting." She smiled. "I can offer some suggestions on restaurants or jazz clubs if you want to hear some live music."

"That would be great." Brittany agreed happily. "Thank you so much, I don't think a jazz club this time around, I want to take her somewhere she can really just relax, we can have a few drinks and kind of forget about everything happened for a few hours."

"I thought the move was going smoothly?" Amelia questions, sitting down in one of Brittany's office chairs, when the blonde nodded to her.

"Coffee?" Brittany poured herself a cup and lifted the pot to Amelia, who nodded in reply, pouring her a cup as well, and handing it to her, carrying over her cream and sugar, setting it on a small table in front of her chairs. "It is, for the most part, but Taylor was bullied at school for having two moms, she was slapped and pushed down a few stairs, she has a handprint on her face and a bruise on her back."

"Oh my God." Amelia spit out quickly, her eyes widening. "Isn't she like 9?"

Brittany nodded. "Yeah, only in fourth grade, we had a meeting with her principal this morning, I'm thinking of looking for a different school to put her in, I need to talk to Santana about it tonight."

"Whoa..." Amelia sighed. "Well, I hope she's okay and you all get this straightened out."

"Me too." Brittany sighed. "So details on the presentation, we are flying to Chicago for a few hours tomorrow to meet with their board."

Santana carried Skylar, who was still asleep into Barnes and Noble and looked around, spotting Daphne sitting on a couch, a few children's book stacked to her. "Hey, sorry we're a little late, my mom called and she's not the easiest to get off the phone." She smiled. "What can I get you?"

"A white chocolate frap is fine." Daphne replied.

"Cool, be right back." Santana, kissed Skylar and shifted her in her arms as she walked over to the counter and ordered, ordering a cake pop for the baby when she woke up. After paying for their drinks and carrying them back over she sat down, turning Skylar to rest on her chest while she finished her nap.

Skylar stirred and opened her eyes finally, she immediately turned and hid her face in her mother's chest before popping her head up and staring at

Daphne, she quickly grabbed a handful of Santana's shirt before smiling brightly and waving at her.

"Hello." Daphne waved back. "You are so cute."

"What do you say, Sky?" Santana asked her daughter, rubbing her back.

"Thank." Skylar smiled, leaning into Santana, getting shy.

"Oh you're shy?" Santana laughed when Skylar hid her face again, she kissed the top of her head and pulled out her sippy cup from the diaper bag, tapping her hand to offer it to her, which Skylar accepted right away.

Daphne smiled at Sky and winked. "She's so cute and friendly, nothing like Yesi described."

Santana laughed, remembering Yesi's encounter with the baby. "She has her days." She set Skylar on the floor and opened one of the book for her,

pointing out different animals, knowing that would keep her busy while she stared at the pictures happily. "So, you and Yesi, listen, I'm sorry for being so blunt in the store. I just...I saw how you deflated when she talked a bout your cooking, how she chastised you when she was being inappropriate, is she always like that?"

Daphne took a sip of her drink and nodded. "Yes, she's a flirt, I'm used to it."

Santana frowned. "Why?"

"Why?"

"Why do you allow her to flirt and disrespect you?" Santana pressed. "I don't want to sound like I'm lecturing you or anything but, you only get the respect that you demand from others."

Daphne nodded. "I know, it's hard, but I hear you, we've lost a lot friends because of Yesi's behavior and people being a little uncomfortable with hanging out with us. I hope she didn't scare you two off, I really like you and Brittany, you both seem like really sweet women, and watching two people be so deep in love and how you dote on each other is heartwarming to see. I like being around love."

Santana thought for a minute, letting everything sink in. "You didn't scare us off, and we both really like you as well, not that we don't need to like Yesi." She quickly explained. "Well I'm not working during the day yet, so if you ever want to go grab a cup of coffee or something like that, let me know. You didn't scare us off."

"Okay." Daphne exhaled.

Santana smiled when Skylar saw a butterfly in the book and got excited.

"Butt fly!" She yelled loudly, tapping Santana's hand to get her attention.

"I see, baby." Santana smiled. "So pretty." She turned back over to Daphne

and smiled. "So, Brit and I aren't old yet." She laughed. "So what are spots we can go hang out at clubs, bars, live music...anything fun."

6pm

"Careful Sky!" Santana called after the baby, watching her stand back up after taking a nasty fall while chasing the puppies. Taylor looked up and ran over to her sister, wiping off her pants legs and kissing her on the cheek, she then picked up her Frisbee and started to show her little sister how to throw it.

Brittany came outside, carrying a glass of lemonade and handing it to Santana, setting down the bowl of cut up fruit she brought out with he for the girls. "What time did you want to head out to dinner?"

"Another hour or so." Brittany replied. "How did looking at preschools go?"

Santana shrugged. "Okay, I didn't like looking without you, even just browsing, so we stopped at three different ones after I left coffee with Daphne."

"Okay, we can do more looking next week, set up some tours and I'll fit my work schedule around it, I'm in Chicago tomorrow, then New York next Wednesday. I'll be home for our anniversary so don't worry." She told her, noticing Santana's face drop slightly.

"Okay, I was getting worried." She admitted softly. "I told Daphne that she deserves better than Yesi."

"Why?"

"She does, and I just kind of blurted it out by accident." Santana shrugged.

"Something about that marriage is off, I told her I'm uncomfortable with Yesi's advances and she says that she's used to her flirting with other women."

"Whoa."

"I know, I like her Brit, she's really nice, we had the most amazing conversation about her job today, Sky smiled at her, I get a good vibe from her. I told her we can get coffee and stuff on occasion, is that okay?" Santana asked.

"Yes, thanks for making sure I was okay with it, I trust you, you know that, but I don't like the vibe from Yesi. Daphne seems like a really nice woman, I wouldn't mind hanging out with her a few more times either." Brittany replied as Taylor ran over.

"Are we going to dinner?" She asked. "We're hungry."

"Yes, baby, push your sister in the swing for a little bit then we'll go."

Santana nodded before turning back to her wife. "So you really want to put Tay in a different school, don't you think that's too much moving around for her?"

"I want her safe." Brittany said sternly.

"I do too, I just...I want her emotional okay, all this moving and these sudden changes with how nervous she gets isn't good." Santana sighed.

"Why don't we fly Berkley down for a few days?"

"That's a good idea. A really good idea, I wonder if I can try to get the plane from work and use those trips to handle business in the New York office?"

Brittany thought to herself. "I have something planned for us on Friday night, I need you in your sexiest dress, wait for me at 7pm."

Santana raised an eyebrow and laughed. "Date night outside again?"

"No, I'm taking you out to dinner then I have a surprise part 2 of our date planned." Brittany smiled happily. "I have a babysitter all lined up, she's going over Thursday so you can't the girls to meet her, she's my boss' daughter, been working as a sitter with the firm for going on 6 years, she knows CPR, she can swim and works as a lifeguard."

"We are having a date night? A real one? Just us two?" Santana asked happily. Brittany nodded slowly, a huge smile on her face. "Shit, I gotta buy a new outfit for this." She exclaimed.

Brittany laughed. "I need one too."
