"The partially, nearly Naked Gun 3 : 'They Saved Crumpf's Brain'..."
Summary: Frank Drebbin is out of retirement and on the case when he learns the fanatical former president and loser candidate Fred Crumpf may not be quite as dead as he left him and he and/or his crazies including his family threaten the newly elected President Woodrowmina Wilson.
Of course, Nordberg is no longer on the squad because of, well, we never talk about that...
Part XVI...
"Ok, I have my people on the way to go through Beck's records, such as they are. The computers were wiped and I'd say someone pulled a number of files." Director Bailey noted as she and Hocken stood in Beck's outer office. The body of Beck awaiting transport within the inner.
"So you think this wasn't a murder-suicide thing…?" Hocken asked, rueful eyeing the body of one Stacy Maxwell, Dr. Beck's fortyish nurse-receptionist which had fallen from the storage closet to the floor as he'd opened it. Dr. Goebbels-Banner currently examining it at Marjorie's request.
"No, this was professional." Marjorie noted. "Seems our friends didn't want their handiwork exposed and Dr. Beck was a liability. We'd best press on to our next doctor…Dr. Unger, Captain?"
"Yeah, that's her…" Ed nodded.
"Does seem to be likely the bullet was from the same gun, though I'm no expert." Goebbels-Banner rose. "Poor woman. You really think she was just killed for being here?"
"Hard to tell…She might have known something about Beck's experiments or just been in the way…I think we'd better check on Frank…Lieutenant Drebbin, now." Marjorie suggested, a bit urgently. Frank having volunteered to scour the building for any more bodies, dead or alive.
"Yeah…" Ed agreed. Frank suddenly appearing at office door.
"Found another downstairs…I think he was a janitor or guard." Frank noted.
"Dead?" Marjorie eyed him.
"As a doornail that's been hammered into a wall…" he nodded. "As a fish that's been hooked, stuffed in a bag of ice, then gutted on your kitchen butcher's block. Say, doc, if you've ever wanted to see a full-brain exposed without the effort of surgery…" he noted to Goebbels-Banner.
Hmmn…Goebbels-Banner blinked.
"Probably another unlucky witness but my people will check him out. Boys, we'd best get moving." Marjorie urged. "Captain, I think I may want to get my people to the others asap if I might have the list of the other doctors."
"Sure…" Ed nodded, pulling slip of paper from his she pulled her cell phone from purse.
Hmmn…Well, my job is simply to observe and cooperate. Hopefully our cleaning crew is quick and any of our people caught keep their oaths not to talk till the "crew" can arrive to deal, Goebbels-Banner thought, rising.
":Looks like your profession's become deadly in certain cases, doc." Drebbin to Goebbels-Banner as the group headed to Marjorie's car. "If you decide it's too lethal, you can back out, you know."
"Oh, no…I couldn't forgive myself if I didn't do all I can to help here…" the young doctor smiled. "But, it might help if I knew more about why anyone would want to kill a great man like Dr. Beck and what this has to do with Mrs. Hocken's condition, even if she's not my patient per se."
"A good thing too…You might well be marked for death by these people or facing a lot of questions by Director Bailey's team." Frank noted. "I can't go into details but Edna Hocken's condition may not have been natural. And some of these so-called doctors may have been involved."
"Really?:" " I can't believe Dr. Beck could have been involved." Shakes head. "A very well respected man in my field."
"Beck…Was he by any chance a German?"
"Well, Austrian…He immigrated to the US about twenty years ago. Is that important?" Goebbels-Banner asked, innocently.
"Maybe, maybe not."
"Germans…And Austrians…I myself've never felt comfortable hearing how we were letting them in after the war. I've heard they even eat pet pigs. And I'm of Danish extraction myself…Afraid we aren't too keen on them since the Napoleonic Wars when the Austrians supported the British bombarding Copenhagen, then oking Sweden taking Norway from us, and then in the 1860s the damned Prussians seized Scheswig-Holstein from us." Goebbels-Banner noted, shaking head.
Nothing like establishing cred, he thought. Like Orson Welles as the Nazi pretending to be an American professor in "The Stranger" calling for the nuking of Germany to prove himself.
"As everyone knows, as to the woes of poor Denmark…" Frank nodded shrewdly. "But, we shouldn't indulge blind prejudice, doc. But this particular German or naturalized hyphen American may have been a member of a secret Nazi/neofascist/nasty billionaires who-think-their- money-makes-them-genetically-superior group operating here."
"You don't say…Whoa." The young doctor shook head.
Well, superior to you, swinehund…He thought, smiling at Drebbin.
"Come on, fellas!"Marjorie urged as Captain Hocken entered his seat in the back, despite Frank's several attempts not to be seated in front.
Hey, nothing against Janey but Frank's entitled to a life if she never comes out of the coma…Besides the back's more comfortable.
…
"So you say you were referred here by Werner Beck?" the female doctor in suit, about sixty, with rather edgy air, eyed the two women in her office.
"Yeah…Mom's been having these bad migraines…" Lorelei offering wan smile… "…and was sent by a neurologist at LA General to him for a diagnosis." Rory noted. 'He thought you might be able to help after he examined her. Especially as she feels more comfortable with a woman. He'll be sending the records over in a bit."
"I see." Nod. Smile. "Well, if Werner Beck referred you, I think I can make time today. Could you wait in my reception area? I'd like to have those records before we proceed."
"Checkin' up on us, eh doc." Ms. Wilmore, Lorelei by first name, smiled at her. "Always wise. A lady can't be too careful."
"My nurse practioner and secretary will be in shortly and they'll get you settled and ready once I have the records. If you would have a seat in the outer office, ladies, please…" she indicated the office door. Rory beaming at her.
"That's so nice of you…" warm smile.
"Thanks, doc. Bye." Lorelai smiled pulling gun with silencer while she was distracted by Rory and shooting her in head before she could go for what was clearly a gun in holster under her business suit. She collapsed on the floor as Rory headed to her compute and inserted a flash drive into a USB socket, then took seat in her chair, stepping over the corpse to reach chair and starting to click away at keyboard and with mouse.
"Ok, deletion virus inserted and chewing things up." She noted to Lorelei now busily pulling certain select paper files from a file cabinet whose lock she'd expertly broken.
"Ok, got em. Staff should be here in a moment, so lets let the not so good doc rest in peace, vamoose, and take out the security footage on the way out." Lorelei raised files in hand. "Places to go, people to kill."
"Right, all set…Out we go." Rory, pulling flash drive.
"Kinda a perv that one…Lots of kiddie porn on her hard drive." She noted to her mom as they left, she closing door. The two hurrying down hallway. Lorelai pausing to place a small bit of what appeared to be silly putty on the wall just below where a security camera box sat perched on ledge and ramming a small device into the putty.
"Ok, phone signal and she blows. Lets move it, honey." She urged Rory who hurried along and out the main door, followed by Lorelei, both assuming relaxed, strolling poses on leaving the building and descending the stairs.
"That's two." Lorelei noted as the two entered her Jeep and they immediately strapped in and she backed out, but with leisurely move, turning out of this second small medical building's lot into traffic.
"Well, so far so good." Rory noted as they headed down the main road then turned off, heading for highway. A small but definite bang behind them causing her to glance back as Lorelei continued to the highway.
"Two left to go…Nice." Lorelei noted. "And no extras in these last two."
"I like that. Even if the extras; are unavoidable sometimes, it's nice to stick to the targets." Rory noted. "Hopefully we can avoid any in our last two."
"Yeah, I prefer it…No extra mess. Well, pass me my coffee and our next port of call is Chinatown and a Dr. Evanston. This may be a little trickier, given it's later and the police have probably found Dr. Beck and co, at least, by now." Lorelei sighed. "Monitor the police and that frequency our client gave us for Homeland and Presidential Security, kiddo. We need to know if anyone's coming to our target in Chinatown."
"Chinatown? Really?" Rory nodded. "Not wanting to sound prejudiced but our client has a brilliant neurologist in Chinatown?"
"Cheap rent, little suspicion. Rory? Have you been reading files?" Lorelai frowned at her briefly.
"Never, none of my business, I know that. Confidentiality is essential. You've drummed that into me, Mom. But I can't help noticing our principles are, were neurologists."
"Well, best not to ponder that too deeply, honey. You know our motto…?"
"Ours not to question why…Ours but to make 'em die." Rory nodded.
"That my girl… Hmmn, good coffee." Lorelei noted, sipping.
"Donuts were so-so." Rory shrugged.
,
"And number two, Dr. Claire Unger, dead…" Marjorie sighed as she and Frank eyed the body of the said doctor in her office. "And all computer files purged and certain specific hard copy files removed."
"Hmmn…" Frank eyed the thin ladies' wallet he'd removed from Dr. Unger's purse on her desk. "Looks like the lady was using several passports…" he noted. "Different names…" he held up one of the passports. "Greta Hansen…Unless she had a younger sister." The picture showing the doctor about ten years younger.
"I'd say that was her original passport, Frank or at least the one she used to enter the country. It's Argentinean." Marjorie noted. "I'll haveall three run via Interpol, the OAS, and our teams." Her phone buzzed. "Bailey here?" she spoke.
"Another team found the next fellow dead in Chinatown, Evarston." She hissed to Frank. "All right, seal the office and check for anything." She told the phone.
"No one else popped…" Hocken a bit cheerily as he returned to the office door. "But the security camera was blown to bits and there was no one else in the place till we arrived."
"Our third candidate is dead as well, Captain." Marjorie noted. "I only hope my people get to the last one is time. As Frank eyed pictures on the doctor's office wall. Hocken pondering…
Shame…We coulda picked up a nice lunch in Chinatown.
"Say? Here's one of the lady with Crumpf and Banner." He noted, moving closer.
"Well, I'll be…"Hocken sighed. "I think I did see that one before but back then I was just concerned with Edna and the doctor had the right to support whomever she liked. He was the GOP candidate then."
"But clearly hers was a closer association than that of a political supporter."Marjorie noted as she closed her phone. "All right, we have a little luck. Two teams report they've reached two more of the doctors on Ed's list and are in position, with disguised agents in their buildings. Both are still alive for now."
"Can they arrest them?" Frank asked.
"Tricky…We have no proof as yet of their activities and we don't want them destroying evidence or even committing suicide. My people are in place to monitor though and they will move at any sign of activity."
"Well, if they'd all be ready to commit suicide, the joke's on the Nazi/neo fascists/greedy evil billionaires/and their ilk. Spending a needless bundle on professional killers." Frank noted.
"Well, sometimes it's not so easily to kill yourself, even if you're a fanatic." Marjorie shrugged. "We'd better head right over to doctor number four while he's still alive." She urged. "My people will go over this place carefully as well."
"Right…:" Frank agreed, Ed nodding. Frank immediately turning and stumbling over 's body, falling to knees and firing off drawn gun in hand which fired a bullet into a picture of a landscape on the opposite wall which fell revealing a wall safe. Which had been shot through in exactly the right place to cause the lock to open.
Whoa…Hocken, Marjorie, Frank, as he rose. All eyeing the open safe.
"Nice shooting Frank." Ed noted. "Well done, Lieutenant." Marjorie beamed.
"I didn't mean to…" Frank hissed to Ed as Marjorie went to the safe and peered in.
"I know…Just givin' your stock a lil' boost there, buddy." Hocken winked.
Frank frowned but looked out window to see Jane's ghost's forlorn face…
Frrrrannnkkk…
"Excuse me…" he hurried over and hastily pulled down a shade, blocking the ghostly vision. "Little too bright in here. What did the doc have in there?" he turned to Marjorie who was setting several envelopes, some cash in packets, and a steel box on the doctor's desk.
"Looks like funds for a quick getaway…Some documents…And whatever's in here." She tapped the box. "Lets see…"
"I think I saw a knife in the reception room we could use to…" Ed began as Marjorie pulled gun and fired two shots at the box.
"Or that works…" he nodded as she opened the box.
