"The partially, nearly Naked Gun 3 : 'They Saved Crumpf's Brain'..."

Summary: Frank Drebbin is out of retirement and on the case when he learns the fanatical former president and loser candidate Fred Crumpf may not be quite as dead as he left him and he and/or his crazies including his family threaten the newly elected President Woodrowmina Wilson.

Of course, Nordberg is no longer on the squad because of, well, we never talk about that...

Part XVIII...

Office of Dr. George Bailey, noted neurologist, East LA…

"Well, dang…How the hell are you, Captain Hocken? And how's that pretty wife of yours?" Dr. Bailey smiled at Hocken as he stood in his office, several agents carefully examinating his computer and files.. "Any chance you and your friends could explain why I'm under arrest and my office is being searched?"

"You're under detention strictly for your protection, Dr. Bailey." Director Bailey noted as she stood between Frank and Ed. "And this is a national security matter…You've seen the search warrant provided."

"I have, I have, no doubt about it." Dr. Bailey noted. "Say, you wouldn't be related to my cousin Thelma…There's a resemblance."

"Not that I know of,doctor…"she shook head. "But thank you for your cooperation."

Hocken looking grim…Give me just ten minutes alone with this coot and…

"Files are intact and clean, Director." One male agent in black suit reported.

"Computer's fine but we're seeing nothing….Except…" a female agent paused, looking over…

"Is this Mrs. Hocken…?" she turned the computer screen around, to show several rather revealing pics of Edna on exam table and in chair.

"Well…Yeah, well…I was you know, examining the patient…She's a very friendly woman, you know…" Bailey noted. "And she did remind me of my late wife, Madeline…That's her dress on Edna there…One of the times you couldn't come along, Ed."

"You dressed Edna up like your dead wife?" Director Bailey eyed Dr. Bailey.

"Oh, it was her choice. She saw some pictures there…On the wall, there, see?" Bailey pointed. "She wanted to see how she'd look in that grey suit."

Hocken staring…Hmmn…Actually it suits her. I wonder if they still sell that style, very elegant. Still…If this perv…

"No Nazi brain experiments…" Hochen asked, grimly, balling fists.

"Ed…" Frank cautioned.

"Nazi experiments? Ed?!" Dr. Bailey stared. "Why that's just plumb crazy? My father fought the Nazis…Why his whole life he never…"

"Ok, fine." Ed relaxed. "Would like a copy of those pics though, if I could? Especially the one in the suit?"

Frank and Marjorie exchanging glances…

"Well, I gotta save the rage for the Nazi sobs." Hocken noted. "Edna probably was in one of her moods each time. Doc? You never…" Ed eyed Bailey.

"Why Ed? What do you take me for?"

"Someone who keeps pictures of his patients half-naked or dressed like his dead wife on his computer, Doctor." Director Bailey noted dryly. "But we'll just erase them if you can give a full summary of what your records indicated about Mrs. Hocken's condition and why Werner Beck referred the Hochens to you?"

"Well…I told you Ed. I told Edna…" Bailey shrugged. "My scans indicated some areas of potential damage with possible partial regeneration."

"Is that common, doctor? Such damage? And regeneration?" Marjorie asked.

"No, no, no, no…Not common…Though it's seen to some extent in certain patients after strokes, or traumatic injury, or brain surgery…But it's quite rare. I did tell you Ed I thought we might consider exploratory surgery." Bailey noted. "As for Dr. Beck, he's a colleague, thought I'd find Edna an interesting case and might be able to help diagnose her condition."

"I see…"Marjorie nodded. "Fellas?" she indicated they should drop back.

"It's possible he's telling the truth. He could just a red herring the Crumpf people included to make the others seem legit." She noted. "Dr. Goebbels-Banner?"

"Oh, well…I couldn't say except I know of Dr. Bailey by reputation." Geobbels-Banner noted.

A fine one twenty years ago…Bit of a backward coot now…He thought. Though that made him perfect.

"Frank?" Ed eyed Frank staring at the pictures of Edna on computer…

Hmmn? "Oh, just wanted to see what I could determine…" Frank noted hastily. "Seems she was here several times during the year…Given that fur coat and the swimsuit…"

"Fur coat? Say…?" Ed blinked at screen. "That's Russian foxfur…"

"And nothing else…" Frank noted.

"She got cold during an exam in December. Brought the coat with her…I thought it was a gift from you, Ed." Bailey noted.

"A coat like that'd cost a year's mortgage on my house…" Ed shook head.

Uh-oh…Goebbels-Banner eyed the picture.

Well, no way to connect me with that.. Unless…

"And gosh-darn it, you know that coat's right here in my closet." Bailey wagged finger. "She forgot it on that visit…I meant to call about it."

"This coat?" Marjorie pulled out a Russian white fox-fur. "That's the one." Bailey nodded. "She said she'd just got it when she came in and my nurse asked about it."

Ok…Fine…But no problem unless…Goebbels-Banner paused, staring…

"There's a store label in this pocket. Hmmn…A very select shop." Marjorie pulled the label out. "Angie? Have this checked out and find out who may have purchased a coat like this at this shop in the nonth before her visit last December?" Handing label to female agent.

Uh-boy…Goebbels-Banner sighed. Still, I had my secretary buy a few of them for lady friends, my name's not on the invoice.

Hmmn…Probably wasn't a great idea to have my secretary buy several at once and in cash. But it'll take some time to id her and then me.

"Say, folks…" he hastily spoke up. The other three eyed him… "Captain Hocken. This has been a real pleasure assisting you folks this morning but I do have a surgery this afternoon at 2 pm and I should get back to my office and review. Very tricky."

"Oh…?" Dr. Bailey, curious. "What's the surgery, young fella?"

"Astroglial tumor…Nasty thing, little kid…Gotta come out. My apologizes, folks." Goebbels-Banner noted.

"I'll have you taken back to LA General, Doctor. And thanks for all your help." Director Bailey noted, offering hand which he shook, after the slightest hesitation.

"Yeah, thanks, doctor." Frank noted. "Thanks for the help, doc." Hocken nodded.

Goebbels-Banner smiling and heading out with an agent to his car…Just get back to the office, buy the first ticket on a plane to Hawaii…

"Nice young fellow…" Dr. Bailey noted. "That's a tricky one…But a little odd to do it so late in the day. Though I suppose things are rushed over at LA General. That's why I had to strike out on my own, you know. Just a bit too rush-rush for me. I like to take some time with a patient."

"So I see…"Frank noted, eyeing several more pictures.

"Well, doctor, if you'll go along with these officers…We'll just be keeping you in protective custody a few days. For your own safety, just in case you have knowledge thesie people might be concerned about." Director Bailey noted.

"Well, always glad to occperate with the authorities, ma'am. You're sure you're not Thelma's little girl?" he asked.

"Afraid not." She smiled.

Frank eyeing Ed…

"Well, Beck referred us to him. He had a good reputation ten or so years ago, when this all started." Ed noted.

"Well, too bad. Thelma's a sweet girl." Dr. Bailey noted to Marjorie. "Say, I hope that young fellow didn't offend you just then…"

"Offend me?" she eyed him.

"Well…That's sweet of you…But my cousins Thelma and Sydney were one of the first mixed-marriages. I kinda got to witness that sort of thing with some relatives back then. The kid seemed to try but you can kinda tell when they pull back like that." Bailey nodded.

"Dr. Goesbbels-Banner?" she eyed Bailey.

"Is that who that kid was? Well, Goebbels, ya know…" he nodded shrewdly.

"Oh, no, doc…He's ok. He's Danish." Frank noted. As Marjorie eyed Ed…Ed, Marjorie.
