The tension in the pre-event champions' tent was almost palpable as Harry waited his turn to face his dragon. As with the previous time, events had gone pretty much exactly the same with Harry being left to face the Hungarian Horntail. Once they had selected their dragons Fleur had gone first, followed by Krum, and then finally Cedric had gone leaving him alone in the tent. By the sound of it, Cedric's attempt seemed to have sounded more successful than either of Fleur's or Krum's, and judging by the applause and minimal amount of worried or concerned noises he had done at least slightly better than his previous attempt.

As Harry paced back and forth in the tent, listening to the sound of the applauding crowd, his mind raced along, reviewing his strategy and the list of spells he thought he'd be using in order to pull this off. While he wasn't entirely happy to be facing the Hungarian Horntail again, knowing that it was the fiercest and most dangerous of the dragons, he had woken up in the morning feeling that with his luck he was likely to face it. However, even knowing that he managed to outfly a dragon, his previous strategy relied on slightly more luck than he'd be willing to bet on again and hoped that his new strategy would help him avoid any scratches …

"Harry Potter!" Ludo Bagman's magically amplified voice echoed from outside the tent, indicating that it was his time.

Taking a deep breath to calm his nerves, Harry stepped out of the tent and into the arena, pausing for a moment to wave to the people in the stands.

The roar of the crowd was instantly deafening, but rather than focus on that he tuned it out and started mentally preparing for the event. Risking a brief glance around the rock he'd been standing behind and looking out across the pit, he saw that the Hungarian Horntail was already in position, its massive, spiked body glinting ominously in the sunlight. From his vantage point he saw that his position was still not known, as he saw the dragon's eyes were scanning the pit as if specifically aware Harry was there. Before giving up his position he ducked back behind his rock, ignoring the sound of its tail lashing against the ground with enough force he could feel the tremors in the ground from across the pit.

Turning to face the castle, Harry raised his wand and shouted, "Accio Firebolt!"

As a precaution, Harry immediately ran to the nearest rock, which would shield him from the dragon's sight, a precaution which turned out to be warranted as from his new vantage point he watched as the dragon fire engulfed the rock he had been hiding behind.

Knowing he'd have several seconds while waiting for the broom to arrive, Harry cautiously made his way towards the judge's booth, making sure he stayed out of sight of the dragon. Arriving at a spot with a good sightline of their booth he summoned a large cushion on the landing in front of the judges.

"And Potter has …" Bagman began before trailing off, sounding as puzzled as he looked as he was staring at the large cushion. "Well, it looks like he summoned a large cushion. I honestly have no idea where he's going with this, but I'm as excited to see what he plans to do with this as you all are." He shouted out to the crowd.

However, by the time Bagman had started talking, Harry was already on the move, ignoring the Head of the Department of Magical Games and Sports, his eyes scanning the sky for his broom, which shot open in excitement a fraction of a second later as he saw it shoot over the top of the crowded stands.

Without even waiting for the broom to completely slow down and stop beside him, he jumped onto his Firebolt and took off with a rush of air, an act which didn't go unnoticed by the dragon, who let out a furious roar which seemed to vibrate the air. Pulling up on the broom handle, he shot almost directly upwards and began to climb quickly, narrowly avoiding a jet of flame that the Horntail shot at him.

As he began to level off about 100 yards above the dragon, he heard Bagman's commentary barely coming over the excited noise of the crowd and the dragon's roar.

"And Potter's off! He summoned his broom – looks like he's going for the direct approach! Trying to outfly a dragon, that kids got … courage. Even Krum didn't try this."

Finally coming to a rest directly above where the dragon was staring almost straight upwards, Harry's eyes focused on the nest which he could see sticking out from beneath the Hungarian Horntail. Smiling to himself he shouted out, "Accio!"

For a second nothing seemed to happen as he heard Bagman's voice sound out, this time filled with doubt. "Looks like young Potter has miscalculated – the golden egg, his goal, is warded to prevent from one of the champions from just stepping out of the tent and summoning it. Looks like he is going to have to rethink his strategy …"

However, Harry ignored the sound of Bagman's voice as the man trailed off, a smile playing across his lips as the crowd let out an audible gasp at the site of every other egg in the nest shoot out from beneath the dragon and shoot upwards towards Harry. A sight which caused the Horntail to roar in anger, and thrash his tail violently, smashing into several of the boulders around it which it managed to almost completely demolish even though they were almost as tall as one of the carriages of the Hogwarts's Express.

"Well, I didn't see that coming. Harry has summoned the other eggs. All the eggs except the golden one are coming his way!" Bagman exclaimed excitedly.

Harry held his breath, his heat pounding as the eggs continued to approach him. When they were about ten feet from him, he cast the Banishing Charm. "Depulso!"

One by one, the eggs arced and flew directly towards the cushion he'd conjured, landing safely and perfectly in a line in front of the judges, causing the crowd to erupt into a cheer before Bagman's voice boomed over the crowd.

"Incredible! Even from that distance, Harry Potter summoned all of the other eggs and then managed to banish them perfectly onto the cushion in front of us. At least we now know what the cushion was …"

But once again, Bagman's ongoing commentary was drowned out by a furious roar from the dragon. As it, realizing that it was unable to reach Harry, let out a chain of roars, before smashing it's tail repeatedly into the ground in either frustration or anger.

From his perch above, Harry watched as the dragon seemed to glance back and forth between the eggs lying on the cushion in front of the judges, the golden egg that remained at its feet, and then finally to Harry himself, who was hovering safely out of reach on his broom. After several tense moments, the dragon seemed to make up its mind and after it shot off a brief jet of dragon fire towards Harry, which he nimbly dodged to the excitement of the crowd, the dragon turned it towards the judges.

A low growl, which just seemed to continue, emanated from the dragon's maw as it leapt to a large rock directly in front of the judges which was at the end of its chain, allowing it to stare directly at the judges.

From his position above them all on his broom, Harry almost laughed at the look of momentary panic and concern that appeared on more than half of the judges' faces as all other sound in the arena, including Bagman's commentary, seemed to cease.

Eventually the long growl trailed off and the dragon opened its mouth and unleased a large stream of fire right towards the judges …

At that moment, several things seemed to happen at once. From his vantage point, Harry watched Dumbledore jump to his feet, throw out his arm, and cast a spell, which resulted in a shimmering shield forming almost instantaneously over the heads of all of the judges. However, whether due to his younger age and reflexes or simply because he was prepared and had expected the dragon to act that way, by the time Dumbledore had jumped to his feet, Harry had already shouted "Flamma Frigidus!" Which due to Harry's intent, formed a shield above the judges on top of where Dumbledore's shield formed underneath it.

Pausing for a second, Harry watched as the initial edge of fire splashed along his shield, momentarily turning his shield a vibrant shade of red, before freezing solid into a layer of frozen fire, which in turn formed an additional layer of protection between the judges and the dragon.

As the dragon continued to spew fire towards the judges, the incoming fire eventually melted the layer of ice before hitting the shield, which as with the previous stream of fire, became another layer of ice even thicker than the last.

Even though the drain on his magic from maintaining the shield was significant, especially at this distance, with each new layer of ice, he felt a small decrease in the drain on his magic. In spite of the fact that he knew there was no way he'd be able to hold this spell for any significant amount of time, he allowed himself a smile at how well the spell was working, before immediately entering into a sharp dive, grabbing the now unprotected golden egg without even slowing down.

Holding the egg tightly under his arm he spun around to see the dragon keepers rushing forward to try and subdue or distract the dragon which had finally ceased shooting flames at the judges and was staring at Harry.

As Harry flew a lap around the arena, the crowd finally realized what had happened and erupted into wild applause which caused Harry to smile and wave at the crowd, holding the eggs above his head.

Making his way past the judge's booth, he smiled at the sight of the layer of ice cracking and melting away, leaving Dumbledore standing protectively in front of the other judges, his eyes twinkling with pride as he looked down at Harry.

Re-tucking the egg under his arm, Harry landed between the judge's booth and the dragon enclosure, looking around and waving at the sea of cheering faces that were looking over the railings of the stands, feeling a surge of relief over doing even better this time around.

Harry felt his smile grow even more when he heard Bagman's voice finally rise above the crowd's cheering, "And would you look at that!" Bagman yelled wildly. "The youngest champion is the quickest to his egg and no damage to himself or any of the eggs! We all saw how well he flew yesterday but hopefully you all got your bets in on Mr. Potter already as I think its safe to say that after this showing, he will no longer be considered a long shot in this competition, why I'd be willing to go as far as saying …"

However, the rest of his statement was cut off by the sound of a commotion right behind Harry which caused him to spin around.

As he completed his turn his eyes popped open in surprise as he was staring at the business end of a wand pointing right at him.

Forcing himself to maintain his composure, and not react, he slowly looked from the tip of the wand, which he noticed was shaking slightly, to the face of the individual carrying it, meeting Karkaroff's eyes without blinking.

"Oh hello, professor, how can I help you?" He said calmly.

"You smug little child! What were you thinking … putting the judges at risk like that?" Karkaroff pretty much spat at Harry, his hand still trembling.

Maintaining his composure as he transferred the egg to his left hand, Harry looked back at the Durmstrang headmaster and shrugged. "I didn't realize you were in danger. After all, I'm assuming that the five of you must have at least graduated, so I guess I just thought that you'd at least be able to deal with the very thing that you tasked four kids with facing. It didn't even cross my mind that we'd be set up against something that not even the five of you could outperform."

As he saw Karkaroff's hand tighten on his wand, Harry's right hand slowly dipped into his own robe.

However, before Karkaroff could do anything, Harry saw a hand reach over and grasp his shoulder, partially startling the man who spun around angrily.

"Now there is no need for that Professor Karkaroff." Dumbledore said, and though his words were pleasant, his tone was serious. "And besides the last thing I think the students need to see would be, what I imagine, would be a rather interesting fight between one of the Triwizard Champions and one of the headmasters of the other schools." He said softly, nodding as his focus shifted downwards.

This caused Karkaroff to look down, his immediately shooting open in surprise as he saw Harry's wand, also at an angle that would have been impossible to see from the still cheering crowd, pointed directly at his stomach.

Karkaroff looked back up to Harry fury in his eyes, "You dare? You put the judges at risk with your little stunt and now you raise a wand at me. I think you grow too bold, riding on the fame of defeating the greatest wizard of our time when you were just a child. If it wasn't for Professor Dumbledore's actions during the task …" he trailed off as Harry watched Professor Dumbledore apply a little more pressure to where he was squeezing his shoulder.

"Professor Karkaroff, I will not ask again. The safety of my students is a serious matter. I must ask you to lower your wand. Besides it wasn't my shield that stopped the dragon fire. While I've never seen it used as such, I assume that was a variation of he Flame Freezing Spell that was used. Wasn't it … Mr. Potter?"

If Professor Dumbledore's statement about not having been responsible for the shield caused slightly confused expressions on the faces of those gathered around them, his statement about Harry being responsible for it caused the jaws of everyone to drop as they stared at Harry in shock.

Noticing that Karkaroff had finally lowered his wand, Harry did as well before finally nodding towards Dumbledore. "Well … I don't think it was so much a variation, so much as changing the intent so that it formed a shield rather than continuously freeze am ongoing stream of dragon fire. It was something I had read about that was theorized in a book."

This caused Dumbledore's eyes to quickly shoot up before they slowly lowered into their normal places, and he smiled at Harry. "Well done, Harry! The concept of intent driven changes to spells isn't even introduced to students until their last year here. But it isn't something that even appears on the NEWTs nor that we would ever expect such competency from anyone much less a fourth year as it is a complex skill to master. I have to admit performing it with such proficiency was certainly impressive."

Karkaroff looked wildly around the assembled group, who were all staring at Harry, before looking back to Dumbledore, "You can't actually expect us to believe that?" He waited several seconds but when the serious expressions on Harry's and Dumbledore's faces did not change, he shook his head. "Even if that's true what he did was unacceptable risky to the safety of the judges … and the assembled students in the stands," he said, quickly adding the last part after a pause as if indicating it was an afterthought.

Dumbledore shrugged his shoulders, "If you feel so strongly about our safety Professor Karkaroff, you are certainly allowed to let your scoring reflect that. Although I suppose I should remind everyone that the criteria we had decided on before the match was to evaluate the Champions based on speed, ingenuity, and general proficiency in acquiring their eggs. And even the secondary criteria was only related to the safety of the other eggs." He paused seeing Karkaroff tighten his grip on his wand that was still lowered, at the same time both he saw Professor McGonagall, Professor Moody, and Hagrid approaching. "Besides Professor Karkaroff, it appears that the first of the individuals who are coming to congratulate Mr. Potter are arriving and besides the fact that two of them feel strongly for Mr. Potter, I believe you have some personal history with Professor Moody, and you would probably not want to be seen threatening one of his students, lest he misinterpret your intentions.

After several seconds of silence where Karkaroff glared at Harry, he finally stormed off towards the judge's booth.

The other judges stared at Harry with varying levels of shock and interest in their eyes before nodding to Harry and turning to follow Karkaroff. Finally, Harry was left with Dumbledore who smiled at Harry his eyes twinkling, "That was an impressive display of magic, although even I would admit that I wasn't entirely excited when the dragon landed right in front of us, seconds before it breathed fire at us … although the experience certainly does serve to remind you that you are alive." He said with a chuckle, before turning around to head towards the judge's booth, with what Harry could have sworn was a slight skip in his step. Harry chuckled and turned just as the trio arrived, Hagrid nearly knocking him to his knees with an overexuberant, 'light', congratulatory pat on his back.

While Hagrid and even Professor McGonagall were congratulating him, Harry couldn't help but notice that while Moody was congratulating him and praising his decision and execution, he seemed to be studying him more intensely than usual.

After talking to the three of them for almost a minute, Professor McGonagall finally looked to Harry and shook her head, "Alright then, Mr. Potter, it didn't look like you were anywhere near to have sustained any injury, but you need to check in with Madam Pomfrey for a quick once over. If you hurry you should be able to finish with her and make it back outside to get your score before the judges finish their deliberations … although after your run I don't know exactly what there is to deliberate about."

As predicted, other than a singular diagnostic spell, Madam Pomfrey didn't keep Harry long, kicking him out almost immediately after he entered the tent, but not before she managed to complain about the ridiculous risks the students had been subjected to, including making a brief comment about the fact that maybe it was a good thing that Harry had done what he did with respect to scaring the judges as maybe they'll take the safety of the Champions a little more seriously now.

After being officially cleared by Madam Pomfrey, Harry stood and headed towards the exit of the tent but had barely taken his second step before two people ran inside, the shorter of the two of them colliding with him at full speed as she embraced him in a tight hug.

"Harry, you were utterly brilliant!" Hermione exclaimed excitedly. "You were loads better than the others, you really were. I was on the edge of my seat, even though you never actually told us what you were thinking of doing when you had been practicing … I thought I had an idea of what you wanted to try but it was just done so masterfully." She finally paused to take a breath.

Ron nodded, "She's right mate. You were bloody brilliant. The other three were alright but even Krum, who was probably the best of the rest, ended up accidentally causing half of his eggs to get stepped on after he temporarily blinded the dragon, and it went into a panic. Blimey, I still can't believe you have to do this. I mean watching you … it was stressful. And as stressful as I found it …" he paused to look between Hermione and the nail marks on his arm, " … well as stressful as I found it, Hermione was even worse. I don't think she breathed or stopped digging her nails into my arm for the entire time from when Bagman called you out until we saw you heading for the medical tent. She was worried about you, mate."

Hermione blushed slightly as she looked towards the exit, seemingly uneasy about commenting right away. However, suddenly she turned back to Harry with one eyebrow raised. "What happened when the judges came down to you? They didn't do that for any of the other Champions."

Harry looked back and forth between Ron and Hermione, his eyebrows raised in surprise. "What do you mean? We were right in front of the crowd, I thought that's all everyone would be talking about."

"What do you mean, Harry? All we saw was the judges walking towards you, being led by Karkaroff who admittedly looked more than a little angry walking towards you, before they arrived beside you and began talking, although of course in between the distance and the cheering of the crowd there wasn't much of a chance that we could have overheard anything."

Harry stared at her in shock, as he was pretty sure that even without being able to hear what was being said the crowd should have been able to realize that things were a little more serious than just a brief conversation. However, it was Hermione who managed to figure it out as Harry saw her eyes shoot open, staring at Harry.

"An illusion spell!" she blurted out, staring unblinkingly at Harry. "Before Karkaroff reached you, all of your images wavered slightly. At the moment I just thought it was caused by the judges walking through a protective shield between the stands and the pit. But now that I think of it … that shouldn't have happened to all of their images at the same time, much less to your image, rather it should have been one by one as they crossed whatever barrier there had been to protect the students in the stands." She paused to shake her head slightly as if upset that she hadn't realized this earlier. "What happened, Harry?" She asked in a softer, curious tone.

He began to open his mouth before noticing the half-dozen people in close-ish proximity which caused him to shake his head and look back to Hermione, "Not here, but I'll tell you everything later, I'll tell you both what happened later."

Hermione began to open her mouth to argue but was cut off by the sound of Bagman's voice letting them know that after an extended delay they were ready to reveal the score of the last Champion.

Excitedly, Ron led Harry outside at a run, as they were followed by a slightly slower Hermione who looked like she would rather talk about the earlier events than just see the scores. The three of them arrived just as the silver ribbon displaying the number ten faded from above Madam Maxim's head. Her score was followed by Mr. Crouch, Professor Dumbledore, and Mr. Bagman who all also gave Harry scores of ten, although when Professor Dumbledore and Bagman gave their score, harry was pretty confident that they both looked over to Professor Karkaroff and shake their heads with a look of disappointment on their faces, although Harry was pretty sure it looked like Bagman's face also had a brief look of anger.

Finally, the entire audience seemed to shift their attention to Professor Karkaroff who hadn't immediately followed the other judges and reveal his score. Eventually the clapping and cheering from his so far perfect reveal of scores died down and an awkward silence filled the stadium, everyone waiting for Karkaroff to show his score. However, when he was still not forthcoming Bagman shook his head at the man and stood, magically amplifying his voice as he walked to the podium at the side of the judge's booth, where Harry had seen him calling the event. "Professor Karkaroff wants it to be let know that his score reflects his belief that while Mr. Potter accomplished his goal in the end, he did so in a manner that recklessly endangered the safety of the judges … and the audience."

Harry smiled slightly at Ludo Bagman's decision to mimic Karkaroff's pause from earlier.

As he watched Ludo turn around, he, along with everyone else, saw Karkaroff raise his wand in the air. After pausing for a moment, as if feeling the need to add more drama to the situation, a number finally shot out of his wand as well – a zero.

"What?!" Ron yelled out angrily at the exact moment the entire crowd burst out into hissing and jeering at the headmaster. In fact, Ron was only stopped from running towards Karkaroff by Harry's arm that had reached out and grabbed his shoulder. "A zero? What nonsense, biased garbage is that? Bollocks you care about safety! You gave Krum a ten, and not only did his dragon stomp on half of the eggs but it almost set the entire stand nearest to it on fire …" he trailed off slightly before continuing in a slightly quieter. "Of course, that was where most of the Slytherins were sitting so it's not like it would have been a great loss or anything."

Harry laughed at Ron's comment, not caring about Karkaroff's score for him, as Ron's anger combined with the fact that it sounded like the entire crowd was booing Karkaroff more than offset any disappointment he was feeling, knowing that in the end the points didn't actually mean much.

Turning to Hermione he shrugged at her questioning gaze, "The score is due to what happened earlier, I'll tell you later. Where does this leave me?" She paused for a second before looking back to him and smiling, "You are tied for first. Of course, if Karkaroff had given you even a fair penalty for his 'safety concerns' you'd easily be in first place outright." Harry shrugged again, "It was just the first task. It doesn't matter." He said, ignoring the look of shock on Ron's face.

Luckily, he was saved from explaining his attitude as Charlie Weasley chose that minute to come up to them and let them know Bagman wanted all Champions in the Champion's tent before the celebrations for the night began.

After receiving the hint from Bagman and the brushing off the man's attempt to apologize for Karkaroff's scoring he exited the tent and joined Ron and Hermione as they prepared to head back to the castle.

However, they didn't get far as shortly after they left a familiar witch jumped out of nowhere, once again wearing her acid green robes, her Quick-Quotes Quill in her hand.

"Congratulations, Harry!" she said excitedly. "That was some event. I know you want any of our chats to be official sit-downs but just wondering if you can give me a quick word about the task. And maybe about how you feel now, perhaps reflecting on the … fairness of the scoring?"

Harry paused to consider her request and looked back towards the direction they had just come, before looking back to Rita Skeeter with his gaze pausing on her quill.

She scoffed slightly before putting it away into her bag and drawing out a regular quill from a pocket within her robe. "Is this better? If it helps, even though this is an article for the Prophet, as I am covering this event, I will make sure that you and Dumbledore receive a copy of my draft before I send it off to them, and I would consider your feedback."

Harry raised an eyebrow as he stared at her before slowly nodding to her, "How I felt about seeing the dragon? It was honestly an intense experience coming out and seeing the dragon we had just been told we were going to have to face. Personally, I think there's probably safer, equally exciting tasks that they could have come up with that would have tested us." He looked towards Ron and Hermione, before taking a deep breath as he continued. "As for the scoring … I suppose it is what it is … and the safety of everyone present is a fair concern. However, between my shield and the one Professor Dumbledore had underneath, the judges were certainly not in any more danger than the Champions were."

With that he turned and started walking towards the castle but stopped after five paces and spun back to look at her, smiling at the sight of her stunned expression as she appeared to be mouthing 'my shield'. "Of course, I can add one thing that I really hope you write you got from an unnamed source and don't attribute it to me as Karkaroff is still judging me for the event and I don't want him to hold anything else against me, But hypothetically speaking, it sure looked like Karkaroff might have been looking scared when the dragon landed in front of him and the score he gave me was a result of that … but of course I have no way of actually knowing that."

And with that, he turned with a laugh and joined Ron and Hermione as he walked with them to the castle, smiling at the sound of a quill scratching on parchment, looking forward to reading Rita Skeeter's version of the task.

Story Note 1 – Intent based magic is a concept I had liked and sure it appears in other stories but the way it will be portrayed in this story (and yes it will pop up a couple times) is that if a caster focuses enough and is mentally strong enough they can slightly change the usual effect/presentation of a spell to have a different effect. However, the amount of focus/skill/magical energy used will vary depending on how much they wanted to change the effect. For instance: Causing a fire freezing spell that usually just freezes fire to change into a shield freezes fire takes less energy than changing the same spell into something that caused the fire to become sand. So theoretically if the caster is strong enough and can make the connections within their head they can use their intent to shift a spell into almost anything. This will be touched on later in a future chapter.

Story Note 2 – An illusion charm! Good catch Hermione, wonder who cast it?!

Story Note 3 – I wouldn't worry about Karkaroff getting the best of Harry in this situation by giving him that score, I have a feeling Harry will get his 'revenge' for that!

Story Note 4 – For those that might be concerned that Rita Skeeter is acting a little out of character, I would not worry. It is not as if I plan of her becoming the paragon of altruism and honest journalism. It is more so that I find her to be self-serving and driven by obtaining engagement. Because of that I feel that she realizes that having 'exclusive' rights to Harry's continued story is a once in a lifetime opportunity and therefore she is willing to accept Harry's conditions. So it is more so a relationship that certainly can benefit both parties, but also both parties are aware that it could be called off at any point.
