Disclaimer – It has come to my attention recently that I unfortunately do not own Harry Potter. Who knew.

Trusting their knowledge and confidence, Harry followed the twins as they crept silently through the shadowy corridors of Hogwarts, as they made their way to the Gryffindor common room, his heart still pounding from the heist.

"That was a bloody brilliant time, Harry," Fred whispered, his eyes twinkling with mischief as they made their way onto the seventh floor. "Karkaroff isn't going to have any idea we paid his room a visit."

"Yeah, it was an absolute delight, mate," George added, gently clapping Harry on the back.

Harry grinned as he shook his head in amazement. "I can't believe we actually did it," he whispered. "Managing to get to the Durmstrang ship, grab the book, and then make out way back here in under an hour … it just blows my mind."

Fred smiled as he shrugged his shoulders. "It's all in the planning."

"Yeah, and a bit of luck," George added with a laugh.

Amused, Harry felt a rush of adrenaline. "Thanks again guys. Okay, let's get back into the dormitory before anyone catches us."

"Well, we just wanted to make sure you managed to get up here safely, George and I probably should get back to the detention we are supposed to be serving right now. Best not push that luck too much tonight." Fred said as he looked to his brother.

Harry nodded, remembering that the twins had used the detention as a cover for their evening excursion. After saying his goodbyes to the twins and wishing them luck in navigating the castle back to the great hall, Harry silently slipped unnoticed into the common room, after donning the Invisibility Cloak, which was still buzzing with students, and from there he crept along the edge of the room heading for the boy's dormitory, his heart pounding as he hoped none of his roommates would have retired for the night yet.

As he pushed open the door to the dormitory, he let out a sigh of relief seeing that the room was as empty as he hoped. Quickly, closing the door behind him and crossing the room to his bed, he pulled the book from the bag that the twins had stored it in before giving it to him.

The moment his fingers touched the book, he felt an almost oily sensation, as if the book was coated with something slick and unnatural. But after a second the feeling disappeared only to be replaced by a warm feeling that seemed to make his forehead vibrate pleasantly. Even though part of him was slightly concerned, realizing that this wasn't normal he couldn't summon the desire to want to put the book down, rather he felt a strange compulsion tugging at him, urging him to open it. Absently as his hand approached the edge of the cover, he noticed that the title appeared to be written in another language. Then he felt his fingers close on the edge of the cover and tense prepared to give into the strange allure.

Just as he was about to lift open the cover, a hoot sounded from the direction of the window, startling him and causing his arm to drop to his side. Harry looked up to see a familiar owl perched on the windowsill, her amber eyes watching him intently as she tilted her head.

"Hedwig!" Harry exclaimed, his heart racing. He glanced back at the book and shuddered slightly realizing how close he had come to opening it despite having no actual plan to do so. Looking back up to Hedwig he smiled feeling a wave of gratitude. "Thanks, girl. Always out there looking out for me. Not entirely sure what that was and while I'm pretty sure no harm ever came from reading a book, I guess better safe than sorry, maybe I should get this sent off to Professor Dumbledore right now so it's out of the room."

With a determined effort, Harry put the book back into the bag, feeling a sense of relief wash over him as soon as it was out of his hands. Shaking off the last lingering feeling of longing to open it, he pulled out a piece of parchment and quickly scribbled a note to the headmaster.

Dear Professor Dumbledore,

I hope you enjoy this gift and find it illuminating. We should have at least a couple of weeks before we need to worry about returning it.

All the best,

Harry

PS – Be careful when handling the book. There's something off about it.

After casting a feather light charm on the bag to make it lighter for Hedwig's flight, he attached the note to the bag before gently tying it to Hedwig's leg.

"Take this right to Professor Dumbledore, Hedwig," he instructed softly. "Not sure if it'll affect you at all, but try to avoid touching it if you can, and don't let Dumbledore open the bag until he reads the note."

Hedwig gave a soft hoot of understanding and nipped affectionately at Harry's finger before taking off through the open window.

He watched her disappear into the night, heading in the direction of the tower that contained the headmaster's office, feeling a sense of accomplishment and relief.

Turning around he began getting ready for bed and as he heard the sound of the familiar voices of his dorm mates approaching the room, he couldn't help but chuckle at the thought of Hedwig pecking at Dumbledore's fingers to get his attention and prevent him from opening the bag before reading the warning in his note.

The next morning, Harry woke up with a broad smile on his face, the memories of the previous night's adventures flooding back to him, and for the first time in what felt like ages, he felt more than just the faintest of sparks of hope over the future. He felt lighter and more optimistic, as if a burden had been lifted from his shoulders or at least the weight of the burden had been lessened.

He rolled over and jumped out of bed before nudging Ron, who was still snoring slightly. "Wake up, Ron," he said, shaking his friend's shoulder.

Ron groaned and pulled the blanket over his head. "Just five more minutes," he grumbled from under the covers, his voice muffled.

Harry chuckled and pulled the blankets off of him. "Come on, Ron. Breakfast awaits."

At the mention of breakfast, Ron opened one eye and then the other. "Breakfast you say?" he asked, sitting up slowly.

"Yup, the sooner you get up, the sooner we eat." Harry said grinning. "It's the same thing every morning."

Ron stretched and yawned before finally getting out of bed. "Alright, alright. I'm up."

The two of them quickly washed up and got dressed, before heading down to the common room. As they descended the stairs, Harry spotted Hermione sitting near the fireplace, already reading a book. He ran over to her, his smile clearly obvious and after dragging her to her feet and picking her up, he spun her around in a circle.

"Harry! What are you doing?" Hermione squealed, her face turning bright red with embarrassment. "Put me down!"

He gently set her down and smiled at her ignoring Ron's laughter. "I'm just having a terrific morning and I'm happy to see you."

Hermione blushed even more as a smile forced its way onto her face. "Well, I'm glad to see you are in high spirits this morning."

Nodding, Harry looked back to Ron before facing Hermione again, "Plus that sort of greeting was easier with you than it would have been with Ron."

After a brief laugh, the trio made their way to the Great Hall for the promised breakfast, where Harry's good mood turned out to be infectious. For the entirety of breakfast, he had Ron and Hermione, and Neville and Lavender when they finally came down and decided to join them, smiling and laughing with him.

After they finished eating, and Ron, Lavender and Neville, had left to head back to their common room for their free period, Harry turned to Hermione, "You can go on to Ancient Runes without me. "I'll either catch up en route or see you there. I need to see Fred and George for a second." He said motioning to the twins who were sitting halfway down the table.

Hermione raised an eyebrow. "What are you up to Harry?"

"Nothing at all. just need to thank them," Harry said with his best imitation of an innocent smile.

Hermione stared at him suspiciously for several seconds before finally nodding. "Alright, but don't be late for class."

"I wouldn't think of it," Harry assured her.

After watching Hermione head off to the exit from the hall, Harry turned and made his way over to where Fred and George were talking with Alicia and Angelina, approaching them with a grin on his face. "Morning, you lot!"

Spinning around the twins turned to him with smiles on their faces, "Morning, Harry. What can we do for you on this fine morning?"

Harry laughed and shook his head, "I'm just having a terrific morning and wanted to thank you again."

This caused both Alician and Angelina to look at the twins suspiciously.

"What were the two of you up to now?" Alicia asked, crossing her arms.

"Trying to corrupt Harry now, are you?" Angelina added, shaking her head.

Fred and George threw their hands up in mock innocence. "We didn't do anything! We maintain our innocence." Fred said.

Seeing the matching looks of disbelief in the Chaser's eyes, George looked back to Harry before spinning to the girls. "It was Harry's fault; he came to us." He said, trying to look serious but failing as a grin spread across his face.

The girls glanced at Harry, before looking back to the twins, not believing George's last statement.

"Harry don't let these two corrupt you," Angelina said, shaking her head. "You could do so much better than these two."

"You two don't seem to mind us though," Fred said shrugging his shoulders.

Alicia smiled before shaking her head, "It's too late for us. Trying to help out a teammate from making the same mistake we made."

After a moment of silence, the four of them burst into laughter, which Harry quickly joined in on.

"Seriously though, thanks," Harry said once the laughter died down. "I owe you one."

"Anytime, Harry." Fred said, clapping him on the back.

"Yeah, anything to stick it to … no one, because nothing happened," George added with a smirk that Harry watched him direct at the Chasers.

With a laugh, Harry nodded and said his goodbyes, heading off to Ancient Runes, with a spring in his steps that he heard the twins laughing at as he made his way down the aisle.

As he made his way through the corridors on the way his class, he noticed a group of third-year students, both Gryffindor and Slytherin, clustered together in front of a classroom door, blocking his path.

As he tried to make his way through the blockade, his presence was noticed by some of the individuals, one of whom was Demelza Robins, one of the alternate Chasers on the Gryffindor Quidditch Team.

Spotting him, she called out, "Harry! Over here!"

He turned around and smiled politely to the approaching girl. "Oh hey, Demelza. How's it going?"

She walked over to him, her cheeks turning a slight shade of pink. "Hi Harry. I just wanted to say, ummm, that was really impressive what you did in the first task of the tournament."

"Thanks." Harry said, feeling a bit self-conscious. "Just made sure I was prepared, but honestly do not want to go through that experience ever again in my life. I'm done with it. Sorry though I should be getting to class …"

Demelza nodded before giggling nervously, a sound that seemed to surprise her, as she twirled a strand of hair around her finger. "I was wondering if … well, if you don't have a date for the Yule Ball, would you maybe … want to take me?"

Harry was taken aback, not having expected this at all. He glanced around trying to think of an appropriate response to politely decline. As he looked around, he saw Ginny standing a little ways off, her expression stormy as she glared at the back of Demelza's head. Harry felt a pang of awkwardness but quickly composed himself.

"That's really nice of you to ask, Demelza," Harry said gently. "But I'm afraid I already have plans for the ball. I do appreciate the offer tough."

Demelza's face fell slightly, but she managed a smile and shrugged. "Oh okay. What kind of Gryffindor would I be if I didn't at least try to cast my charm. Maybe another time then." She said hopefully, before turning around quickly to prevent drawing out the situation.

Just as Harry thought he was in the clear and was preparing to turn, another student stepped forward. This one was a blond Slytherin girl who looked vaguely familiar, but for the life of him he was having trouble placing where he knew her from. She opened her mouth to speak but Harry quickly shook his head, "Sorry, I really need to get to class," he said, glancing down the length of the hallway. "At this rate, I'm going to be late and my Runes partner, who I'm finally getting along with, will kill me if I don't make it to class on time."

As if cued, the clock down the hallway began to chime and at that moment the door that the students were all standing in front of swung open revealing the transfiguration professor. As Professor McGonagall began ushering the third years into her classroom, her sharp eyes noticed Harry among her students.

"Mr. Potter, why aren't you in class?" she questioned, her voice stern. "If I recall correctly, you are currently supposed to be in Ancient Runes. I'd be very disappointed if, especially all the work you did to get into the class and after all the positive things I've heard from Professor Babbling, you suddenly decided to start skipping class just because you managed to complete a task in the Triwizard Tournament."

Harry opened his mouth to respond but shut it quickly knowing there was no response that would satisfy her. "Sorry, Professor." He said before sprinting down the hallway.

He reached the Ancient Runes classroom just as Professor Babbling was about to shut the door. She paused for a second before smiling warmly at him. "Ah Mr. Potter. I'm glad you hadn't decided to break your attendance streak."

Harry returned her smile. "I wouldn't miss your class for anything, Professor."

He entered the room and took his seat beside Daphne Greengrass, who Professor Babbling had partnered him up with as she had a policy to split students from the same houses to try and promote inter-house cooperation. Daphne glanced at him, nodding as he sat. "Good to see you, Potter. We are supposed to start on our project today and working on it alone would be less than enjoyable. Besides, I've come to view you as an adequate partner in the class."

Harry chuckled quietly as he dramatically clutched his chest, in a very Weasley twin-like exaggerated manner, which was thankfully unnoticed by Professor Babbling who had just walked by their desk. "An adequate partner? Was that an actual compliment, Greengrass?"

Daphne shook her head, a small smirk on her lips. "Don't get used to it."

Looking back to the front of the room, Harry saw Professor Babbling raise her hands which silenced the usual hum of pre-class chatter.

"Good morning, everyone," she began, her voice excited. "Today, I have some important announcements, regarding the structure of our lectures for the next two months. For the first part of each class we will continue with our regular lecture material, delving into the complexities of runes and their applications. However, for the latter half of the classes, as promised we will be starting our projects, so you will be working with your partner, in pairs, to develop your own runic sequence that actually functions for a specific purpose."

Harry glanced at Daphne, who was already scribbling notes with an expression of interest on her face.

"This project will be worth a significant portion of your grade, so I want you to think of something unique, it doesn't need to be nearly as complicated as the runes that allow a broom to fly, but I'd prefer to not look at fifteen variations of the same idea. I want something with a real purpose and while it doesn't need to be reuseable, after all some of the most common runic sequences burn out after only one use, it should at least be stable for the duration of its intended use." She paused for a second to clear her throat before continuing. "For today's class we will spend it brainstorming ideas in your pairs and deciding what the issue or problem is that you want your rune sequence to solve or overcome. I'll be coming around to chat to all the pairs, but a good place to start might be to discuss where you've seen runic arrays and build from there. That might help spark an idea. But remember, I want something unique, not just a repeat of something that is already done."

As the class split into their pairs, Harry ignored the sounds of scratching quills and murmured discussions as their classmates began bouncing ideas off each other, he looked at Daphne, noticing he could already see the wheels turning.

"So, what do you think?" Harry asked.

Daphne looked up from her parchment, a thoughtful look on her face. "Well, obviously we'll need to do something unique but I want to be the best. I don't want to just submit a locket with protection runes on the back … even though we might be ok if the locket not only protected but also enhanced the user's magical or physical abilities. Something that could be used offensively as well as defensively."

She paused for a second, but before Harry could respond, saying that sounded like a good idea to him, she shook her head. "No, we should stay away from that. I'm sure others might have that idea, and honestly I'm guessing it's harder than it seems and I can't even begin to think of how to stabilize two rune sequences that would basically be doing opposing actions …"

Harry nodded, "That's too bad, although sounds like something that would be worth looking into, if not now than later, can you imagine being the witch or wizard who came up with something like that."

She looked over to him in surprise, as if remembering he was there, before nodding. "Any ideas that we could do for this?"

Harry shrugged his shoulders. "I'm not sure, honestly until I started this class I was almost completely unaware of the power or uses of runes or how they differed from spells. But I think Professor Babbling had a good suggestion. Rather than focusing on what we want the rune to do, maybe we should think of a problem or a need. And then from there could try to think of something that could be used/done to fix that."

Daphne looked at him thoughtfully. "Okay, that's … actually a good idea. What kind of problem though? With magic, most tings are really good. We can cover great distances easily, whether by Floo, Knight Bus, or Apparation, even untalented wizards and witches can manage to learn a variety of household spells without much trouble, …"

"Communication," Harry blurted out.

Daphne shook her head as she chuckled. "There are already so many options available – owls, enchanted notes that fly to the recipient, Floo calls, …"

Harry shook his head. "Those are fine, but owl messages and notes take time especially over distances. And while Floo calls are great, minus the smoke inhalation, you need to know exactly where the person you are trying to contact is and that location needs to be near a fireplace."

Daphne's laughter faded as she looked at him with renewed interest. "Okay you … may be onto something. It would be convenient to be able to communicate directly and immediately, without needing owls or being confined to specific areas."

Harry's mind wandered to the mirrors that his father and Sirius had used while they were younger. He smiled at the thought as he looked back to Daphne. "What if we found a rune sequence that could be inscribed on an object that would allow them to contact each other directly, letting them communicate instantly?"

Daphne's eyes widened, "Harry, that's …" she paused, shaking her head. "Sorry, Potter, that's our idea. But while it sounds simple enough I'm not sure how difficult it would be in practice. The runes might not work together or maybe it would need to much magic to power something like that. But if we could do it …" her voice trailed off, excitement dancing in her eyes.

She looked down and frantically began looking through her book, scanning through the glossary of rubes. After a moment, she looked back up at Harry, her face alight with determination. "This could be big, even if it doesn't work we should try it and I'd bet Professor Babbling would like to see something like this." She said, her smile bright and infectious.

Harry nodded, feeling the thrill of the challenge ahead. They started flipping through their books, brainstorming and discussing which runes might be useful. As they worked, Harry briefly considered reaching out to Sirius one evening to see if there was some way he could get his godfather to talk about his mirror, which would allow Harry to find out if it was enchanted or if it used runes. But he quickly shook his head and smiled. He wanted to see if he could create a similar object from scratch, without relying on what his father and godfather had already created.

As they chatted, Harry and Daphne identified several runes that could potentially be helpful, listing them on a piece of parchment, taking breaks every so often to debate the properties of the runes and which ones they might interact with the best to carry out what they wanted.

While Harry was looking at a page about knowledge runes, he heard Daphne clear her throat.

"So why were you late to class?" Daphne asked casually, not looking up from what she was writing. "Granger was almost looking panicked when Professor Babbling went up to the door to close it."

"Almost … I was almost late." Harry corrected with a smile.

Daphne shook her head slowly. "Okay, Potter, why were you almost late to class?"

Harry snorted softly as he shrugged his shoulders. "I was ambushed in the hallways." He smiled when Daphne looked up at his in surprise. "Got stopped by a group of third-years. And then one of them asked me to the Yule Ball."

Daphne raised her eyebrows. "I'm surprised you aren't late for all your classes if that was the scenario. What did you say?"

Harry chuckled as he shook his head. "Tell me about it. Sick of all the attention. But I told her no, said I already had plans."

Daphne's expression was unreadable as she continued to work. "Well, let's hope you don't let those plans distract you from our project."

"Wouldn't dream if letting them," Harry said with a grin, as he looked back to the page, he'd been looking at earlier. He managed to make it through the next couple pages before he noticed Daphne wasn't writing yet. Looking up he saw her staring at him.

"What?" he asked confused.

"What do you mean, what? I try my hardest to ignore all the gossip that goes on but even I've noticed the whispers about who you're going to take. And to the best of my knowledge Brown and Patil are confident that you haven't asked anyone yet. And then you make some comment that you already have plans. Who are you taking?"

Harry almost laughed as he looked over to her with an eyebrow raised, "I didn't know you were interested in who I'd be taking to the Ball."

Daphne shrugged, "You have to admit it's an interesting topic, plus Tracey will die if I found out before she did. Who are you going with?"

Harry hesitated before looking across the room at a familiar bushy head of hair, before looking back to see Daphne staring at him. "Really?" She asked, obviously having seen who he was looking at.

Harry felt himself growing slightly angry at her response. "'Really?' What do you mean by that? Who could you judge …"

Daphne cut him off mid sentence with a wave of her hand. "Grow up Potter. I have nothing against Granger. If anything, before you had a change in work ethic this year I wouldn't have thought you were good enough for her. Honestly, it was more surprise, as despite how close the two of you and Weasley are, Tracey wondered if either of you boys would ever look at her that way. And I was just worried that it was going to be Weasley who realized it first and tried to do something about it."

"Oh," Harry said looking at Daphne.

She shook her head. "Still not entirely sure what she'd see in you, but I suppose you've been better this year and she could probably do worse. Have you asked her yet?"

Harry paused before slowly shaking her head.

Daphne scoffed as she looked at him. "Were you just expecting her to wait for your invitation forever? For your sake, I'd recommend you think about getting around to asking her sooner rather than later. I see her a bunch in the library when Tracey and I are there and I doubt she'll be available if you wait much longer."

Harry looked up in surprise towards Hermione before looking back to Daphne, finding his partner had resumed looking at the book in front of her, seemingly content to ignore Harry unless he had something about their project to discuss.

Harry and Daphne were the last pair to discuss their idea with Professor Babbling who was so interested in their idea that their conversation ran several minutes after the class had ended. By the time they finished receiving praise from Professor Babbling over the ingenuity of their idea, the rest of the class, including Hermione, had already left. Therefore Harry found himself walking alone to where he and Hermione had told Ron they'd meet him. Coming around the final corning Harry saw Hermione had already beaten him there and was currently shaking her head at Ron who was trying to balance a quill on his nose.

"How was Ancient Runes?" Hermione asked as Harry got close.

'Productive," Harry said as he joined them. "We made a lot of progress with our idea and Babbling seemed to think the idea was alright.

"That's great, Harry," Hermione said, looking to him and smiling. "I knew you'd enjoy the class and Greengrass is a good partner."

Ron dropped the quill and looked to Harry a questioning look on his face. "So … who is the girl?"

Harry blinked, caught off guard. "What girl?"

"The one who asked you to the Yule Ball," Ron said grinning. "Rumors going around the school already this morning that you were asked after breakfast."

Harry felt Hermione staring at him as he rolled his eyes. "It was just Demelza. She asked in front of the third years."

Ron snorted before chuckling. "Bet Ginny wasn't too happy about that."

"Yeah, she didn't look it." Harry admitted. "But what can you do?"

Hermione looked to Harry a curious look on her face. "So, who are you thinking of taking to the ball, Harry?"

Harry froze for what felt like an entire minute before looking between his friends and mumbling. "I'm … I mean … I …" At a loss for words he shook his head before turning and heading down the hallway to their next class.

As Harry started down the hallway, Ron and Hermione exchanged a look, but before they could say anything the clock down the hallway tolled indicating their break was over.

The rest of the day passed quickly and before he knew it, Harry found himself back in a corner of the common room, seated across a chess board from Ron. The fire crackled, causing Harry to look up and meet Ron's surprisingly serious expression.

"When are you going to ask her?" Ron asked.

Harry blinked in surprise. "What are you talking about?"

Ron leaned back in his chair, his eyes never leaving Harry's. "Hermione. When are you going to ask Hermione to the Yule Ball?"

Harry was taken aback. "What? Ron, what are you talking about?"

Ron scoffed and shook his head. "I'm not oblivious, Harry. Well … I'm not completely oblivious. I can see things are changing between the two of you."

Harry opened his mouth to deny it but paused, seeing his friend staring at him. "Are you okay with it? You're not jealous?"

Ron stared intently at the chessboard for a moment before looking back up. "Honestly, mate, I might have been. But everything seems different now. Things are going wonderfully with Lav. Maybe if things had gone a different way this year, I might have been. But I'd be okay with that."

Harry looked at Ron, his face serious. "So, you'd be okay if I asked her? It wouldn't make things weird for us?"

Ron laughed. "Mate, I'm really enjoying getting to know Lav. We have a lot in common and while I like Hermione, I don't like her like her. Just as long as you promise that when me, you and Hermione hang out it doesn't become you and Hermione … and me."

He looked back at the board, thinking for a moment before a smile spread across his face. "Oh, and Harry?"

"What's up?"

"Checkmate," Ron said with a grin as his knight moved, cornering Harry's king.

Story Note 1 – Harry's reaction to the book. Why was it different than when George grabbed it in the ship? Congrats to the couple of messages I've received stating guesses. Had two already that were really close. Will look into this more in detail in a future chapter but just for clarity.

Part of it is that during their heist George very quickly put the book in the bag, not having a desire to open it. Another part of it is that Harry, due to his experiences, is more in tune with Dark magic (killing cursed twice, tortured, …). And finally the part that will definitely come up later is that there might be something in Harry (hmmm I wonder what) that is drawing him to the book. To answer a question, there is no need to assume that whatever is drawing Harry to open the book is necessarily bad, its just unnatural. And better to open the book with a clear mind.

Story Note 2 – "No harm ever came from reading a book" – congrats to anyone who recognized the line. One of my favorite movies from when I was a kid!

Story Note 3 – 'Cast my charm' just in case it was missed was not a literal reference to casting charms but rather the wizarding equivalent to 'shooting my shot'

Story Note 4 – And Harry will finally ask Hermione on the date. Excited for next chapter! And for clarity's sake this was not Harry asking Ron permission to take Hermione. But rather just making sure his friend was going to be alright.
