Ratchet quickly ordered Bulkhead to the med bay with Arcee, placing her on the medical berth as he began his work. The damage wasn't life-threatening, thank Primus, but she'd be out of commission for a while. Which was surprising given, who had fired the shot. A direct shot from their canon should be lethal, or at least leave a bot in critical condition. That Arcee only came out of it with burnt, dented armor and bruised mesh meant that his intention wasn't to kill her. With no massive energon bleeding to stop, he began tending to Arcee's wounds as the rest of the team entered the base. Their yapping and questioning weren't going to help him do his work any better or faster. Optimus was back, the mission was a success, and everyone had returned safe-
"Where's Jack?"
Ratchet's thoughts crashed as the meaning of what they'd done struck him. In their haste to bring back Optimus, they'd left behind their friend. The one who risked his life to bring back their leader, and the one they swore they'd protect.
"I'll ask again. Where is my son?" All optics were now on June Darby as she stepped toward the railing that overlooked the med bay. She spoke calmly but her eyes pierced the sparks of everyone around. "How could this have happened? He was with you. You said he was with you."
Ratchet opened his mouth to speak but stopped as Arcee suddenly began sitting up, struggling to push herself up by her elbows. He tried to gently lay her back on the berth but she shrugged him off as she began to speak.
"I had him, he was in my arms. We were only steps away from the ground bridge when I got hit and dropped him."
"Did no one see him fall? Why did no one pick him up?"
Whirs and beeps from Bumblebee answered June's questions as Raf translated for his friends. "You were providing cover against Megatron, and didn't even know Arcee was injured until Ratchet ordered Bulkhead to carry her, so you thought Jack had already made it through. But if you were fighting against Megatron, wouldn't you have seen him fire at Arcee?"
"It wasn't Megatron who hit me. Our rear was left unguarded. We weren't expecting anyone to come through the space bridge. Least of all, Shockwave." Replied Arcee.
"Shockwave? Is he related to Soundwave? Does he also have no face?" Miko asked.
"Yeah actually. The guy's only got one creepy red optic." Bulkhead answered. "He's one of the smartest cybertronians in all of history but boy does he have a screw loose. He created some of the most deadly weapons during the war and regularly experimented on Autobots he captured. Pulling them apart and putting them back together in the most twisted ways. The bots he worked on, were never the same afterward."
"And how come we're just now hearing about this guy? I feel like we should've gotten a warning about a mad Decepticon scientist who enjoys mutilation." Agent Fowler commented from his spot behind June and the kids.
"Because he's supposed to be dead." Arcee spitefully answered. "He was chasing Cliffjumper and me through a space bridge on our way here to Earth. I shot him in the optic before the space bridge collapsed and exploded. I hoped that would be the last we ever saw of him, but he survived somehow and has been living on Cybertron all this time."
"Either way we can't leave Jack there with bucket head and the cyclops. We need to head back there and grab him!" Bulkhead yelled as he smashed his fists together.
"And walk right into a Decepticon trap!?" Ratchet exclaimed. "They'll be waiting for us, and Arcee is in no condition to return to the field right now. We can't leave Jack there with those two monsters but it would be foolish to face them head-on where they'd be expecting us."
"But it would be wrong to leave behind our friend." Optimus countered. "He and the rest of the children have risked their lives many times to aid us in our battles. I entrusted him with the key and sent him on a journey to our world. We cannot leave him in the clutches of Megatron after all he has done. The more time we spend discussing our next course of action, the more danger we leave Jack in."
Optimus turned to face the empty ground bridge, preparing himself for what was to come in the next few moments. Images of unfamiliar sights, sounds, and faces flashed through his processor as he recalled the unfamiliar memories. He wasn't too surprised to find himself with no recollection of how he ended up in the cave, it meant that his worries about what would happen after the battle with Unicron were not unwarranted, but that his contingency plan with the key and Jack was a success. But it had come as a surprise to suddenly recall details of the boy's life. It shouldn't have been possible, Jack was human; though Optimus had pushed those thoughts temporarily to the side at the moment as he dealt with Megatron. He intended to talk with Jack and Ratchet about the implications that these memories brought up when they returned.
"Rafael, open the ground bridge. Arcee will stay here, while the rest of us return to the cavern and safely return Jack."
Arcee looked ready to disagree, but a glance from the prime halted any arguments. Optimus and the rest of the team readied their weapons as the ground bridge opened with a powerful flash of light. Wasting no time, the team rushed through.
The sudden reinforcement Megatron received from the other side of the space bridge had taken him off guard momentarily. His chief scientist had long ago thought to be dead after all, and the sudden appearance had taken the Autobots off guard. It was not enough, however, to fully stop the Autobots from retreating. Megatron stopped in his rush where Optimus once stood and released a guttural roar. After not so quite calming down, he turned toward the Decepticon scientist who was now kneeling before him.
"It has been quite a while Shockwave. I was under the impression that you had perished on Cybertron. Though I should've been more hesitant to believe anything in a report written by Starscream."
"Reports of my demise were greatly premature my liege. I awoke in the rubble of the space bridge, blinded and abandoned on our desolate planet and with no means of communication. In time, I repaired my wounds and continued my experiments. Until today that is. My instruments detected an energy signature nearby that I presumed to be a space bridge portal."
Megatron grunted in affirmation, and turned toward the space bridge controls, shutting down the still-active portal. "With all of that time alone to satisfy your spark, I presume your experiments have achieved results that will benefit the Decepticon cause?"
"At first I had revitalized my research of the Predacons, but it was then that I realized that I was not alone. There is an Autobot city, deep underneath the surface, named New Kalis. Occasionally, a resident would venture too far from the safety of the city. I'd capture them, and use them to complete my current project."
Quizzically, Megatron raised an optic ridge as he turned back toward him. "And what would that be?"
"Creating artificial triple changers." Shockwave answered. "They occur naturally but are extremely rare. I've been experimenting, combing frames, and modifying T-cogs. My latest trial is looking most promising and if successful means that more powerful drones can be deployed. Though I believe the greatest potential lies in combining it with my past Predacon project."
Megatron was silent for a moment, before releasing a dark laugh that reverberated off the cave walls that surrounded them. "I look forward to seeing your results, and the tactical advantage your presence will bring in our war against the Autobots. A shame however that they all managed to escape after bringing back their precious leader."
"Not all of them my lord." Responded Shockwave as he stepped closer to the strange creature that was lying unconscious on the floor. "The blue femme was carrying this creature, and the Autobots abandoned it in their haste to retreat."
Picking up the limp body, Shockwave presented it to his master, who released another sinister laugh when he recognized the boy.
"Another tactical advantage to use at my disposal. Oh how distraught the Autobots must be when they realize they've left behind their pet. Hand him to me."
Shockwave carelessly handed him over to Megatron, dropping him into his waiting claws. "The boy who helped rescue the leader of the Autobots. Prime is going to regret ever entrusting you with that key." Activating his commlink and calling for a ground bridge, Megatron turned to address his chief scientist. "Join me aboard the Nemesis, it won't take long for the Autobots to notice what they've left behind. We can discuss in more detail your experiments and how we will move forward."
Shockwave nodded in confirmation and stepped toward the portal that appeared in front of the pair. No sooner had Shockwave entered the bridge and Megatron was but a step away, a second ground bridge appeared from where the Autobots had originally retreated from. He grinned maniacally as he faced the Prime and his rebels with their weapons already drawn, ground bridge to his back. Megatron halted any attacks they may have planned as he held Jack out in front of him.
"You should keep a tighter lease on your pets Optimus. Otherwise, someone else will take what is yours. I'll be sure to take excellent care of him."
Taking a simple step backward, Megatron escaped through the ground bridge unharmed.
The first detail Jack picked up on was the rhythmic, booming sound of heavy pedesteps. It's a sound he feels all too familiar with, inside the confines of the Autobot base. He secretly hoped it was Ratchet carrying him. Every bone and muscle in his body ached, desperate for relief in some way. It felt uncomfortable to take deep breaths, and his head was throbbing but what hurt the most at the moment were the burns. His skin felt tender and the sway from every step caused his raw skin to rub against the material of his suit, causing further irritation and pain. The Autobots are more gentle than this, but the hand holding him was tight, constricting, and making his injuries worse. Lethargically, Jack opened his eyes to ask whoever was carrying him to please be more gentle. He tried to gasp in shock but all that came out of his mouth was a pitiful croak as his side flared in pain.
High ceilings lie above him, but not that of the Autobot base. There were no rocky walls or girders with light fixtures above him. Instead, metal walls and deep purple lighting surround him as red optics meet his own blue human eyes.
"I'm glad to see that you have not succumbed to your wounds. It would do me no good if you had perished before I could make use of you."
Jack remained silent as panic raced through his mind. He was a captive aboard the Decepticon warship, and was being held in the clawed servo of Megatron, who was walking alongside a second Decepticon he hadn't noticed until now. Jack recognized them to be the one he saw right before he passed out. He didn't know their name and the Autobots had never mentioned anyone like him before. This was the worst kind of situation he imagined he could find himself in; a prisoner and now there was a new con to worry about. His eyes darted around the environment, searching for anything that could possibly help him, no matter how slim. But seconds of searching only made him realize how hopeless that idea was.
The hallway was empty, nothing for him to use. No random computer that was somehow his size that would let him contact the Autobots, no random piece of rebar to use as a weapon. What would he even do with something like against Megatron and that new Decepticon? He was completely at the mercy of the leader of the Decepticons. But a burning question lingered in Jack's mind as he thought over his predicament.
"Why?"
The warlord looked down at him in confusion for a moment. "Come again?"
"Why would it do you no good?" Jack replied steely, pushing down the pain in his chest as he continued. "What use would you have for me? Why not just kill me? I know you hate all humans, especially me. Why didn't you just get rid of me?
For a moment, Megatron didn't reply as they continued their walk through the Nemesis. "Optimus entrusted you with the Key to Vector Sigma. You, a lowly fleshling and not one of his own Autobots. He saw something in you that he thought of as worthy enough to carry one of Cybertron's most precious relics. Optimus trusted you, and I intend to use that trust against him. You have information I want, information that I will get."
"How can you be so sure that you'll get that information?" Jack asked.
Megatron responded by tightening his grip around Jack's torso, squeezing the air out of his lungs and further aggravating all of his injuries. "Oh, how easy it would be to simply keep going until your bones were grounded into dust. Unfortunately, you must remain intact. Organics are much more difficult to put back together." Loosening his hold, Megatron continued as the boy sucked in mouthfuls of air. "Do not believe I will show you the same mercy you gave to me in that cave. I'm sure that's a decision you regret making. You will break and be the reason for the downfall of the Autobots."
Jack couldn't muster the energy for a snarky reply as gulped down breaths of air and tried to soothe the pulsing pain in his chest, as pitiful as it was. Those bruised ribs were likely to be in a much worse condition now. He tried to familiarize himself with the layout of the ship, memorizing the route they were taking but every hallway and door they passed looked the same.
Eventually, they stopped in front of a door that looked no different than any of the others they had passed earlier. The door seamlessly opened, and the three stepped in. In the center of the room were Knockout and Breakdown, the latter laying on a medical berth and the former quickly noticing his new guests.
"Lord Megatron! And Shockwave!? I heard from Breakdown you were investigating the space bridge, what happened there? And why are you carrying one of the Autobot's little pets?"
"That is not your concern at the moment." Megatron spat, striding over to an empty workstation and carelessly placing Jack on it. "Take care of the human. Make sure he doesn't perish from whatever wounds he has before I can make use of him."
Knockout's face fell as he tried to process what he'd just been ordered. "You want me to take care of the fleshling? I don't know anything about organic biology! Their insides are mushy and none of my tools would likely even work on him. They'd be more likely to kill him."
"Then I suggest you learn quickly. I have no use for a medic that can't repair what I order them to." Megatron scolded. Knockout looked like he wanted to retaliate further, but wisely kept his mouth shut. Megatron turned to leave the room but stopped just at the edge of the door and he addressed the medic once more. "And once you've completed that, prepare a laboratory for Shockwave. He'll be returning to Cybertron to gather his supplies and will be continuing his experiment aboard."
"O-of course, my liege."
Jack watched as Megatron stepped through and the door quickly shut behind him, leaving him with the Decepticon medic.
Optimus passed another semi in the opposite direction on the late-night Nevada highway. He'd been driving on this stretch of road for well over two hours now, it'd be best to turn back. When the road was clear he slowed to a safe speed and turned back in the direction of the base. Headlights lit the empty road that stretched in a single direction for miles as he sulked in his thoughts.
In a pitiful attempt, they'd fail their mission to bring back Jack. They returned through the ground bridge solemnly, no words were spoken and yet everyone knew. June's face had been stricken with anguish and almost too quiet for anyone else to hear, asked Agent Fowler to keep her updated as she got in her car and left.
Agent Fowler had left shortly after, stating that he needed to talk with his superiors in the human government about the situation. The Prime hoped he would return soon with good news, no matter how small.
In the hands of the Decepticons, Jack was not safe. Agent Fowler had been captured before and though he was rescued the same day, he did not escape uninjured. They had gotten lucky that day; at the time, they had the location of the Nemesis, allowing their response to be quick. No such luck favored them today. Optimus tried not to dwell on what that might mean for Jack but it was the reality that he could not ignore. They could only hope that they could rescue him before it was too late.
Optimus continued to drive, lost in his mind until a voice crackled through his commlink, grabbing his attention. "Optimus, do you read me?"
"Affirmative old friend. What is it?"
"Agent Fowler has returned to the base. There are matters which he wishes to discuss with you." Ratchet explained. "Would you like me to send a ground bridge?"
Optimus frowned internally. He was still well over an hour away, and he'd prefer to save their energon for more important purposes, but whatever news their human ally was bringing could be urgent.
"Very well. Open a ground bridge at my current location."
The green and purple vortex appeared, brightening the empty two-lane road, as Optimus drove through. Just as suddenly it appeared, it swallowed in itself and plunged the late-night desert into darkness.
Entering the base, Optimus transformed and was greeted by their government ally, standing near the main computer next to Ratchet. He looked disheveled, and the bags underneath his eyes told the prime that it had been a long night for him, and likely many more would follow.
"Great, you're here now. I'm sure Ratchet told you I had some things to discuss. Where are the others?"
"He did. And the rest of the team is watching over their respective charges. Arcee elected to stay with June tonight." Optimus replied.
"I was hoping to tell everyone at once but I'm sure you'll get the message to them. I had to tell General Bryce about the children and June." Agent Fowler rubbed his hand against his face as he sighed, recomposing himself as he leaned against the railing. "It was not a pleasant conversation. With Jack captured, it means the children and June aren't safe unattended. General Bryce disagrees entirely on letting civilians continue to work with the Autobots but I managed to convince him to let y'all continue to watch over them, but it comes with some drawbacks. They want stricter oversight over all of your operations, and they want to be kept in the loop more about what you're dealing with." Fowler hesitated for a moment before he continued. "And they want to become directly involved in the war."
Optimus' face turned stern as he spoke. "I will not allow innocent human lives to become casualties of our war."
"That's not the way the general sees it Prime, he's been itching for a reason to get the Pentagon to take this war more seriously. American soldiers have already made the ultimate sacrifice defending bases that have come upon Decepticon attack, but a civilian being included in that now? The line's been crossed. This is the fate of our planet, and the US government isn't going to sit around any longer. Look, I know I haven't been the most easy person to work with, but I trusted you to keep us safe. This is just out of my hands now."
"Agent Fowler, your human militaries are no match for the Decepticons. I fear we would only be needlessly endangering more human lives sending them to battle on their own."
"Uncle Sam knows how to fight its battles, and we're not fighting them on our own. The Pentagon has begun the process of setting up a special task force to work directly with the Autobots. It'll take some time to be put together but in the meantime, General Bryce has agreed to authorize you more access to our satellites. Should help boost the range and power of your scanners. We're doing everything we can to help find Jack."
Optimus stood silently, thinking over the agent's words. "I do not agree with General Bryce, but if that is the wish of your government then so be it. It is your right to make your own decisions."
"Thank you. I'm sure the general will appreciate that. There's something else I need to tell you, part of the reason I came here actually. I would've waited to tell you about my conversation with General Bryce later when I had better news but this felt like it fit the criteria." Agent Fowler strode toward one of the human computers to pull up a video feed onto the main terminal. "These two cons were spotted raiding a Walmart in Texas just under an hour ago."
"This fits the criteria for better news?" Ratchet asked skeptically as he watched a pair of vehicons stumble their way through an empty supermarket.
"Normally, no. It's a massive pain to cover up something like this. But it's what they took that makes it noteworthy."
"And what would that be?"
"They took an assortment of produce, canned goods and ransacked the pharmacy. Took a bunch of first aid kits among other medical items." Fowler explained.
Ratchet was perplexed by the list as he continued to watch the rolling footage. "But why would the Decepticons steal that? It has no use to them. Not unless they-"
"Intended to keep Jack alive for an extended period." Said Optimus as he finished the sentence. "While slightly reassuring, this only worries me more about what Megatron intends to accomplish."
Agent Fowler nodded, agreeing with him. "You and me both Prime. I just hope that whatever it is, Jack is strong enough to get through until we can bring him back home."
With no other news for Prime, Agent Fowler left the base. Silence lingered between the two Autobots in the now-empty missile silo until Optimus broke the silence.
"Ratchet, what would it mean if I now had Jack's memories?"
Immediately halting his work, Ratchet turned to face the Prime. "Come again? I'm hoping Bulkhead was right and my audio receptors have lost their touch."
"Ever since I've been back, I've been able to recall moments of Jack's life from his point of view." Optimus restated.
Confused, Ratchet tried to dispute what he'd just been told. "But, that shouldn't be possible! Vector Sigma downloaded the knowledge of the Primes. The only ones who have ever had access to Vector Simga were the Primes."
"And those chosen by a Prime." Optimus reminded him.
"But it still shouldn't have downloaded his memories. He has no spark, nothing for the key to read off of." Ratchet explained.
"But what about Airachnid's venom? We know it was causing changes to his blood. Could it be responsible?"
Ratchet shook his head as he pulled up all of the notes he had been taking on Jack's health onto the main terminal. "Not possible. At least not on its own. I've been keeping track of his health, and nothing suggested a spark was growing. It must've been something he encountered on Cybertron then. Perhaps Vector Sigma itself somehow."
"This complicates the situation a whole lot further." Ratchet continued. "Jack has a growing spark inside of him. Who knows what that could do to him? That's not even mentioning the fact that he won't be receiving the energon doses I've been regularly providing. His health could take a turn for the worse without it."
"I cannot imagine what Jack may be going through. We must stop at nothing to return him." Optimus said solemnly.
Soundwave watched silently as another vehicon was ruthlessly hurled across the control bridge.
Megatron turned to question his Second-in-Command through grinding denta. "How could this have happened? How is Project Iacon completely unavailable!?"
An image of Optimus Prime appeared on the spy master's visor, along with the data entries associated with Project Iacon. Up until recently, a few of the files had been decoded, the information inside of them highly valuable. But now, every file, including the ones already decoded, was extremely corrupted. A simple virus had been created that destroyed and infected every file associated with Project Iacon. Unlike before, they couldn't simply reverse what Orion Pax did.
"Even now, Optimus finds a way to ruin my plans." Megatron growled out. "Is there a chance you could recover any information?"
Clipped audio recordings from different voices began playing to form the con's response. "Unsure. Everything has – turned to scrap! It's gonna be – nearly impossible to – piece together. Estimated time of completion is – unknown."
Megatron scowled in frustration. This would set the project back indefinitely. "Project Iacon is on hold for the foreseeable future then. Shockwave's new project will now be our priority. I'm confident it will be enough to turn this war in our favor. Has he returned from Cybertron with all of his necessary equipment?"
Soundwave responded with a simple nod.
"Excellent. Make sure he is well acquainted with his new lab and begins work immediately. And what of Knockout? Has he tended to the human?"
Another nod from the Decepticon answered his question.
Megatron grinned sadistically as he turned to leave the control bridge. "Good. Have Airachnid meet me in the medical bay. It's time she properly welcomes our new guest aboard."
Jack hissed as the bandage was wrapped around his abdomen, and was quick to criticize his caretaker. "Hey! Be careful with what you're doing! You can make things worse."
Knockout rolled his optics as he handed Breakdown the leftover bandage roll. "Quit your complaining or you can do it yourself. And my bad that I don't understand human anatomy. I'm doing this based on what you told me to do."
Jack grunted as he finished applying the bandages himself. "Where did you even get this stuff?"
"You don't need to worry about that fleshy." Answered Knockout as he faced his assistant. "Inform Soundwave that the Autobot's pet has been patched up."
As Breakdown approached a terminal to do that, Knockout stood at his own terminal with samples of Jack's blood; Acquiring samples of it while attempting to aid Jack. From the examination table, Jack could see that Knockout had begun analyzing his blood.
"Why did you collect samples of my blood?" Jack asked.
Knockout stopped to face him. "Doctors usually keep records of their patients. This blood, even if it is disgusting, is part of you. Hence it goes in my records of you."
"You're not my doctor." Jack huffed.
"You can tell that to Lord Megatron if you have problems with the care you've received." The medic retorted before going back to look at his screens.
Minutes passed as Jack sat waiting in the middle of the medical, trying his best to not dread his situation. He was in a room with two Decepticons, aboard a Decepticon warship, that was filled to the brim with Decepticons. Okay, the situation was pretty dreadful. But there wasn't a thing he could do about it. He was stuck here as their prisoner and his only hope off of this ship was the Autobots rescuing him. Jack knew the chances of that happening though, and they were slim.
"That's…. interesting." Knockout suddenly said aloud.
Before Jack could question him on what he meant, the door to the med bay suddenly opened. The leader of the Decepticons strolled through and wasted no time with pleasantries.
"Where is the Autobot base located?"
Jack scoffed as he painfully pushed himself up to stand. Still, the silver titan towered over him, but that was beside the point. "That's a hard question actually. I've got no clue where the super secret base housing aliens is located. They never bothered to tell me."
Megatron chuckled before continuing. "How about an easier question then. Where is Vector Sigma?"
Jack remained silent as he tried to not let the look of surprise show on his face. It, however, proved to be a futile attempt.
"Don't look so shocked boy. I saw you holding the Key to Vector Sigma, which I'm guessing is how Optimus restored his memories. You were carrying the key when you came through the space bridge, meaning you had traveled to Vector Sigma, and you know where it's located. But I'll ask you another question though. Why would Optimus trust one of our oldest and most valuable relics to a pathetic fleshling like you?" Megatron leaned in close, but Jack stood firm in his place, doing his best to keep his gaze away from the rows of sharp denta. "Was it an act meant to deceive me, did he see something in you, or did he simply not want to risk the lives of one of his Autobots?"
Remaining silent, Jack did not falter as Megatron's red optics pierced through him, waiting for an answer.
Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, the warlord tsked and stood back to his full height. "I will get the answers I want in due time." Megatron looked toward the two other cons in the room. "Go help Shockwave in his new laboratory and assist him with whatever he may need. You will be called back in here at a later time to keep our guest in an acceptable condition."
Jack didn't like the sound of that.
As Knockout and Breakdown stepped through the door, Megatron looked back down at Jack. "I will be making my leave as well. I do hope you enjoy your stay aboard."
Megatron stepped through the door, but it didn't immediately shut as it had done many times before. Jack stood, staring at the empty frame that displayed the hallway. It was pitch black outside the med bay, he couldn't see a thing in that hallway but it likely wasn't an issue for cybertronian optics.
He began to wonder if this was a mistake, leaving him alone in the room with an open door. This could be his chance, he could escape this room and maybe find a way to contact the Autobots. Get them his location and they could send a ground bridge. It was a small chance, but a chance nonetheless. The only issue was how high off the ground he was. The table wasn't terribly tall but Jack still looked around for anything that could get down safely. Finding nothing, Jack cautiously stepped toward the edge and contemplated risking the jump.
Before he could make his decision, however, the sound of scuttling metal legs made Jack's heart drop in his stomach.
Just like his dreams, violet optics stared at him from the darkness. His breathing became rapid and his body froze as the tormentor of his dreams crawled on the ceiling out of the shadows and into the light.
"Hello, Jack. We're going to have so much fun together."
Hey! Three months to the date since the last update, wow. How have y'all been? Sorry for the long hiatus, my new job took all of my free time the past few months.
Hope you enjoyed the chapter. It's a pretty important one since it sets up a lot of elements in the story I want to tell. Also, I'm sure this chapter answered your question Juxshoa! It's an element I've been planning since the idea for this story first popped into my head.
I'm hoping to get the next chapter out a lot sooner but I can't make any promises on that. I'm thinking of maybe doing shorter chapters so that I could put out updates quicker but I'm not sure. What do you think?
Either way, can't wait to get to the really fun stuff that's coming up soon. Thanks for reading. Leave a review for any questions or comments you have. I appreciate criticism and/or your thoughts on what I've done so far. Can't get better without feedback.
