Hank had to spend at least a day in the hospital for any injuries he sustained during Marco's torture. He hated it, he was fine, he didn't like staying cooped up in the hospital. He felt weak and powerless that wasn't him nor will it ever be him.
The team still kept Dani staying between them just in case Marco had any friends who'd come back. So far it has been all clear. Finally Hank could get released, Erin had been picking him up. Dani was at school. They were gonna surprise the young girl when she got home, he was putting his jacket on when he saw his surrogate daughter there.
"I'm finally being released," Hank said.
'That's great, Dani's at school. From what Adam said she's been asking when you'd be coming home" Erin says.
He sighed and sat on the bed. "How do I tell her the truth, Erin? She's my daughter and my granddaughter. She's too young to understand this"
"My advice, wait till she's at least a little older for her to understand. Right now just let her be a kid. Be the father she needs and she deserves because it's what she needs and it's what.." She slightly choked up. "It's what Justin and Serena would want"
Hearing his son's name made him choke up, when he saw the little girl he saw both her parents in her. She had Serena's looks, she had his son's smile. Slowly she had been showing the Voight stubbornness.
"Why didn't they tell me? I could have helped them"
"I wish I knew Hank. Don't concentrate on the past, it'll drive you crazy. For now, focus on the future with Dani and giving her a good life. Making sure she's safe and protected"
"I'll make sure she has that. What if she hates me from hiding the truth from her?"
"Don't think that way, that little girl will always love you no matter what"
"She's all I have left Erin"
"That's not true. You have me, the team, Al, Trudy, you're never alone and neither is Dani. You both still have a family"
A small smile appeared on his face, Erin had been right. His team was his family. Erin and Kim were his daughters, Jay, Adam, Kevin were his sons, Antonio and Alvin were his brothers, and Trudy was his sister. His family may have been gone, but he would always have one within his team.
"I wanna make a couple stops on the way home"
"Of course"
After Hank had been discharged he and Erin left, he decided to drive and he drove. First he stopped at a flower shop and got a few sets of flowers. Erin had a feeling she knew what he was doing. He started to drive a bit more. He ended up at the cemetery where his son was buried, it still hurt coming here.
It was as if opening an old wound, a lump formed in his throat and his eyes started stinging and burning with tears. Bending down he placed down some flowers, he then stood to his full frame. He stayed quiet for a few moments. Just like he did the first few times after he was buried. Finally he bent down again and placed his hand on the cool headstone, he looked at it as if he was looking at his son.
"I promise son, I won't let anything happen to Dani. I'll protect her and keep her safe. Rest easy son"
Standing to his full height again he brought his fingers to his lips and down to his son's head stone. A few silent tears fell from his eyes. He then went back to his car and started driving to another cemetery, with Alvin's help he found out where Serena is buried. He walked around and found a head stone with just her name.
Serena Taylor
He knew his former informant never had any family that was local, she didn't have anyone besides Dani. Hank tried to become her family, he tried to be there for her. She wanted to do better for the sake of her daughter and now because of Marco, she would never have that chance.
Like before he bent down and placed the flowers in front of the headstone. "Marco's gone, Dani's safe. She's free of him. She's with me, I promise I'll never let anything happen to her under my watch. Dani will have a good life, she'll have a family. She'll have everything you wanted to give her. Rest easy"
Soon he headed back to his car and felt a weight off him, something had been weighing on him for sometime and he never knew. After visiting the two graves and saying his peace, he felt that weight was now gone. Erin saw him getting in and buckling up.
"Do you feel better?" Erin asked.
"A lot better" Hank says with a nod.
"Ready to go see the munchkin? She's out early today"
"I'd love to"
Erin smiled and pulled her phone out texting the others to let them know they're on their way home. The others had been at Hank's house setting up, they knew their boss wasn't a fan of parties he tolerated some depending on the occasion.
They were just going to set out some food platters and have cake. It had been a difficult task with a hyperactive and energetic six-year-old running around. Adam had been keeping her occupied outside while the others set up in the house, Kevin had gone to check on his friend. The young officer had been chasing the little girl around the yard but was careful.
Adam was running out of breath as he stopped, Kevin had been chuckling on the patio. "Really Ruz? You let a six-year-old out run you. Bro, you don't let criminals get away but you let her out run you"
"She's smaller, faster, and is very energetic," Adam says, trying to catch his breath.
Kevin chuckled again. "If you say so"
"Check me out!" Dani called.
She had climbed the jungle gym and was standing on top of the highest pole gripping the pole in her small fist. The two young officers quickly went over to her and hoped to get her down before she got hurt, Adam got in the back in case she fell backwards, Kevin got in the front.
"Alright little mama, jump down to me. Don't worry, I'll catch you" Kevin told her.
"You promise?"
"I promise"
Letting go of the pole she leaped down and moving fast on his feet the young officer had caught her, he and Adam both breathed out in relief. Dani brought her head up.
"I wanna do that again!"
"I don't think so sweetheart, we don't want you actually getting hurt next time" Adam said, coming around.
"I hope there is no next time" Came a gruff voice that belonged to none other than Hank.
That had caused the two officers to freeze hearing their boss, slowly they turned to see an amused look on his face. Dani had broken into a big smile.
"Daddy!"
Kevin set her down and ran to her father, smiling as the older father bent down and picked up his daughter.
"There's my little pea," Hank smiled, smoothing her hair back.
"I climbed high on the jungle gym daddy" She said proudly.
"I saw, let's try and not do that anymore. I don't want you getting hurt"
"I promise no more"
"That's my girl"
Jay chuckled seeing his two friends frozen. "You two should see your faces. Priceless"
"Y'all knew he was here?" Adam asked.
"Yeah, he and Erin came in a few minutes ago," Antonio replied.
"And none of you could give us a warning?" Kevin spoke this time.
"Not really," Erin chuckled.
"Time to eat you two," Alvin told them.
Everyone gathered in the house and grabbed plates getting their food, Hank went first getting Dani's than his. Once everyone had their food they all sat down and started to talk. Once everyone had eaten they had pulled out a small cake.
"Not a lot of sugar for this one, I'd like her to sleep tonight" Hank said, patting his daughter's head.
"It's whipped icing and sugar free, she'll never know the difference" Erin says.
After serving the cake around and everyone started eating, after eating what she could Dani had fallen asleep on her father's chest. Leftover cake all over her face and mouth, everyone smiled and snapped a picture of it.
"I think it's time I get this one cleaned up and put to bed," Hank smiled.
While Hank had taken his daughter upstairs the others cleaned and put the food away, they wanted Hank to have some quality time with his daughter. After the trash was taken out and changed, the food had been put away and they showed themselves out.
Hank managed to clean the food, cake and icing off his daughter's mouth, he quickly changed her into some pajamas. The six-year-old blindly opened her eyes.
"Daddy," She mumbled.
"Shh it's alright sweetheart, go back to sleep" He said softly.
"Can you read me a bedtime story?"
"I always have time for that"
She ran to her room and looked at her bookshelf. She grabbed a book, Hank followed her back with a smile. He propped himself on the small bed as his little girl propped herself up cuddling to his chest. When he saw the book he smiled more, his heart swelled. The book was Goodnight Moon, it was his son's favorite when he was her age.
"Are you alright daddy?"
"I'm just fine honey, my son loved this book when he was your age"
"Really?"
Hank nodded. "Mhmm. I read it to him every night"
"Do you think he would have liked me?"
"I'm sure he would have loved you sweetheart"
He opened the book. "In the great green room
There was a telephone
And a red balloon
And a picture of
The cow jumping over the moon
And there were three little bears sitting on chairs
And two little kittens
And a pair of mittens
And a little toy house
And a young mouse
And a comb and a brush and a bowl full of mush
And a quiet old lady who was whispering "hush"
Goodnight room
Goodnight moon
Goodnight cow jumping over the moon
Goodnight light
And the red balloon
Goodnight bears
Goodnight chairs
Goodnight kittens
And goodnight mittens
Goodnight clocks
And goodnight socks
Goodnight little house
And goodnight mouse
Goodnight comb
And goodnight brush
Goodnight nobody
Goodnight mush
And goodnight to the old lady whispering "hush"
Goodnight stars
Goodnight air
Goodnight noises everywhere"
Hank looked down to see his little girl fast asleep curled on his chest and softly kissed her head. "And good night to you my little star"
When he tried to move and lay her down, Dani held onto him tightly. Hank took that as he was staying. He cut her lamp off and laid awake just holding her. He vowed to make sure nothing happens to her, he promised his son and Serena. Now he was going to make that same promise to himself. He already freed her from Marco. If he could free her from him, he could do it again.
