Chapter 5: The Future's Been Foretold
(Sonic POV – Third Person)
Dusk had settled over the mansion, and Chris was still nowhere to be found. The Thorndyke
estate had become a gathering place for anxious minds, all of whom were desperately
searching for a rational explanation for the boy's prolonged absence.
"Chris still hasn't returned. Do you think something happened to him?" Cream asked, her voice
laced with concern, while Cheese added his worried "Chow."
"I'm sure he's fine," Amy reassured them, attempting to offer comfort. "He probably just lost
track of time. He'll be back any moment now."
"Are you sure?" Cream's voice trembled slightly.
"Yep, just wait. He'll be here any minute." As if on cue, the loud chime of the doorbell echoed
through the house. "See? What did I tell you?" Amy walked to the door and opened it, only to
find Sonic standing there, his expression skeptical.
"Has Chris returned?" he asked.
The group exchanged solemn glances and shook their heads.
"You didn't find him?" Amy asked, her voice tinged with both confusion and concern.
Sonic's face fell. "No, no sign of him." He looked disappointed.
A collective sigh filled the room.
"I hope he's alright. Chris has never been out this late without telling anyone," Ella stated,
placing a hand gently on her cheek. This gesture had become habitual for her over the years,
particularly in moments of deep concern like this one.
"Where could he have gone? It's not as if he could just disappear!" Amy remarked, her
frustration mounting.
"Well, there is a possibility that he... no, it couldn't be," Chuck muttered, his voice trailing off as
his expression grew increasingly contemplative. "He hasn't done anything like this in years..."
The room grew silent. Sonic and Tails exchanged inquisitive looks, while Mr. Tanaka and Ella
appeared troubled, their faces betraying deeper emotions. Amy, noticing Cream and Cheese's
confusion, gently ushered them toward the staircase, attempting to distract them and guide
them to bed.
"What is it, Chuck?" Tails asked, his voice rising slightly in curiosity.
Chuck exhaled heavily, his brow furrowing. "This whole situation with Chris... it reminds me of
things he used to do when he was younger—staying out late without telling anyone, sometimes
for days. It would drive us crazy, but he always turned up in the end." This statement clearly
piqued the interest of everyone present.
"Really?!" Cream asked, wide-eyed.
Chuck nodded slowly. "The reasons varied, but most of the time, it was intentional. He had a
way of vanishing, and no matter how hard we looked, we never found him. He was... too
experienced with it."
The room fell quiet as the weight of Chuck's words settled in. A sense of disbelief spread across
the group. Could they really give up searching for Chris?
Tails was the first to speak up, his voice filled with determination. "He's gotta be around here
somewhere. We just haven't been looking in the right places."
"Exactly," Sonic chimed in. "I'll search the entire planet if I have to, but I'm not stopping until I
find him. Chris is out there, and I'm not giving up on him."
The others nodded in agreement.
"We're not going to abandon Chris," Amy declared firmly, gripping her oversized mallet with
determination. "If anyone tries to harm him, they'll have to answer to me."
"Chow!" Cheese added, echoing Amy's resolve.
For a moment, Chuck appeared taken aback. He sighed, a reluctant smile playing at the corners
of his mouth. "Well, if you insist, go ahead. But be sure to come back by morning."
"Don't worry," Sonic said with a grin, already racing toward the door. "I'll be back in a flash."
"Sonic, wait!" Tails called after him, his voice tinged with worry. "We don't even know where he
could be!"
Sonic skidded to a halt and turned back to the group, scratching his head sheepishly. "So... has
anyone actually seen him before he left?"
All eyes turned to Chuck.
He sighed and shook his head. "Sorry, I can't be of much help. No matter how hard I tried, I
never could figure out where he'd go when he disappeared."
"I only saw him when he came down for lunch," Tails volunteered.
"Same here," Amy added.
Cream and Cheese nodded in unison.
"Hmm," Chuck mused, his face suddenly thoughtful. "Now that you mention it, Knuckles did stop
by after lunch. He was looking for Chris, said he needed to ask him something."
"Really? What was it about?" Sonic asked, his curiosity piqued.
Chuck shrugged. "I'm not sure. He told me it was none of my business, but whatever it was, he
seemed... agitated."
"Alright then, let's go ask Knuckles. He might know where Chris went," Sonic suggested, leading
the charge toward the X-Tornado.
The others quickly followed, but Sonic was already a blur, speeding ahead toward Angel Island.
Just hang on, Chris. I'm coming for you.
(Sonic POV)
Where could Chris have gone? The question haunted me as I dashed through the streets, the
city passing by in a blur of colors. I closed in on Angel Island, its towering silhouette rising in the
distance, barely a mile away. Pushing myself harder, I felt like I was running on air—though, I
probably was.
It didn't take long before I found myself standing at the base of a weathered stone temple, its
steps worn with age and covered in vines. The ancient hieroglyphics etched into the walls
seemed to whisper secrets of an era long past. At the summit of the temple, the Master Emerald
lay in repose, its aura pulsating with quiet power.
I moved carefully up the steps, mindful of the ancient guardian who rested nearby. Knuckles, the
ever-vigilant protector of the Master Emerald, seemed lost in thought. His eyes were wide open,
but there was a distant look in them, as though he were lost in a reverie.
"Hey, Knuckles!" I called, my voice breaking the stillness.
He reacted instinctively, his fist flying toward my face. I dodged just in time, nearly losing my
balance on the steps. Knuckles quickly regained his footing, his muscles tensing as he prepared
to strike.
"Who's there?" he demanded, his voice rough with the instinctual readiness of a fighter.
I sat cross-legged, folding my arms across my chest. "Hi, Knuckles. Good to see you too."
"Sonic?" Knuckles blinked, momentarily thrown off.
"Yep, the one and only," I said, standing up and offering him a thumbs-up, trying to lighten the
mood.
"What are you doing here?" he asked, his tone now more serious.
"What, a guy can't drop by to say hi every now and then?" I replied, trying to defuse the tension.
"Not if that guy's you. Especially considering the last person who came by to say 'hi' was—"
He was cut off by the sudden sound of the X-Tornado landing. Turning, I saw Tails, Amy, Cream,
and Cheese all emerging, running toward us.
"Amy? Tails? Cream?" I called out.
"Hiya, Knuckles!" Cream waved, but Knuckles just gave me a questioning look. I shrugged it off.
Sighing, Knuckles turned back to me. "As I was saying, what exactly brings you here?" he asked
again.
I took a deep breath, trying to keep my tone casual despite the weight of the situation. "Well,
Chris hasn't come home yet. Normally, we wouldn't bother you, but you were the last one to see
him. We thought we'd ask if you knew where he might've gone."
"So you've lost track of Chris?" Knuckles asked, his voice steady but skeptical.
"Not exactly—"
"Then why are you asking me if I know where he is?"
"I just thought you might have seen something, anything," I said, my words trailing off with a hint
of desperation.
Knuckles paused, then shook his head slowly. "Sorry, but I can't help. I have more important
matters to attend to right now."
"What, guarding your precious rock?" I quipped.
His eyes flashed with indignation. "What did you just call the Master Emerald?"
Before I could respond, Amy interjected, her voice calm but insistent. "Are you sure you haven't
seen Chris? He's been missing all day, and we're worried."
Knuckles met her gaze and nodded solemnly. "I haven't seen him since lunch. But now that you
mention it, he was acting a little... strange."
"Strange? How so?" Tails asked, his voice edged with concern.
"He was just staring at the wall, like he didn't even notice I was there," Knuckles said, rubbing
his chin in thought. "When I tried to talk to him, it was like he was in a trance. I don't know... it
was unsettling."
That caught my attention. A trance? Why hadn't he told me this earlier?
Before I could probe further, the ground trembled beneath my feet.
"What's going on?" I shouted, instinctively looking toward the city. A thick plume of smoke rose
from the center, and the shrill sound of sirens filled the air.
"Not again," I muttered under my breath, already sprinting toward the source of the chaos.
