"That took quite a while!" Kelly looked up as we sat down at the table she and Lucy were occupying with empty ice-cream bowls. Lucy was dozing off in her mother's arms as Kelly continued, "I was about to come and look for you."
"You won't believe it, mom," I practically fell into the chair next to her, "We went through thirty-one wands before Ollivander found one that chose me!"
"I-excuse me, what!?" Kelly's eyes bugged wide, "Thirty-one? The most I've ever heard of is nine!"
"I was about ready to go in and get her myself," Mark stretched his legs as he sprawled out on his chair.
"Yeah, it was crazy!" I laughed nervously, "I was worried I wouldn't get one."
"Well, no matter," Kelly smiled at my laugh, "Can I see it?"
"Sure!" I pulled the wand out of my bag, gently handing it to her, "It's maple, with a dragon heartstring core and ten and a half inches!"
"A fine looking wand," Kelly smiled as she handed it back to me, "I'm especially fond of the color. It reminds me of that dress you were staring at earlier as we passed Madame Malkin's. The silver goes well with your hair."
"I know, right?" Kelly and I started to engage in a fashion talk. Meanwhile, Mark just sighed as he shook his head.
"Some days, I wish we had a son I could talk to…" He smiled longingly, before a sudden gust of wind caused him to flinch.
Kelly stopped talking immediately, which caused me to stop as well.
"Mom? Is something wrong," I looked at her with concern. Another strong gust of wind suddenly blew by.
"This wind…" She trailed off as her head turned to the skies. Another gust blew by. Kelly rose, concern etched in her features, "Mark…"
"Yeah…?" He stood up, focusing on his wife, "What's wrong?"
"Dear God…it can't be..." Kelly trailed off.
An abrupt roar made the entire street cover their ears in shock.
I tensed as the hairs on the back of my neck stood on end! My hands flew up to my ears as the sound permeated every sense of my being!
The wind picked up in full force, and a sudden rumble shook the dust from every shop and building in sight.
I looked up, my mouth hanging open as I bore witness to a dragon landing on the roof of Gringotts! It had horns that curved in front of it, was predominantly black in color, and was absolutely massive.
My ears were ringing as my hands fell to my sides. The dragon roared again, seemingly declaring war on the people who were now fleeing in a mass panic. Several individuals apparated away, but those with children and their families (and couldn't perform Side-Along Apparition) fled from the raging reptile.
Kelly had passed a now crying Lucy to Mark, who protectively held his arms around her, turning her away from the beast.
Kelly ran to me, shouting something, but I couldn't hear her; my ears were still ringing, and I hadn't looked away from the dragon.
I was…in awe…
This is the first magical creature I've ever seen…despite the impending danger, I found myself drawn to it, in a weird way. My mind was blank; I didn't even notice I'd risen to my feet, while slowly approaching the creature.
Was it my bloodline? The fact that my ancestor is technically a dragon? Was it my wonder at the mystical world and arts? I'll never know.
As I approached, the creature's eyes seemed to focus on me, though the snarl never left its snout.
Kelly was screaming my name at this point, but I still couldn't hear her clearly, as my focus was elsewhere.
"Aan dov…nii aan dovah…," The words I spoke under my breath were foreign to me, but I knew exactly what they meant. A dragon…it's a dragon…
Its eyes widened slightly at my words. I held the gaze of those deep orange eyes for a second more before I saw what looked like a pale white film briefly flow through them, before it disappeared. What was…?
I was thrown from my stupor as spells started being thrown at the creature. Ministry wizards started apparating onto the scene, each one throwing various stunning spells at the creature.
The dragon broke its gaze on me and roared fiercely as it reared its head, its maw glowing as flames danced along its tongue. It unleashed a volley of flames down the whole street!
"Protego!" I heard Kelly shout as a barrier wrapped around Mark and Lucy.
My eyes widened as the flames overwhelmed various wizards who cast protective barriers around themselves. Some didn't make it and were consumed in the flames.
There was a young child nearby, who'd been separated from his family. He was knocked out on the ground, having been smacked in the head when the panicking crowd ran. He was about to be consumed in the flames!
"No!" I shouted as I leapt forward.
"Kayla!" I heard Kelly scream in horror; she must have come running to me to cast a shield for us.
Unfortunately, the flames enveloped me as I dove after the child, and I heard sorrow in Kelly's voice as she cast another shield charm to protect herself.
I felt the flames envelope my back as I used my body to shield the child. My wings ripped through my shirt as they whipped around us to provide further protection from the heat. White wisps of energy I didn't understand emanated from them as I was bathed in dragonfire.
The flames vanished as the dragon once again took to the sky, flying low over London as it set fire to various buildings as wizards continued to pelt it with spells.
Kelly watched in horror as she witnessed Kayla engulfed in flames.
She hadn't been able to make it in time to shield her eldest daughter. She had to make a split second decision, and her years of training in the Ministry and as a dragon-researcher taught her to shield herself first; you couldn't save anyone if you were killed. And she already took up time to shield Mark and Lucy.
Tears stung at her eyes as the flames blocked her view of the white haired girl. But the second they vanished as the dragon launched back into the sky, she made a bee-line straight for where Kayla had been.
She stopped short, however, as her breath caught in her throat. Wrapped around both herself and the unconscious boy were pure, ivory-silver wings. The strange feathers held an aura of heat as smoke rose from them. They twitched slightly as they drew back, revealing them to be attached to Kayla's back.
Kayla rose with the child in her arms as the wings disappeared in a wisp of black light. Kelly abandoned all confusion in favor of rushing her daughter, grasping her in a firm hug, ignoring the painful heat coming from her backside.
"Are you hurt?" Kelly pulled back slightly to inspect the young girl for damages. Aside from her clothes being burnt and torn nearly to shreds, she seemed okay…
"I…I'm fine," Kayla confirmed, nodding her head.
With the immediate threat gone, and with her daughter confirmed safe, Kelly took in the aftermath of the damage.
The street was sizzling, with some of the rock in the brick street molten and scorching. A witch who seemed to be the passed out boy's mother raced over, retrieving the child as she wrapped her cloak around him and ran to her family.
The Ministry wizards were gone, having ran in pursuit of the dragon. With this basically being her field of expertise, Kelly knew she needed to join them.
"Are you two alright?" Mark came rushing over, kneeling slightly with a tearful Lucy still in his arms.
"We're fine," Kelly nodded, "Mark, take shelter in the Leaky Cauldron. Book a room, if you have to. With all the wizards there, it'll be the safest option in London right now. I have to go after the dragon with the rest of the Ministry."
"Understood," Mark nodded firmly, his eyes hard as he also stated, "Be careful."
"Always," Kelly and Mark pecked each other on the lips just before she apparated away.
Kayla looked around the desolate street as Mark led them to the Leaky Cauldron, wondering and wondering.
Kelly came back almost eight hours later.
Her robes were singed and she looked absolutely exhausted. Lucy had fallen asleep hours ago, and with it being so late, Mark and Kelly decided to spend the rest of the night in the Leaky Cauldron.
We only had one room, and I shared a bed with Lucy, who was sleeping peacefully by my side. The three year old turned over in her sleep, gripping my arm as Kelly and Mark climbed into the bed on the opposite side of the room.
"So what happened?" Mark asked as the two settled into the covers.
"We're still not sure," Kelly answered, and I shifted slightly so I could hear them better, "That dragon was a Hebridean Black. There should be no reason for it to be so far south. They're native to the isles far north of Scotland."
"While that is strange, it's not quite what I meant…" Mark chuckled at his wife's continued fascinations, "What's the damage? Was the creature caught?"
"No, unfortunately," Kelly shook her head, "Nearly half the city burned down. That dragon was massive, by far the most powerful I've ever seen. We managed to drive it off, but even then, the only real reason London isn't ashes by now is because it flew off. We barely even caught its attention. I've never seen anything like it."
"So this isn't normal?" Mark asked.
"No, dragons usually stay away from heavily populated areas, and its rare for them to grow that huge these days," Kelly answered, "But this one…it must be ancient! Dragons only grow more powerful the longer they age…for it to be able to ignore so many wizards and cause such mayhem-"
Lucy suddenly made a noise, then shifted more in her sleep.
"Maybe tone it down a bit, honey," Mark smiled softly.
"Sorry," Kelly grimaced, before glancing our way. I kept my eyes closed and evened out my breathing.
"I thought you said the Ministry was able to handle dragons pretty well?" Mark inquired after a moment.
"Well, I say that, but they're still the most difficult magical creature to keep in check," Kelly smiled sheepishly, "And as I said, this particular dragon was something else. It's going to take days if not weeks to wipe the Muggles' memories…"
"How've the girls been?" Kelly shifted topics as she settled into her husband's side, "Are they okay?"
"For the most part," Mark nodded as he wrapped his arms around his wife, "I got Lucy some fruit to help calm her down, and not even an hour later she was back to her talkative, giggling self. Kayla, however…"
I heard them shift around their bed more; I presume that they're looking at me.
"She's been quiet all evening," Mark continued, "She ate, and said she's doing okay. She's not covered in burns, and we were able to replace her clothes fairly quickly. She also drank a lot of water. But I don't know…she's been off."
"Understandable," Kelly said, "She could've died. And seeing a dragon up close for the first time…it leaves quite the impression."
"I suppose so…" Mark acknowledged before saying, "We're lucky you've got so much experience with dragons. If it weren't for your shield charms…"
"But that's the thing," Kelly shuddered, "I didn't make it to her in time…"
"What?"
"I wasn't able to cast a shield for her," Kelly's voice nearly cracked, and my heart broke for her, "I don't know how she wasn't burned. Maybe a nearby wizard shielded her, or it has something to do with her strange fire magic…but…do you remember when we first found her at our doorstep?"
"Yeah," Mark answered, "What about it?"
"She had those weird wings," Kelly said, "She had them again, when the fire got to her. They were large, and I found them wrapped around her and the boy she shielded."
"You mean the accidental magic your dad was talking about?" He clarified.
"Yeah…though it may not be accidental," She yawned, "It's nothing short of a miracle…"
"Let's get some rest now," Mark smiled, wise to the way his wife's eyes began drooping, "You've had a long day."
"All…right," Kelly dozed off, falling asleep surprisingly quickly. She must be tired.
Mark reached over and shut the lamp off, engulfing the room in darkness.
I opened my eyes, able to see clearly despite the dark. Darkvision is a handy trait to have.
I sat up slowly, hugging my knees as I organized my own thoughts about today.
A dragon attack…nothing like this happened in Canon…right? The only scenario I can remotely think of that's similar was when Harry, Ron, and Hermione escaped Gringotts in book seven.
But Harry is young right now! He's definitely my age, if not younger. With how small and skinny he is, it wouldn't surprise me if he's even younger, but he's also probably never really eaten enough. Since he was in the cupboard under the stairs, I know for a fact that he doesn't, or at least didn't, know about the magical world yet.
So what happened today? Or more accurately, why did it happen?
I didn't make any changes to the world with Katie in the Record Room. Did my presence in the world cause some kind of butterfly effect? Or maybe it has nothing to do with me? And that dragon…was it being controlled somehow, or was it simply a rogue that slipped through the cracks?
No…that's way too coincidental. Dragon DNA runs in my veins, I can speak to them, and I'm able to wield some kind of draconic magic. Did my presence draw the dragon in somehow?
No, that can't be it. If that were the case, then dragons would've flocked over to me my whole life. I've been living in this world for over a decade now and never seen them before. Maybe there really is some kind of butterfly effect going on right now…
Hm…
Either way, I can't ignore this event. I'm sure the Daily Prophet will eat this story up, and whether or not what they put out is the truth or mere propaganda, I'll do some research with their findings and my own.
A/N: Shorter chapter, but that's cause the stuff in the next chapter made putting it all together too long. The next one should be up shortly, but I still need to edit everything. Thank you for your patience.
