CHAPTER 03
They walked side by side through the bustling streets of Konoha, weaving past festival remnants and merchants calling out their wares. Ino led the way, her steps graceful yet deliberate, keeping the pace casual and unhurried. She glanced at Neji out of the corner of her eye, the faintest hint of a smirk on her lips.
It hadn't escaped her notice that he wasn't protesting their aimless wandering anymore. So he's indulging me now, huh? she thought, feeling a surge of satisfaction. Good. Let's see how far I can push this.
Her smile softened, growing more enticing with each passing second. She made sure her gaze remained warm and inviting whenever their eyes met, her voice light and teasing whenever she spoke. She knew the effect she had on people—how they faltered under her charm, how they couldn't resist the way she smiled or the way her laughter rang like a melody.
But as they walked, her confidence wavered just a fraction. Neji remained maddeningly composed, his expression unreadable, his attention seemingly elsewhere despite her best efforts.
Ino felt a flicker of irritation bubbling beneath her polished exterior. What is with this Hyuuga? she fumed silently. Sasuke was bad enough—practically a brick wall except when it comes to Hinata—but this guy… this guy ignored me when we were genin. Me! The Ino Yamanaka!
Her mind flashed back to that time during the Chunin Exams when she'd tried to use her feminine wiles to distract Neji during a heated battle over a scroll. He hadn't even flinched. She remembered the frustration, the disbelief. No one had resisted her charm before—not even Shikamaru, lazy as he was. Yet Neji had dismissed her like she was nothing more than a slight breeze.
Not this time, she vowed, her irritation fueling her determination. This Neji Hyuuga is going to fall, and when he does, he'll be on his knees, begging for my attention. The sooner, the better.
"Yamanaka," Neji said suddenly, his voice breaking through her thoughts.
She turned to him, her face carefully composed, her smile as radiant as ever. "Yes, Neji?"
He glanced around, his pale eyes scanning the streets. "Where exactly are we going? Or are you still avoiding giving me a direct answer?"
"Oh, Neji," she said with a laugh, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. "Why do you always need to have a plan? Sometimes, it's nice to just… wander. Don't you think?"
His gaze shifted to her, his expression calm but skeptical. "Wandering aimlessly isn't particularly productive."
"Not everything has to be productive," she countered, her voice taking on a playful lilt. "Sometimes, it's about enjoying the moment. You should try it sometime."
He didn't respond immediately, and Ino couldn't help but feel a spark of triumph. She saw the faintest flicker of something in his eyes—a crack in his perfect composure.
"Is that what you're doing?" he asked finally. "Enjoying the moment?"
She tilted her head, her smirk deepening. "Maybe. Or maybe I'm just trying to figure out what makes the oh-so-mysterious Neji Hyuuga tick."
Neji gave her a flat look, but the corner of his mouth twitched, almost imperceptibly. "Good luck with that."
Ino's grin widened. Oh, I don't need luck, she thought. You're already starting to crumble, Hyuuga. You just don't know it yet.
As they continued walking, her mind raced. She needed to push harder, to break through that stoic exterior. And she would—because no one, not even Neji Hyuuga, was immune to Ino Yamanaka's charm.
As they strolled through the streets, Ino caught a glimpse of something lavender out of the corner of her eye. Her heart skipped a beat. No way. She turned her head slightly, her sharp eyes locking on the unmistakable figure of Hinata Hyuga.
But Hinata wasn't alone.
Walking beside her, his dark hair catching the sunlight, was Sasuke Uchiha.
Ino's jaw almost dropped. Is she insane? Walking in broad daylight with him when her impossible cousin is practically tearing the village apart looking for her?
They were on the far side of the street, their pace unhurried. Hinata's shy smile radiated happiness, and although Sasuke's expression was as stoic as ever, there was the faintest curve to his lips—something akin to a small smile. They looked… sweet together.
Too sweet.
Oh, no. No, no, no, Ino panicked. If Neji sees this, all hell is going to break loose.
She sneaked a glance at Neji and froze. He was already beginning to turn in their direction, his sharp eyes scanning the area.
This is bad. This is really, really bad.
Ino's heart raced, and before she could think twice, her instincts took over. She grabbed Neji's face, her hands cupping his cheeks, and in one swift motion, leaned up and kissed him.
Her lips pressed against his in a soft but decisive kiss, her entire body bracing for his reaction. Time seemed to freeze around them, the noise of the village fading into nothing.
There goes my first kiss, she thought, her mind a whirlwind of emotions.
Neji stiffened immediately, his entire body going rigid. His hands twitched at his sides, and for a moment, she thought he might push her away. But he didn't.
Instead, he stood there, utterly still, as if his brain was struggling to process what had just happened.
Ino pulled back slightly, her face still close to his, her hands trembling against his skin. "D-Don't move," she whispered urgently, her voice barely audible.
Neji's pale eyes, wide and filled with shock, met hers. "What… are you doing?" he asked, his voice low and strained.
"Just trust me!" she hissed, glancing quickly out of the corner of her eye to see if Hinata and Sasuke had passed.
Luckily, they had disappeared around the corner, oblivious to the chaos they had just caused.
Ino exhaled a shaky breath, releasing his face and stepping back. Her cheeks were flushed, her pulse racing like never before. "Okay. Crisis averted," she muttered to herself.
Neji blinked, his composure slowly returning. "Crisis?" he repeated, his tone dangerously calm.
Ino realized her mistake immediately. She waved her hands in front of her, forcing a laugh. "Oh, nothing! Just… uh… don't worry about it!"
His eyes narrowed, his shock giving way to suspicion. "Yamanaka," he said slowly, his voice like ice, "you have precisely five seconds to explain yourself."
Ino gulped, her mind scrambling for an excuse. Oh, crap. What have I done?
