CHAPTER 06
Neji exhaled loudly, the sound cutting through the tense silence like a blade. It felt like an eternity had passed as they combed through the apartment, the search yielding nothing but mounting frustration. His patience, always thin to begin with, had clearly reached its limit.
Ino looked up from where she was rifling through a drawer, her playful smirk faltering as she met his gaze. "Enough of this, Yamanaka," he said, his voice low but firm, as he stepped closer to her.
Her confidence wavered, and she instinctively took a step back. The heat of his gaze pinned her in place, and her heart raced as she retreated further until her back hit the wall.
Her breath caught in her throat as Neji stepped closer, his presence overwhelming. The air between them seemed to thicken, charged with an intensity that made her heart race. She had thought she was in control, using her charm to manipulate the situation, but Neji's sudden shift made her feel like she was the one being cornered.
His eyes were unreadable, but the tension in his posture told her he was far from unaware. She had been pushing the boundaries, showing off just a little too much, and it seemed she had caught his attention more than she expected.
"You're doing this on purpose, aren't you?" Neji's voice was low, cutting through the stillness of the room.
Ino tensed. Had he figured it out? Had he seen through her act? The sudden doubt made her pulse quicken. She fought to keep her composure, but it was becoming harder. She was usually the one in control, the one who could charm anyone, but now, faced with Neji's quiet scrutiny, she felt a bit of unease creeping in.
Before she could say anything, Neji stepped even closer. Ino's breath hitched in her chest, the space between them closing to an almost unbearable proximity. He was standing so close now that she could feel his breath against her skin. No… this isn't how I planned it.
"You took me here in your apartment," Neji said, his voice calm but laced with something she couldn't quite place. "And deliberately flaunted yourself while pretending to search for something we both know doesn't exist."
His words hit her like a wave, and Ino froze. She had been so focused on distracting him, so sure of herself, that she hadn't considered that he might be onto her—onto her intentions.
Her heart pounded as she tried to regain control of the situation, but Neji wasn't making it easy. His next words were even more intimate, as he leaned in closer, his lips just inches from her ear.
"Do you have any idea what it means to invite a man to your house?" His voice was barely above a whisper, sending a shiver down her spine. "Or do you know exactly what it means, and that's why you invited me here?"
Ino's breath caught as he whispered those words into her ear. She tried to steady herself, but before she could react, she felt the sharp tug of his teeth on her earlobe. The sensation was electrifying, sending a jolt through her entire body.
What is going on? Ino thought, her cheeks flushed crimson as she tried to make sense of everything. She had been in control of countless situations like this before, but now it felt like the tables were turning—and she wasn't sure how to respond.
Her mind was a whirlwind. Neji had never shown any interest in her before. He had been cold, distant—even when she had tried to seduce him as a genin, he had brushed her off. But now, his actions spoke volumes, and Ino couldn't help but feel the weight of his closeness, his heat, pressing against her.
She swallowed, trying to speak, but the words caught in her throat. She wasn't sure how much longer she could keep this facade up. And worse, she wasn't sure if she wanted to anymore. Neji was making her feel things she hadn't expected—things she didn't know how to handle.
She opened her mouth, finally breaking the silence. "I… I didn't mean—"
But before she could finish, Neji's eyes locked onto hers, his gaze intense and unwavering. It felt as though he could see straight through her, exposing every hidden thought, every secret she had tried to bury beneath her confident exterior.
His lips were so close now, she could feel the warmth of his breath against her skin. It was as if he were daring her to finish her sentence, daring her to acknowledge what was happening between them.
Ino laughed nervously, her voice a touch too high, betraying her discomfort. She pressed her hands against Neji's chest in a futile attempt to push him away, but it was like trying to move a mountain.
Curse him, she thought, frustration bubbling inside her. He's like a brick wall!
Yet, despite herself, her palms lingered against the warmth of his skin through the fabric of his shirt, sending a flicker of heat through her that she quickly shoved aside.
Neji remained unmoved, his stance as solid as a fortress.
"I-I don't know what you're talking about," she stammered, avoiding his piercing gaze. Her mind raced, desperately trying to find an escape from the intense moment.
Neji remained silent, his calm composure unnerving. His eyes traveled deliberately to her lips, lingering there as if they held some unspoken answer. Ino felt her breath hitch again, her heart pounding so loudly she was sure he could hear it.
"Stop pretending. You know exactly what this is about," he said quietly, his voice low and steady, the weight of his words settling heavily between them.
Before she could process his words, before she could react, Neji closed the distance between them. His hand cupped the back of her neck, his touch firm yet strangely gentle, and then his lips were on hers.
It wasn't a tentative kiss, nor was it uncertain. It was deliberate, consuming, like he had been holding back a flood and now there was no stopping it. He kissed her as if he had wanted to do so for ages, his restraint finally giving way to something raw and undeniable.
Ino's eyes widened in shock, her body frozen for a moment. Her mind screamed at her to do something, anything, but all she could do was stand there, her thoughts spiraling into chaos.
What is happening? Why is he doing this? And why aren't I stopping him? her mind raced, the questions colliding into each other with no answers in sight. This isn't part of the plan! I was supposed to distract him, not… this.
Yet, even as her thoughts protested, a small, traitorous part of her whispered that maybe she didn't want to stop him.
She closed her eyes, her thoughts a whirlwind of confusion, frustration, and something dangerously close to longing.
And then, slowly, she began to respond. At first, her movements were hesitant, unsure, but as the heat between them grew, her confidence returned. Her arms slid around his neck, pulling him closer, and she pressed into him, deepening the kiss.
The kiss turned fierce, all the tension and unspoken emotions between them igniting into something neither could control. Neji's hands roamed down her back, steady but urgent, while Ino's fingers tangled in his hair, tugging slightly as if to keep him there forever. Their bodies were flush against each other, neither willing to let go, both lost in the moment.
The world outside seemed to fade away, leaving only the two of them and the fire that had sparked between them. It was overwhelming, disorienting, and completely unlike anything Ino had ever imagined it could feel like.
When they finally pulled apart, both were breathless. Neji's hand lingered on her waist for a moment, his gaze locked on hers. Ino's lips were swollen, her chest heaving as she struggled to catch her breath.
"You're playing a dangerous game, Yamanaka," Neji said, his voice calm but laced with something deeper, something that sent another shiver down her spine.
And then, without another word, he stepped back, turned, and left her standing there.
Ino stared after him, her mind a whirlwind of emotions. Her knees felt weak, her heart racing as she pressed her fingers to her tingling lips. What just happened? she thought, her chest tight with an unfamiliar ache.
For the first time in as long as she could remember, she felt completely out of control—and it terrified her.
