The next day arrived quickly, and Kurose found himself eating breakfast with Tommy and Marissa.
He tried to recall if Matthias had said anything yesterday about not being here before recalling that he was going to the mountains to set a portal for them tomorrow. His thoughts then moved to where Eorna was.
After yesterday, he hadn't seen her at dinner, so he hadn't had the chance to apologise to her and say that it was once again a misunderstanding. If she didn't appear by the end of breakfast, Kurose was going to go looking for her, he decided.
"What's your plan for today, Kurose?" Marissa asked, taking him from his thoughts.
"Hm? Matthias said to relax for the day, so I guess I'll do that." He answered with a shrug.
"I see. And what about Eor-" She cut herself off as the door opened, and Kurose turned to look at who it was.
"Eorna! How lovely for you to join us, come, sit. There's still plenty if you are feeling hungry."
Kurose quickly looked away, but a quick look from Tommy told him that the boy was expecting him to explain himself to her.
He held back a sigh at that. Since when had he let this kid tell him what to do?
"I…Thanks." Eorna spoke kindly, taking a seat.
They ate in silence for a bit longer, but eventually, Kurose spoke up.
"Eorna?" He spoke hesitantly. "About yesterday…"
"Eh? No, don't worry. You didn't know, so…" She shrugged, but still refused to look at him.
"Oh? What happened between you two yesterday?" Marissa spoke teasingly. "Please, tell me all about it."
Kurose found himself looking away from Eorna once again, not willing to say anything, much to Marissa's disappointment.
"Oh, come on." She whined. "You have gotta give me something! I don't get to hear much gossip! All of the nobles are too busy trying to suck up to me and bad mouth everyone else. I need something to live off!"
"It was nothing big." Kurose spoke slowly. "Just me not understanding something, but it's fine now. We sorted it out, I think."
"Fine, keep your secrets!" Marissa pouted playfully before continuing. "Anyways, Eorna. What are your plans for today? Anything interesting?"
"Not sure." She spoke with a shrug. "I might look around the castle a bit more, but it depends what Kurose is going to do, I guess."
"Well, I'm just going to relax for the day. Maybe try to learn some more of the language. Actually, is there a library or something here?" He questioned, turning to Marissa.
"Hm? There is, in the west wing of the castle, "If you ask a servant, I'm sure they'll take you there if you get lost." She answered cheerfully.
"Thanks. Guess I'll be going to the library, if you want to come Eorna?" Kurose asked her.
She seemed to think about it for a moment before nodding. "Sure, I'll come along. I can explore later."
"Is there anything specific you want to read?" Tommy asked from beside Kurose
"Not really? I'm just curious, and I want to look through some stuff. See if anything catches my interest." He answered.
Tommy hummed before standing up. "Well, I'm going to go see miss Feibyn, and see if she needs any help! And if not, I'm gonna go work on some stuff." He spoke with a smile.
Marissa hummed at that. "Alright, make sure you say hello to Feibyn from me." She spoke kindly. "And be careful! She will probably be rushing around, trying to get armour done."
"I know mother." Tommy responded with a smile. "I have my own corner to work in, so I'll be fine."
"What about you? What are your plans?" Eorna asked Marissa once Tommy left.
"Hm…" She thought about it for a moment before shrugging. "Absolutely no idea. I might work on my paintings a bit mor, should I feel motivated. Other than that, I have nothing planned for today."
Kurose and Eorna nodded their heads at that, and they fell into pleasant conversation with Marissa as they ate.
After a short detour to his room to pick up the sheet that he and Tommy had made yesterday, the duo quickly made their way to the library, where Kurose quickly looked at the spines of the books, trying to find one that would interest him.
"So, not to repeat what Tommy said, but… What exactly are you looking for?" She asked him curiously.
"Again, something that just interests me I guess. Do you have any recommendations?" He asked.
"Nope! Never was into books, always hated being forced to read." She answered easily.
"Huh. Any reason for that, or is it just because you were forced to?" He asked, looking at the books available.
After a few moments, switching back and forth from his sheet, he took one of the books out. The spine of it had the words "Divine Beasts" on it, which Kurose thought sounded interesting. Maybe it could help direct him to what monsters would give good weapon forms.
"Well, part of it was just from being forced to read. Kind of kills any enjoyment you might get from it." She answered, and Kurose understood. "As for the other reason…" She trailed off, thinking about it for a moment.
"How about a question for a question?" Kurose suggested. "Sort of like we did with Matthias, but if you don't want to answer, you don't have to."
As he said that, he sat down at one of the various desks scattered around the library, with Eorna pulling a seat out beside him.
Eorna remained silent, and Kurose thought she was going to reject it, but was instead surprised to see her nodding her head. "Yeah, that sounds good." She answered with a smile.
"Great. Do you want to go first, or me?" He asked.
"I'll go first! You said uh… you only had one friend in your world before, right? How?" She asked, seeming genuinely confused by that.
Kurose let out a nervous laugh, his fingers tapping against the cover of the book. "Well, I guess it was because I didn't really stick out a lot? I was just the sort of person who was happy to sit in the back of the room and do my own thing, so others never really bothered or thought about me, you know?"
Eorna nodded in understanding, and Kurose continued.
"As for my friend. Well, she sort of just saw me sitting in the back one day, and decided I was going to be her friend." He spoke with a smile, thinking back on it.
"Eh? Why do you look so happy she forced you to be her friend?" She asked with a frown.
"Well… it's just me thinking back on it. I mean, she practically walked over to me and declared we were friends, and that was that. She then proceeded to drag me around the city for a week to do anything and everything until I finally told her I needed some time to relax. And then she just kinda became a constant in my life. Hell, she even got a key to my house somehow, I don't actually know where she got it, but she had one."
Kurose shook his head, brushing those memories aside. Had it really been over a month since he had last seen Sheryl? The longest amount of time he had gone since seeing her was a week at most, and here he was, a full month later.
"So!" Kurose spoke, before those thoughts could go any further. "My turn! You said you have a sister?"
Eorna perked up at that before speaking.
"Yup! My sister is the best in the world!" She spoke proudly. "She's gonna do great things in the future, I just know it."
"Like what?" Kurose asked curiously.
"No idea, but whatever she wants to do, if she sets her mind to it, I know for sure she's gonna achieve it!" She spoke with a smile.
"Well then, will I ever be introduced to her?" He asked her, already expecting a no.
"Maybe." Eorna answered with a hum, surprising him. "It depends if Matthias is going to be fine letting us travel in Dajero for a bit. If possible, I want to get her away from home, and I can do that now that I'm a hero."
"Why couldn't you do that before you were a hero?" He asked curiously. Was their home situation bad or something?
Eorna moved around a little bit before answering. "Well…I didn't exactly leave my village at a good time." She spoke slowly. "I was… part of a deal my father made with a noble when I was younger. Something about financial help for the rest of his life in exchange for me marrying him when I grew of age."
"So, an arranged marriage? Your father sold you off for money?" He asked with concern.
Eorna shifted in her seat slightly, but nodded.
"But…" Kurose stumbled over his words for a bit, but finally managed to get out a "Why?"
"Well, my father could see the potential in my sister, could tell she was smart, and when you are offered a lifetime of financial assistance…" She trailed off, and Kurose sighed.
"Well, it's kinda horrible that he was just focused on your sister and not you, but let's ignore that for a moment. Why did you run away? Was it that bad, or was it something else?"
"The person I was promised to… He helped people out, in exchange for favours." She explained slowly. "For example, if your family was low on money, you couldn't put food on the table, that sort of stuff, he would come in, feed your entire family and wave it off as if it was nothing."
Eorna paused for a moment, letting Kurose understand, and he looked at her with more concern, which she ignored.
"A few weeks would pass, you'd get back on your feet, be able to do it all yourself, and you would wave it off as him being nice, but then he would ask for a private meeting. You'd thank him for it all, be appreciative, and then he would start suggesting things. Stuff you could do to make it up to him, a few veiled threats about having to collect what he was owed…"
She trailed off at that, and Kurose found himself reaching out to her before pausing.
"Did you…" He didn't want to finish the sentence, but Eorna seemed to understand, and she shook her head rapidly.
"No, I didn't. Just… One of the ladies in the village did, and she told everyone what happened. She got driven out by some people at a later point, but most people knew it was the lord trying to save face at that point."
"So your father still took it, even despite knowing?" He asked with concern.
"Well, yeah. But it was my sister's future. It's better for it to be me than her, and I mean… look at me now!" She spoke with an obvious, fake smile. "I'm a hero, I can do whatever I want. So I can take my sister away from my father, and let her live a happy life here. She doesn't need to be under threat, doesn't need her funding cut because her sister didn't follow orders. None of that will matter if I can just bring her here."
Kurose finally reached out fully, taking Eorna's now shaking hands and covering them with his own.
"Is this why you wanted to know when we were going to Dajero?" He asked kindly.
Eorna didn't respond with words, simply nodding her head.
"Alright. Well, I assume the Dajero wave will be pretty soon after this one, so how about this. Once we are done with that wave, we get Matthias to portal us to the place he has saved in Dajero, unless the wave is closer, and then you and I head there. How does that sound?" He asked her.
"What about Sera?" She asked him.
"Well, that's up to him. He seems pretty interested in practicing, and I think it's good for him. It gives him something to focus on whilst we mess around with methods." He spoke with a smile.
"Yeah, I guess that's true. I'll just ask him when we get closer to it, I guess. Anyways!" Eorna spoke with fake cheer. "It's my turn to ask a question now!"
She thought about it for a moment, humming as she did.
"When we had our first night outside the city, when we discovered I could make stew with my dagger. You spoke about the constellations being different in your world. Could you tell me about them?"
Kurose made a show of thinking about it for a moment, but he already knew what the answer was going to be.
"Sure. Let's see…" He thought about it for a minute, deciding which to begin with, the book he had picked up remained forgotten, but Kurose's hands never left Eorna's.
After his talk with Eorna, Kurose once again found himself in front of the room he had been in with Tommy the previous day, his bag with all the tools Woodrow had given him at his side.
He knocked on the door, and getting no response, he opted to open the door. A quick look around showed that the room was empty.
Guess he's helping out Feibyn like he said then. He thought to himself with a shrug.
He stepped in, closing the door behind himself before moving over to the desk. He placed down his bag on the side, taking out the tools he needed to make a Charme.
"Alright. Let's see…" Kurose murmured to himself, looking at his sheet. "What sort of Charme should I even make?"
His fingers tapped against the desk as he thought it over. He had no idea what sort of Charme he might want. Did he want to make something so he could attack? Or did he want to buff himself? How did support Charmes even work?
He shook his head. That was something he would just have to figure out.
"Well, I might as well get started on something for Eorna if I can't figure out something for myself. She's probably going to want something related to buffing her speed. So maybe some sort of speed buffing Charme?"
He took one of the pencils from the pot Tommy kept on his desk, and slowly wrote out the sentence on the bottom of the sheet. It took him a while to do so, but once he was sure the writing was fine, he got to work.
This task took him a decent amount of time. Between not being used to inscribing the words onto the wooden disk, and being unsure that his spelling was correct.
Kurose was so focused that he didn't notice when Tommy entered, nor did he notice when the boy watched from over his shoulder to see what he was making. Only once he was done did Tommy finally speak.
"Can I hold it?" He asked Kurose.
Kurose jumped up from his seat in surprise, and stared down at Tommy for a moment before speaking.
"How long have you been there for?" He asked weakly.
"A bit." Tommy answered with a shrug. "I didn't see the beginning, but it seems like you did a good job. Now, can I check it over?" Tommy asked once more.
Kurose looked between him and the Charme before slowly handing it over.
"I'm not going to try and activate it, because it's yours and you put hard work into it. I don't wanna destroy it." He spoke simply, as if expecting that was the reason Kurose had hesitated to give it to him.
Kurose hadn't even considered Tommy trying to activate the Charme, and felt a bit bad that the kid had assumed that was his concern.
"I wasn't concerned about that." Kurose spoke up. "I was just nervous about the quality of it. I don't even know if it will work."
Tommy hummed at that, continuing to look over the Charme. "Well, it's a bit rough in some places, but that's to be expected, especially for your first Charme. The sentence is fine. No spelling mistakes and no unnecessary words. All in all, it's pretty good."
He extended his hand to Kurose, who picked up the Charme as Tommy continued.
"I would recommend you keep practicing with Mega tier Charmes for now. It's common for people working with higher tier Charmes to practice making what they want on a lower tier one to lessen the chance of them making mistakes on the final product." He explained.
Kurose nodded, looking at the Charme in his hand. "Do you mind if I try this out?"
"Nope, go ahead!" Tommy spoke cheerfully.
With his permission, Kurose used the Charme. "Windstride: Mega"
The spell was letting Kurose choose a target, from either himself or Tommy. He thought about using it on himself, then decided to use it on Tommy for the time being.
"Yup! My speed has gone up a bit, so it definitely works." Tommy spoke, nodding his head. "But what about Magic Reinforcement? How much does that improve the Charme? Can you try it at different levels?" He asked Kurose excitedly.
"No idea." Kurose answered honestly. "Guess it's time to try it out."
He tried it out at various ranks, up to V before Tommy had him stop. Whilst Tommy wrote down some stuff he had found out about the different ranks, Kurose realised he couldn't remove the points from the spell at the moment, instead having to wait 24 hours to do so.
Well, it's a good thing I have enough points to get one other spell up to rank five at least. Though, it seems like it takes more and more points per rank, so if I had to guess… rank six would likely cost a majority of the points I get back from this.
Kurose let out a sigh at that, but waved it off. Rank five would be more than good enough for now. He still needed to figure out what sort of Charme he was going to make himself after all.
"Alright. I've written it down, but I wanna see if it's any different for Eorna!" Tommy called out.
"Why would there be any difference?" was Kurose's question, and Tommy thought it over for a moment.
"Well, there's the difference between you being the Holy Hero, whilst Eorna and father are Lesser Heroes. Do the methods work differently at all? Are they weaker for the lesser weapons? Or do they give equal gains?"
Kurose opened his mouth, before shutting it. He hadn't even considered methods acting differently between the weapons. He held back a groan at that.
"Wait, before we go find Eorna to test this, I want to make myself a Charme, but I have no idea what to make."
Tommy paused at that before answering. "Well. You seem to have plenty of… would they be classified as support skills?" He shook his head, dismissing his own question before continuing, "Either way, you have a ton of skills that focus on restraining and all that, but not really many attacking skills, from what you said last night. Plus, all of your skills drain your… SP, right?"
Kurose nodded in confirmation, and Tommy continued.
"So if you have a mix of skills, you might as well, for the time being at least, make a Charme that can be attack based. That way you can save your SP for supporting others, and getting yourself out of tough spots, whilst using your Mana to take out monsters!"
"Huh. You make a valid point."
"Plus, you can always just make more Charmes later. They don't even technically need to be on discs." He added on at the end.
"Eh? What do you mean they don't need to be on discs? Explain that a bit more." Kurose asked. He hadn't heard Woodrow say it before, but then again, it wasn't like he had spent much time with the wizard.
"Well, it's usually something you learn later, I definitely wouldn't recommend you doing it right now." Tommy began, nodding his head.
"Most Jewelry that nobles wear are actually Charme accessories, usually Rings or Bracelets. The words are inscribed on the inside of the accessories to keep it hidden. It's usually self defense things, such as turning invisible, giving them defense buffs, all of that stuff. They usually are support Charmes."
"So, why don't more people do that? Make their accessories Charmes?" He asked.
"Firstly, they tend to be weaker, or consume more Mana. So lets say a Mega Charme does 50 damage, and takes 50 mana. If you transferred the spell on the Charme exactly, it would drop down to 80% of the original power, whilst costing 120% of the original mana cost. They are essentially more for showing off that you have the wealth to buy it, rather than actually practical. They can be used in a pinch, sure, but once more, it takes more resources for less power. Plus, at that point you should probably buy a regular, enchanted accessory, or pay to get your ring or whatever enchanted, but people are strange about it."
"I see…" Kurose spoke, nodding his head.
Only Kurose didn't see. How did it depend on what they were on? Why would having it on a disk make it stronger? A disk was essentially a circle, as were rings and bracelets, yet the first was better than the other two.
He held back a groan. Why was magic so annoying? He shook his head before sitting back down. He just had to make a Charme for himself, then he could ignore it until he could be bothered to make yet another.
"Alright…" Kurose spoke with a breath. "Something simple, let's see…"
He once again wrote out the words, checking with Tommy to ensure they were right before finally inscribing them onto the next wooden disk. His hand was a little shaky, but it passed Tommy's checks, and he was handed it back.
He held it in his hands as Tommy dragged out a dummy for him to try it on. Kurose simply raised an eyebrow, but aimed the Charme at the dummy. The words appeared in his mind again, and he spoke them before he even realised what he was saying.
"Piercing Ray: Mega Hey hold-"
The familiar spell shot into the dummy, and left a decent mark on it. Much better than the first time he had used the spell, where it had barely left a small mark on the tree.
"What's wrong? It worked, right?" Tommy asked him.
"Well yeah, it obviously worked. But I literally used this same Charme back in Ortensca! And I'm fairly certain the words on mine aren't the same as his! That one was absolutely covered in words!"
"Oh that." Tommy said, as if that explained everything.
It may have to the young prince, but it explained absolutely nothing to Kurose. Thankfully, he spoke again upon noticing Kuroses understanding.
"Well, from my own understanding of it at least, some spells, regardless of the length of what you write on the Charme, get pushed into the same box, so to say. So if two people do a firebolt Charme, one could simply write 'ball of fire', whilst another could write as much as possible about the fire ball, describing it as a sphere, the intensity of the flames, all of that stuff. However both would come out as a simple firebolt." Tommy answered.
Kurose stared at him for a moment before sighing. He might not have known the wizard for long, but it did seem like him to do something like that.
"There's still a bit more stuff to explain, but I don't think you want to hear it right now." Tommy answered with a nervous laugh.
"No. I don't actually. I appreciate it all, but there's just… so much! I mean, there's gotta be a different way to cast spells somehow."
Kurose refused to believe that Charmes were the only form of spell casting available. He didn't want to have to go through the process of carrying around a dozen Charmes,
Tommy shrugged in response to Kurose. "Well, unless you somehow manage to figure out how to do vocal spell casting again, then it's likely you will have to stay with Charmes unfortunately."
Kurose groaned again, and Tommy laughed.
After a period of time, Tommy and Kurose found Eorna, who had been exploring the castle, and looking for Kurose to drag him around with her.
He handed her the Charme, explaining what it did, and Eorna had thanked him before hugging him. Kurose had frozen up at that, but had to admit the hug was nice, even if he didn't say it out loud.
Tommy also had Eorna cast the spell at various ranks, which helped all three of them discover that the lesser weapons got less gains from the strengthening methods than the Accessory. Mainly that the buff Eorna gave Tommy was lower than Kurose's, but also the fact that Eorna didn't have enough points to rank up the spell to VI despite being a higher level than Kurose.
"I see…" Tommy spoke with a hum. "I guess it makes sense for the Holy Accessory to be able to get more out of these Enhancement methods than the Lesser weapons, but it's odd that it hasn't been recorded before."
"Maybe it has, but you just haven't found them?" Eorna suggested to him.
"It could be. Maybe I just skimmed over them…?" Tommy spoke slowly, implying he didn't believe what he was saying.
Kurose had to agree with him. For the little time he had known Tommy, he didn't seem the type of person to skip over that sort of information.
"I guess I'll just have to read over the stuff again, when I get a free moment." He continued, unaware of Kurose's thoughts.
"Oh, Kurose. Have you tried strengthening the weapon from the boss yet?" Eorna asked before continuing. "I didn't have enough to get it all the way, but I got it decently far."
"Not yet. I'll probably sort it before I go to sleep, or in the morning." He answered with a shrug.
"That's fair." Eorna spoke, nodding her head. "So, what's your plan for the rest of the day?" She asked curiously. "Are you going to keep making more Charmes? Or do you have something else planned?"
"Nope. I have got nothing else planned." He answered her. "Why, you got something in mind?"
"Yup! I never got to drag you around the castle to look for stuff, did I? You ran off before I could do anything."
Kurose coughed at that, avoiding Eorna's look, but lowered his head.
"I guess I did…"He managed to get out before clearing his throat. "But you can show me around now, right?" He said with a nervous smile.
"Yep, what about you Tommy? Do you want to come along, or have something else in mind?" She asked him.
Tommy seemed to think it over for a moment, looking between both Eorna and Kurose before shaking his head.
"Nope! If I'm with you, I'll end up showing you a ton of secrets. I want you to find them yourself." He declared. With that said, he turned around, heading towards the door before speaking again. "Have fun exploring!"
Once Tommy was gone, Eorna grabbed Kurose's arm, and once again began to drag him around. Kurose knew better than to complain at this, used to Eorna dragging him around, and settled in for spending the rest of the day exploring the castle.
