Chapter 3: Training

Agent BM: Thx

Darraq: Thank you

After telling her parents that she truly wanted to join the walk-a-thon, they all went to the city hall and signed her up. They learned that minor contestants would be wearing a special bracelet that could be tracked by one of the race organizers.

Along the way they would be staying at hotels that were already booked and paid for, and they would be able to call their relatives any time. Bessie signed her name on the paper, her parents signed as witnesses, and signed papers.

"There we go, Bessie. You're all signed up. Please report here on the day of the race at 6:00 a.m."

"No problem."

And with that they left city hall. "I can't wait till the race." Bessie said, as wheeled herself outside.

"I'm glad to see your enthusiasm, Bessie." said Brittany.

"But you're going to have to get ready for it." Leon advised.

"Don't worry, Dad. I will."

But in the back of her mind, she was wondering how she would do it.

The next day Bessie met up with her friends in the park, and told them she's officially in the walk-a-thon.

"That's great, Bessie." said Lincoln.

"We'll be sure to watch you on TV." Clyde told her.

"Thanks, guys. But my parents said I have to get ready for this thing." Bessie said.

"Sounds easy enough." Liam mentioned.

"Yeah, but I'm not exactly sure how to train for a walk-a-thon. It's not like I'll actually be walking."

Just then, Taylor, Anderson, and Pablo walked by.

"Excuse me? Did I hear that right, Wheelchair Girl you're gonna be in a walk-a-thon?" asked Anderson.

"That's none of your business." Bessie told them.

"(Chuckles), I don't know how you're gonna be in a walk-a-thon if you can't even walk." Pablo sneered.

Bessie scowled.

"I am going to be in the walk-a-thon. And it doesn't matter that I'm in a wheelchair." she said strongly.

The three older bullies just smirked.

"Whatever wheelchair girl. I bet you won't last a day." Taylor told her.

And they walked off.

"Don't listen to them, Bessie. You'll do great." Stella encouraged.

"Thanks, I can last more than just one day. I just have to train hard, but how?"

Lincoln then got an idea.

"I think I know who can help you." he told Bessie.

Back at Lincoln's house, Lynn was in the backyard practicing soccer.

"And Lynn Loud shoots, and she scores." she said, as she kicked the ball into the goal.

Then Lincoln, Clyde, and Bessie came and approached her.

"Hey, Lynn got a minute?" Lincoln asked.

"What's up, Stinkin'?" Lynn asked.

"We need your help." Clyde mentioned.

The three explained to her how Bessie was going to take part in the walk-a-thon, and that she needed to start training.

"So you want me to be your coach huh?"

"Well yes, if you would." Bessie replied.

"Hmm, well I'll have to check my schedule to see if I can squeeze you in."

She thought about it for a minute, and then answered.

"I'll do it."

"Thanks, Lynn."

"But remember Lynn, don't push her too far." Lincoln told her sternly.

"Relax, I know how to train newbies."

Then Lynn turned to Bessie.

"We'll start your training tomorrow, at 10:00. Where are we doing it at?"

Bessie though for a minute, and then answered.

"We'll meet at Growing Lives. They have a gym there."

"All right. That's where we'll go."

The next day, Bessie met Lynn at Growing Lives.

"Now remember, Bessie don't push yourself too hard." Brittany told her daughter.

"Don't worry, Mom." Bessie replied.

Rita rolled up in Vanzilla 2.0 with Lynn in the front seat.

"I'll pick you up in a couple hours, Lynn. And don't push Bessie too hard. We wouldn't want any trouble from Bessie's parents." Rita mentioned to her.

"Relax, Mom. I'll take it one day at a time."

She got out of the van, and met Bessie outside.

"Morning, Bessie. Ready to train?"

"You bet."

And with that, they went into the building.

In the gym, Lynn and Bessie got to work. Using the equipment, Lynn had Bessie lift some dumbbells and kettle bells.

"Okay, Bessie that's enough." Lynn told her.

"Whew, that was quite a workout."

"We're not done yet, Bessie."

"All right, what's next?"

"Okay, remind me can you move you legs a bit?"

"A little bit. Remember I'm not completely paralyzed."

"Then it's time to stretch those leg muscles."

Bessie used the leg extension machine and leg curl machine. Ms. Goldsteen walked over to them.

"Hello, Bessie. Your parents called and said were going to be here today." she told them.

"Hi, Ms. Goldsteen. Lynn here is helping me train for the walk-a-thon."

"Glad to see you're doing something productive this summer. Just be sure not to overwork yourself. And if you two plan on staying for lunch, the cafeteria is serving spaghetti." "Okay, Ms. Goldsteen."

And with that, she left the two to continue working.

When they finished, they went to the cafeteria to get lunch. After getting their trays they found a table to sit at. As they started eating, Saskia came up to them.

"H-h-hi Bessie." she greeted.

"Hi, Saskia. This is Lynn." Bessie introduced.

The two girls said hi to each other, and they told her about the walk-a-thon.

"That's really cool, Bessie. I'll be sure to w-w-etch on the TV."

"Wetch?" Lynn wondered.

Bessie explained to Lynn about Saskia's condition. After they finished eating, it was time for Bessie and Lynn to go.

"We'll meet the day after tomorrow to train some more." Lynn told.

"Got it." Bessie replied.

And they waited for their rides to come.

Lynn kept training Bessie for the next couple of weeks. And it was going well, as Bessie was getting stronger. One day, while Bessie was over at Lincoln's house hanging out, she accidentally ran over a nail which deflated one of her wheelchair's wheels.

"Oh no." she complained.

"Sorry, Bessie. I guess Lana left her nails out again." Lincoln told her.

"Did someone call my name?" Lana asked, as she came into the room.

"Lana, your nails deflated Bessie's tires."

"Oops, sorry. Don't worry, Bess I can get that tire fixed for ya." Lana assured.

As she fixed Bessie's tire, Bessie and Lincoln talked more about the walk-a-thon.

"You're going to travel 300 miles in your wheelchair?" Lana asked in surprise.

"I'm certainly gonna try." Bessie replied.

"Well...no offense, Bessie but this chair's not gonna make it."

"It won't?"

"Nope. But if you'd like I can upgrade this chair so it'll be ready for anything on the road."

"Can you really do that, Lana?" Lincoln asked her.

"Sure, but I'm going to need your chair for a while Bessie."

"But Lana, I need my chair to get around."

"Hmm, well why don't you come back tomorrow that way you can hang out here while I work on it."

"That sounds like a good idea."

"I just need a picture of your chair so I can start making plans."

She quickly snapped a picture of Bessie's chair with her phone, and then went upstairs.

That night, Lana started making plans for Bessie's chair.

"Okay, looks like I can put some major upgrades on this chair." she said to herself.

Just then Lisa came into the room.

"Excuse me Lana, but could I trouble you to borrow your toolbox? I need to give Todd some tuning up."

"Go ahead Lisa. Just don't keep it for too long; I need it for tomorrow for Bessie's chair."

"Bessie, you mean Lincoln's friend in the wheelchair?"

Lana explained to Lisa about Bessie being in the walk-a-thon, and how she was going to make some upgrades to her chair.

"Upgrades huh? Interesting, would you mind if I assisted?"

Lana thought about it, and then agreed.

The next day when Bessie came over, Lincoln told her they'd be staying down in the living room watching TV, while the girls worked on her chair in the garage. As Lana and Lisa worked on the chair, Leni came home.

"Hi guys, what are you doing with Bessie's special rolling chair?" she asked.

"We're upgrading it for a race Bessie's doing." explained Lana.

"Upgrading? That's like redecorating right? Can I help?"

"Well it's not exactly like that Leni. But perhaps you could help out with the more practical features." Lisa replied.

And then the three sisters got to work.

A couple hours later, the chair was finished.

"All right, Bessie presenting your brand new wheelchair." Lana introduced.

And with that, Lisa and Leni wheeled in the chair, and Bessie and Lincoln were really impressed. It was now painted bright red with orange flames. The wheels were now bigger and sturdier. There was a cup holder on one of the armrests, there was a headrest, and the seat had been reupholstered.

"Wow! It looks amazing." Bessie awed.

"Go on, try it out." Lincoln urged.

They helped her off the couch, and into the chair.

"It's feels great. What are these?" Bessie wondered, referring to some buttons that were on the other arm rest.

"Those are the controls for some features I set up. This button's for cooling the seat, that one's for the portable fan, and that one's for adjusting the seat." Lisa explained.

"I also added those new tires. They're hard to penetrate, and can withstand anything on the road. There's also some side bags, and a large bag in the back so you can carry all your stuff. There's also a foldable visor you can use to keep the sun out." Lana told.

"And I painted your chair the color of fire so it'll go fast, and made the chair really comfortable." Leni said.

"Thanks you guys. This chair is great." Bessie replied gratefully.
