Kagome was walking as quickly as her heels and the thin layer of snow reforming on the street would allow her. It had started snowing again a few minutes after she left InuYasha's apartment, though that was the least of her concerns, given how late she was running to the dinner date they had planned that morning while they exchanged gentle caresses after the intimacy they had shared, making the most of the last five minutes they had before InuYasha had to get ready for work. She had stayed at the apartment intending to make progress on her own work, which she had decided to do remotely to be able to travel to Nakano. She made one last call to finalize the details of two manuscripts that needed to go to the production department that day. By the time that call ended and her eyes closed to allow herself a break, she remembered her promise with InuYasha and quickly opened her eyes, noticing the sun setting on the horizon as the street lights began to turn on.
"Shit!" she let out while on her way. She was going to be late.
She headed to their room, where she found her suitcase in a corner on the floor, the same place she had left it the night before upon her arrival. She hadn't even bothered to unpack; she had only taken out clean underwear and the nightgown she wore all day. She sighed, feeling like the worst girlfriend in the world. After all, what did she know about being someone's girlfriend?
She felt like she wasn't doing things right. Ever since she accepted the new job position, she had been focused on doing it well. InuYasha and the time she spent with him were the main casualties, leaving him alone too often. As much as she wanted to justify herself, she knew she was prioritizing one aspect of her life over the others. She wanted to please InuYasha and fulfill the commitment they had made to maintain this long-distance relationship. However, she couldn't pretend she was doing it well, especially when she couldn't keep a simple promise today's.
She took her phone out of her coat pocket to check if InuYasha had responded to the message she left him while she was getting ready to leave the apartment. She confirmed that the message had been received, but there was still no response. She tried to calm herself; she just had to turn the next corner, and the izakaya would be in sight. As soon as she did so, InuYasha entered her view, standing outside the place. The snow was falling in light and sparse flakes that didn't seem to bother him as he talked and laughed amicably with two girls Kagome didn't know.
She walked towards them confidently, wanting to hide the strange feeling that settled in her stomach.
