Steve was sitting in his hotel in Tokyo, getting ready to make a long-distance phone call to Moscow, Russia. It was close to noon there, as it was almost six PM in Tokyo. He'd had a phone call six hours earlier, as it was noon in Tokyo and 9 PM the day before in Chicago. He had a conversation with Laura, making sure she was doing okay. He was sad he was going to miss her next prenatal appointment in a few days. She just reminded him it was okay and jokingly told him he better not miss the next one. Max was going with her to the next appointment, so she wouldn't be alone. Steve did promise because that one was going to be another ultrasound, and he didn't want to miss seeing his baby again. He was hoping to find out if they were having a Lawrence or a Stephanie.
He smiled from the fresh memory because they agreed on he would name the boy and she would name the girl. He wanted a name that resembled Laura's name. Laura told him, she wanted to name their child that resembled his name. But also wanted her parents name to be incorporated into their child since they were both big influences in their lives. So they agreed on Lawrence Carl for a boy and Stephanie Harriette for a girl. But were not going to annouce the gender nor names until their baby was born in late September.
Now becoming a dad, and since him and Laura dound out, Steve wanted to reconcile with his own parents. Herb and Roberta, but he had not talked to them since the day before Laura and him got married. Their only excise was they were too busy and would never catch a flight in time. He was too upset and disappointed that the only thing he told them was he did not need them in his life because Carl and Harriette were more like a mother and father to him than they ever were. Yes he still talked to certain Urkel family members but when his parents were brought up, Steve did not want to hear a thing about them. He had gotten their new phone number from Myrtle and finally decided to call them.
"Hello?" Answered a nasally woman on the other end.
"Doctor Roberta Urkel?" Steve questioned feeling his heart race like crazy towards the psychiatrist.
"Yes! Who is this?" Questioned back Steve's mother.
"It's me your only child, Steven Q. Urkel." He piped up.
"Who? I no longer have a child as he no longer exists for the last four years." His mother answered coldly.
"I was angry because I was getting married to the woman of my dreams. Most of the Urkel clan came but not my own parents who is supposed to love me unconditionally. And have my full support..." Steve was getting upset just trying to stay calm while talking to his mother.
He did not hear a repsonse until he heard Herb Urkel come on the phone. "Steven you told us how you felt. So respectfully kept our distance. Remember you have Harriette and Carl Winslow as your parents now."
Steve took a deep breath before he lost his cool. "That is because no matter what I did they were always there for me. Yes I made them mad many of times but they still welcomed me with open arms. They never abandoned me. When Laura and I became engaged they had my back completely. They were there for me when I went up in space and there when I came back. I tried calling you and Roberta and tell you the exciting news. Not once did you pick up the phone. That was a big deal for me. And not one word from my parents. Every time I had big news or just wanted to call on your birthdays or holidays you two never cared. Well maybe you'll care about this. I am going to be a dad. Laura and I are expecting our first child and I am beyond excited to meet my baby. And no matter what if he or she is clumsy or awkward I will never abandon them. I will be a better father than you'll ever be. I learned and still learning from the best father I know, Carl Winslow!" Steve could not hold back no more. He could also say no more, so he just hung up. It was not until then he felt tears running down his face. The one person he wanted right now was many miles away asleep in their bed.
He knew Laura was alseep by now it being 3 am in the morning now, but Steve needed to hear her voice. "Hello?" Said Laura's groggy voice.
"Sweetums I am so sorry for waking you but I just needed to hear your beautiful voice." Steve said trying to hide his disappointment.
Laura cleared her throat as she could hear something was wrong with her husband. "Babes, tell me, you know I'll listen. Just might have to make it to me when you get home." She could not help tease him a little.
"You'll know I will do anything for you... Laura Lee I just tried to tell my parents about our baby news and well..." Steve tired his best to stay calm and choke on his tears.
"Oh Steve... I wish I could have been there." Laura felt Steve's anger now but stayed cool as he talked.
"To comfort me right?" He knew that was half the truth.
"That and so I could give them a peace of my mind what I thought of them. I know I dont have that place to do but you are my husband. They would not have an option but to hear my opinion on them... Did you tell them off?" She asked being curious about his conversation woth his parents.
"I sure did..." Steve began to say with a smile.
"That's my Steve!" Laura said proudly, she loved when stood up for himself. It always made her heart happy on how much confidence Steve had on himself.
Steve loved Laura on how much better he felt just on the short time talking to her. "You know my love, I think I am completely done with them. If they want to be in our life or child's life they have to make the move first. Trust me it's going to take a long time for them before I forgive them of I do at all. I am just done extending that branch. I have other Urkel's that love me for who I am and I have your family that treat me like their own. Plus now just us as our own little family..."
"That's right and our baby is going to be so lucky to have you as their daddy. And I agree with you, let Herb and Roberta come to you and let it be on you if you want them in our lives. I usually respect my elders and can keep my cool but I am going to let you know I am not going to hold my tongue because all the crap they put you through from your childhood to now. You are my husband and I will defend you when I need to." Laura told her husband as he had her full support and more.
"I love you Laura Lee! Thank you for making me feel better. I will let you get your beauty rest so you have energy and can grow our baby." Steve told her with a big smile on his face.
"I love you too, Steve. And I love making you feel better. Call me if you need to talk more. I might be a beast in the morning and might chew off your head but I am here for you." Laura confessed but got a laugh and a snort out of her husband.
"Will do my love. Kevin and I going to go tear up Tokyo with are amazing vocal pipes in some karaoke!" Steve told her as he began to warm up.
"Oh boy! They are for in a treat!" Laura said sarcastically, but was smiling big wishing she was actually there to have a good laugh.
"Hey I might not be the best singer, but I sure belt those notes out and have fun doing so. Oh that's Kevin, he's been impatient because he's ready to sing 'Mmmbop.' for Heather as I know what I am going to sing, 'My Girl.' for my own girl. " Steve told her only hearing her laugh. But promised her to show the video of them singing as he brought his video camera so she can even laugh harder when she and Heather see the it.
Laura shook her head and rolled her eyes as she heard Kevin start to sing and Steve joining it. She told Steve she loved him one last time for awhile and laid her back down. She was happy to make Steve feel better about his parents, but she could not wait until he was home from working Tokyo on making a better smart car.
