For the beginning of the fourth challenge of the season, Mercutio and Tracy led the twenty competitors into a gymnasium inside the academy. The floors were sleek and shiny, with basketball stripes on the wood and bleachers set up on both sides of the big court. The contestants eyed the space, some of them without a care in the world, but Jill was the opposite.
"Yes! I hoped there'd be a basketball court somewhere in the academy."
"Hopefully your enthusiasm is contagious," Mercutio replied, "because today's challenge will require lots of energy."
"Fuck yeah," Jayshawn pumped a fist.
Mercutio's voice echoed around the court walls. "Today's major? Sports and exercise science! Today we'll be playing dodgeball!"
Confessional - Jill
"If only it were a game of basketball! We would've won in a minute flat!"
Confessional - Matcha
"Of all the sports possible, he chose dodgeball? Didn't they already do that on Total Drama Island?"
Confessional - Noah
Noah sighed and slumped his face against the table. "Can't wait for all the lovely memories dodgeball brings me to come flowing back..."
End of confessionals
"Yeah, dude, it's high school gym class all over again!" Zee exclaimed.
"Except this time, it's for one million dollars," Mercutio reminded him. "Teams will be playing in mini-teams of four against each other. Each round, you can discuss with your team which contestants you'll be choosing for that quartet. However, each round, you must switch out your four selected teammates. Then after that, if you choose to go back to any amount of your previously selected teammates, you may. The roster must change each round. That is the idea. In order to win, you need to have five consecutive wins against the other team."
"Hang on. 'Consecutive'?" echoed MK.
"You heard that right."
"Sounds like we might be at this for a long while then, right?" Damien asked.
"You could well be right. Come on, people. You're here to win a million dollars. You didn't expect this to be an easy feat, did you?"
"But I thought you said we'd be doing gentle challenges this year," murmured Athena.
"A game of dodgeball won't kill you." Mercutio scoffed. "Come on now."
"We're gonna be here all day," MK muttered.
"Maybe not," Jill argued. "I might be able to help us out."
"Yay, Jill!" Athena cheered.
"Ain't goin' mean shit once you got me to deal with," Jayshawn jeered.
"Do we have to hear you act all big and bad every time we do a challenge?" Matcha complained.
"Heh, at least until they vote him off," MK replied. "Come on, Grads, is Jayshawn really much more valuable to you than Alanna or Shawn?"
Zee chuckled. "That's pretty funny to hear you guys say, 'cause on the very first episode we actually tried to vote off Jayshaw-"
"Would you shut the hell up, you green hat, Indian-lookin' mothafucka?"
Fish cracked up all throughout Jayshawn's angry response, Londyn chuckling along with him. Bowie facepalmed. A glazed, oblivious smile on Zee's face, he replied, "Hispanic descent, yo, but I can understand the misconception, dawg."
"All right, all right!" Mercutio interrupted. "Yeesh, comrades. Such yapping. Yap yap yap. They're all fluent in yapanese. Get picking your first four competitors. Tracy will release the balls"-Cody chortled, quickly pressing a hand to his mouth-"once the eight competitors are ready. The sooner you get picking, the sooner one team goes back to the dorms, and another readies up to lose a member."
The Dropouts and the Grads each huddled up. The camera focused on the Dropouts first.
"Okay, guys," Matcha started, "I say we have me and Jill go first. Jill, you seem to know what you're doing in the realm of sports. Who else should we have go first?"
"Hmm..." Jill wondered. "Caleb, how precisely can you throw a ball?"
"Somewhat, but I can throw it with a lot of force."
"Let's take that risk to start off with; it's only round one. Kobe, I want you to sit this one out so you can take over for round two."
"Aight, aight."
"Let me do it!" Lauren chirped. "Put me in, coach! I'm begging!"
Confessional - Matcha
"I sometimes wish we could lose so we could vote her off." She sighed. "As long as she's here, I guess taking a risk with her on a team with three capable teammates should work out fine."
"She-" peeped Brook behind the camera, then she softly cleared her throat.
"What's that?"
"Sh-she won that challenge with the fire trucks. Maybe she's got a shot."
Matcha nodded. "You could be right. Thanks, Brook."
End of confessional
Meanwhile, Jayshawn had a predictable decision over on the Grads' side of the court.
"Me! I'm in first!"
"Of course you are," Noah muttered.
"Noah, you ain't goin' anywhere fuckin' near this court. You fucked up good back on Total Drama Island, and we been losin' too hard to risk that again."
"Gotta agree with Jayshawn for once," Bowie added. "Noah, hang back."
"Fine, but if we lose, this time you can't blame me."
A little bit later, Mercutio herded off the seven non-participating Dropouts to one set of bleachers and the five Grads to the other. Matcha, Jill, Caleb, and Lauren stepped out onto the court for the first round, with Jayshawn, Fish, Cody, and Izzy for the Grads. Izzy glared at Lauren with an intensity in her eyes, while Lauren flashed her an evil grin. Londyn completely destroyed the ferocity of the moment, standing and shouting, "I'm gonna go back to the garage and get changed! This is no challenge for a skirt!"
"Darn, I should've packed something besides dresses," Athena murmured.
"Teams, ready?" Mercutio boomed.
"You're going down..." Izzy growled under her breath.
"You can't save humanity," Lauren spoke under hers.
"Tracy! Unleash the balls!"
Cody chuckled over it, then Tracy dragged in a huge net filled with dodgeballs, tossing it out and sending the balls bouncing against the sleek wood. Heeding the immortal words of Patches O'houlihan, he dodged, ducked, dipped, dove, and dodged out of the way of Caleb tossing balls at him. The balls hit the other side of the court hard, none of them connecting with the geek. [1]
"Pick on someone else!" Cody shouted.
Caleb shrugged, dodging aside from a ball as he tossed another that pounded Fish. Unfortunately for him, Fish had caught the ball.
"Oof! Caleb is out!" Mercutio announced.
With the guy distracted, Jill and Matcha each thrust Fish with balls that eliminated him from the round. Izzy let out a roar and leaped into the air, flipping from her hands to her feet as she grabbed a ball and slammed Lauren off her feet. Izzy cheered, leaping around like a monkey before Matcha eliminated her.
Jayshawn hucked a ball at Matcha, getting her out. Next, Jill swerved aside as Cody tossed a ball, instead grabbing it in midair and eliminating him. As Jill did what she did out on the court, Iko was left watching with awe. He watched her figure, the bounce of her hair as she moved around like a gazelle on African plains. She had such immaculate control over her footing that it was like she knew where she needed to be ten steps ahead of time. Overall, it was the sight of Jill's lithe form and beauty that had Iko so starstruck.
Confessional - Iko
"Wow... she is so damn pretty... I've gotta find some way to talk to her. Too many times have I kept my head down and ignored the girls so far out of my league. This isn't Indonesia; maybe they do it differently here in Canada. I've got to try. I have to."
Suddenly, Iko's attention turned to the silver-haired girl behind the camera.
"H-hey, if you want, I can leave the confessional space alone."
Brook was too nervous to meet eyes with him, instead shifting her sleeved hands around and staring at the floor. "Oh, uhm, that's okay. Don't let me keep you from speaking your mind."
"Okay, just didn't wanna make you uncomfortable."
"Thanks."
End of confessional
Jayshawn was fast to toss more balls Jill's way, but she proved nimble enough to evade and hit him out.
"Goddammit!" Jayshawn roared.
"Dropouts win round one!" Mercutio announced. "All right, teams, you have one minute each to pick your contestants for round two. This game isn't slowing down for any longer than a minute at a time."
Jayshawn was muttering curses under his breath as he stomped back to the Grads' bleachers with his teammates.
"What are you so worked up about, stupid?" Bowie retorted. "That was only round one."
"Piss off, homie. All these L's pilin' up." He let out an audible, monstrous growl. "It's drivin' me fuckin' insane!"
"How do you think I feel? That's why we're giving this challenge everything we've got."
"The redhead on their team is really good at this..." Cody murmured. "She's also really hot."
"Yeah, well, I don't give a fuck," Jayshawn retorted. "We're gonna be even better. Aight?"
"I'll go next," Bowie decided. "Zee, you come with, and Stephen, too."
"Killer," Zee commented.
"Londyn's still not back, so, Noah, you're in, too."
Confessional - Noah
"It was only a matter of time before the physical challenges showed up. The ones where I couldn't get by, you know, walking, like in the first one with the Russian killer. I'm not getting voted out third in a dodgeball challenge again, thank you very much."
End of confessional
"Who's up?" peeped Athena.
"Kobe and Damien, you guys go," Jill suggested.
"Holden and MK, too," Matcha added.
"Uh, my legs are broken," MK muttered.
"Hilarious. Go."
"Let's do this!" cheered Damien.
Up onto the court walked the four Dropouts, with Bowie, Noah, Zee, and Stephen coming up to oppose them. Mercutio blew a whistle, and the round began. Stephen moved around the court about as slowly and carelessly as could be expected, while Zee hunched over and darted his eyes around, his lanky neck extended.
"I'm open, I'm ready for anything, I got this, I can do it, I've got that dog in me, I'm the everything to your bagel, I'm over here moving like Patches O'houlihan, I can- oh, no!" Zee cried as a ball came at him from Damien. It nailed him in the side of the head. "Ow, man, for real?"
"Ha! Get outta here, Zee!" Damien pointed a thumb to the bleachers.
"Hahaha, yeah, you got me, man."
Noah actually managed to run out of the way of Holden tossing a ball at him. The egghead grabbed a ball, held it to block a ball from MK, then Kobe got him in the ribs.
Confessional - Noah
"I tried. Some improvement was inevitable in four years, right?"
End of confessional
Jill watched the game with falcon eyes, then Iko scooted in to sit beside her, cramping his way past Queen and Matcha. [2]
"'Scuse me. Hi."
"Hi, Iko."
"Uh, enjoying the game?"
"It's pretty entertaining to watch, but even more entertaining to participate in. You wanna play with me next round?"
"I'd love that."
Sitting on the other end of Jill, Athena prodded her and blurted, "Ooh! Ooh! Look what Bowie's doing!"
Bowie, almost equally sporty to Jill, had grabbed multiple balls in his arms, then broke into a spin, launching them around the court with much more suave expertise than Tyler in the original Dodgebrawl episode. Bowie's balls smacked Holden in the chin, knocked MK off her feet, and hit Damien in the head.
"Damn," uttered Tracy.
"Yeah, bitch," Bowie grinned. "Bowie just did that."
MK, with her voice raspy and low, grumbled to herself as she walked back to the bleachers, sounding like a woman in her 60s all the while.
"That was great and all, Athena, but Bowie just knocked out three of our teammates."
"Oh, right. Silly me," she giggled.
Confessional - Iko
"Sort of wish Jill and Athena weren't attached at the hip. Everywhere Jill goes, Athena goes. N-not that I noticed that from gawking. It'd be easier to talk to Jill if I felt more like it was just us. Plus, Scary Girl counts for three extra people, the way it feels like she's always watching you. She's like those haunted houses where the animatronic eyes follow you."
End of confessional
"Way to go, gay boy!" Fish cheered.
Bowie frowned at him.
"Damn, bro, that was some seriously fly shit right there," Kobe mentioned.
Bowie's frown left him. "Thank you, Kobe."
"I am gonna have to beat you, though. Sorry, g."
"You could give it your best shot."
Kobe leaned down to pick up a ball, everyone's eyes on him, Bowie, and Stephen, the last ones on the court. Bowie watched him with amusement while Stephen remained still. Kobe reared back and tossed the ball at Bowie, but he managed to catch it. Jayshawn burst into cheers, despite it not meaning much.
"Grads win round two!" Mercutio declared.
"Nice try, Kobe," Bowie said, waving at him with wiggling fingers.
Kobe gave him a smirk and a shrug before strutting back to his team, utterly unphased by the loss.
Confessional - Bowie
"Oh, he is cute. Tempting me like that in the middle of the court... how scandalous."
End of confessional
"Well played, Bowie, dude!" Zee congratulated him.
"Thank you, Zee. Anyone know whe-"
"I'm here, guys!" peeped Londyn. "I'm back!"
The model had run back from one of the exits out of the court, racing up to join her team.
"About time," Bowie muttered. "Tag in, Londyn. You're up."
"Okay! Join me, Fish?"
"It'd be my pleasure."
Fish took one of her hands, gently kissing it, causing her to giggle and blush, her face tattoos meekly covering up red. Meanwhile, Izzy leaped up on Noah's back, climbing up to sit on his shoulders as the bookworm heaved and grunted.
"I can't wait to see this next round go down!" she exclaimed. "Is your money on the t-bone steaks or the arthritis rangers?"
"Are we watching the same sporting event?"
Seated beside Noah, Cody's eyes were trapped on the sight of Londyn in her new outfit. She'd traded out her skirt for a pair of extra short, black athletic shorts, the sort that revealed a lot of thigh. She'd kept the same black and white striped top.
"Awesome outfit, Londyn!" Athena shouted from the other end of the court.
"Join us, Athena?" Jill offered, her and Iko heading to start the next round.
"Absolutely!"
Confessional - Iko
"Can't even separate them on the court for very long."
Confessional - Cody
"Holy hell, man. Londyn in those shorts? She's the kind of girl to get ten million likes on TikTok for taking a ten second video of herself blinking. I didn't know girls could look that thiqq in real life. Except Gwen."
End of confessional
"You tryna join us?" Fish asked Cody, noticing his gawking.
"Uh, yeah, I was waiting for someone to notice me. Heh."
"Good luck out there, Athena!" Caleb cheered.
She smiled wide and exaggeratedly waved to him. Moments later, with the cast assembled on the court, Mercutio blew his whistle and the third round began. Fish grabbed a ball and blocked balls coming at him, then tossed his, only for Queen to narrowly jump out of the way of it.
"Watch the hair!" she snapped.
Iko hunched up as a ball came sailing towards him from Jayshawn, but Jill was able to extend her arm, a ball in hand, saving him. Jayshawn's ball bounced off Jill's, then Athena managed to catch it, aiming and launching it.
"Thanks!" Iko gasped.
Londyn swerved aside, shooting out a ball in the midst of her leap. She managed to hit Queen. As Londyn moved, Cody was trapped in a daze, watching with her an intense, mystified attraction. He saw the way certain parts of her body jiggled as she moved on the court, and it took everything in him to keep his eyes away from her backside.
"Look the fuck out!" Jayshawn snapped, but it had been too late for Cody. A ball bashed him in the face, one soaring in from Jill.
Confessional - Cody
"Goddamn, that girl can throw!" He sighed. "Guess I had that coming."
End of confessional
"Get off the court with yo' scrawny ass," Jayshawn urged, then leaped and hurtled a ball into Athena's side. "You too, orangey, get gone!"
"You don't have to be so mean constantly!" Jill yelled.
"Yeah, man, why don't you cool your jets?" Iko added.
"Shut up, Asia-face!" Jayshawn growled, then grabbed balls that Londyn and Fish had been holding. He proceeded to let out an audible growl and toss the balls into Jill and Iko, eliminating them both. With round three's victory secured, Jayshawn let out an echoey "WHOO" and headed back to the bleachers.
"That's two consecutive wins for the Grads!"
"I thought you were supposed to be our secret weapon," MK complained as Jill and co. approached their side.
"He was on a warpath. I don't know. We won't let them win."
"I believe in you, Ji-" Iko tried to speak, but he was bulldozed by an excited Athena budging in, even shouting the same thing he was going to say.
"I believe in you, Jill! Let's give 'em everything we've got!"
Holden pressed his palm into his temples, scoffing. "Oh, my god, dude..."
For the next several hours, the challenge kept going. Fatigue started to pack onto the competitors, as no one had ever had to do dodgeball for more than an hour or so in high school. Even Chris McLean hadn't put his contestants through the amount of consistent dodgeball that Mercutio was demanding. Cody, Noah, and Izzy, the only three to actually compete in the original Dodgebrawl, found themselves more tired than they had in the Total Drama Island challenge-Noah most of all for his non-participation in that episode. This time, however, he worked just as hard as the rest of his teammates, seeing as the alternative would have meant the show's most ironic elimination.
Eventually, the Dropouts were onto their fourth consecutive win of the game. This round, whatever number it was, had come down to Cody and Kobe.
"Go, Kobe!" cheered Queen, more exhausted than enthusiastic. "Finish this already!"
Kobe reared back like a professional baseball player, sending the ball flying Cody's way with sonic force. Cody managed to limbo dodge the ball, taking a breath after accomplishing the dodge, only to get slammed in the hands and chest with another ball. He was sent to the other side of the court. Multiple contestants stood up to gain a closer view. The ball hadn't fallen, and a few seconds later, Cody lifted the ball, revealing that the consecutive victories had been reset to zero for each team once more.
"Dammit!" MK snapped, balling her fists.
"Yeah, good shit, Cody, good shit," Jayshawn said, clapping.
"Couldn't Cody have just let him win?" Zee asked, wiping sweat from under his green hat. "So that, you know, I could take a cat nap?"
"Too many fuckin' L's, Zee. Too many fuckin' L's. I'll be here all night if I gotta."
Following Cody singlehandedly thwarting the Dropouts from winning the challenge-yet, anyway-the teams kept tossing and dodging balls to their maximum capacity. Fatigue packed on, tiredness struck everyone in the cast, even contestants such as Jill and Bowie. Taking a deep breath, Damien peered out a window near the top of one wall of the court, and he saw that the sun was beginning to set. He wiped sweat away from the brim of his backwards snapback, grumbling, "Come on, man."
Noah threw a ball, nearly throwing himself over in the process. Slumped over, Londyn did nothing as another ball hit her in the head. Queen groaned, her arm in pain as she made a measly throw.
"Best pick up the pace, competitors," Mercutio ordered. "This game doesn't stop until five consecutive wins are achieved."
"But, bro, the sun is going down," Fish complained.
"'Bro'? I am nobody's 'bro'. I am your host, your leader, and this game does not end until five consecutive wins are achieved."
Cody tugged one of Fish's hoodie sleeves. "I'd listen to him, dude."
"Ay, man, hands off the drip."
"I'm tired," Londyn moaned.
"I can go all day," Izzy protested.
"All right, guys, listen," Bowie urged, gathering up his teammates. "Look, Jayshawn is right about the L's, okay? I don't wanna lose a fourth challenge. Every person we lose gives us a worse chance of winning the challenges to come, all right? We need to focus, and we need to pick up the slack. I believe in this team. I have to, because if we lose many more people, there won't be much of a team left to believe in."
"You right, blondie," Jayshawn agreed. "Come on, y'all, we can rest after we win. If we can keep wearin' down Jill, Caleb, Matcha, and Scary Girl, we've got a shot at winning this."
"You just leave the terrorist to me..." Izzy said with an evil smile, tapping her finger tips together like a James Bond villain.
There was silence for a moment after Izzy's cryptic statement, then Cody yelped and bounced in the air with Fish sticking his hands behind his back in a flash.
Confessional - Cody
"Can we vote off gropey-gills next time we lose?"
End of confessional
The game continued, and seemingly, Bowie and Jayshawn's quick pep talk with the Grads had solidified their resolve. The entire team's performance picked up, all except for sulking Stephen, his morale and demeanor unchanged at any point in the game. However, everyone else played, pushing energy out of their systems that they weren't certain that they had. Wins started to pile up, one after the other, until eventually, they reached a score of four to zero.
This next round began as all the others did. From the Dropouts side of the court walked Jill, Damien, Lauren, and MK. Approaching from the other end of the court came Jayshawn, Bowie, Izzy, and Cody. The contestants were streaked in sweat, exhausted, and ready for a victory on either side.
"Should we just take a dive and call it?" Damien whispered to Jill.
"No way," she replied, eyeing down the Grads.
"Begin!" shouted Mercutio.
The Grads went for balls, as did Jill and Damien. Lauren stayed still, creepy smile unaffected, with MK taking steps backward. Bowie spun around and knocked Damien on his ass with a ball to the face. Jayshawn roared and smacked Jill upside her head with another. Cody took a ball and rubbed it against his chest as fast as he could.
"Is he- is there something wrong with that guy?" MK asked.
Noah chuckled. "Seen how this ends."
Cody tossed his ball for MK, who was able to duck in time. What she wasn't prepared for was the ball turning around in midair and bopping her in the back.
"What the-"
Interrupting, Izzy let out a ferocious snarl, racing towards the center line of the court with Lauren, the last Dropout left, in her sights. Izzy soared into the air and smashed Lauren into the back of the court, taking her out with her ball.
"That's five consecutive wins!" Mercutio declared. "The Dropouts finally lose!"
The Grads burst into cheers. Fish hugged Londyn tight and spun around on the bleachers, unfortunately falling over and crushing Noah beneath their weight. Zee threw his arms up and cheered, and Stephen didn't move at all.
"Hey, man," Zee prodded him. "Hey, we finally won! We can know happiness again!"
"Don't touch me."
"That's cool, man- hey, congratulations from my personal space bubble to yours, homes!"
"Dropouts, I'll see you at the diploma ceremony in the auditorium in an hour. Don't be late."
Gathered up with her disappointed teammates, Jill buried her face in her palms. "No..."
Confessional - Jill
"They were counting on me today, and I let us all down. This feeling sure bites. I guess I got so used to winning, I forgot how much losing can sting."
Confessional - Holden
"Well, tonight, there's a good shot of getting rid of Jill, seeing as she was supposed to be our golden ticket and blew it. Then again, Scary Girl exists. That's a problem. Hey, maybe I'll get a happy surprise and Athena will go home."
Confessional - Iko
"I don't blame Jill. We all make mistakes. We're all worthy of second chances. Especially if you're really pretty, with beautiful, red hair, olive skin, and emerald-green eyes. Yeah, all that stuff together helps."
Confessional - Lauren
"Wanna hear a secret, one sister to another?" Lauren leaned in close, terrifying grin at the ready to whisper, "I have a craving for Damien's screams."
The camera turned and panned over to where Damien was minding his own business elsewhere in the library.
Confessional - Noah
"I think-" Noah stopped suddenly at the sound of Damien letting out a shrill scream at the other end of the library.
"Not my elbows! Not my elbows!" he wailed.
Lauren giggled. "You wanna see how to make me scream, Damien?"
The camera panned back to Noah, with the egghead's eyes expressing great concern and disturbance. "Yeah, I'll just, uh... just disregard what I just heard."
End of confessionals
Later into the evening, the entirety of the Dropouts stood on stage with Mercutio, Tracy, and Brook watching them from the audience seating. Jill's shame was apparent in her slouch. Meanwhile, Damien inched himself closer to the person at his left, Kobe, as Lauren clenched her palms and fingers on him like a cat making biscuits. Her psychotic face was tilted and pointed over at him, her eyes amorous and her lip between her teeth.
"'S wrong, bro?" Kobe asked him. "Why she touchin' you like that?"
Confessional - Damien
"I just want it to be known that, uhm, some things that, uh, in hindsight, I find not so groovy, have occurred. How they felt in the moment doesn't matter. It's the, uh, revelations after the fact that, uh..."
His eyes darting around, Damien got up from his seat and cut the confessional short.
End of confessional
"Enough speaking," Mercutio cut in. "Please and thank you. Now, it is time for the first ever Dropout diploma ceremony."
MK prodded Matcha and whispered, "The irony in that statement is palpable."
"When I call your name, you may catch your diploma and continue on into the fifth episode of the contest...

He exhaled with relief and made his way off the stage, "ow"ing several times as Lauren refused to unlatch her teeth from his ear at first.

MK gave him an incredulous glance. "Hey, maybe I kinda sorta didn't really bring much to the table today, but Scary Girl is a menace. Hand me my diploma already, Mercuti."
"Not so fast, Mary."
The next glance she gave was even more incredulous. "'Mary'?"
"Tonight, I have a surprise for the two of you. Tonight, instead of a regular vote-off sort of elimination, you two will be participating in the first ever Total Drama Million Dollar Academy elimination round!"
