Motivation.
Naruto's desire to prove to him that it wasn't a mistake to come to this world, and that the loss of his arm would be well worth the results, had been a powerful motivator for Naruto to actually achieve results. In less than 2 weeks, he had almost mastered using a Rasengan with only a single hand. It was why that everytime Naruto entered the room, that Jiraiya pretended to be asleep. He knew the second Naruto saw him awake, that would bring down his motivation.
"This is cruel."
"No, this is training. Naruto does his best when he's under stress... still..." Jiraiya was going to pretend to be asleep around Naruto until he had mastered the Rasengan, and then he would be awake. Naruto already knew he had been awake at one point, but by pretending to be asleep whenever Naruto was in the room, he gave off the illusion that he was still recovering his strength. In truth, Jiraiya was already back to the point that he could get up and around.
He just really didn't want to.
It was still super cold outside, and he was an older man. It took him more chakra to negate the cold, so staying indoors was just better for him. Naruto was young and resilient enough to adapt to the cold better than he could. This was proven by the fact that Naruto had been given clothes that matched the local residents, and he was still doing fine. He was actually growing more and more adjusted to the cold with each passing day.
It was an amazing training tool.
'That might be why Naruto is making so much progress with his chakra control.' Jiraiya thought, because the doctor wouldn't care if he talked to her.
It took constantly flowing chakra through the body to beat the cold, and Naruto had been doing that, which made it harder for him and his clone to do the Rasengan. Naruto had mastered the two handed Rasengan with the severe handicap that his chakra control was more chaotic due to having to split his focus. He was working towards a one handed Rasengan with that same handicap, and he was making progress. He didn't know it no doubt, but what Naruto was doing was adding an extra layer of challenge to his training.
As he got used to the cold, Naruto wouldn't need to channel chakra to his body to keep himself warm, and once the handicap was gone, Naruto's progress would skyrocket as it increased the progress he had already made. Once he no longer needed to use his chakra to negate the cold, he would master the one handed Rasengan easily.
If mastered it before he fully adapted to the cold, then his chakra control would be even greater for it.
-With Naruto-
"That's it!"
'I get it now! I've been using my chakra to stay warm while I've been training! That's why I can't master the one handed Rasengan!' Naruto looked at the extreme chakra burns on his palms from countless failed rasengans. He had made amazing progress, but he had hit a wall where he just wasn't making anymore progress.
"You can do it Naruto-kun!"
Naruto took a deep breath, and he stopped channeling his chakra through his body to stay warm, and quickly the warmer feeling in his body dropped as he started to feel more of the cold. Naruto took his training position, his palm facing upwards towards the sky. The sting of the cold wasn't anywhere near as bad as he thought it would be, his body having already adjusted to the cold better than he had expected.
Rotation, Power, and Containment.
The Rasengan appeared above Naruto's hand, complete and stable, and slightly larger than his normal Rasengan by an extremely smaller amount. The chakra in the Rasengan was even denser than it usually was, since his focus wasn't being split between keeping himself warm and making the Rasengan. It glowed brighter than it had glowed in days.
"RASENGAN!" Naruto slammed it into a tree.
The tree trunk was obliterated with ease as the Rasengan crashed through the tree, and then took down the 20 trees behind that tree, forming a large crater the entire way it traveled. Naruto grinned at the destruction he caused, a giddy smile over his face. The entire training area he was in was riddled with spiral craters, broken boulders, and felled trees aplenty. This was the biggest crater he had carved out with his technique though.
"WOOOOOO!"
Naruto grinned and sent a peace side to the girls watching him train, and the girl his age behind all of the others sent him a tiny peace sign right back. She was smiling at him, while the others cheered their hearts out for his success. Naruto gripped his hand into a fist, before slamming it against his palm.
"Alright! Time to go to the next step! I'm going to give Pervy Sage the surprise of his life! I'm not just going to master the Rasengan, I'm going to make it even better!" Naruto shouted with a grin. His teacher had showed him the technique, and it was about time that he showed his teacher what the technique would look like if he was able to take it to a higher level. Naruto sat down in the snow and started to think about how he would improve it.
Add something to it?
Change it's shape?
Make it denser?
Make it larger?
The girls who followed him around like he was a planet, and they were his moons, were cheering for him as he thought about how to continue.
-4 Days Later-
"Heheheheh... I still used Shadow Clones, but Pervy Sage is going to be so shocked."
Naruto had a Shadow Clone with him, because he couldn't use his new technique without a Shadow Clone, but the raw power the technique had was just so worth needing a clone again. Naruto was holding a much larger Rasengan above his hand, and surrounding that Rasengan were 3 floating smaller Rasengans that circled the larger Rasengan.
2 new techniques.
He increased the Rasengan AND made it denser, which formed the creation of his Big Ball Rasengan. Just increasing the size alone wasn't enough, so he made the Big Ball Rasengan even denser than the regular Rasengan, but he needed a clone to handle that much raw chakra without it becoming unstable. He had mastered the regular Rasengan to the point he could do it with one hand.
Then, he figured he would add more Rasengans.
Thus, he birthed the Planetary Rasengan, which was a Big Ball Rasengan surrounded by smaller Rasengan like moons. He used the clone to help him form the Big Ball Rasengan, and using his free hand, he formed the smaller Rasengans.
"Okay, hit me with it!"
"Gotcha!" Naruto charged towards his clone. "Planetary Rasengan!" Naruto slammed the attack into the chest of his clone.
The reaction was violent.
The ensuing chaos was wild as a crater several kilometers long was ripped out of the land, and rushed towards the side of a mountain, where it created a violently swirling tornado mark. All of the snow in the immediate area was blown off the ground, and Naruto himself was blown far back from where he had been standing by the shockwave the technique released. He was still skidding across the ground, before he used his chakra to slow himself by sticking to the ground.
The palm of his hand was steaming.
All of the skin from his palm had been stripped off by the technique he used, showing that the fearsome power behind it was a double edged sword.
"Huh!?"
"Huh?" Naruto was surprised when he saw the sleeping girl, had been woken up from his attack, but that wasn't a surprise at all. The entire area had been cleared of it's snow, and there was a crater in the side of the mountain in the distance. There was also a large scoop of land that had been carved out. She could sleep through Rasengan training, but there was no way she could sleep through what just happened.
"Wow..."
She witnessed the destruction.
"Wow indeed, I was not expecting you to come up with these results." Jiraiya was standing behind Naruto, having come the second he saw the massive attack from the village. He wanted to make sure that Naruto was okay, and didn't get caught up in his own training. He looked at the sheer volume of destruction, and he glanced down at Naruto's own damaged hand. A hand so damaged that even his healing power was only able to slowly heal it. His healing was reduced to a mere 10th of it's usual speed.
"You're better!"
"Yeah, and I can see you've been hard at work... that was a hell of a Rasengan you made." Jiraiya saw the spiral scar in the mountain. He hadn't expected Naruto to come up and improve the Rasengan like that.
"I had to use a clone to make it, but I did it! I mastered and improved the Rasengan... heheheheh." Naruto rubbed the underside of his nose with a grin. He hissed in pain though as his bleeding hand reminded him of the cost of using the newest technique.
"I'm forbidding you from using THAT new Rasengan, by the way... this amount of damage to yourself and your surroundings." Jiraiya looked at the way Naruto was damaged and how slow he was healing from it. That technique would be a death sentence for anyone hit by it, but if it missed, it would carve up the battlefield and take out Naruto's allies too. It was an extremely powerful, but unreliable, technique that needed to only be used in very specific situations where the possibility of harm was close to zero.
Once Naruto could use it without hurting himself was also a condition.
"Oh come on!"
"Don't 'oh come on' me brat. You aren't ready for this technique... still, you've done a good job creating it." Jiraiya had never in his life thought of improving the Rasengan. It was a finishing move even in it's normal form, with very few people capable of surviving getting hit by it. The fact that Naruto had found a way to improve the Rasengan this much was a testament to his creativity. '... maybe if it's Naruto... maybe he can do what his father and Kakashi failed to do... and what I failed to do.' Jiraiya thought.
Only 4 people knew the Rasengan.
3 of them had tried and failed to improve it by adding an element to it, but it was possible that Naruto would be the first among them with the capability of adding something entirely new. Still, Naruto didn't know what his elemental affinity was, and he had no experience with chakra nature change.
Jiraiya smiled.
'He's so much like Kushina though, I have no doubt that he has her Wind style. I think Minato could also use the wind release... still... in just over 2 weeks, his Rasengan had come this far.' Jiraiya rubbed the top of Naruto's head. Naruto might be the one to add an element to the Rasengan, once he had mastered an element. 'Also... he isn't using his chakra to stay warm anymore.' Jiraiya noticed that despite his light clothing, Naruto seemed very comfortable with the cold now.
At least, partially adapted to it.
'Maybe staying here to train will be good for him. He seems... happier here. His smile seems way more genuine than I've ever seen it in Konoha... maybe he can make friends with some of the kids his age.' Jiraiya looked at the girl who was watching Naruto train, who had noticed it was morning and was running off to her home. From what he had heard, Naruto was well liked by the residents of the village, was helping them out, and was just in general a very popular guy. This was almost a perfect place for him to train.
It was secluded, with large areas of land that were unused for anything, and Naruto would have plenty of positive influences being surrounded by people who actually wanted him to succeed in his goals.
Also, since there was a chance that they couldn't go home ever again, it might be a good idea to get Naruto comfortable with the idea of staying in this world, finding a place he loved would help. Having a place to call home would soften the blow when it came time to be honest with Naruto. Still, he didn't want to give up hope just yet.
"Okay brat, I've got some stuff I need to take care of. While I'm gone, I want you to work on your Taijutsu. Tie an arm behind your back when you spar with them." Jiraiya gave Naruto a handicap. The best way that Naruto learned was through stress it would seem. There would be no better way to bring Naruto's skills in hand to hand up, than to force him to fight himself with a handicap. He had always sparred with Naruto to teach him, but this method might be more effective.
"You're going?" Naruto asked.
"Yeah, I'm going to investigate this world a bit. I'll be back in... 6 months to a year, give or take." Jiraiya wanted to investigate to see if anyone in this world had knowledge on travel to other worlds. With his skills, a year was the most he would need to find out the answers he needed to know.
"Aren't you suppose to be training me?"
"I am training you. I told you what I wanted you to do, and now it's your job to do it. I'm not going to hold your hand."
"Heh." Naruto grinned when Jiraiya said that. "Right... and I guess since we'll be here for 8 years, I can spend a year by myself working on Taijutsu... yeah." Naruto had the Rasengan to the point he could use it with one hand. If he got his taijutsu to the point he could keep up with Jonin, then he would already be a major threat to the enemies who were after him. "Can't I come with you though?" Naruto asked.
"No way, you'll cramp my information gathering style-"
I want you to be happy here, and call this place your home, in case we can't go home.
"-and I'm leaving you to pay the medical bills." Jiraiya gave his excuse.
"You're awake, so pay for your bills yourself Pervy Asshole!" Naruto kicked Jiraiya in the shin for leaving him with the bills on purpose. Naruto stormed off in a huff.
'... I should just be honest... but I don't want to take his hope away. I'll wait, I'll wait until I'm absolutely sure.' Jiraiya thought to himself with a nod. He was putting it off until there was no choice, but if there was a way back home, then he wouldn't have to break Naruto's spirit with the bad news.
That was the best outcome.
