Chapter 2
(Annabeth pov)
Lunch rolled around and I sat down with Julinn and her friends at their table. Their names were Maya, Camilla, and Karissa.
"There's my boyfriend Toby," Julinn gestured to another table, where a bunch of boys were sitting. "He and his friends are trying out for the swim team this afternoon. Hey, you should come! Coach Meer is really nice, he sets out snacks for the swimmers as an after-tryout party and he usually buys too much so basically everyone gets food."
I laughed. Percy was going to try out for the swim team, and with that appetite of his, he could probably eat the whole table all by himself. Then I blushed, remembering that me and Percy couldn't show affection to one another.
"Sure, I'll come," I said without a thought, my traitorous heart causing my brain to think of Percy's wonderful, chiseled abs and how hot they looked when he came out of the water, soaking wet then dry with a single thought...
"Cool!"
(Percy pov)
"Hey, man, you should try out for the swim team," Toby said. "I'm planning to try for varsity, but you could always do JV if you want."
"No thanks, I'll do varsity," I replied, thinking about my powers as a Son of Poseidon. Of course, I didn't need to use them since water naturally empowered me and increased my strength, speed, and endurance.
"Good on you, man. Setting your sights high. Hey, my girlfriend Julinn's gonna be there to cheer me on. She'll probably bring some friends of hers too. Maybe I can set you up with a hot chick or two?"
"No, thanks, I have a g-" Percy stumbled over his words as he remembered their relationship had to be secret. "Erm, not interested. I'm kinda in my no-dating phase, ifyouknowwhaddimean."
"Suit yourself, bro," Ryan interjected, "but I sure wouldn't mind going out with a hot girl."
"You're so perverted," Jake teased, elbowing Ryan playfully.
-five hours later-
"Alright kiddos! We'll do varsity tryouts first, a 15-minute break, and then JV tryouts! Now varsity wannabes, line up at the edge of the pool! First test is endurance, starting in three, two, one, go!"
Coach Meer yelled out rapid fire instructions that Percy could barely comprehend before he plunged into the water, feeling a burst of strength invigorate him. He caught a flash of curly golden hair before he did, though, and hope filled him to the brim...but no, that couldn't be. Annabeth couldn't be here, she wasn't supposed to...
Percy swam a perfect freestyle mindlessly around and around the pool, all the while thinking about Annabeth, his mind tantalized by the mere image of her face. Those sparkling silver eyes, pools of swirling mercury that he could drown in...
He was suddenly yanked out of the pool by a pair of hairy arms and fell hard on his back, spluttering not from the lack of air or exertion but utter shock.
"Kid, are you okay? You were in there fifteen minutes longer than everyone else!" Coach Meer exclaimed, helping him stand up.
"I was?" he replied a little stupidly, water dripping down his face.
"Yeah, no duh! Speed next, line up!" Coach Meer yelled, shoving him towards where everyone else was standing.
"Try hard," Jake snickered in Percy's ear as they lined up.
(Annabeth pov)
Oh gods, my stupid Seaweed Brain...Stupid, oblivious, annoying, sweet, caring, hot, and sexy...I quickly found myself switching from describing the infuriating things about him to qualities that made me want to grab him and kiss him...
Percy placed first in all the tryout challenges, earning him the title of captain. The fifteen minute break was called and the people watching came down to mingle with everyone else.
"You did amazing, Toby!" Julinn exclaimed, giving her boyfriend a peck on the lips, getting pool water on her blouse. She didn't seem to mind, though.
I felt myself drifting closer and closer to Percy despite how much I hated myself for it.
"Annabeth?" he asked.
"Percy," I deadpanned.
We moved farther away from the rest of the crowd, talking in hushed tones.
"Why are you here?"
"I came with my friend Julinn to watch tryouts since her boyfriend is here."
"Wait, Julinn's dating my friend Toby?"
In the corner of my eye, I saw Julinn walking over. In a moment of desperation, I shoved Percy hard into the pool.
"Idiot," I muttered as Julinn came jogging up to me.
"What the hell did that guy do to you?" she asked.
I shrugged. "He's infuriating."
Toby walked up. "Hey, that guy's my friend!"
I rolled my eyes. "I see you have good taste in girls but not guys, then."
Toby looked massively offended, but Coach Meer announced the JV tryouts and we had to go back to the bleachers.
"You really hate him, don't you?" Julinn said, noticing the scowl on my face that was for a completely different reason (not being able to kiss Percy).
"Oh. Oh, yeah," I said, deciding to play along.
Julinn scoffed. "Well, he probably did something to deserve it. Toby can be his friend all he wants, but if he treats you badly then I don't like him."
I grinned. Julinn was a pretty loyal friend, even when I had only known her for a day.
-at sally's house after school-
"You pushed me into the pool!" Percy exclaimed as soon as we walked into the house.
"We had to keep it a secret! We don't want to lose the bet, after all!" I replied.
"Well, I feel like I deserve some sort of compensation."
I kissed him hard and he melted into my touch, but I pulled away after a few seconds. "There, that's your compensation."
"Well, now I want more..."
The next morning, news spread like wildfire when they realized some random girl had pushed the new swim captain into the pool...What happens next?
