Author's Note: Hey guys I'm back again with a new chapter. Just letting you know my co-writer, The Final Shinobi, has dropped out due to real life, so it's just me writing with Attlon as editor. But I still plan to keep this story going without fail and will try to keep updating once a month. So don't worry about that.

Also have some Cover Art coming in soon, so that's something to look forward to.

Hope you enjoy the chapter, a bit more combat involved this time around.

Chapter 5 - Creeping Fear

"Shocking News out of Republic City. Early this morning notorious crime boss, Lightning Bolt Zolt of the Triple Threat Triads, along with all of his lieutenants were found tied up directly outside of Republic City Police Headquarters. The collection of gangsters were found with a small note signed by the mysterious leader of the Equalists, Amon, promising that the infamous criminal organization will no longer be a problem for the citizenry.

More shocking however, according to several eyewitnesses, in the process of capturing these criminals, Amon demonstrated the ability to permanently strip a bender's bending away.

While these claims have yet to be confirmed, the news has sent shockwaves throughout Republic City with many journalists waiting outside Police Headquarters for confirmation from Chief Lin Beifong.

Though no statement has been given, tensions have risen considerably throughout the city, as everyone waits with baited breath for possible confirmation of this earth shattering revelation."

-Click-

A brief silence echoed just outside of a medium sized interrogation room after the radio had been clicked one responsible, a grizzled looking middle aged but still athletic looking woman with narrow green eyes, short gray hair and a noticeable twin lash like scar under her left eye, which coupled with the black police metal uniform she wore, gave her quite the air of authority.

This was Lin Beiforng, Police Chief, Master Earth/Metalbender, and a woman whose default expression was angry scowling, which is how she was currently wearing at this moment.

"That broadcast is what's been all over the radio since early this morning and I've had reporters all but kicking down my door since seven o'clock. Demanding answers as to whether or not what they heard is the truth."

Her anger shook the room as she focused her wrath on the three people in the room with her. Those being a visibly shaken Avatar Korra and a composed but concerned Tenzin.

"By all accounts I should be celebrating." Lin growled as she pointed to the door leading into the interrogation room. "One of the biggest gangs in the entire city literally gift wrapped at my doorstep. Only issue is it was done by a bunch of local vigilantes, one of whom turns out to potentially have a game changing ability I thought only the Avatar had."

A quick glance in the room revealed Lightning Bolt Zolt, currently handcuffed and seated at a small table, with a lamp pointed in his face, looking both irritated yet also ever so nervous at the same time.

"Zolt's been uncooperative since he was brought in and any testimony he does give I trust about as much as any scumbag's. And if I don't get some kind of definitive confirmation soon, people will start to panic."

Lin's palm slammed on her tabletop, shaking papers and causing Korra to lean back in her seat in a desperate attempt to put distance between the two.

"Since you were at the rally last night, you can help confirm what happened and what Zolt's usual brand of garbage until his overpriced lawyer shows up. Though, that's assuming you can keep your attitude in check."

That jab made the young Avatar twitch, feeling like she was being talked down to like a child. "Hey, I know we didn't have the best first impression, but I'm perfectly capable of keeping my head together."

"Really?" Lin quickly pulled out several photographs depicting the Roku District after her arrival. "Cause you have a tendency to fly off the handle when the Triple Threats are involved. And I'm fairly sure Tenzin doesn't want to foot another bill because you decided to lose your temper."

The progressive needling was starting to get under Korra's skin as she looked about ready to jump out of her seat and get into a shouting match with Lin, only for Tenzin to quickly hold her down with one hand on her shoulder and a firm look on his face at the Chief.

"Lin, there's no reason for us not to be civil right now. Korra has shown a consistent level of self control since she arrived here and I'm confident there won't be any incidents."

Tenzin's faith left Korra beaming at her mentor, while Lin simply scoffed at the display. "Fine, just be ready to put your money where your mouth is if she does act out."

Lin approached the door to the interrogation room and opened it, Korra and Tenzin following in behind. Zolt looking up from the table to glare at Lin, before his eyes shifted to Korra.

"Really giving me the VIP treatment here Chief. Got me a visit from the Avatar and the past Avatar's kid. Boy, don't I feel lucky."

Lin merely sneered at the gangster as she took a seat opposite him. "Cut the attitude Zolt, I'm just looking for the facts on what happened and since your word is worth less than sewer water, I had to bring in another witness to get the facts straight."

Zolt looked at the trio confused, more so Korra and Tenzin. "Other witness, wait a minute…" The Gang Leader's face seemed to quickly go red with anger as he jumped from his seat, the table shaking, with Lin looking ready to attack. "Are you telling me you were there when it happened, Avatar? Why the heck didn't you jump in sooner? I'd still have my bending if you'd done something!"

Korra, being quickly reminded that the once fearsome gangster was now without his firepower, looked back at him with disgust. "Why should I? I had no idea what Amon was planning to do and even if I did know he could take away your bending, I'm honestly glad he did."

Her response earned a look of shock from Tenzin and irritation from Lin, yet Zolt looked almost positively rabid.

"You cocky little brat. You got any idea who I am?"

Korra however, merely looked at the gangster almost smugly. "Yeah, a criminal who's finally getting a taste of his own medicine for a change. After all the people you hurt and killed over the years, losing your bending is the least you deserve."

Zolt looked ready to say something, only for Lin to stomp her foot, causing the entire room to echo loudly. "Enough, both of you. Tenzin, keep the Avatar under control or else I'll handle this interrogation the old fashioned way."

Korra's bravado quickly dropped, feeling Tenzin's displeasement and backed off, as Lin gestured Zolt to return to his seat.

"Well, outburst aside I suppose this does at least confirm Amon did in fact take away your bending, is that right Zolt?"

The crime boss continued to sneer, glaring angrily at the floor, though now looking more like a wounded animal. Yet, knowing that Korra could easily refute anything he said, he had no reason to lie. "...Yeah, bastard took it, right on stage in front of his gaggle of sycophants."

Lin quickly started writing down the testimony. "And you haven't been able to bend since? This wasn't just another form of Chi-Blocking?"

"Lady, if I could bend, you think I wouldn't have tried already?" Zolt spoke quietly, though again, those in the room could hear the vulnerability in his voice.

Satisfied, Lin jotted the information down. "Alright, tell me exactly what happened prior to losing your bending. Did Amon do anything of note or significance?"

"You mean besides kidnapping me and parading me around on stage like a damn circus act?"

From her position, Korra swore she saw a ghost of a smile on Lin's face, likely enjoying the visual of the proud gangster made a spectacle of.

"Bastard offered to let me go, after giving some self satisfying speech. Said if I turned myself in he'd leave me alone. Course I refused and turned to burn him up nice and easy."

The smug way he spoke that last part made Korra bristle, stunned even now he was still openly bragging about choosing violence over simply atoning for his crimes. It was a sentiment shared by Lin and Tenzin, the latter of whom looked ready to burst a blood vessel.

"Guy was a lot more slippery than I gave him credit for, dodged every blast I threw at him, till I decided to use some lightning."

Lin stopped mid stroke, "You're saying you used Lightning-Bending against Amon?"

Zolt nodded. "Yeah, it is kind of my trademark after all."

Lin and Tenzin turned to Korra, who nodded. "It's true, it was the last thing he tried right before Amon finally got to him."

"And then I'm guessing he dodged it as well?" Lin asked offhandedly, as if expecting the answer, only to be surprised when Zolt's expression turned a few degrees paler.

"He didn't dodge it, he blocked it…with his hand!"

Silence hung in the interrogation room for a minute, primarily from Tenzin and Lin, both looking baffled by the idea, Korra herself still reeling somewhat from the sight herself even though she'd seen it with her own eyes.

This claim actually seemed to shake Lin's previous unflappable demeanor, actually causing her to jump from her seat and slam her hands on the table, making the criminal jump. "You must think I'm an idiot, Zolt. You don't block lightning, any firebender worth a damn knows that's impossible unless they have a death wish."

"Lady I ain't got a reason to lie about this." Zolt managed to find some of his courage. "And I know what I saw….even if I still don't believe it. Bastard's arm should've been charcoal, yet he didn't even flinch."

Again, both Lin and Tenzin looked to Korra for confirmation, and to their shock she silently nodded.

"This…is unprecedented." Tenzin spoke quietly. "The last time someone even attempted such a stunt was Fire Lord Zuko and he only survived thanks to my mother's intervention."

"And he got a nice permanent reminder for his trouble." Lin finished Tenzin's recount, having similarly heard the story and even seen the fist sized scar on the Fire Lord's chest. "And we're supposed to believe Amon not only survived it, but didn't even suffer a wound?"

Zolt sneered and leaned back in his chair, the prior tension he felt from Lin dissipating, somewhat relishing seeing the stern police woman actually shaken a little. "Hey, the Avatar herself confirmed it, and she's got way less reason to lie than I do."

With a sigh, Lin sat back down and added this new information to her notes, though with less vigor than she had started with, before looking back up at Zolt.

"And after that, anything else we should know about?"

Zolt shrugged a little at that. "Once he stopped my lightning, couldn't think straight and he rushed me. Way faster than I've ever seen anyone move, then he held me up with one hand." Zolt's hand reflexively went to his throat, a faint mark visible upon it. "Was like being held by a metal clamp, and the freak was holding me up like I was a freaking baby."

The further his description of events went, the more concern appeared on Tenzin's face and the further Lin's brow creased with irritation.

"Energybending was one thing, but this is sounding more and more serious than I originally believed." Tenzin spoke, looking more than a little shaken. "Korra, you told me last night Amon confronted you before you escaped from the rally. Did he display any kind of similar ability then?"

"You mean beside walking off a four story drop and then punching his way through a wall I made with earthbending." Korra's aloof tone was an attempt to lighten the mood, though it proved to have little effect, Tenzin's eyes widening at the information.

"So we've potentially got a vigilante leader running around who not only has Energybending on his side but is also apparently some kind of superhuman." Lin's grip on her pencil threatened to break it as she angrily tapped her foot, trying to vent some of the aggravation growing inside of her. "And that's everything that happened? Or did Amon do something else as a showstopper?"

Zolt shook his head, "Outside of stealing mine and my guys bending, that's it. Anything after that, I couldn't tell you."

With a sigh Lin put down her pencil, angrily pinching the bridge of her forehead for a moment before standing up and looking back at Tenzin and Korra. "Seems I was right to call you in and surprise, surprise, little Miss Avatar actually managed to keep a cool head. Shame it's left me with a serious mess to deal with now."

"Indeed, The Council we need to be informed of this matter as well. Though, I'm more concerned about how the public will react." Tenzin could already imagine the possible fall out. More Nonbenders flocking to the Equalists to join their cause, emboldened by the confirmation of Amon's unnatural abilities, and the possible response from those opposed to his cause.

"Maybe it won't be as bad as we think."

All eyes quickly snapped to Korra, currently rubbing her arm awkwardly in response to the attention being given.

"I mean, yeah it's scary that Amon can do all of this, but he said he only wants to help Republic City and if he's only going after criminals isn't that a good thing?"

She got her answer in a loud and deliberate scoff from Lin, who callously smirked at her comment as she stood up. "Sure, let's just listen to a rogue vigilante running around the city because he has noble intentions. After all, who's to say he won't be the first underground cult leader in charge of power hungry criminals in history to keep to his word."

The sarcasm was laced so thick into her words, she might as well have slapped Korra in the face with them. And Korra was left absolutely livid.

"Well maybe if you were actually good at your job, he wouldn't need to do it for you."

Lin practically sucked in her own lips trying to hold in the clear outburst she wanted to let loose, face turning crimson from the growing anger, while Zolt actually looked at the Avatar with a mixture of shock and mild respect.

However, as it looked like Mt. Lin was about to erupt, Tenzin quickly grabbed Korra by the shoulders and started pushing her towards the door.

"Pardon me Lin, but I need to have a word with Korra. I'm sure you can finish things up here, please feel free to call us back at the island if you need any further assistance."

Against Korra's protests, The Air Master quickly pushed her out the door, him following quickly behind using his Airbending to shut it behind them, leaving a still fuming Lin to stomp her foot angrily, actually denting the metal floor.

Immediately her head snapped to Zolt, who now looked ready to wet himself, not happy being left with an all but rabid Police Chief.

Shockingly however, Lin took another long, loud and deep breath before returning to her chair and looking at Zolt with an unnervingly calm face, actually making the mobster sweat a little, unsure what was gonna happen.

"So…" Zolt slowly spoke, carefully testing out his words. "I told you all I know, now what?"

Lin merely leaned back into her seat, pausing for a moment to let her anger cool a bit more. "Well that all depends on you Zolt. True we didn't detain you personally, but thanks to all the outstanding warrants against you and your men, any further procedure would just be a formality."

"Heh, you seriously think I'm gonna let you keep me locked up?" Zolt quickly found some of his courage under the threat of permanent imprisonment. "I still got connections and plenty of money to get any kind of case against me thrown out. You wait, me and my boys will be on the street in a week."

"And in the morgue by the end of the next day probably."

Another bout of silence hung in the air, Zolt now sweating more, and wishing there was someone else in the room with them. "...You threatening me chief?"

Lin again simply shrugged her shoulders, still keeping that eerie calm. "Not me. You're right, your lawyers probably could probably get the case dropped on some technicality, but tell me something, how do you imagine the other Gangs will react when word gets out you and your cronies can't bend anymore?"

Immediately Zolt started to pale as the weight of that reality started to properly set in, which only made Lin smirk ever so slightly.

"You Triple Threats have been the biggest game in town for years, but now without your bending, you're just sitting ducks for the next group to take your throne." Smirking further Lin leaned back further in her chair. "Who do you think it'll be that takes the first swing? The Red Monsoons, The Agni Kais? Nah, I'm pretty sure it'll be the Creeping Crystals, they've been getting pretty bold as of late."

Zolt's face only grew paler and paler, sweat pouring down his face as the mental image of him and his men being relentlessly hunted down by the other gangs, all without any means to defend themselves. And it wasn't like their safe houses were exactly hidden. Their reputation had been the main thing keeping the others away, but now? They'd be lucky to make it back to their hideout after being released, assuming it wasn't already crawlin with Crystals or Kais.

Quickly the mob boss felt a cold realization wash over him, as he almost fell limp in his chair, a look of defeat evident on his face.

"What do you want?"

Dropping her smirk, Lin sat back up and looked Zolt square in the eye. "Simple enough, you disclose the names of all your remaining members, along with all affiliated locations and businesses. In exchange I'll see to it you spend the rest of your life in a minimum security prison outside of Republic City and out of reach from your competitors."

The terms made Zolt flinch as it was effectively going to be the end of his entire organization. What Lin was asking for would definitively end the Triple Threats for good. The thought made Zolt sneer angrily, picturing Amon's masked face looking down on him, a satisfied smile pictured from behind the mask.

"Guess the bastard got his wish after all."

-Transition: Outside Interrogation Room-

"Tenzin, what gives?" Korra angrily shouted, shaking herself free of her mentor's grasp, looking at him with frustration, which he met with equal, if better controlled irritation.

"We agreed you would remain calm in there Korra, not insult Lin of all people to her face and make things more complicated."

"But you heard what she said. She's writing off Amon like he's just as bad as Zolt when he just made the city a lot safer."

"On some level you're not wrong. Lin's always had a rigid adherence to the law, but antagonizing her like that isn't helping your case." Tenzin merely sighed as he watched Korra angrily pace in the room, trying to vent her anger over the situation. "And arguing on Amon's behalf certainly isn't going to win you any favors either."

"Are you saying you agree with her? Just write them off and that's it?" Korra's tone reminded Tenzin of when she'd broached the same question before, though now with less righteous anger and more apprehension.

"I'm surprised how strongly you feel about this Korra, especially given what almost happened to Bolin."

Though Korra hadn't given all the details on what had happened at the Rally after she returned to Air Temple Island, she did give enough broad strokes to give Tenzin a sufficient picture. More specifically how Bolin had nearly suffered the same fate as Zolt, only saved by a surprising display of mercy from Amon.

"Believe me, after what he did to Zolt, I was about ready to write him off as another psycho like Fire Lord Ozai." Korra admitted, glancing out a nearby window back at Republic City. "But, I heard what he said to the crowd, how bending isn't evil, only the people who abuse it. He sounded genuine and…I believed him, or maybe I wanted to believe him."

Sighing in exasperation, Korra leaned against the nearby wall, looking at the floor, trying to gather her thoughts. "Maybe I'm wrong, I don't know, but I want to believe he's sincere and not the nutcase Old Lady Ironside over there is writing him off as."

A choked gasp followed at the surprise nickname she borrowed from Naruto, before feeling Tenzin's palm gently on her shoulder.

"Korra, I believe you. And I'm sure that Amon believes he'll only use his power on those that misuse theirs. But too many people have started out like that before; convinced that they are right and that they will do what no others before them have been capable of with power or opportunity they've been given."

Many figures from history flashed through the aged master's mind, several of whom just from relatively recent events.

"Sadly, too many times have people like that stepped off the beaten path they set out for themselves and compromised those same beliefs. And even if Amon truly aims to stand by his goals, from what you told us, many of the Non-Benders that attended that rally weren't too happy with the mercy he showed Bolin. Between these gifts he has that makes him a threat to Benders and followers who already have shown dissenting opinions with what he wants…I feel like we're on course towards a disaster we can't quite anticipate."

Korra's hands grew tight as she felt herself hitting a proverbial wall. On the one hand, she truly wanted to give the Equalists at least a chance. Even if their methods weren't exactly conventional, they were also effective and helpful. On the other hand, the kind of power Amon wielded was not only completely alien but just as easy to be abused as the bending he chose to stand against. And even if he personally didn't become a tyrant, how long before one of his supporters did.

"What am I supposed to do Tenzin?" Korra asked almost pleadingly, wishing for a simple solution but knowing none would come. A fear that was confirmed by the uncertain look on Tenzin's face.

"I'm afraid I can't answer that, Korra. This situation we find ourselves in isn't one we can simply resolve without consequences. We'll need to be cautious how we act from here on out."

His words brought her little comfort as Korra felt her gaze drop back to the floor, mind swirling with thoughts, ideas and questions, the weight of them all threatening to make her brain burn itself out.

Thankfully the sound of a door opening set Korra's mind back on course, the duo greeted by Lin leading a still handcuffed Zolt out of the Interrogation Room, Lin's look of satisfaction quickly morphing back into her standard irritated one when she spotted Korra.

"I trust everything went well Lin?" Tenzin quickly spoke up, trying to keep another potential fight from breaking out between the two abrasive women. And Lin, thankfully, decided to let cooler heads prevail for a change.

"Yes, outburst aside, looks like the Triple Threat's reign is at an end. Not how I wanted it to go down, but I can't really argue with the results."

Yanking Zolt by his arm, she led the defeated crime boss away, yet couldn't pass up the chance to give Korra the stink eye as they headed out of the room.

However, before they left Zolt pulled back enough to stop Lin's pace for a moment. "Hey, Avatar!"

"What?" Korra asked, confused, not especially in the mood to deal with Zolt right now.

"Wouldn't get too comfortable if I were you. Only a matter of time before Amon comes after you too."

That comment made Korra's blood boil and had her take a step towards the now former crime boss. "Last time I checked, I wasn't a scumbag who exploits people."

Zolt however, smirked, even as Lin started to pull him away. "You're the Avatar kid. The only one in this city who could stop him. How long do you think before the Council or the Chief here ask you to take him down? You really think he's just going to wait for you to make the first move?"

His point actually made Korra pause, and it quickly dawned on her….he was right.

"If I was you Avatar, I'd start sleeping with one eye open. Only a matter of time before Amon finally decides you're too much of a risk to ignore."

"Put a sock in it, Zolt." Lin shouted angrily, finally dragging the criminal off his feet and out of the room, yet a simple look at Korra's face showed the damage had been done.

Tenzin quickly approached Korra, trying to put himself between the now removed criminal and the Avatar. However, he quickly felt his heart sink as he saw Korra's shaken expression and the visible nervous twitch of her hands.

"Well, it would seem we aren't needed here anymore." Tenzin spoke, gently. "We should return to the Temple. You still have quite a bit of training for today after all."

Korra's expression stirred as she looked at Tenzin, eyes still nervous but also relieved for the distraction as she nodded.

"Right, training. Still gotta get Airbending down after all...heh." Korra's chuckle did little ease Tenzin's concerns as they slowly exited the room, a faint shadow of fear hanging over Korra as they finally left the station.

-Transition: Air Temple Island (Night)-

Quiet sounded through the Air Temple as night had fallen, the Avatar currently resting in her room, switching out her usual attire for a simple white tank top and light blue pants, a peaceful expression on her face, lulled to sleep by the calm sound of the ocean outside.

Yet, even as she slept, her body shook under the covers, a sense of unease growing inside of her, until she awoke, blue eyes wide and nervous, eyes darting rapidly around her room for some foreign presence.

Brushing some of her unbound hair out of her eyes, she pulled back the covers and climbed out of her bed, and standing up, guard raised as she slowly looked around more carefully, walking towards the door to her room as she seemingly saw a shadow or perhaps trick of the moonlight.

Halting, she pulled the door open, fist ready to unleash a blast of fire only to find nothing. Pushing her head out and turning to both sides, again she found nothing of note and sighed with relief, pulling back in and closing the door.

Quietly she started to walk back to her bed, only for a hand to erupt from the wall to her right side, latching onto her arm.

With a scream, Korra quickly struck the offending limb, yet its grip held firm, pulling her closer towards the wall, another arm bursting through to greet her.

Terrified, Korra jumped high and kicked out with both her feet, letting off a burst of fire that finally broke the iron grip of her attacker, while sending her tumbling to the opposite wall. The young avatar shook off the shock and light pain from the collision, and attempted to get up, only for a loud boom and a cloud of dust to stop her cold.

Standing in a massive hole in the wall, eyes glowing a fierce red, stood Amon.

"Avatar Korra, I believe it's time we picked up where we left off."

Korra quickly tried to get to her feet and attempted to stomp the ground to unleash a wave of earth, only for Amon to close the distance in an instant, hand around her throat, body pinned against the wall, her feet dangling above the ground.

Like Zolt before her, Korra attempted to fight back swinging her arms and legs to attempt some attack, but quickly found her options non existent. Her breathing was too shallow for Firebending, her feet weren't connected to the ground for Earthbending and there was no water in sight.

Amon had her trapped.

Desperately, she struck at the offending hand trying to break his grip, her panicked eyes staring into the seemingly empty void of his mask, not even a hint of humanity visible.

"I do apologize Avatar, but I'm afraid you're too much of a liability." Amon's free hand extended towards Korra's forehead, before he forced her to her knees, his other hand freeing her neck and moving to just above her chest, just like with Zolt.

Korra, finally able to breath again, managed out a gag and a cough, trying to form any kind of word. "Pl…Pleas…don't!"

Amon remained unmoved as Korra felt the pressure from his hands increase, and his eyes started to glow.

"This is for the best Avatar. I hope you can understand that."

As the light grew brighter, Korra felt the creeping influence rush throughout her entire body and in the back behind Amon she saw the darkness only grow larger, like a twisted shadow.

"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"

-Transition-

"NO!" Korra shouted loudly as she jerked forward in her bed, breathing ragged and heavy, sweat dripping from her forehead, pulse hammering against her chest.

Again, she found herself in her bed, and eyes rapidly blinking as she looked around for Amon, only to be greeted by no Equalist Leader, no holes in her wall, and no signs of a struggle.

"A dream…, it was just a dream." Korra quickly told herself, letting her heart rate slowly drop to a more manageable level as she wiped away the sweat on her forehead.

As she slowly calmed down, a familiar furry pressure was felt on her right arm, finding Naga looking at her with concern, panting heavily as she looked at her master. Smiling at her companion, Korra lightly petted the massive beast, leaning back against the headboard of her bed.

"Looks like what that creep Zolt said really shook me up huh Naga?"

The Polar Bear Dog simply tilted her head confused, before placing her head on Korra's lap to offer additional comfort, which the still shaken Avatar took happily. "Nice to know you're around if I need someone to keep me company at night. Though, hopefully this doesn't become a regular occurrence."

Naga offered another light moan, as Korra laid back down on her pillow, and tried to go to sleep, even as the image of Amon's glowing red eyes and the feel of his hand on her neck continued to linger as her mind finally drifted into darkness once again.

-Transition: Air Temple Island (Morning)

"Has anyone seen Korra this morning?" Tenzin asked, walking into the dining room, finding Penma and their children eating, but no Avatar. "It's unusual for her not to join us in the morning."

"I think I saw her practicing her forms outside." Ikki piped up before taking a bite of her food.

"It was a bit weird, it usually takes her an hour to wake up in the morning." Jinora added, having recalled Korra's traditional moaning about the early morning.

Meelo looked like he wanted to chime in, but his mouth was full and a glare from Pema quickly made him stop mid attempt, leaving Tenzin to mull over this information without input.

"Her dedication is certainly admirable, but she should still make time for meals at least. I'll go see if I can convince her to join us." Tenzin quickly walked out of the room towards the training grounds, his ears greeted by some music playing that made him wince a little. "How on earth can anyone concentrate with that noise playing in the background."

Finally outside he spotted Korra, currently in her Airbending stance, gliding across the ground in the circular movement she'd learned from the gates. The sight made Tenzin feel a sense of contentment, though she still couldn't bend air yet, she had managed to atleast get the movements down, and in a short space of time as well.

However, as he approached to greet her, his sharp eyes noticed minor things amiss with his young pupil.

Though her movement seemed polished, there was a slight but noticeable tremor in her shoulders and arms. Her normally groomed hair looked more noticeably unkempt, almost as if she'd just gotten out of bed. However, more noticeable was the look of intense focus in her eyes, as if she were trying with all her might to block out everything around her. And, above all else, there was the faintest bags under her eyes, not enough to suggest a lack of sleep, but a hint of stress and minor exhaustion.

"Something isn't right." Slowly walking towards Korra, he attempted to simply wave to get her attention but seeing no response he moved towards being vocal. "Korra, breakfast is ready. We'd appreciate you joining us."

Again, no reaction, Korra simply continued to move as if lost in thought and not in the kind of way Tenzin intended through training.

Now feeling more concerned, Tenzin quickened his pace and called out again. "Korra, are you alright?"

Still no reaction, so he finally got physical and placed his hand on her shoulder, finally getting her to jolt up. A faint look of panic in her eyes as she looked at Tenzin, finally relaxing a little when she saw him.

"Oh, hey Tenzin. When did you get here?"

Tenzin's concern grew. "I've been trying to get your attention for the last minute Korra. Are you alright? You seemed distracted. Is something on your mind?"

Another twitch on Korra's face indicated he was right, yet the Avatar tried to play it off, chuckling and lightly stretching her body out to keep busy. "What, no, I'm totally fine. Just got really into training is all. Wanna nail everything down so I can finally Airbend properly."

Tenzin's eyes narrowed, he didn't need to be an expert to tell Korra was clearly shaken by something. "Korra, if there's something troubling you there's no shame in telling me." His words caused Korra to halt and her cheerful facade to start to fall a little. "Is this about what Zolt said yesterday?"

Korra looked ready to offer a response, when the radio music ended and a brief bout of static followed, before she felt her pulse drop somewhat at a familiar voice on the radio.

"Good Morning Republic City. I apologize for the interruption, but I just felt it polite to properly introduce myself to you all given recent events."

Both Tenzin and Korra's faces snapped towards the radio, Tenzin with surprise while Korra looked more panicked than before.

"I am Amon, the Leader of the Equalists. I recently made my presence known to the public and felt it prudent to clarify some matters to avoid any confusion and dissuade any possible panic that may crop up as a result of my arrival."

"Korra, is that really Amon's voice?" Tenzin asked, having never actually met the man or heard him, though a quick look at Korra's shaken face confirmed his suspicions. "How on earth did he manage to get on the radio?"

Korra didn't answer, simply listening to every word the Equalist Leader spoke.

"Regarding the recent capture of Republic City's most wanted gangster, Lightning Bolt Zolt, I can confirm that was indeed our doing. Though I know that's not what you're concerned about, you want to know if the rumors regarding my unique abilities are true…They Are!"

Both benders eyes widened at the confession, just imagining the potential panic that was going to erupt in the streets from this revelation.

"Yes, I am able to permanently strip any bender of their abilities, and did so to Zolt and his ilk, finally ending their reign of terror in this city for good. However, do not take this as some declaration of war against the benders in this city. Contrary to what some might believe, I am not some power mad zealot on an ill-fated crusade to rid the world of Bending. No, what I am is merely a concerned citizen, given the power to bring about true and positive change in this city. And removing the many Triads from power is only the first step towards this end. Which leads to the second part of this message."

Confusion spread on Korra's face, staring at the radio with baited breath, a sentiment shared by Tenzin. "What else could he possibly have to say?"

"For too long, Non-benders have been forced to bend the knee to any bender who confronts them, lacking the means to fight back against their elemental abilities. It is time to level the playing field and start providing the powerless with the means to defend themselves. Thus I am here to announce that we Equalists will begin opening facilities to provide Chi-Blocking training to any Non-bender willing to learn. So that they may no longer have to walk the streets in fear of the criminals that inhabit them."

Both benders were stunned by the idea. Not just the brazen reveal of the information, but also the very idea. Korra more so, actually thinking about how effective the technique was on her and Mako just the other day, such a skill would be a godsend to the many citizens of the city.

"Please understand, this is not some call to arms or an uprising of some kind. All I wish is to provide the citizenry with the means to protect themselves, their families and their livelihoods from the oppressive hand of the criminal element. These facilities are free to any willing to join and all I ask from those who join, only use these techniques for self defense or the defense of others. My aim is not to harm benders, simply balance the scales of this city."

A brief silence hung as his words held in the air before he spoke again.

"Lastly, I want to make it clear. As of now my group's only targets are the criminals of Republic City, the parasites who've for far too long profited from the misery and suffering of its people, using their natural born powers for their own self interest. That time is coming to an end and to all the remaining criminal organizations out there, I will make the same offer I did to Zolt. If you surrender peacefully, turn yourselves into the police, disband your respective syndicates and live out your sentences in prison, then you may keep your bending without fear… but if you choose to continue and ignore my warning, then you will meet the same fate as the Triple Threats. This is not some empty warning, but a vow, one I intend to keep."

With that, the static started to return to the broadcast as Amon spoke the final words of his message. "That is all I have to say today, Republic City. I do hope I've made my stance clear, though I leave your perceptions of me to yourselves. Until we speak again, thank you for lending me your ear and please, have a pleasant day."

Finally the radio went silent again, before another music station started playing, Korra and Tenzin looking at the radio, then back at each other reeling over what just happened.

"This will certainly complicate things." Tenzin spoke first, already predicting the potential fallout that was likely to come. "I can already imagine how livid Lin will be over this and I foresee the council will likely want to discuss this soon." The thought alone was already giving Tenzin a migraine, though he still kept his eyes on Korra to see how she reacted.

Though she seemed visibly shaken somewhat by what was said by Amon, she did seem a little calmer than before, then again she could just be hiding it better he wasn't sure.

"Yeah," Korra finally spoke. "It's gonna get pretty crazy out there. But, Amon seems to be sticking to his word. That's good isn't it?"

Again Tenzin was posed with a question he wasn't sure how to answer and wanted to provide some kind of response, only for Penma's voice to sound from the house.

"Tenzin, it's the Council on the phone. They apparently are calling a meeting and need you there immediately."

Letting out a frustrated huff, Tenzin started mentally preparing himself for the likely high stress situation.

"It would appear I'm needed elsewhere right now." He looked back at Korra, trying her best to hide any fear she might've shown. "We can talk about this after I return later today Korra. For now, perhaps it would be best to try and get your mind off things for a little while. Maybe spend some time with your friends or even do some Pro-Bending practice."

Though Tenzin didn't want to necessarily downplay the potential threat of Amon, having Korra stew in her own unease wasn't going to do any favors either. Right now though, he had to run damage control.

"I better leave, I doubt the Council will be thrilled if I arrive late."

With a whistle, Tenzin called down his Sky Bison and in seconds was airborne, heading for the council building, her eyes drifting to the radio and thinking of a possible distraction.

"Guess I'm paying Naruto another visit."

-Transition: Republic City Councilroom-

"How on earth did we allow such an organization to form under our very noses and grow to such an extent." Jie, the Earth Kingdom representative loudly shouted, face turning red as he spoke. "We should've crushed the Equalists when they were merely activists, now they are a threat to our entire city."

"We shouldn't be so hasty." Kuuk, representative of the Northern Water Tribe, quickly stepped in. "Crime has seen a considerable drop since they first appeared and to remove them now would only damage our relationship with the citizens."

"Must we do anything at all?" Noko, representative of the Fire Nation, inquired, her expression and tone equally neutral. "The Equalists have been relatively benign up to this point, what do we stand to gain from suddenly antagonizing them?"

The three Councilmembers quickly shifted their gaze to the fourth member, another Water Tribe member in his thirties with long black hair in three long ponytails running down his back, clad in a white and blue suit, who'd remained quiet and simply observed the three argue. This was Tarrlok, the Southern Water Tribe representative and Chairman of the Council.

"You're being unusually quiet given the circumstances Tarrlok. Are you not the least concerned about recent events?" Jie again spoke with rancor in his voice.

"I merely thought it prudent to hear from the rest of you before weighing in myself. As Chairman it's in my best interest to hear all opinions before making any decisions for myself." Tarrlok spoke with a relaxed tone despite maintaining a professional posture, his eyes drifting to the last member of the Council. "To that end, we haven't heard your thoughts on the matter, Tenzin? Given your position as one of the last of the Airbenders and mentor to the Avatar, I'd have thought you'd feel more strongly about this than anyone else here?"

The Air Master calmly stroked his beard, feeling the eyes of his fellow councilmen upon him, yet did not let that sway his mind, lest he say something he'd regret. "Until recently, I viewed the Equalists as merely misguided but ultimately well meaning individuals. Though I never agreed with their methods, I did understand and sympathize with their motives."

"And what about now?" Tarrlok asked.

Breathing in softly through his nose, Tenzin again kept his mind clear as he spoke. "I'm not exactly sure what to think. Amon's ability to Energybend is unprecedented and something we can't simply ignore. Yet, if we act rashly we risk not only antagonizing his supporters, but also validating and strengthening his message."

The other Councilors sat silently for a moment, as Tenzin spoke the truth, and none of them could truly argue with it. Even Tarrlok seemed to agree, nodding silently.

"You raise a valid point Tenzin, as it stands our situation is rather delicate. Yet to do nothing would be equally foolish." Tarrlok spoke firmly, eyes drifting to one of Amon's many posters laying on his desk before him. "These Chi-Blocking training facilities are more than a cause for concern. It'd be rather easy for Amon to use them as a means to grow his small collection of followers into an entire army."

Councilman Jie nodded. "That damn technique should've been outlawed ages ago along with Bloodbending. The fact his followers practice a discipline designed specifically to bring down benders should've been enough of an excuse to crush their organization."

"Perhaps, but I doubt Amon would be that foolish," Tenzin spoke, mulling over the facts. "He's stated multiple times his goal is merely to help the city, not drag it into a civil war. And after that public announcement, were he to be revealed as a hypocrite, it would rob him of much of his support and his followers."

"Indeed," Kuuk concurred. "And think of what it would say about us if we advocated shutting down facilities whose aim is to teach citizens how to defend themselves from criminals. It would look as though we were on the side of the Triads ourselves."

"It is certainly a quandary." Noko said calmly. "There will be potential harm no matter what side we decide. Ultimately it boils down to which blow will be the least painful."

Again the council members were left to ponder, weighing their options, the consequences and rewards of both. After a minute, Tarrlok stood up.

"Given the circumstances, I propose that it be best to organize a task force to observe and track the Equalists. Even if they claim to be noble, remaining ideal simply invites too many potential risks."

Noko and Jie seemed somewhat pleased by the idea, while Kuuk was more than apprehensive about it. Tenzin meanwhile wasn't sure how to feel exactly.

"Though I don't agree with Amon's methods, what you're suggesting could just as easily provoke a hostile response, not just from the Equalists themselves but other citizens who support them."

Tarrlok's eyes narrowed at the Airmaster. "So you believe we should just do nothing and hope that Amon is a man of his word?"

"Not at all, only that we cannot act rashly. As of this moment the Equalists have managed to act relatively within the law and with minimum damage and shown a strong adherence to their principles. It's simply too soon to start treating them like a threat."

Tenzin's words earned him quick support from Kuuk and even Noko seemed to be swayed, while Jie remained stubbornly opposed. Thus it left Tarrlok with only one recourse.

"Then I propose we put it to a vote. To appoint a sanctioned task force to track and if necessary restrain the Equalists should they prove to be a threat to the city. All those in favor, raise your hands."

Naturally Tarrlok raised his own hand and Jie followed after him, but much to their displeasure, the remaining three kept their hands down.

"And, all opposed?" Tarrlok spoke with a bitter hint, which only grew at the sight of the three remaining members raising their hands. "Very well, the motion is denied for now. Though I will still insist that at least the police force be kept informed of any potential Equalist actions and naturally, if any of you should acquire information that confirms any Equalist hostility, I trust you to share it."

A round of nods came from the other Councilors. "Very well, then I declare this meeting adjourned for now.

With word given the rest of the councilors quickly got up and left, Tenzin slowly followed, only for Tarrlok to catch up to him for a moment.

"I should hope you're prepared Tenzin. This is a tense situation you've left us in, hopefully your faith is not misplaced."

Tenzin politely bowed his head. "Believe me, I'm aware. And for all our sakes, I hope I'm right as well. Good day to you Tarrlok."

With another bow Tenzin exited, leaving Tarrlok to watch him leave, a ghost of a sneer forming on his face before he too walked away.

-Transition: Republic City Streets-

"Five….ten….fifteen. Damnit, still eight thousand yuans short." Mako groaned angrily as he shoved the latest wages he'd earned at the power plant, a measly 200 yuans, into his pocket. Normally that would be enough for a decent amount of food, but to help cover the entry fee for the Pro-Bending Championship, it was chump change.

"Even with Korra's help we're still this short? Unless a miracle happens we're screwed."

If there'd been one positive after their encounter with the Equalists it was Korra revealing Tenzin's agreement to pay for half their entry fee. Which, along with the five thousand Bolin got from his…last job with the Triple Threats, they'd made decent headway, but sadly even earning just ten thousand yuans was still a monumental challenge and despite working every second he could, it wasn't looking like thing were gonna work out.

Mako quietly stopped at a crosswalk, waited for the signal before absentmindedly walking lost in thought about what to do.

"Spirits, if you're actually listening. Don't suppose you could some how throw about ten thousand or so yuans in my lap could you?"

Mako silently waited for something to happen…and got nothing for his trouble save for the usual smog and car horns. "Yeah, don't know why I expected anything different."

However, his monologue was brought to a halt as fate decided to go for a delayed response as a loud engine buzzing rapidly approached him from the right side.

"Oh no." Mako turned just enough to see something fast, yellow, with someone on top of it, before it collided with him, sending the firebender tumbling a few feet, before landing on his back, staring up at the sky in a daze. "It's official….ow….the universe hates me."

So distracted by his self-defeating musing, he didn't hear the cry of another person, or hear their footsteps as they approached, only being aware of their presence when a shadow was over his head.

"I am so sorry. I tried to stop, but my moped's been acting up lately. Are you okay?"

Mako's eyes blinked, focusing on the shadowy figure looking down at him. However, those eyes quickly widened as he was able to make them or rather, her, out.

"Then again…Wow!"

The woman in question appeared to be around his age, with long wavy hair, light green eyes and a heart shaped face, full lips with a ruby shade of lipstick and light purple eyeshadow, a relatively full figure, clad in black jacket with a red collar, dark red skirt, stockings and black boots.

Needless to say she was quite the sight and if Mako was honest, totally worth getting clocked by her moped…though the minor headache was a bit of a pain.

Slowly he pushed himself up, the girl helping him back to his feet. "Thanks, and don't worry about it, I'm kind of used to getting knocked around. My brother has actually hit me pretty hard during practice."

The mention of that actually caused her eyes to widen and brighten considerably. "I thought I recognized you, you're Mako from the Fire Ferrets. I saw you guys win the other day, it was really impressive."

A growing heat formed on Mako's face, both from the girl and the actual praise. "Oh, really, wow, heh, always nice to meet a fan or get run over by one in this case."

Immediately Mako felt like kicking himself when he saw the girl's expression drop with guilt, causing him to panic. "But it's totally fine, really, nothing's broken, no cuts or anything, see." Immediately he did a few quick poses to show he was okay, which actually made the girl chuckle.

"Well, I'm glad to hear that, but I still feel bad. Let me make it up to you."

"Are you sure?" Mako asked, looking a little off balance from the idea. "I mean, I don't wanna impose or anything and like I said it's not that big a deal."

However, the girl didn't back down. "I hit you with my moped, I should at least make up for it and it's really not that big a deal." Her expression brightened again, sending Mako's pulse racing even more. "How about this, I can treat you to some food from this nice restaurant I know. It's really the least I could do under the circumstances."

Again Mako was considering rejecting, but the girl did seem a bit insistent and he didn't want her to just keep mulling over it. "I guess it couldn't hurt, what's the worst that could happen right?"

With a smile he nodded. "Sure, that sounds cool. Though, I hope you aren't planning to break the bank or anything. I hate it if you spent too much on my account."

The girl chuckled. "Trust me, there's no way that could happen."

The pair shared a laugh, before the girl checked the watch on her wrist. "Oh dang it, I'm late. But I'll see you tonight. Oh, the restaurant is Kwong's Cuisine in the Harmony District, so make sure to dress up."

Mako blinked a little, not expecting a more formal dinner but shrugged. "Sure I'll be there, by the way I didn't get your name."

"Huh, guess I forgot in all the excitement." The girl chuckled. "My name is Asami Sato, and I'm looking forward to seeing you tonight Mako."

With a wink, she quickly lifted her moped, started it back up and rode off, leaving Mako to wave slowly in her direction.

"Yeah, same here." Mako's lovestruck expression left him standing in a stupor for a moment, before a crucial detail finally hit him. "Wait, Harmony District, isn't that in an Upper Class District….."

Mako's expression turned blue as panic replaced excitement.

"What in the world did I just get wrapped into?"

-Transition: Naruto's Noodle Cart-

"Have to say, I was getting pretty worried. Been a few days since I saw you Korra, was beginning to think my favorite Avatar was avoiding me." Naruto spoke candidly from behind his counter cooking for his increasingly frequent customer. The aforementioned Avatar was again slumped over on his counter, chin resting on her arms, looking despondent, yet still smiling at the compliment.

"Sorry about that, things got pretty hectic recently."

From behind the counter, she could hear the shifting of metal stop as Naruto poked his head out from behind. "You mean with Bolin and the Equalists? He dropped by yesterday and spent the next five minutes talking about it. Ended up biting his tongue three separate times."

Again Korra chuckled, this time at the mental image of the good natured earthbender fighting back tears with his now injured tongue hanging out. "I mean, can you blame him? It was a pretty scary situation, almost lost his bending that night."

"No I get it, it is kind of insane to think that such a thing is even possible." Naruto returned to his cooking, making sure to shut the window so Korra couldn't see the conflicted look on his face. "I mean stripping someone of their bending forever. Never thought something like that was possible…least not after Aang died. Then again if Aang could do it, can't you too?"

That comment got a frustrated groan from Korra, the conversation gradually shaking off the worry and fear she'd been feeling throughout the day. "No, apparently that requires a deep spiritual connection and I'm probably the least spiritual Avatar in history. Probably why I still can't Airbend on top of everything else."

A sudden warm sensation on her cheek caused Korra to look up, finding a bowl of noodles next to her and Naruto's own smiling face there to greet her as well. "Kind of feels like we keep having this same discussion as before. So you're not Miss Spiritual, so what? Aang struggled with stuff all the time as did every other Avatar I imagine. The important thing is you don't let those struggles stop you. Long as you keep at it, I'm confident you'll pull it off."

Korra slowly pulled herself up, allowing the bowl to be slid in front of her, Naruto handing her a pair of chopsticks. "You really think so?"

Again Naruto gave her that same warm smile he always did. "Oh I'm pretty sure. That's just the kind of person you are. Sure you're bullheaded, stubborn and have a serious impulse control problem every now and again, but you're also no quitter. That much I can be certain."

Korra's happy expression immediately turned flat, despite the slight blush forming on her face from the compliment. "Was the dressing down necessary? You couldn't just leave out the hard headed thing?"

Naruto merely snickered. "Hey, I'm only being honest with you. And, by that same token, that stubborn streak of yours is probably one of your best qualities."

Korra's minor blush started to grow a bit, suddenly feeling a little shy as she shifted her attention to her bowl of noodles. "...Thanks, Naruto. I needed that."

"Heh, no problem. My cart's always open if you need someone to chat with." Pulling back into the kitchen, Naruto's eyes drifted to the secret compartment of his cart and his smile dropped. "So Korra, mind if I ask you something?"

Korra's head lifted up, a noticeable amount of noodles hanging down her chin in a pretty unladylike display. "Wat?"

Fighting back another chuckle, Naruto leaned against the kitchen counter of the cart, a conflicted look on his face, hidden from Korra's sight. "I can tell you're a little shook up over what happened with Amon and the Equalists. It's none of my business obviously, but I can't help but wonder…what do you think of Amon and his goals?"

An awkward silence hung over the cart. "I mean, I imagine it's the question a lot of people have on their minds right now."

The Avatar's prior lighthearted expression dried up as she swallowed the noodles and stared into the bowl in front of her, looking at her own unsure reflection. "I'm….I'm not sure. I want to believe Amon and the Equalists genuinely wanna help this city…but I'm also scared thinking about it. I don't know. The things Amon can do, what he could do with them, I'm…I'm afraid I guess."

Those words weighed heavily on Naruto's shoulders as he sighed quietly, hands tightening in frustration, trying his best to restrain his anger.

"I knew it, now what am I supposed to do?"

-Transition: Unknown Location-

Councilman Jie sneered quietly in his Satomobile, a faint stench wafted through the windows as he drove through the Dragon Flats Borough, one of the poorer districts in Republic City.

"Damn Tenzin. Using the same Airbender tactic to avoid and evade conflict at any opportunity." He angrily tapped his fist against the side of the car, causing some of the metal to warp due to the unintentional earthbending, though he cared little about the damage as the car was brought to a stop.

Jie quickly exited the vehicle and was greeted by a fellow Earth Kingdom native outside of a fairly large, two story green, brown and gold colored building, the image of badgermole made of a green crystal hung in the middle of the front above the door, a green and gold accented sign reading "The Jade Cavern" appearing almost to be held by the animal.

Jie paid it no mind, angrily walking towards the entrance, quietly handing his keys to one of the doormen. "There's a slight dent on the driver's side, make sure you hammer it out before I get back."

The doorman bowed and nodded, as Jie walked past him and entered the building.

The interior revealed a quiet well furnished tavern heavily steeped in Earth Kingdom design. The walls were primarily dark green in color, with the wooden pillars and molding being painted gold. The floor was a similarly polished wood, though more traditional dark brown as opposed to gold like the others. The bar itself was made with a well polished dark green stone top, with light green painted stone acting as the base, several wooden chairs with green pillows near the front.

On the floor were several light green couches and chairs of various sizes, a decent sized fireplace along the wall made of finely polished and sanded wood and a gold accented pool table near the center.

Most striking however was the green glow bathing the entire room, stemming from multiple glowing green crystals hanging from the ways as well as two separate chandeliers hanging from the ceiling.

Despite being located in such a poor area, the building itself was impressively furnished and opulent, moreso if one checked the collection of expensive liquors at the bar. However, Jie cared little for that or for the small collection of men seated around him, instead he walked towards the bar calmly, waiting for the bartender to approach him.

"What's your poison, sir?"

Jie rolled his eyes at the question. "A bit of Si Wong Juice with a shot of Jenamite."

The barkeep nodded, "Very good sir, please give me one moment."

The councilman sat in relative silence, eyes drifting to the other patrons at the bar, who seemingly were giving him a wide berth. That in turn made the presence that appeared next to him more surprising for most, yet Jie wasn't concerned.

"I don't understand why we have to meet in a public location like this. You know what'll happen if I'm spotted with you."

A feminine voice chuckled lightly at the comment. "Come now Councilmen, this place is well within our territory and far from the prying eyes of anyone who'd talk. You're far too valuable for us to risk so blatantly."

Wood started to creak ever so lightly as Jie's associate leaned back into her chair. "So, how did things go with the council? Are they finally getting proactive or still content to sit on their hands and wait?"

Jie's posture tightened as did his expression. "Unfortunately, we were overruled again. Tenzin managed to sway Kuuk and Noko to remain neutral on the Equalist matter. My hands are sadly tied for the moment."

More creaking sounded as the woman hissed ever so slightly. "That is not the news I was hoping to hear Jie."

Angry, Jie finally turned and faced the woman, glaring at her with equal vigor. "There's little I can do. Unless we can sway another of the council members no action can be taken. And besides, Jargala, shouldn't we be celebrating? Zolt and the Triple Threats are finished. We can finally begin expanding our territory again."

His words caused the woman to chuckle. "You do have a point there Jie."

The woman in question appeared to be in her mid twenties, with considerably darker skin compared to most Earth Kingdom citizens, with shaggy hair in a long ponytail, clad in a light green shirt with golden wrists, white paints with a rose covered shawl wrapped around her left shoulder and waist. A pair of golden earnings as well as a wrist band and hairpiece along with the low cut of her shirt gave her an allure of a fairly royal and sensual air.

This was Jargala Omo, leader of the Creeping Crystals Triad, an exclusively earthbending gang who'd quickly risen up to become one of the most feared gangs in Republic City.

Smiling as she was handed a small drink from the bartender, lightly sipping it before turning her attention back to Jie.

"Removing the Triple Threats will be a true boon to our group, but now they've been replaced with a far greater threat with Amon and his Equalists. As long as they're around, it's only a matter of time before we end up like Zolt. Powerless and imprisoned."

Jargala hand tightened ever so slightly on the glass before her as Jie himself was offered a drink himself. "What would you have me do then? I could try to pressure Noko or Kuuk to side with me during the next vote, Tarrlok seems quite insistent on taking action against the Equalists, and I'm confident nothing will sway Tenzin's position."

"That would be ideal. Ordinarily, I'd have simply targeted these schools and bury them beneath the streets, crushing any hope these fools had." Jargala used her earthbending to make a crystal from one of the lamps to float over to her and started to crush it, cracks forming along its sides. "But, now that I know what Amon can do, antagonizing him ourselves without a plan would be foolish."

With another flick of her wrist, the cracks started to close back up before letting the crystal fall into her hand, calmly shifting it with her fingers. "For now, we'll need to be more careful with our movements, add more security to our businesses, while you continue to move the council to shut down the Equalists. Hopefully that will distract them enough to keep them off our backs until we can hopefully take down Amon ourselves."

"And, what if Amon comes for us before then?" Jie asked, sounding slightly unsure. "My contacts within the Police Force mentioned he has abilities beyond just Energybending. If he chooses to attack before then, could we even stop him?"

Jargala merely chuckled as she lightly tossed the crystal in her hand. "Whatever abilities he has or claims to have, one thing is certain. Amon is still just a man, like anyone else and so long as he can bleed."

Her hand tightened, the crystal shattering into dust that she let fall to the top below. "We can kill him."

-End-

So couple things

Finally got some cover art from someone on twitter named Apolonio, who you might recognize as creating the various art pieces for Heroes of the New World. He obviously does great work and was very responsive to any changes or requests I had, can't recommend him enough to any who are interested.

So you can tell there are some more serious deviations from canon. In canon, the Council were just background characters with no personality so I decided to play around with them a bit and make them more prominent, even giving them names, which they didn't have in canon.

Jie (Earth Kingdom) in Chinese can mean Heroic or Firm, but in this case it's more firm in the abrasive and hostile sense. Dude is extremely stubborn in the worst way, sort of embodying the worst aspects of an Earthbender mindset. And yeah, he's corrupt as well.

Kuuk (Water Tribe) is the Inuit word for River, referencing his more go with the flow mindset. He's more open minded compared to the others and tends to make the more responsible decisions on the council, he's the guy Tenzin gets along the best with.

Toko (Fire Nation) comes from the Japanese word Nokoribi or Ember. It's a reference to how Noko is lacking much of the fiery passion one would normally expect from a Firebender. It's a nod to how in the show she was pretty much neutral, which is how she'll be in my story, never really picking sides in any thing unless she absolutely has to.

For some added fun, through in a couple little references during the last scene

Jie's Drink: Si Wong Juice is a reference to Cactus Juice from the Si Wong Desert, yes that Cactus Juice Sokka got high off of, while the shot of Jenamite is the real name for Creeping Crystal, which we saw during the episode in Omashu. It's essentially a subtle way Jie let's people know he wants to speak with Jagarla.

Jie's comment about Tenzin: Jie mentions how Tenzin likes to avoid and evade conflict even when involved in politics. That's a nod to what Bumi said to Aang about how he typically fights as an Airbender.

Yeah I wanted to throw in some fun easter eggs for the Avatar Fans and also cause I thought it would be entertaining and just add some more depth. Anyway, but yeah things have really gotten shaken up from Canon and you can tell I'm not following the story beat for beat. Always felt the series rushed through so much stuff too quickly and I'm not gonna do that. I want to give as much depth as I can to this story as I can and add different elements I think the series could've benefited from. Obviously also want to give more thought and depth to the whole Non-Bender oppression element and have several more chapters planned out.

Hope you guys enjoyed the chapter and sorry this took a bit, but hope this and the new cover art were worth the wait. Please leave any thoughts, opinions or the like you have in your reviews and hopefully we can make this story get more and more attention. Really hoping it gets added to TV Tropes at some point or just some fan art would be nice.

Anyway, that's all for now, though I'm gonna also start adding some adoptable Oneshot ideas I've had sitting in my head for ages as a way to help me when I get writer's block with this story. It helps out quite well actually.

Alright, that's all I have for now. Hope you enjoy this, Aggura out.
