Chapter 520 Rich
The two men sat across from each other at a battered heavy gray table bolted to the floor in a prison visiting room. Scarlett's psycho-ex's face was flushed as he slammed his fist on the table..
"How much to buy the judge?" he demanded.
Scarlett's psycho-ex's real name was Richard Draper. He'd been given the nickname "Dick" until he learned what it also meant and then threw an epic tantrum that involved trashing his bedroom by ripping his drapes down, setting his bed on fire and breaking everything in the room when his parents refused to call him by his new nickname "Rich". It was a battle of wills between parents and son that was quickly resolved by sending him off to boarding school. They didn't give a damn what he called himself there.
Rich was a couple of inches shorter than the average male. He had neat even features and medium brown hair and eyes. People were drawn to him by his larger than life genial personality unless he was crossed. The tantrum throwing toddler had grown into a short-tempered adult who would do whatever it took to get his way.
Rich's mother Rachel had a child because her husband needed an heir for his family money. A baby wasn't something that either of his parents wanted. His mother was much too busy with her painting. She produced modern art or "crap" as it was referred to by her friends behind her back. Her husband Evan was too busy making money; it was his one true love. Nannies were hired to provide round the clock to care for their son so they were never burdened with parenting.
Rich's parents didn't get to know him until he returned home after graduating USC (University of Southern California or University of Spoiled Children as it was sometimes referred to by its detractors) with a degree in business administration. His father welcomed him to the family real estate business.
Rich loved business especially risk taking and not following laws. He had a philosophy that the more money a person had, the less the law applied. At his level of wealth, he was untouchable by law enforcement.
Once his parents did him the favor or dying in a skiing avalanche, he brought the family business to new heights thanks to his risk taking both with money and law. Now, his recklessly built billion dollar empire was collapsing around him. With his money issues, he no longer had enough money to rise above the law. He was screwed.
The man in the dark charcoal gray suit, white shirt and light gray tie shoved a piece of paper closer to Rich. He was in his fifties, bald with thick lensed black glasses that were the only memorable feature of the man. He was William Smith, a senior partner in the law firm of the same name. Rich had been doing business with his firm for decades, not because Smith had an excellent legal mind but because he had outstanding government and political contacts..
"We can persuade the judge you aren't a flight risk," William snickered because Rich wasn't a flight risk—he was a flight certainty, "for this amount of money."
Rich sucked in his breath when he looked down at the figure. That was a hell of a lot of money and the judge was going to retire in a few months so it wasn't as though giving him bail was going to destroy his career. He frowned at the number. Damned greedy bastard, but he had to get out of prison.
"Make the deal," Rich growled.
"Where are you going to get the money?"
"coin wallet. Damned government froze my assets."
"I know. It wouldn't have mattered that much. You owe more than your assets are worth," there was a faint trace of malicious enjoyment in William's voice. "Is there enough to pay off the judge and meet bail?"
Rich nodded. He carefully wrote down the information William would need to access his coin wallet.
Minutes before he was arrested, he had gotten a lead on his former fiancée. Once he got out of prison, before he left the country, he was going to pay that bitch a visit. He wouldn't be able to her imprison her and torture her for years as he originally planned.
He would just have to be content with a few hours of torture before he killed her.
