Sean & Linda Cavanaugh
Sean Cavanaugh was in the cozy comfort of his living room, the soft evening light filtering through the curtains. He was sitting next to his wife, Linda, on their couch. The television was on, but Sean's attention was not on the screen. He turned to his wife, Linda, with a smile on his lips and said,
"Honey, I think it's time for me to retire."
Linda, who was knitting for her grandchildren, looked up in surprise. She knew Sean's love for his craft, and more importantly, she knew how strong his ambition was to become a captain.
"Are you sure? You were talking about becoming a captain?"
Sean took Linda's hands in his, his gaze boring into his wife's, trying to convey the sincerity of his words.
"Yes, I'm sure. I love this job, but it's time for us to fully enjoy our children and grandchildren, it's time for us to go see Christopher and Shaneen more often, to see our grandchildren more often, to travel, to read books, to go for walks together, in short, to take the time to live."
Linda asked:
"When did you have this idea to retire?
Last month, when one day I saw Vince spending time with his grandchildren. I told myself that I too should do that so I thought about it for a while and I made this decision"
A peaceful smile appeared on Linda's face, who squeezed Sean's hands in return and she said while placing a kiss on her husband's lips
"I agree. You've been a wonderful police officer but it's time to have some time for us. We can do this trip to California with all the family that we've been talking about for a while. I can't wait to tell Christopher and Shaneen"
Sean smiled at his wife's happiness and said:
"I'll gladly leave that joy to you"
They stayed like that for a moment, hand in hand, eyes locked, sharing a knowing silence, filled with promises of new beginnings and family adventures to come, then Linda asked:
"When are you going to tell your superiors ?"
Sean, who had already thought about this crucial step, replied:
"I'm going to tell Vince first tomorrow. Then I'll tell my superiors next Friday. Vince can tell his wife Angela right after and I know she'll tell Jane and Frankie. Jane will tell Maura and Frankie will tell Nina. But I don't want them to tell anyone else because it could hurt them."
Linda asked with a little worry:
"Do you think it could cause them problems?
Yes, especially with the changes it's going to cause. I want to keep it small for now, to avoid speculation or rumors that could disrupt the department and I don't want there to be accusations of favoritism."
Linda nodded in agreement and said
"You're right. It's best to keep this between us for now but I'm sure Vince will understand and say the right thing when he tells Angela
He's a good friend and he was a great cop. He'll know what to do."
Linda, curious and always attentive to details, asked a question that had been on her mind:
"Do you have any idea who could succeed you?"
Sean nodded and said:
"The two best cops I've had. I've named Sergeants Jane Rizzoli and Frankie Rizzoli. Both of them already run their own teams. Well, that'll be up to the big bosses to decide, but I'd really like it to be one of them."
Linda, knowing Jane and Frankie's skills and dedication well, nodded. However, her mind turned to another member of the team and asked,
"And not Sergeant Frost?"
Sean smiled, appreciating the mention of Frost, another key part of his soon-to-be ex-team.
"He's also a great fit, and he's perfect to lead the BPD's IT team. Besides, I'm telling you this because you know how to keep a secret, Frost is in the lead to become lieutenant of the IT team. In this day and age where IT is everywhere, this position needs someone who knows it inside out and Frost is the ideal man for the job.
That's a good idea. Frost has always been on the cutting edge of technology. And for the lieutenant position, whether it's Jane or Frankie, they'll take over well, I'm sure.
Yes, I trust them. And with Frost leading the IT team, we have a solid team for the future. I want to leave knowing that the BPD is in good hands.
So? Who are you going to suggest to your big bosses?"
Sean took a deep breath, his brow furrowing slightly in thought.
"It's going to be hard to choose. They both have incredible cases. Jane has been a detective longer than Frankie, but she hates office work." As for Frankie, he became a sergeant shortly after Vince retired and so he has more experience with public relations and bureaucratic work." Linda nodded, understanding the dilemmas inherent in this decision and said, "True, Jane is an outstanding investigator, but running a unit also requires dealing with bureaucracy and Frankie, with her charm and diplomacy, could well excel in the role of public face of the department.
Exactly. Jane has that tenacity and that flair for solving the most complex cases, but she has always been more comfortable in the field. Frankie who has the same qualities of his sister has shown that he can navigate the waters of police politics as well as investigations and (Sean laughed softly) then Frankie is a little quieter than his sister and Frankie is an excellent detective too, but Nina would be delighted if he went less into the field."
Linda, who knew the Rizzoli family well said
"I'm not surprised. They had five children! A more administrative position for Frankie would be a blessing for them.
Exactly, Jane and Maura had three children, it's more manageable but Frankie and Nina have always been good at managing their large family. Frankie could do a lot of good for the unit while having more time for his family. It would be a win-win situation. ยป
Linda nodded, appreciating the human aspect of this decision and said
"So? Are you going to propose Frankie?
I will propose both files, with their pros and cons but I know that this position would be more pleasant for Frankie
And Jane? Would she agree to be under her little brother's orders?
I think so. She lives for the adrenaline of the field, to solve cases. If she can focus on what she loves the most without the hassle of paperwork and meetings, she will be more than satisfied and besides Jane and Frankie love each other very much
That's true. Jane loves hard police work. And with Maura by her side, she has the means to balance her personal and professional life.
Yes, Maura is a pillar for Jane. Together, they form a formidable duo for investigations, and with Frankie as a lieutenant who like me, started as a patrol officer and who knows the job well, the unit will be solid. "
Linda placed her hand on Sean's, her gaze filled with affection and admiration for her husband and said
"You have thought of everything. I am sure that you leave the BPD in good hands. They will live up to what you have built. "
Sean squeezed Linda's hand in return, grateful for her support and love and said
"Thank you, honey. I'm glad you're okay with me retiring. It makes this decision a lot easier for me to make. "
Linda looked at her husband tenderly and said
"I'm your wife, I love you and I will always help you."
They stood there for a moment, hand in hand, sharing their vision of a future where Sean could finally enjoy the retirement he had so deserved, knowing that the department he loved would continue to thrive and be as effective as ever.
