Chapter 07, The Radio Show

SINCE THEY WERE with Brass, there was no music playing, but Sara felt like listening to something. Grissom was in the front seat staring out of the window in deep thought. Brass was in silence, well aware of how trying to make small talk would lead him to nowhere. So, Sara reached between them to turn on the radio.

The sound of people talking filled the air and to her total surprise, it made her feel better. At least the weight of such terrible murder seemed to be somewhere outside for a moment. The hosts of the program had involving voices, and that made Sara draw a picture of their faces and whereabouts - were they at a studio? It sounded like it.

Which surprised them all and made Brass hit the volume button up was the next attraction. Apparently, Virginia and Ben Cornwell weren't totally satisfied with their previous interview and decided to repeat the show. Even though they could only hear their voices, it was clear to everyone that the couple were even more tense than before.

"We can't still believe she won't be around—-anymore", Virginia's voice filled the car. The breaking voice when she said 'anymore' made Grissom feel instantly angry.

"Ok, that's more fake than some boobs I've seen", Brass said.

Grissom shot him a look that made Brass raise his shoulders.

"We know that the police's job is demanding, but… They don't say a word about the investigation. We know that they kept someone for a few hours, but let him escape", Ben said to the interviewer.

The interviewer asked if they knew who it was.

"We can't say for sure, but it's probably the employee from the building. We believe he acted as revenge for a problem we had with each other", Ben said.

"But how do you think he'd get into the apartment?", the interviewer asked.

"I lost my keys a couple of weeks ago," Virginia said.

"Oh, inside the building? I keep forgetting my keys on the lock outside the apartment. Thank God my neighbors always knock on my door to let me know", the interviewer asked.

"No, no, I'm pretty sure I lost it on the street, but he was following me with the delivery boy, and they took it together", Virginia said.

What the fuck?

"We claim to everyone listening to us to help us find who did it. We are just a regular family trying to find some peace at this moment. Since the day Neave died, we've been calling the police, and we need answers—-", and suddenly Ben's voice got interrupted.

Sara turned off the radio, her hand flying between the two men. They looked at each other before looking at her.

"None of them has been calling, have they? Not even their lawyer, right?", Sara asked.

Grissom looked at Brass, who was in silence trying to remember while his eyes were frozen in the street. Finally he responded in a slow voice.

"The journalists are, but the couple… no".

That made Sara hit the car seat with the palm of her right hand.

"Isn't that strange? I mean, your daughter dies in a terrible way and, instead of trying to reach out to the police, they are giving interviews? C'mon. And what is it with the keys lost on the street? And now she added one more suspect?"

After a few seconds of silence, Sara continued.

"I don't know, but I don't see it coming from a regular family, it's not even a regular story".

Grissom looked at Brass.

"Do you think we are able to get a warrant to their phone records before we invite them over?", he asked.

"I sure can", the detective said.
