The first rays of dawn peeked over the horizon, casting a warm, golden light over the quiet forest. The leaves rustled softly in the morning breeze, and the only sound that broke the silence was the rhythmic footfalls of Naruto as he sprinted through the trees, his feet sticking to the bark effortlessly as he ran up the trunk of a towering oak.
Naruto grinned to himself as he reached the top, flipping off the tree branch and landing softly on his feet, hanging upside down from the branch above him. He felt the familiar hum of chakra flowing through his feet, anchoring him to the tree even as gravity tried to pull him down.
"Hey, Izuna-sensei!" Naruto called out, his voice full of excitement. "Look! I'm upside down now!"
From below, seated in a relaxed position on a nearby rock, Izuna smiled faintly, his head slightly tilted as if listening intently to Naruto's movements. His unseeing eyes were hidden beneath the brim of his worn straw hat, but there was no need for sight—his other senses told him everything he needed to know about Naruto's progress.
"I can hear you're getting better at balancing your chakra, Naruto," Izuna responded calmly, his voice steady and composed. "But don't get too cocky. Staying still is one thing, but can you move while upside down?"
Naruto's grin faded slightly as he furrowed his brow. "Moving, huh? Well, I'll give it a shot!"
With determination etched on his face, Naruto shifted his weight and began to walk upside down along the branch, taking slow, measured steps. He wobbled a little at first, but quickly adjusted, his chakra flaring as he focused on distributing it evenly across the soles of his feet. He moved from branch to branch, a little shaky but growing more confident with each step.
Izuna nodded, his smile growing. "Not bad. You're improving faster than I expected."
Naruto flipped down from the tree and landed gracefully on the forest floor. His face was flushed with pride, his energy brimming as always. "Of course I'm getting better! I've been training every day, right? No way I'm gonna give up!"
Izuna stood up from his spot and turned towards the sound of Naruto's footsteps. "True, but you're still far from mastering chakra control. Walking on trees and hanging upside down is only the beginning."
Naruto crossed his arms and pouted slightly, looking frustrated. "But, Sensei! I can walk on water now too! That's gotta count for something!"
Izuna raised an eyebrow, his expression still calm. "Walking on water is a good start, but running on water? Jumping from one spot to another while maintaining your chakra flow? That's where real control comes in. Show me."
Naruto blinked, his frustration turning into curiosity. He didn't hesitate, though. Darting toward the nearby river, Naruto ran across the ground and leaped into the air, landing lightly on the surface of the water. His chakra surged through his feet, creating a steady platform beneath him as he stood on the river's surface.
Izuna listened carefully, his senses attuned to Naruto's movements. "Now, run."
Naruto nodded, determination back in his eyes. He took off in a sprint, his feet barely touching the water as he dashed across the surface. The water rippled beneath him, but Naruto kept his balance, maintaining the precise control needed to keep from sinking.
"Not bad," Izuna called out. "Now, jump."
Naruto gritted his teeth and pushed off with his legs, launching himself into the air. He felt his chakra flicker for a split second as he left the water's surface, but quickly adjusted, landing on the river a few meters ahead without breaking his stride.
"See?" Naruto shouted triumphantly. "I can even jump now!"
But Izuna was quick to correct him. "You're using too much chakra when you jump. If you don't control the flow properly, you'll burn through your reserves before long. Try again. This time, less chakra."
Naruto frowned in concentration and went for another leap, this time focusing on using just the right amount of chakra. He jumped, feeling the delicate balance of power in his feet, and landed softly on the water's surface, barely causing a ripple.
"Better," Izuna said, his voice approving. "But you still need more practice. Running on water requires constant adjustments in chakra flow. The faster you go, the more precise you need to be. And jumping from one part of the water to another is even harder. That's where true control comes in."
Naruto, his face shining with sweat, nodded vigorously. "I'll keep practicing, Sensei! I'm gonna master this, I promise!"
Izuna smiled faintly. "I know you will. But remember, Naruto—power without control is useless. It doesn't matter how much chakra you have if you can't use it efficiently. That's why I won't teach you anything advanced until you've mastered this."
Naruto's eyes widened in frustration. "But I'm ready for more! I wanna learn more jutsu! You can't hold me back, Sensei!"
Izuna's face softened, his tone gentle but firm. "I'm not holding you back, Naruto. I'm preparing you. You've got potential, but if you rush ahead without mastering the basics, you'll hit a wall—and it'll be one you can't climb over."
Naruto's shoulders slumped a little, but he knew Izuna was right. Even though he wanted to move on to more exciting jutsu, he trusted his sensei's judgment. After all, he had never steered him wrong before.
"Fine," Naruto muttered, his frustration giving way to determination once more. "I'll keep training. But when I master this, you've gotta teach me some cool stuff, alright?"
Izuna chuckled quietly. "We'll see."
For the next hour, Naruto continued his chakra control exercises, running across the water, jumping from one spot to another, and constantly adjusting his chakra flow. Every time he faltered, Izuna was there with quiet guidance, his sharp senses picking up on every little mistake. And with each correction, Naruto grew stronger, more precise, and more determined.
By the time they finished, the sun was higher in the sky, casting its light through the trees. Naruto collapsed on the grass, panting heavily, but his face was alight with satisfaction. He had made progress—real progress—and though there was still a long way to go, he could feel himself getting stronger every day.
Izuna stood nearby, his head tilted slightly as if listening to the sounds of the forest. "You've done well today, Naruto."
Naruto, still breathing heavily, grinned up at him. "Thanks, Sensei. I'll keep getting better. Just watch!"
Izuna's smile remained gentle. "I'm sure you will. But remember, mastering chakra control is just the first step. There's still much more for you to learn."
Naruto sat up, his eyes gleaming with excitement. "I'm ready for whatever comes next! Believe it!"
As the two of them began to leave the training ground, Naruto's mind was already racing ahead, thinking about all the jutsu he would learn, all the ways he would become stronger. But deep down, he knew that Izuna was right—there was no point in rushing. Mastering the fundamentals was the key to unlocking his true potential.
As the first light of day began to brighten the village of Konoha, Naruto and Izuna made their way through the hidden paths of the forest, heading back toward Naruto's apartment. The morning training had been intense, pushing Naruto's chakra control to its limits, and although Naruto's energy never seemed to run out, he was clearly exhausted from the hours of sparring and honing his skills.
"Hey, Sensei," Naruto huffed, rubbing the back of his head, "do I really gotta go to the academy today? I already know all the basic jutsu they're gonna teach. It feels like a waste of time."
Izuna chuckled softly, his calm demeanor unshaken as they continued walking. "True, Naruto, but you need to keep up appearances. The last thing we want is anyone suspecting how far ahead you've gotten. Besides, it's important to know what your classmates are capable of. Knowledge is power."
Naruto sighed, adjusting the weight of his backpack. "I guess you're right... but still! I wanna learn more advanced stuff already!"
"Patience, Naruto," Izuna replied smoothly, his voice low and measured. "Everything in due time."
As they neared the outskirts of Konoha, both of them paused. It was time to put their cover into action.
Naruto concentrated for a moment, forming the familiar hand signs with ease. "Henge no Jutsu!" he called out, transforming his appearance into that of a slightly older, less recognizable version of himself. His spiky blonde hair turned darker, his whisker marks faded, and his clothes became plainer—just another kid walking the streets of Konoha.
Next to him, Izuna, too, changed his appearance. With a subtle transformation, his old and slightly weathered features softened into a youthful and inconspicuous face, his clothing turning into that of a simple civilian. It was important that no one noticed them together, especially after their secret training sessions.
"Let's go," Izuna murmured, giving Naruto a small nod.
They began their walk through the village streets, moving silently and with purpose. Despite his fatigue, Naruto couldn't help but glance around, taking in the sights and sounds of Konoha. The village was lively in the morning hours, with shopkeepers setting up their stalls and villagers bustling around with their daily routines.
Naruto's sharp eyes flicked toward the rooftops, where he occasionally saw glimpses of ANBU members patrolling. It was a constant reminder that they had to be careful—especially with ANBU's constant surveillance. No one could know about their training or the depth of Izuna's abilities.
As they moved through the streets, Naruto leaned in and whispered, "Do you think anyone's watching us?"
Izuna shook his head slightly, his senses stretched out as he scanned their surroundings. "No. I placed a fuinjustu seal near the apartment and set up chakra markers around this route. No one's tailing us."
Naruto nodded, though his eyes remained wary. They had been careful for months now, and so far, their secret had remained safe. But the tension of keeping everything under wraps always weighed on him, even on simple walks like this.
Soon enough, they arrived at Naruto's apartment. It was small, tucked away from the main part of the village, but it was home. Before entering, Naruto gave a quick glance around, ensuring that no one was watching. When they were satisfied, Naruto and Izuna dropped their disguises and slipped inside.
The apartment was exactly as they had left it. One of Izuna's shadow clones was sprawled out on the Naruto's bed, mimicking Naruto in deep sleep. Meanwhile, another clone of Izuna was sitting on a chair near the window, casually smoking a cigar.
"Looks like everything's normal," Naruto said with relief, dispelling both clones with a quick hand sign. The familiar puff of smoke filled the room as the clones vanished, leaving the apartment empty once more.
Naruto, feeling the weight of the morning's exertion hit him full force, collapsed onto the chair. His muscles ached, and the fatigue from the sparring session with Izuna was catching up to him. He rubbed his shoulder, grimacing. "Man, I'm beat… Why does chakra control have to be so tiring?"
Izuna leaned against the wall, his posture relaxed but his eyes thoughtful. "Chakra control is the foundation of everything you'll do as a shinobi. The more control you have, the more efficiently you can fight. Think of it as a muscle—the more you train it, the stronger it gets."
Naruto groaned, stretching his arms over his head. "Yeah, but it doesn't make it any easier. I'm sore all over from our sparring today."
Izuna allowed himself a rare, amused smile. "That's good. If you're not feeling the pain, you're not making progress."
Naruto rolled his eyes but couldn't help but smile back. Despite the grueling training, he knew he was getting stronger, faster, and more skilled every day under Izuna's guidance. The fact that no one else knew—neither his classmates nor the teachers at the academy—was the best part. It made him feel like he had a secret weapon up his sleeve.
Naruto knew the day was far from over.
"Alright, let's get to it," Naruto muttered, rolling his shoulders. He still had to prepare for the academy, but first things first—breakfast and lunch had to be made.
Izuna nodded silently in agreement, watching Naruto closely. It was part of their routine now, part of Naruto's continued development. Over time, Naruto had learned more than just chakra control and jutsu; under Izuna's meticulous guidance, he had also honed practical skills—cooking being one of them.
Naruto stepped into the kitchen area, already knowing what he wanted to make. He had learned to prepare a variety of meals, and while he enjoyed cooking in general, there was one ingredient he loved working with the most: tomatoes. It was no secret that Izuna had a deep fondness for tomatoes, and it had rubbed off on Naruto as well. Anything with tomatoes made the meal feel special.
"I think I'll make a nice tomato-based stir fry for breakfast," Naruto said aloud, more to himself than to Izuna.
Izuna, who was always calm and composed, raised an eyebrow slightly, a rare hint of amusement in his otherwise stoic expression. "You know me well, Naruto. Tomatoes again?"
"Hey, can't help it! You're the one who's obsessed," Naruto grinned, his tiredness fading slightly as he got to work.
Before cooking, Naruto made his way up to the rooftop. There, nestled on the roof of their little apartment, was Naruto's pride and joy—their vegetable garden. Izuna had instructed him on how to cultivate it properly, and now, with Naruto's daily care, it had flourished into a bounty of fresh vegetables.
The sight always made Naruto smile. Lush rows of onions, potatoes, tomatoes, carrots, and more filled the rooftop, all healthy and thriving under Naruto's diligent attention. Every morning, Naruto would come up here to water the plants and tend to them, and now, the fruits of his labor were plentiful.
It gave him a sense of satisfaction unlike anything else—growing something with his own hands and then using it to cook a meal. The vegetables from his garden, combined with the meat he hunted during training sessions with Izuna, made every meal feel like an accomplishment.
Naruto carefully selected some ripe tomatoes and a few onions, then headed back down to the kitchen.
As he chopped the ingredients with practiced precision, Izuna observed him silently. Over the past months, Naruto had learned to handle the sharpness of knives and the heat of the stove just as well as he handled kunai and fire jutsu. It was all part of his training, after all—mastering everything from the battlefield to the kitchen.
The smell of sizzling vegetables soon filled the air, and Naruto moved about the kitchen with ease, stirring the pan and seasoning everything to perfection. Despite his usual loud and hyperactive personality, there was a focused calm that settled over him whenever he cooked. It was something Izuna had encouraged—finding peace in simple, everyday tasks.
Soon enough, breakfast was ready—a hearty tomato and vegetable stir fry, complete with a side of freshly baked bread that Naruto had prepared the night before. The lunch for later was packed neatly in a bento box, full of nutritious food that would keep Naruto energized through the day at the academy.
As they sat down to eat, Naruto looked at Izuna, who silently took a bite of the food. For a moment, they sat in comfortable silence, the bond between them deeper than words could express.
"This is good," Izuna finally said, his tone neutral but approving.
Naruto grinned. "Told ya I'm getting better at this. And it's all from the vegetables we grew ourselves!" He gave a little thumbs up, clearly proud of the work they had put into their rooftop garden. "It's awesome making food from stuff I've grown and animals I've hunted."
Izuna nodded, glancing toward the window where the morning sun streamed through. "You're learning more than just shinobi skills, Naruto. Survival isn't just about fighting—it's about being resourceful. Growing your own food, preparing for every possibility, and finding strength in simple things—that's the way of a true shinobi."
Naruto stuffed another bite into his mouth, nodding enthusiastically. "Yeah, yeah, I get it. But I'm still gonna be Hokage one day. Gotta keep getting stronger!"
Izuna's eyes narrowed slightly, but there was a hint of pride in his gaze. "In time. For now, you still need to keep up your act at the academy."
Naruto groaned, pushing his plate away slightly. "Yeah, I know... But it sucks having to pretend to be an idiot all the time. I've already finished all the homework, I know all the three basic jutsu... I can do so much more! Why can't I just show them?"
Izuna gave him a stern look. "You must let your enemies underestimate you. They need to believe you are less than what you are. If they do, they'll never see you coming when the time is right."
Naruto sighed but nodded, accepting the logic. "Fine, fine. I'll keep playing the fool... but it's getting harder to hold back, you know?"
"You'll get used to it," Izuna said, standing up and stretching his arms. "Now finish your breakfast and head to the academy. The day's only just beginning."
Naruto stuffed the last of the food into his mouth, then jumped to his feet, full of energy once more despite the lingering soreness from the morning's training. He grabbed his packed lunch and slung his bag over his shoulder.
"Alright, see you later, Sensei!" Naruto called, rushing toward the door.
Izuna nodded, watching as Naruto disappeared out the door, the weight of the world on his young shoulders, yet he carried it with a smile.
Once the door shut behind Naruto, Izuna stood in silence for a moment longer. He took one last look around their small but cozy apartment, then walked over to the window, lighting his cigar as he watched the village outside.
The boy had come a long way in such a short time. There was no doubt in Izuna's mind—Naruto was destined for something great. But for now, they had to keep everything hidden, keep him in the shadows. There would come a day when Naruto's true strength would be revealed, but that day was not today.
Izuna inhaled deeply, the smoke curling upward as he exhaled slowly. The future was uncertain, but for now, everything was as it should be.
