Hours later, Michael and Maddie sat inside Fi's hospital room beside the door. Jesse left to go home, and Sam sat on the other side of the bed asleep, having already been seen by a doctor and released an hour ago. Michael wanted to hold Fi, to comfort her, but Sam was already doing that. Maddie's voice cut through his thoughts, soft but steady.
"You know, she's going to need both of you, right? It won't be easy, but it'll be important. Don't let this drive a wedge between you."
Michael's gaze hardened, but he nodded.
"I'm not going anywhere. Just… I don't know how to fit in yet."
Maddie gave him a small, understanding smile, before standing up to check on Fi and Sam. She gently laid a hand on Fi's arm and Fi stirred, slowly opening her eyes and looking at Maddie.
"You're safe honey, you're in the hospital." she whispered.
Fi's gaze drifted to Sam, who was still asleep beside her, his hand resting protectively on hers even in sleep. She clung to him tighter, as if afraid he might disappear if she let go. Maddie smiled as she turned toward Michael.
"Let's go home, there isn't much we can do here."
Michael nodded, looking over. Fi was already asleep, Sam was still asleep as they left Michael gave once last glance before closing the door. Sometime during the night, Sam woke up, looking around and realizing it was just Fi and him. There was a knock on the door, and a doctor walked in to check Fi's vitals.
"How is she?" Sam's voice cracked as he spoke, thick with emotion.
"Physically, she's stable," the doctor said, her tone calm, though Sam could see the weight in her eyes as she glanced at Fi.
"But we need to discuss something important. She was physically attacked."
"I know she was raped. I was forced to watch and they forced me to…." Sam trailed off.
"We did a rape kit and came back with semen, DNA.. but nothing under nails.. no hits yet."
Sam nodded.
"What about… her becoming…" He trailed off again.
"Pregnant?"
He nodded.
"We would have to do a blood test, but the chances are higher since there was more than one sexual encounter. When she wakes up I'll come have a discussion with both of you about plan B, testing for STD's, and a round of antibiotics."
"How long…"
"She can get blood work done in about a week to know with a high degree of certainty."
"When can she go home?"
"She can go home tomorrow."
Sam nodded, thanking her as she left. Sam moved the chair closer, gently holding her hand as he fell asleep, listening to the sounds of the hospital and the monitors. Hours later, he woke when someone's grip tightened on his hand, and he looked up, seeing Fi coming to.
"Fi?" His voice was thick with hope and sleep.
"Sam?" Her eyes searched for his, finally landing on him.
"I'm here."
Her gaze locked onto his, tears welling up as her lips quivered.
"What… what happened?"
"What do you remember?" Sam whispered, being gentle with her.
"Three guys and pain. Then you had to… then you held me, then Michael and Jesse and now." She whispered.
"Anything else?"
"I remember your voice… you were screaming at them. And then… I blacked out."
Sam nodded, his jaw tightening as he tried to push down the rage that threatened to resurface.
"I was there," he said quietly.
"I tried to stop them, but they… they forced me to watch, and hurt you."
Fi's eyes widened slightly, a fresh wave of tears spilling over.
"Sam…"
"I'm sorry," he said, his voice breaking.
"So so sorry, Fi. I couldn't stop them, but I swear to you, I'll never let anyone hurt you again. Never."
Fi reached for him and Sam hugged her. After a few minutes, Fi pulled him up onto the bed, laying with her head on his chest, and she looked up at him, asking,
"Has the doctor been in? Are you okay?"
"She was about… three hours ago," he said looking at the time.
"She said she would come back and talk to you about STDs, antibiotics, do a round of bloodwork, and Plan B."
"Are you okay?"
"Other than bruises, I'm okay."
"Where did the others go?" Fi whispered, snuggling closer to him.
"Must've left. The only person I've seen is your doctor." He rested his chin on top of her head.
Fi nestled closer to Sam, letting out a soft sigh.
"I'm glad they left," she murmured, her fingers absentmindedly tracing patterns on his chest.
"I… don't need everyone here at once fussing over me like I'm helpless." She chuckled lightly, the sound muffled against him.
"Right now, I just need you."
Sam smiled softly, tilting his head to press a gentle kiss to her hair.
"Always here when you need me, Fi," he whispered.
