The golden rays of the setting sun cast a warm glow through the windows of the Class VII dormitory lounge. AlfinReise Arnor had been mulling over her thoughts all day, a bittersweet blend of nostalgia and longing. She remembered how her younger brother, Cedric, had once been so close to her, always seeking her attention and affection. Since the Vermillion Apocalypse, however, Cedric had grown distant, his cheerful nature replaced with a somber demeanor. She tried to support him, but he pushed her away. She had been powerless to help him before, and was powerless now.
Alfin had been putting on a brave face, keeping her spirits high for everyone around her. Yet, deep down, she felt a growing ache she wanted to fill with friendship and familial connection. Her mind wandered to Fie—Class VII's laid-back yet surprisingly affectionate member—whose display several days ago had warmed Alfin's heart. How lovely it would be to become closer with her.
Driven by these thoughts, Alfin decided to visit the dorms. Rean and Laura greeted her warmly as she arrived. The conversation flowed easily, their camaraderie as endearing as always. As they spoke, the soft padding of footsteps drew their attention.
Fie appeared in the doorway, clutching a blanket in one hand, her other hand rubbing at her eyes. Her hair was slightly mussed, and her cheeks had a faint, sleepy flush. She dragged her blanket behind her like a child, exuding an unintentional charm that instantly melted Alfin's heart.
"Good evening, Fie," Laura greeted with a warm smile, but Fie only mumbled something incoherent in return, clearly too tired to form proper words.
Seizing the opportunity, Alfin stood up and gestured toward the spot on the couch next to her with a hopeful smile. "Fie, dear, why don't you come over here and sit with me?"
Fie blinked slowly at Alfin, her sleep-addled brain processing the invitation. With a small shrug, she shuffled her way over. When she reached the spot next to Alfin, she leaned into her. Pleasantly surprised, the princess gently guided Fie into a cozy embrace, wrapping the blanket snugly around her like a cocoon.
Fie let out a small, content sigh, nestling against Alfin's chest. Her head found a comfortable spot on Alfin's shoulder, and within moments, her breathing slowed, signaling she had drifted off to sleep.
"Ah, Fie…" Rean said, shaking his head with a small smile. "I'm sorry, your Highness. This happens sometimes when she's sleepy. She usually doesn't even remember."
Alfin's heart swelled as she gazed down at the peacefully snoozing Fie. "It's no trouble," she whispered with a smile, "Laura, I hope you don't mind. My heart is feeling quite full."
Laura chuckled softly, her eyes full of understanding. "Not at all. Fie has a way of doing that, doesn't she?"
As Alfin carefully brushed a strand of hair behind Fie's ear, she marveled at how serene the girl looked, her chest rising and falling with every steady breath.
Suddenly, a soft thunk echoed from the kitchen—a pot or pan knocking against the counter. Alfin tensed slightly, worried the noise might disturb Fie. But instead of waking, Fie snuggled closer, her small hands clutching Alfin's arm.
Alfin exhaled softly, her lips curling into a tender smile. Yet, as her gaze lingered on Fie, her thoughts drifted back to Cedric. She bit her lip, the weight of her emotions pressing down. "You all share such a wonderful bond," she said quietly, her voice tinged with melancholy. "I wish I could have been a part of it."
Rean stepped closer, his expression gentle. "Alfin," he said sincerely, "you may not have attended classes with us, but you are part of our group. You have been for quite some time."
"Indeed. I feel the same, and I'm certain the rest of Class VII does as well," Laura said.
Alfin felt her throat tighten, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears. She held Fie a little closer, drawing comfort from the moment. "Thank you all so much, truly," she said quietly, and then in a voice barely a whisper said, "I won't give up on you, Cedric."
Rean and Laura exchanged a glance, their expressions filled with quiet understanding. The lounge fell into a peaceful silence once more, the warmth of their bond filling the space as Alfin continued to hold Fie close, treasuring the rare and precious moment.
