The peaceful atmosphere of the dorm was interrupted by the sound of the front door slamming open. Laura, who had been reclining with a book on the couch, startled and looked up just in time to see Fie practically bouncing into the room.
"Laura, come quick!" Fie exclaimed, her cheeks slightly flushed from excitement.
Laura sat up immediately, concern flashing across her face. "What's wrong? Did something happen?"
"No time for questions—just hurry!" Fie motioned for her to follow, already halfway back out the door.
Laura hesitated only for a second before setting her book aside and trailing after Fie. They jogged down the street, Fie leading with a determination that suggested something urgent. Laura's mind ran through possibilities, from a serious emergency to something entirely mundane—knowing Fie, it could be either.
Finally, Fie came to an abrupt stop and pointed ahead. There, on the sidewalk, lay a fat, fluffy white cat sprawled out like he owned the place.
Fie turned to Laura with a smile so bright it made Laura's heart skip a beat. "Oh good, he's still here. Isn't he precious? Look at him! He's quite the unit."
Laura blinked, taking a moment to process the scene. Then a warm laugh bubbled out of her. "You brought me all this way to see a cat?"
"Not just a cat. The cat. Look at him. He's purrfection," Fie said.
Before Laura could respond, Fie plopped down on the ground beside the feline, laying on her side and propping her head up with one hand. She reached out with the other to gently pet the fluffy creature, her voice soft and playful. "Who's a handsome chonker, huh? You are, yes you are."
Laura couldn't help but chuckle at the scene. Fie's rare bursts of unabashed affection always had a way of melting her heart. She knelt beside them, cautiously reaching out to stroke the cat's silky fur.
The cat, seemingly unbothered by his sudden audience, began purring like a small engine. After a moment of indulgence, he shifted his weight and promptly flopped onto Fie's chest, making himself at home.
Fie's face was immediately dusted with white fur. Her nose twitched, and she brushed at it with a laugh. "Well, guess I'm a cat bed now."
"He seems to like you," Laura laughed, brushing a stray tuft of fur off Fie's shoulder.
"Not to brag, but I'm pretty sure I give the best pets," Fie replied.
For several minutes, the two sat there, sharing smiles and chuckles while lavishing attention on the fluffy stray in a nice, carefree moment.
Eventually, the cat decided he'd had enough and sauntered off with an air of regal indifference. Fie remained on the ground, letting out a contented sigh as she brushed fur from her clothes.
"That," Fie said, sitting up and grinning at Laura, "was great. I'm glad we got to do that together."
"Me too. Thank you for sharing this moment with me, Fie," Laura said. She offered her a hand to help Fie up, her smile soft and warm.
As they walked back to the dorm, Fie shot her a sidelong glance. "See? Totally worth it, right?"
Laura chuckled. "Absolutely."
In her heart, Laura couldn't help but feel grateful for Fie's spontaneity—it was moments like these that made their time together unforgettable.
