Chapter Eight: Allies and Ambushes
The wasteland stretched endlessly before Alex and Grimdramon as they made their way back toward safer ground. The Book of Darkness pulsed softly in Alex's hands, its new passage glowing faintly as if alive.
"So, what's the book saying now?" Grimdramon asked, his tone more curious than usual.
Alex flipped through the glowing pages, his brow furrowing. "It's… like instructions. But not for me—it's talking about finding other Crests. Looks like we're not the only ones tied to this fight."
Grimdramon grunted. "Other Crests mean other Digimon partners. If they're anything like you, we might stand a chance."
Alex shot him a sidelong glance. "Gee, thanks for the vote of confidence."
As they walked, the landscape began to change. The barren wasteland gave way to rolling hills dotted with metallic trees. The air grew warmer, the digital sky above flickering between day and night in unnatural shifts.
"It's too quiet," Grimdramon muttered, his tail twitching.
Alex tightened his grip on the book. "You think Duskmoramon's still following us?"
"Wouldn't put it past him. But something feels… off."
Before Alex could respond, a rustling noise came from the bushes nearby. Both Alex and Grimdramon froze, their eyes scanning the area.
"Stay alert," Grimdramon whispered, stepping in front of Alex.
Suddenly, a Digimon leaped out—a sleek, feline figure with golden fur and piercing blue eyes. It landed gracefully, its claws gleaming in the dim light.
"Who are you?" Alex demanded, holding up his Digivice.
The Digimon tilted its head, its voice soft but firm. "I am Lynxmon, guardian of this region. And you are trespassing."
Grimdramon growled, his wings flaring. "We're just passing through. Back off."
Lynxmon narrowed its eyes. "You carry the Book of Darkness. That makes you a threat."
Alex stepped forward, his hands raised. "Wait! We're not here to cause trouble. I'm trying to stop the dark lords."
Lynxmon hesitated, its tail flicking. "Prove it."
Before Alex could respond, the ground shook violently, and a deep rumbling sound echoed through the hills. Lynxmon's ears perked up, and it turned toward the noise.
"What now?" Grimdramon muttered, his claws at the ready.
A massive Digimon burst from the ground, its body resembling a twisted combination of rock and machine. Its red eyes glowed with malice as it let out a deafening roar.
"It's Rhinogoremmon!" Lynxmon shouted. "One of the dark lords' enforcers!"
Grimdramon snarled. "Great. Just what we needed."
Rhinogoremmon charged, its massive frame shaking the ground with every step. Alex and Lynxmon dove out of the way as Grimdramon leaped into action, meeting the beast head-on.
"Alex!" Grimdramon called out. "We need a boost here!"
Alex raised his Digivice, his Crest of Shadowflame glowing. "Grimdramon, digivolve!"
The familiar surge of energy enveloped Grimdramon, transforming him into Nightshroudmon. He wasted no time, launching a Shadowflame Slash that struck Rhinogoremmon square in the chest.
But the massive Digimon barely flinched, retaliating with a powerful stomp that sent shockwaves through the ground.
Lynxmon joined the fight, darting around Rhinogoremmon with incredible speed, slashing at its legs and trying to find an opening.
Alex watched the battle, his mind racing. "There's gotta be a way to weaken it…"
The Book of Darkness began to glow, its pages flipping on their own. A new passage appeared, showing an image of Rhinogoremmon and a weak point on its back.
"Nightshroudmon, aim for its back!" Alex shouted.
Nightshroudmon nodded, leaping into the air and landing behind Rhinogoremmon. He struck the weak point with all his strength, causing the massive Digimon to stagger.
Lynxmon seized the opportunity, launching a blinding attack that struck Rhinogoremmon's head. With a final roar, the beast collapsed, dissolving into fragments of data that scattered into the wind.
The battle was over, but the tension lingered.
Lynxmon approached Alex, its gaze softer now. "You fought well. Perhaps I misjudged you."
Alex nodded, breathing heavily. "We're all fighting the same enemy. We need to stick together."
Lynxmon considered his words before finally nodding. "Very well. I will join you on your journey. But be warned—the dark lords won't stop coming."
Grimdramon smirked. "Good. Let them come. We'll be ready."
As the trio set off together, the digital sky shifted again, casting an ominous glow over the horizon.
Their journey was far from over, but with new allies and newfound strength, Alex felt a glimmer of hope.
