Authors note: Welcome to the first installment of my rewrite series. I'm rewriting old fanfics in a new, more developed voice, I hope you enjoy!
"Come with me, Miss Evans and Mr. Lupin," Professor McGonagall said to a scared Lily Evans and Remus Lupin. The two eleven-year-olds stared at their shoes as they followed their head of house from the Great Hall. As if being the youngest new kids in the school wasn't bad enough, they had to leave the opening feast before they got to see their new dormitory. They both knew they'd get asked about why they left early, and the lying would begin before they really got to make friends.
"Here we are," McGonagall said as they came up to a large stone griffin. "Bertie Bott's," the professor said, and the griffin jumped out of the way, revealing a spiral staircase that began moving upward. Together the trio walked up to the staircase and rode it up to the Headmaster's Office.
It was a large, circular office with lots of moving pictures on the wall and various magical instruments strewn about. Having grown up as a muggle, or nonmagical person, Lily gazed around the room in awe. Her mind was blown as she watched the pictures observe her and Remus, whispering between themselves. Remus, a pureblood wizard, looked at the various instruments around the room, excited by the idea of maybe, one day, getting to use or play with one of them.
Distracted by the room around them, the two students missed the older wizard who walked into the office, his signature half moon glasses glinting in the twilight. They jumped when he greeted them and had him take a seat before the large oak desk in the middle of the room. Cautiously, they each perched on the edge of the seats before the large desk. They exchanged a fearful glance before they turned their attention to the old man.
Dumbledore smiled at the two students in an attempt to ease some of their tension. He knew they must be anxious to hear why he'd called them into his office, and yet, he chuckled to himself about how wonderful it must be to be a first year, with the whole world ahead of them. And they didn't even know to appreciate it.
"Hello, Remus and Lily," he began. "I know you must be wondering why I asked for you to meet with me tonight. I apologize for interrupting your dinner, but I wanted to ensure that, before you got too familiar with your house, you knew what precautions had been put into place for your time here at Hogwarts." Both students visibly tensed at this. They knew he must know their secrets, but to tell them in front of another student? Unless they also- Their thought were cut off by Dumbledore. "You both wrote to me, explaining your predicament over the summer, and after lots of planning and research, I believe we have found a solution that should work for all parties involved."
Lily raised her hand cautiously. "Professor," she began slowly. "What do you mean, our 'predicament'?"
"The fact that you both are werewolves," Dumbeldore replied calmly.
Lily and Remus' heads snapped toward the other.
"You-"
"You're a-"
They both paused and started smiling, a weight lifted from their shoulders. Finally, someone else who understood their life and their experience.
"I have had a building set up for you to change in," Dumbledore continued. "I must warn you though. If you transform together you will become a part of the same pack and become closer than any other relationship you will ever have."
Lily looked over at Remus and smiled shyly. She knew, somewhere deep down, that this had already begun. When they met, she felt a pull to him that she had never felt to another person before in her life. She didn't know where it came from, but all she knew was that this boy was going to be a part of her life for its remainder.
"That's all I have for you," Dumblebore said. "What questions do you have for me?"
"How much of our classes will we miss?" Remus asked.
Dumbledore chuckled to himself about this young boy's priorities. There's one in every class, he thought to himself. "That depends on how you transform," he replied. "I cannot say how much class you will be missing each month without seeing how you will transform."
Slightly deflated, Remus sank back in his seat. He wanted to have a normal life, or as normal as he could have, and it would be months before he could even assess if that was a possibility.
"That said," Dumbledore said. "I have spoken to your professors, and they have agreed that you will not fall behind in any classes based on complications with your lycanthropy. So while you will have to miss classes, I'm sure, you will be able to maintain your grades." Remus breathed a sigh of relief at this and nodded.
After a beat, Dumbledore released the two students to their dorms. They silently followed Professor McGonagall to Gryffindor Tower, each person lost in their own thoughts. When they arrived in the Gryffindor common room, the professor bid the two students good night and made her way to her room. Lily and Remus stood awkwardly in the common room before they hugged and headed to their respective dormitories.
