The next day
It was just morning, a new day of school. Shilo entered inside with a determined look on her face. Today would be the day she would get approval from Sera and the elders to allow her to go to earth for a single day and return to heaven when she was done. She just needed to talk to Michael to set up an appointment, and she would be ready.
She recited her lines like she was practicing her lines for a play. "Michael, Sera, Elders. I request one day to visit Earth." She reacted herself. "Michael, Sera, Elders. I request one day to visit Earth.' 'Michael, Sera, Elders. I request one-."
"Shilo!!" Camael's voice cut her off as he came with a massive stack of papers on top of documents. "I'm glad you are here!! I got a full deck of reports from the teachers that must be sent to!! " He wiggled a bit due to the weight he was holding.
"Okay? And?" Shilo raised an eyebrow.
"And I got a lot of work today!! Ms. Moonlight is sick, and I haven't found time to get a substitute!!" Camael explained. "I must take over her job today, but these reports must go to Michael! Can you go there and take them to him!?"
Shilo blinked. Out of today, he wants her to take these reports to Michael. "But my class-" Shilo tried to reason with him that she couldn't leave her duties as a teacher.
"I'll tell them that history is on pause for today!!" Camael answered for her. "Thank you!!" He then placed the stack in her arms, almost causing her to lose her balance due to the weight, and he rushed off.
Shilo stood still, watching him leave her. "Are you kidding?!!! " she yelled, annoyed that the principal was placing his job on her. She just groaned, giving up arguing. "Well, I can tell them on my way there." At least while there, she can speak to Michael about her request.
She turned around, returned to where she had come from, and walked to the school's entrance. Once outside, she spread her wings and flew up. She kept the reports close to her to avoid letting them fly off as she made her way to the angelic court building. She failed to notice that something else was happening there simultaneously.
Inside, Shilo walked carefully with the reports in her arms. She was in the hallway leading to Michael's office, where he would wait for them and review them. The hallway was empty, with no angels in sight but the sound of her heels echoing.
"Lord, these are heavy." She strained, but the weight was too much for her to hold on to. After a step forward, she stopped, set the reports down, and sat on the floor to catch her breath. Her arms were tired from carrying that many, and her legs were in pain from putting her weight down on her heels.
"…Whether or not a soul in Hell can be redeemed into the heavenly realm via means of this 'Hazbin Hotel.' Princess Morningstar?" Sera's voice was heard, almost like it came from open spaces.
But it catches Shilo's attention, breaking her out of her tired state. But one word caught her ears. "Morningstar? Isn't that Luci's last…?" She mumbled. Since when has anyone shared the same name as Lucifer?
She tried to search for the source of Sera's voice. And to her luck, she spotted a small opening door that led to the courtroom. It seems like there is a meeting there, and Sera is there.
Deep inside, a spark of curiosity flicks inside her. But she shook her head. She knew better than to get involved with others's matters; she must not let curiosity drive her. The archangels told her that curiosity is a plague, a disease that can lead to rebellion. But it had been so long since she last heard of Morningstar, and it drove her curious side wild. She crawled to the door, only to take a peek and return to her task.
She peeks inside and sees the meeting. Sera is on top, Emily is beside her, and the angel court is with them. She also sees Lute and a massive angel with golden wings and a demon horn on his head beside her. And on the bottom are two young women, one that she has never met or seen before.
One is short, almost the same height as Shilo, and her skin is gray. Her hair is long and white with a purple streak on the bottom; she wore a red bow on the back of her hair. Her eyes are yellow, but not like Lute's, and she has an eye patch. She wears an oddly red shirt, a gray skirt, purple thigh stockings, white flat shoes, and purple gloves.
The woman beside her was tall. Her skin was white, with a little button nose and red cheeks. Her eyes were red, too. Her hair was long and golden, tied in a double ponytail. She wore a red suit, a black bow tie, red pants, and white and black shoes. Seeing her hair and cheeks reminded her of Lucifer, as if she resembled him.
"She looks a little like..." she whispered. Did Lucifer have a daughter, or was this his descendant?
The red woman sighed. "Thank you, Seraphim." She fumbled with her cards. Then, stand up from her seat and clear her throat to speak. "Webster's dictionary defines redemption as-"
"Objection!" The demon-horned angel interrupted. "Lame and unoriginal."
Shilo let out a groan, rubbing her face, and glared between the cracks. "What is that egomaniac doing here?" She knew who this was—Adam, the first man created. She once had the opportunity to meet him, wanting to welcome him to heaven. But as the years went by, he became very demanding and full of himself. "I can't believe they allowed that pathetic excuse of a human being in Heaven."
"We have a patron right now who is making incredible progress." The blonde hair woman implored.
"Who?" Adam asked, his arms crossed, and leaned down against the stand.
"Angel Dust." She answered.
"Oh yeah, the porn demon," Adam remembered him. "He's totally worth being redeemed." He blew a raspberry as Lute stared at him.
"Well, if you know so much." The blonde woman stated. "What do you think it takes to get into heaven?" She questioned him.
"Uhmm.." Adam started to look nervous. "W-w-well..uh," he stammered as the court looked at each other.
Shilo watched him look nervous, just like the rest of the court. He doesn't know what can get a soul into heaven. That's silly; all angels understand what it takes to get into heaven: doing good deeds, understanding God, and being good. It's Zephyr's job to guide souls so they will come to heaven.
But the very idea of a demon getting into heaven? Impossible; demons are evil creatures who fail to follow God's grace and are monsters with no heart. They wouldn't understand how things work here and care about others. Nor would they know what it takes to be a better person.
She resumed watching the court and saw the purple woman take a golden paper that appeared before her.
"Act selfless; don't steal; stick it to the man." She read and set it down with a glare. "Are you fucking serious?" She asked.
"Uh, yeah," Adam replied with a careless tone. "Sure got me here, didn't it?" He let out a nervous laugh. "Right, Sera?" He asked Sera.
"He was the first human soul in heaven," Sera assured.
Shilo stammered and could hardly understand what they were talking about. "First human soul!?" She yelled, not loudly, to avoid getting caught. "Oh yeah! Give this embarrassment a special treatment because he was the first man on Earth!" She rolled her eyes and crossed her arms.
As the spying orb appeared, Shilo peaked again. The orb revealed what looked to be a nightclub with demons dancing and drinking, and heaven knows what. The orb focused on spider demons in white and pink, dressed quite revealingly, and with another demon with one eye. It was the first time Shilo had ever seen a demon, and they looked so much different than the angels here. There were no angel wings, no halo, and they were dressed in very dark clothes.
"These are the demons?" Shilo whispered. Her eyes focused on the spider; only he and the one-eyed woman were not alone. With them is a black and red cat with red wings, not like Shilo's, and a long tail with a feather on the end—a black snake with yellow stripes, pink eyes, and wearing a giant top hat. And last is a tiny woman with one eye dressed like a maid.
She watched him talk about something bothering him, mostly looking drained. Shilo could understand him; she knew what it felt like to be drained. Her eyes widened when she saw the drugs—the kind that didn't look so good. She glared at the one-eyed woman, not liking how she was trying to tempt him. Soon, everyone was drinking alcohol.
"Heavenly people, what more do you need to see?" Adam interrogated. "The porn star chose a night of debauchery. That's not a soul worthy of being in heaven!" He added while Lute crossed her arms and smirked.
"Uhn, objection!" The blonde woman testified, catching everyone's attention. "Are you really telling me you've never had a drink with friends at the end of a hard day?"
"Uh, we don't have hard days? It's fucking heaven, bitch." Adam responded. "You seriously going to sit there and pretend like this behavior is ok?" He asked, which caused the woman to growl while the woman beside her widened her eyes.
Shilo crossed her arms, glaring at Adam. "Say that when you spend your whole life working in a classroom full of children and teaching the same thing repeatedly." She scoffed. She can't believe he is saying this.
"Angel will make good decisions. Come on!" the blonde woman begged. "We have to keep watching! Please?" Shilo frowned. This woman reminded her so much of Lucifer.
Sera sighed. She turned to Emily. "Yeah, I don't know." She whispered.
"Yeah, let's give him a chance," Emily whispered.
After a brief silence, Sera nodded. "Very well, the court will allow it." She declared.
Shilo watched the woman cheer, which caused her to laugh a bit. She returned to the orb, which it forced on the demons, and had another round of alcohol. She wondered how they managed not to get so drunk and tippy. The spider demon took the cup away from the tiny demon, saying she had too much.
Then, the small woman began scraping cups off the table into the trash, and the spider had to go after her while she went to the cleaning closet. Only for the one-eyed woman to get in his way, she watched the two talk and left. He picked up the tiny woman, and she started to cry. He tried to calm her down, something that only a caring person would do.
Seeing this brought a thought to her. She was told the hell Lucifer made is an awful place for awful people and evil people who love to kill. Yet this one demon acts so selfless. "I...I don't understand," she whispered.
She continued watching, unable to take her eyes off the orb showing the whole scene. She may have chuckled a little when she saw the snake demon trying to flirt with the one-eyed woman only to fail. She felt terrible for him. She saw the spider look scared when he pointed to a tall moth demon dressed seductively; he must be a mighty demon if he feared this one.
The tiny woman lept off and started to head to the moth demon, and the spider demon started going after her. He managed to grab her, but the moth demon noticed him. Their conversation was unpleasant until she saw him standing up to the moth. She was surprised to see him speaking to the moth when he mentioned his friends; he must care about them so strongly.
She gasped softly once she saw the smoke turn into a chain and pulled him harshly. But the spider didn't show fear, only strength and bravery. It confused her even more. Here is a demon with more power, and he is resisting. She covered her mouth, seeing him getting slapped hard and causing him to drop the tiny demon.
She glared harshly at the scene, at the moth demon. Sure, it is hell, a perfect place for monsters like him, but when she watched him threaten the spider, it's like a sense of protectiveness enters her system, and she wants to go down there and show him what absolute hell is for him. At least the spider has friends who are proud of him. She did get a laugh when she watched the tiny demon pull a tuft of his fur off; it was straight-up karma, she thought.
"See! He did everything on your checklist!!" The blonde woman explained. "He was selfless; he stopped Niffty from stealing, and he stuck it to that moth guy!!" She boasted, arms wide open.
"Uhhh..." Adam nervously fumbled. Turning his head, he saw the court staring at him. He then stammered. "Then, then why isn't he here then? Hm?" He asked.
"Yeah, why isn't he here?" Emily asked.
The court all mumbled together. Shilo thought it over. If he did all the things Adam listed, why didn't he get summoned here? Maybe it wasn't enough; he needed to put his faith in God and perform a good deed. It could get him in, and perhaps his friends in, too, if they did his act. But the look on everyone's face said otherwise.
"Wait, none of you know what gets someone into heaven?" The blonde woman questioned. Shilo blinked. Of course they all do, right? But that's what the archangels and Sera told her. Was it just a white lie?
"This questioning stops now," Sera interjected. "We know when a soul arrives; we know when they pass divine judgment." During this, Emily summoned the list. "It is our job to ensure these souls are safe," Sera added.
Emily looked at the note; all three were crossed out. The three tasks that Adam wrote.
"But she was right, Sera ." Emily sings, showing the list to Sera. " She showed us a soul can improve."
Emily leaped out of her seat, hovering the orb over everyone who showed the event. "He saw the light, Sera ." Emily stared at Sera with a pleading look. " Check all the boxes that you said would."
She flew down, singing to the court. "Prove a person deserves a second chance. Now we turn our backs, no second glance?"
"It's not as simple as you think ." Sera sings as Emily looks up at her and flies up to her. " Not everything is spelled in ink." Sera took Emily's hands.
"It's not fair, Sera." The blonde woman sings, glaring at her.
The purple woman placed a hand on her shoulder. "Careful, Charlie. Keep a cool head." She sings.
"No !" Charlie pushed her shoulder away, glaring at Sera still. " Don't you care, Sera ?" Only for Sera to stare with empathy. " That just because someone is dead doesn't mean they can't resolve to change their ways."
The orb shifted with images of the demons. "Turn the page. Escape infernal blaze." The orb behind her changed into an image of fire.
"I'm sure you wish it could be so ." Sera sings. " But there's a lot that you don't know."
"What are we even talking about ?" Lute sings, catching everyone's attention. " Some crack-whore who fucked up already?"
Charlie glared at Lute. Shilo mirrored her action.
"He blew his shot like the cocks in his mouth ." Behind Lute, Adam gave them the middle finger while motioning his hands like he stroked something with his mouth open. " This discussion is senseless and petty." She stands up and puts her mask on, with demon horns like Adam's.
The two flew down to Charlie's level. "There's no question to be posed. He's unholy; case closed ." The two sing together. " Did you forget that hell is forever?" They landed on top of the orb, which shows the image of demons on fire.
"A man only lives once. We'll see you in one month ." Adam sings; Charlie angrily glares at him. He flew down to her level. " Gotta say, I can't wait to."
"Adam." Sera cautioned him. Emily noticed it.
"Come down and exterminate you!" Adam finished, leaning close to Charlie's face as her eyes turned yellow and red horns grew from her forehead.
Emily heard it. "Wait!" She yelled.
"What!?" Shilo shouted. Exterminate?
"Shit!" Adam cussed.
"What are you saying ?" Emily flew down to the floor. " Let me get this straight ." She stares at the orb, at the demons on fire. " You go down there and kill those poor souls?"
"You didn't know?" Charlie asked, confused that a seraphim like Emily didn't know this.
"Whoops!" Adam shrugged.
"Guess the cat's out of the bag," Lute sings.
"What's the big deal?" Adam asks mockly.
turned her attention to Sera. "Sera, tell me that you didn't know." She pleased.
"I thought, since I'm older. It's my load to shoulder." Sera admitted she knew this.
"No!" Emily gasped with her hands on her head.
"You have to listen. It was such a hard decision ." Sera explained, flying out of her seat and landing in front of Emily. " I wanted to save you; the anguish it takes to ." She takes her hands. " Do what was required."
In Sera's eyes, the flames reflected as she forced a smile. Shilo could not believe this.
"To think that I admired you ." Emily glared at her with such betrayal. She pulled away from her, flying in the air. An eye appears in her chest, and her halo opens eyes in the middle. " Well, I don't need your condescension. I'm not a child to protect ." She flew before the court, staring down. " Was talk of virtue just pretension ?" Emily flew back on the floor while the orb revealed an image of Sera with a demon. " Was I too naive to expect you to heed the morals you're purveying?" Adam faked a gag at this.
"That's what the fuck I've been saying!" Charlie sings to Emily, who takes her hand, and the two fly up on the orb, landing on top.
"If hell is forever, then Heaven must be a lie!" The two sing, glaring at all the angels.
"Emily!" Sera gasped.
"If angels can do whatever and remain in the sky ." The two continued. Adam and Lute glared at the two. They leap off the orb. " The rules are shade of gray when you don't do as you say. When you make the wretched suffer just to kill them again."
The orb shows an image of an angel dressed like Lute and kills a demon, revealing it to the court. The angels are shown horrified, not knowing this as well.
Shilo covered her mouth in shock and disgust; her eyes were glued to the scene.
"I was told not to trust in angels." Charlie sings, turning her focus on the purple woman.
Then Adam came. "by her?" He asked.
Then Lute came along. "Ha! She should know." She placed her elbow on her shoulder.
"We should go." Vaggie sings.
"No! Don't you see ?" Charlie took her hands in hers. " We've come so close ." They watched everyone in the room—the angels, all talking together, discussing this. At the same time, Emily refuses to look at Sera. " Look at them fighting. They're at each other's throats."
"Don't you act all high and mighty ." Adam stepped in. " Did you ever think your little girlfriend might be a liar?" He walked away from them.
Vaggie looks nervous. "Don't, Adam, please!" She begged
"What's the fuss? Why hide the fact that you're an angel ?" Adam sings. Lute grabbed Vaggie's arm, away from Charlie, as they stood before the orb. " Just like us?"
The Orb shows an image of Vaggie with short hair and a dress like Lute. Charlie's eyes widen in disbelief as a shadow overcasts her and opens a pair of angel wings. She fell on her knees.
Shilo, on the other hand, was shaking on her spot.
Sera was panting, taking in everything that had happened. She slowly inhaled as she rubbed her forehead. "I'm sorry. But this court finds that there is no evidence souls in hell can be redeemed." She disclosed. Emily resumes in her spot next to Sera, frowning sadly.
"Oh, fuck, yes!!" Adam cheered. "I win! Suck it, bitches!!" He gives Charlie and Vaggie two middle fingers. His voice has gone sinister. "You better save the dates cunts, 'cause we're coming to your hotel first." He then snapped his fingers.
"What?!" Charlie gasped as the portal that led to hell appeared. "No!! No!! You can't-"
"You...Motherfuc-" Vaggie was cut off as the two were sucked in, returning. The portal closed.
"Charlie! Don't give up on this!! I'll figure something out, I promise!!" Emily yelled.
"That was uncalled for, Adam." Sera hissed, angry by his actions.
"yeah. But did you see the looks on their fucking faces? It was..d-d-," he stammered, seeing Sera's expression. He knew he said too much already. "Sorry.."
All at once, the angels, including Adam and Lute, opened their wings and left the courtroom.
Shilo hides behind the door just when Adam and Lute leave, not even noticing her presence. The two leave the hallway until she is alone. Once she is sure they are gone, she peeks through the open door and sees Sera and Emily alone. She watched the two talk.
Emily stared down with her arms crossed. "Extermination of human souls!?" she questioned Sera, her eyes opening. She turned around to face her. "Demon or not, there is no reason to be doing this!!"
"They were uprising, Emily!" Sera explained; her eyes opened as Emily had. "It is my position as the head Seraphim to protect our people at all costs." The eyes closed. Sera placed her hands on Emily's shoulder. "And it's your position to keep them happy and joyful."
"How can I bring joy when I now know we are bringing misery to thousands of innocent people?" Emily asked.
"Heaven needs us, Emily. Everyone looks to us, and we can't doubt ourselves or worry about the fates of demons when we have our own souls to protect." Sera concluded. Emily stares at her with concern, seeing the fear in Sera's eyes. "Please..if you start to question, you could end up like Lucifer. Fallen." She added. "I couldn't bear to see you suffer that fate." She held her hands. "So please, let me worry about this, ok?" She kissed her forehead. "I'm sorry."
Emily looked at the list; her fingers touched it.
With Shilo, she slowly stood up, walking backward as she panted heavily. Her back hit the wall, forcing her to stop her track. She slid down to the floor while still panting. She was shaking, her breath was cracking, and her heart was beating hard and loud. She can hear it through her ears. She placed her hand on her heart.
What she saw, what she heard, and what she witnessed. All was too much for her to understand—the exterminations, those two guests, those demons, and how Emily didn't know this. Was everything the archangels told her a lie? A forbidden piece of history that she overlooked? A secret the seraphim never told her? It was all too much for her to take in and process.
The floor was covered in frost, touching the wall behind her. She tried to calm her breathing down, but it didn't work. The frost kept growing till it hit the ceiling.
Panicked, she quickly grabbed the reports on the floor and dashed to Michael's office. During this time, she can't get the event off her head.
