Chapter 6 – Fallout and Friends
"Master Harry being all Slytherin on his enemies."
"Not enemies. Just obstacles in my life. They don't rate enough to be enemies."
"Harry my boy. Are you up there?" A new voice called. A voice that he didn't want to hear for a long time.
"Now Dobby." Harry said as the head of a wizard in long garish robes just peaked up the stairs determined to talk to him. Harry waved and was gone before the wizard could do anything.
The house in Galway was set back from the beach. Although the size made it more of a manor house with all that comes with it. There were at least ten bedrooms with more than half of them having an en suite. Harry and Dobby had been there before and between Dobby and the Goblins it was now ready for them to move in. Dobby had popped them to the beach side of the wrap around porch. Harry stopped for a moment to take in the view of the waves crashing onto the beach. He closed his eyes and listened to all the sounds around him. Sniffing the air he could smell the salt tang. He smiled. This is what home should feel and smell like he thought. Not like pine cleaner and those smelly candle his aunt would burn all the time. This smelled like nature.
The house was up on a hill overlooking the beach about a quarter mile away. The other side of the house faced a long winding drive. The Goblins had protected the place with about every kind of ward available. Anti muggle, anti scrying, anti dark mark, anti you name it. He even had them include phoenix and house elf protection. The only way to reach the property was for Harry to add you to the book and only he and Dobby knew where that book was hidden.
Standing on the porch Harry cleared his mind like the exercises he had been doing now for a while. He reached out and could feel the nature all around him. He noticed mineral deposits in the surrounding grounds. Even down to the water front where he could pick out rocks that had been pushed onto the shore by the waves. He felt a few man made items in the sand. One looked, or felt, like a ring of some kind. The lessons from Daphne were helping him with his family magic.
That memory did cause him to blush. That had been an embarrassing lesson. Harry had been advancing so fast that Daphne had offered to test his shields. She did let him know that this might be a little soon but he always seemed to pick up on the practical side of magic quickly. She entered his mind and Harry tried to hold her in his waiting room. He was doing well when she distracted him by poking him in the side. This brought up images of Dudley and his gang 'Harry Hunting' and the broken rib he suffered. Daphne pulled out quickly and apologized. Harry stopped her. Telling her this is what needed to happen and no big deal. He could see she wasn't going to let it go. He had told her he would be shut of the Dursleys soon. She nodded and suggested a peace offering. Harry tried to tell her it wasn't necessary but finally relented and let her pull him into her mind. There she showed him the girls dorm when Pansy had teased her about having no chest. She even looked into the mirror while she was standing there in her bra. Then he was back where they were sitting outside.
Both of them had red faces. He had thanked her and promised never to reveal anything. He also said that Pansy was a cow and Daphne was perfect the way she was. This had deepened both of their blushes. Harry shook himself out of the past and appreciated the present.
Harry was surprised how much he was enjoying his time with the Slytherin ice princess. She was funny, sarcastic, and cared. She really cared that Harry learned and would call him out when he slacked off. Not like a Hermione rant, just a reminder that the harder he worked the more it would help him in the future. That was all it took. Harry was driven to prove he could do it. He also wanted to prove to Cyrus that Daphne was up to teaching him.
His mental musings were interrupted at half eleven when a Gringotts owl found Harry on the porch. He relieved the owl of the envelope it was carrying. Dobby popped in with a plate of bacon and water and the bird drank and took several pieces of bacon before flying off. Harry opened the envelope and pulled out a large sheaf of papers. Reading the cover letter Harry smiled and handed it to Dobby. This still surprised Dobby that his Master Harry would share all his financial information. Dobby read over the letter and made sure that nothing had been missed from their meetings. The single page summed up what Griphook had been doing for the Potter accounts. There was also a portkey to his room at Privet drive so he could watch the final removal of the people living in his house.
When Harry arrived he made a lot of noise in his room with Dobby. He wanted to be sure the Dursleys knew he was there. Vernon charged the open door again only to bounce off the barrier, causing his already broken nose to begin bleeding again as Vernon let out a howl worthy of any werewolf. At that moment a Goblin Harry didn't recognize arrived beside Harry.
"I am ClawHammer. I will be your guard for the time you are here. Lord Potter." The Goblin announced and bowed. Harry and Dobby returned the bow.
"Thank you ClawHammer. If you would watch my back I would like to go outside and see the chaos. Can you look more human for the non-magicals outside?" With that said ClawHammer morphed into a tall muscular man with dark short cropped hair and a dark security guard uniform complete with dark glasses and a nightstick.
"Nice. Let's go see the carnage." Harry looked to Dobby who smiled and disillusioned himself. The guard walked out first pushing the largest of the Dursleys out of the way so Harry could walk down the stairs safely. Outside was complete chaos as Harry had expected. Dudley had enlisted his gang to help and they were handling Petunias delicate knick-knacks with their usual care. Petunia was yelling at them and Dudley was continually whining about needing to move. In addition he was hungry, which was his usual montra.
They all turned as Harry walked out the front door. Looking around Harry noticed almost all the neighbors along with some media people being held back by the bobbies. The murderous looks from everyone except the bobbies and media were a balm to Harrys soul. The Goblin guard put himself between Harry and the group working to empty the house. Harry spotted a reporter with the Surry Comet logo on her shirt. When the young reporter saw the security guard she perked up and noticed Harry striding towards her. Her notepad ready she started firing off questions. Harry ignored them as he approached.
"There. Now that we don't have to yell, let me introduce myself. I am Harry Potter and I own this house. I was just informed of that fact recently and I have taken measures to remove the people that have been squatting and not paying rent for 14 years." Harry said as his lead in. The reporter was writing rapidly getting all the facts she could.
"The neighbors claim you are a hooligan and should be locked up. Why is that?" She asked.
"They have been misinformed. My cousin, the largest of the boys over there." Harry pointed to Dudley. "and his parents have been running a smear campaign about me since I was left with them 14 years ago. My parents died while protecting me from terrorists and I was the only one left alive. Those people" Harry pointed to the Dursleys. "Were forced to take me in and have made my life a living hell. I have been worked harder than any slave, starved, beaten, and confined to a small room with locks on the door. I just recently found my parents wills and discovered I owned the house and against the original agreement those people stopped paying rent when my parents died. I'm sure they thought since I was living there it was their right not to pay. I also discovered they had been stealing from my family money that could have been used for university but now is gone. I just want them out so I can live in peace." Harry stuck to the story they had agreed on.
"Wow. That sounds horrible. Didn't anyone notice a problem? What about friends or the school?" She asked.
"Dudley made sure I didn't have any friends. He and his gang would beat up anyone that tried to get close to me. Vernon, my uncle, was friends with the headmaster of my school and informed him that I was 'unstable and not to be believed'"
"I'm sorry. I really don't want to say anymore. If they leave and never talk to me again that will be enough for me. My legal representatives will deal with the rest." Harry said. He tried to turn away but she had one last question.
"Aren't you a little young to be without a guardian?" She asked.
Turning back to answer that one. "I have been emancipated. I have full rights as an adult where it's needed." Pointing to the front of number four Privet drive. "And this is needed."
Harry moved away so he could watch. Looking at his watch he only had a couple of minutes before noon. At that point the Goblins would remove what was left in the house. The Dursleys were frantically running in and out trying to get everything they owned into a borrowed truck from Gruinings. This was even better Harry thought. Now Uncle would have to deal with the fall out from work too. He smiled and quietly mentioned this to his invisible elf. Dobby had kept a hand on Harrys knee so Harry would know where he was. Harry could feel the hand moving as Dobby laughed.
A bell rang and the Goblin group moved in blocking access to the house from the Dursleys. They were pushed aside and the group of six men looking Goblins entered the house and started moving the rest of the Dursleys belongings to the front lawn. Harry had to laugh when one of them spilled the drawers from his Aunts dresser and her under things fell all over the ground. There was much screaming from Petunia and Vernon as the men tossed the things back into the drawer and forced it shut with several garments still hanging out. Petunia was red and started hyperventilating as the neighborhood got a good laugh at the mostly boring items. When the men had held up a see-thru red teddy Harry could almost see the collective shudder from Dudley and the crowd. Harry felt just as nauseous as everyone else.
The last items to be pulled out were the items from Harrys room, including the door with the locks and the cat flap. They brought it to Harry explaining loudly that this was all taken from the room he said was his. Holding the door up next to Harry for a few good photos Harry nodded that it was his door and yes they actually pushed food through the cat flap when they locked him in his room. This caused the photographer to run around the house to find bars on his window. That would make for an interesting addition to the paper.
With that Harry walked away from Number 4 Privet Drive and the Dursleys forever. He would have Griphook take care of selling the house. If they couldn't get enough for it Harry would donate it to the fire brigade to practice on. That he would watch if it came to pass.
Back on the porch of his Galway home Harry sat and just enjoyed the warm afternoon. Daphne wanted to meet this afternoon and he had suggested this place. After she heard the security of the place she relented and would allow Dobby to pop her here when it was time. Harry ran through the exercises and found that his defenses were getting stronger and his ability to multi task was getting better. He could scan the surrounding grounds and keep his defenses on high alert.
There was a pop and Daphne was on the porch with him. Seeing him concentrating so hard she decided to surprise him. She attacked his mind, not as bad as Snape would have but there was the element of surprise and a reasonable amount of force. Their last session Harry had told her to take off the kid gloves. She had and found he was doing much better than she thought. This surprise attack was the first she had ever tried. She got past his external defenses easily and was not pleased. Then his secondary defenses kicked in. She found herself locked into a tiger cage in a thick jungle with several wild cats snarling and stalking around the cage. She was terrified. Every time she tried to back away another wild cat would slash their giant claws at side the cage she backed into. They never touched her but they didn't have to.
The cats all laid down at once and the cage vanished. Harry appeared before her offering his hand to her to help her up. She took it and stood, looking into his eyes as the jungle around them morphed and changed into the seaside porch. She realized she was out of his mind and he was leading her to the nearest seat.
"I'm sorry. Are you ok?" Harry asked.
"I'm fine. How did you do that?" She asked.
"I decided keeping someone out wasn't enough. If they attacked my mind I was going to launch a counter attack. When I realized it was you I stopped the automatic attack. Are you sure you are ok? You look a little pale?" Harry was concerned. She really did look pale. That is more pale than usual for her fair skin. Daphne took a deep breath and slowly let it out. She was feeling better. At that moment Dobby popped in and put a cup of hot chocolate in her hands.
"Drink Mistress Greenie. Dobby special recipe. Make yous feel all betters." Dobby said and popped away again.
"He must like you. He didn't bring me any." Harry quipped with a smile on his face. She sipped the chocolate and he could see the first sip brought color back to her face.
"This is amazing. Thank you Dobby." She said to the air.
A very faint "Yous most welcomes mistress Greenie" could be heard. They sat in silence for a while as she finished the chocolate and couldn't believe how good she now felt. Setting the empty cup down she turned to Harry.
"I think you have that part down pretty well. You say that is automatic? How did you manage that?"
"I was reading a non-magical book on mastering your mind, or something like that, and it talked about triggers. I read it many times over and built some triggers, or traps, in my defenses. The outer layer will only put up a mild defense. That will make the person feel like my mind isn't protected. When they move in deeper the traps will spring. Like the big cats and the cage."
"By the way you say it I'm guessing there are more?" Daphne asked. Harry nodded. "Would you show me some of them? I'm curious about how they are built. You don't have to if you don't want to."
Harry thought for a moment and nodded. "Come in and wait for me to find you." Daphne entered Harrys mind and in a second he was beside her. He took her hand and led her around the first trap and showed her the trigger. She had stumbled blindly into it, as would most magicals. He led her deeper and showed her the next level. It was truly terrifying. The person would be wading through knee deep mirky water with several large snakes swimming around them. If they tried to move faster the water would get deeper. She shook her head to clear her vision. Harry pointed back and led her out of the traps.
She blinked as the world came back into view. Looking at Harry she could see concern on his face. She smiled. "I would love for my father to test you sometime. I think he would pee his pants at the second level." she thought for a moment and her eyes flew open wide. "There are more levels aren't there?" Harry smirked and shrugged non committally, he wasn't going to give out all his secrets. Daphne appreciated that and didn't push.
"How about we change the lesson for today?" Harry suggested.
"I'm listening."
"How about I show you how to pick up rocks?" Harry had been working hard on his magics and for some reason he wanted to share it with Daphne. She had shared her family magic and it was helping him with his.
"So you are going to finally explain that one?" She asked with a smirk.
"I mean we can just go walk on the beach and get you some pretty rocks." Harry chuckled at her huff.
"Take my hand and let's see if I can direct you to see what I see." Harry held out his hand and she took it. "Please don't let go. I would hate to have to explain this to your father." He seemed so serious Daphne just nodded. "Close your eyes and open your mind to the area around us."
She did and kind of felt stupid. Then her hand warmed in his and the world around her came into view in her mind. She looked around. Harry was beside her but he had a glowing gold aura surrounding him. He pointed to something and she looked to see something bright in the path ahead of them. They walked to it and she didn't stumble. The world was there and transparent at the same time. When they got to the pretty rock Harry took her hand and pushed it into the ground and she scooped the stone up. Daphne opened her eyes and she could see a rather dull rock. It was almost perfectly round and about the size of a golf ball. It was also lighter than she would have thought it should be.
Harry put his hand over hers and covered the rock. Nodding he closed his eyes and she did too. That colorful world opened up again. She could see inside the rock in their hands and it was sparkly inside. Harry put his finger at the edge of the rock and pushed a little magic into it and the rock split open. In her minds eye it was as vibrant as the rest of the world around her. Opening her eyes she could see the sparkling points of purple and lavender that were inside the rock.
"It's a geode. Now you know how to pick up rocks" Harry said. Daphne was so amazed that she couldn't even think of a snappy come back. This had never happened to her.
"It's beautiful. But how?" She asked.
"We pulled it out of the ground. It was about six inches deep right here." Harry pointed to the edge of the trail. Daphne leaned closer and the ground looked untouched. The curious look on her face was precious to Harry.
He leaned over and ran his finger through the ground like it was water. He then pushed his hand into the ground up to his elbows. "Want to see something really cool?"
Daphne nodded. "As if this wasn't cool enough."
"Close your eyes and see if you can still see like you did when we were holding hands." Harry prompted her. She did and he could see her struggling. Finally she relaxed and nodded. "Keep watching." Harry said. He was on one knee and he just sunk into the ground until he was gone. This shocked Daphne and she opened her eyes.
"Harry! Harry! Dobby. Harry needs help." She screamed.
With a pop Dobby was beside her. "Master Harry bes fine. Close eyes and see." Pointing towards the tree on the side of the path. She did as instructed and she could see Harry sitting under ground waving at her from near the tree. She opened her eyes and he wasn't there. Then he started rising from the ground and soon was standing beside the tree. Blinking she couldn't believe her eyes. Walking over to him she poked him in the chest. He was real. Looking down she could see the ground was undisturbed. There was no evidence of what he did.
"How?"
"It's part of the Potter magics. I can reach in and get the raw materials I need. I can go as deep as I want too." He said as he sunk to his waist and then back up on his feet. She could see how excited he was about this.
"What else can you do?" She asked then stopped. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have asked that. It's" She looked like she wanted to cry. "I know better. You never ask about"
"Daphne. Stop please. Curiosity is good. I don't have to tell you if I don't want to. So no problem." Harry tried to sooth her. She was not that upset but he could tell it would take a minute.
"Do you want to try yourself?" he asked. She nodded and knelt on the ground. Her fingers scraped against the hard packed earth but never entered.
"Try closing your eyes. Maybe of you see it it will be easier." Harry suggested. She did and the world came back into that strange view. It was like the world was all different colors and the ground was just a line drawing. She could see under it like it was water. Reaching forward she tried to do what Harry had and run her fingers through the ground. It felt like mud as she pushed and her finger passed through the ground and came out the other side. Opening her eyes she could see where her finger had made tracks through the ground. They were not as deep as Harrys but you could definitely see where she had touched it.
"That's good. Your fingers went much deeper than the little furrows in the dirt."
"How can you breath under there?" Daphne asked suddenly realizing he had been under ground for a couple of minutes before. "Or did you hold your breath?"
"I don't know how but I can breath while under there. I found out the hard way." Harry said.
"You got to deep and had to breath, right?" Daphne said with a gleam in her eyes.
Harry gave her his signature smirk. "Got it in one. Scared the living daylights out of me too. After that I used a guide for a while to get used to determining how deep I would go."
"Dobby right?" Harry nodded.
"I'm curious but I won't ask. It's actually considered very impolite to ask about another families magic. Thank you for sharing this with me. I can't even put into words. Just to be able to see the world like you do is a treasure." Daphne said so sincerely it made Harrys heart break.
"We should take the rest of the day off. Let's walk by the water. I haven't been down there yet." Harry suggested. He turned and held out his elbow and Daphne put her hand in the crook of his elbow and they walked to the beach.
The ocean was calm and the waves were gently lapping at the shore. They walked along in companionable silence. Harry reached out with his senses as he walked. This was something he had been working on. He led them to the spot he had seen from the porch and stopped.
"Can you see it?" Harry pointed to the ground in front of them. Daphne stopped and closed her eyes and he could see her struggle a little. Then her minds eye opened.
"It looks like a ring about six inches under the ground. Can you get it?" Harry nodded to her and reached down and straight into the beach. Up to his wrist and some more then he pulled back. When he pulled out Daphne saw the ground looked undisturbed. Harry opened his hand and there was a gold band with a single diamond in the center with two smaller rubies on either side.
Daphne took the offered ring and looked it over. "These are real gems aren't they?" Daphne asked. She had seen enough real stones and thought they were the real thing.
"Yes they are." Harry took it back and held it with both hands and closed his eyes. He smiled and then frowned and soon a tear formed in the corner of his eye.
"What's wrong?" she asked.
"Sorry. I just saw the life of the rings owners." Harry said.
"Can we return it?" Harry shook his head. He looked very sad to Daphne. "Why not?"
"They both passed on many years ago. They had a good life but had no children." Looking at the ring Harry shook his head again. Putting the ring in her palm he closed her fingers around it. "Keep it. It made them happy when they had it."
Daphne wanted to ask more but didn't. She had learned that Harry was sometimes a very private person so she didn't push. "Thank you." She took his offered arm and they walked down the beach.
The sun was getting lower in the sky as they walked back up the hill to the house. They had walked mostly in silence. The gentle lapping of the waves and the crunching of the beach under their shoes the only sounds.
"Thank you Daphne. That was very nice. I enjoy your company." Harry said.
"Thank you Harry. I enjoy your company too. That was a nice walk." Daphne said.
"I suppose I should have Dobby get you home. I don't want your father to worry."
"They are all gone for a few days. It's just me and the house elves." She said.
"Want to do something totally muggle?" Harry said a little to excited.
"You worry me Potter."
"Sorry. This is so muggle British but I'm almost certain you have never done it. You willing to take a walk on the wild side?" Harry said.
"Never done it. That's rich. Try me?" She said never one to back down from a dare.
"Dobby."
"Yes Master Harry Potter Sir." The excited elf said as he popping in next to them.
"You said there was a really good fish and chips shop in the town nearby? Would we need you to take us there? Also I would need my muggle money." Harry said.
"Fish and chips? What are you getting me into Potter." Daphne said.
"Only the best British food tradition there is Greengrass." He replied. Looking her over he realized her sun dress would fit in perfectly in the little town near by.
Dobby was back and handed Harry his wallet. Taking their hands he popped them into town in the middle of a park.
"The fishy place is just there. Not fars. Dobby be watching yous." and the elf was gone.
Harry offered Daphne his arm again and they walked down the path and out into a small city street. Cars and people were busy going this way and that. All heading where they were going. As they approached the scent of the food wafted over them. Harry sniffed the air and smiled.
"That's what I've been craving." Harry said
"That does smell really good." Daphne admitted. Her head was moving back and forth taking in everything. Harry was watching her as they walked.
"Have you ever been in a muggle town before?"
"No. It's so busy and there are so many of them." She said.
"Yup. Way more than us." Harry stopped her from stepping off the curb in front of a lorry.
"See the lights over there." he pointed to the traffic light. "The cars and us go on green and stop on red." Always look both ways. This is a small town but the cars hurt if you get hit by one.
"You know this from personal experience?" She quipped.
"Actually, yes." Harry said with a rather sad look on his face.
"I'm sorry. Were you ok?"
"I broke my arm. It took a couple of months to heal?" Harry said.
"Broken arm? Months?" Daphne looked at Harry and he shook his head and looked around them. There were muggles near enough that might hear. She didn't ask anymore questions now. She would ask more later.
The scent was getting stronger as they walked down the sidewalk. They walked into the chip shop and Harry led them to the counter. Daphne was looking everywhere when Harry pointed out the menu on the wall above the counter.
"Do you trust me to order?" Harry asked. She nodded. To stunned to say anything. Harry ordered two fish and chips dinners and two cokes. Daphne had no idea what they were getting but if it tasted even half as good as it smelled it would be amazing.
The food delivered and Harry paid in funny looking paper and metal coins. They carried the bags and drinks to a table in the corner. Harry set out the food and opened the bags.
"The fish is dipped in batter and fried in oil. The chips are potatoes sliced into this shape and also deep fried. These are fizzy drinks. I like malt vinegar on my fish and chips but some people dip them in tartare sauce. I got some if you wanted to try that too." Harry proceeded to splash vinegar on his food and ripped a piece of fish off with his fingers and popped it into his mouth. With a moan he chewed his food. Daphne was surprised that he was eating with his fingers but looking around everyone else was. She tried it and put a small piece in her mouth and chewed.
The flavors exploded in her mouth. She finished the first bite.
"Merlin that is good. How have I never had this before?" She exclaimed. Harry shushed her and took another bite following with a fry.
Daphne tried everything and it turned out she liked the malt vinegar just like Harry. The fizzy drink had her eyes popping out again. Harry could swear he heard her moan a time of two as she was eating. They finished eating and they started the walk back towards the park. Passing a stationary shop got her attention and she pulled Harry to the window for a better look. What Daphne saw amazed her. Harry took her into the store and picked up a basket.
She was amazed at the journals with all the papers fashioned into a book with blank or lined pages. When she got to the pens assortments she stopped.
"Are these self inking quills?" She whispered. Harry chuckeled.
"They are called pens or biros. They have ink in the middle. It will eventually run out but there are refills." At her questioning look Harry twisted one apart and showed her the inner pieces. She took one and tried it on the sample paper they had next to the display. Her flowing script looked like art compared to most of the scratch marks on the paper. She took a purple pen and wrote with it and was surprised it wrote in purple. She had a smile a mile wide when she looked at Harry.
Harry had picked up a few of the journals and now many pens in different colors as he followed her through the store. He was smiling at her amazement at what was normal to a muggle. When they had checked out all the journals and pens then they got to the greeting cards. She picked up a birthday card and opened it up and smiled.
"They really are clever aren't they?" She whispered to him. Harry nodded with a chuckle. When she had looked at everything Harry paid for their purchases and took the bag. They continued to the park in silence. Harry liked walking with her on his arm. When they were hidden from view Dobby popped in and the were back on his porch.
They had arrived just in time to catch the sunset over the ocean. They took a seat beside each other on the outdoor sofa and watched the large yellow ball in the sky slowly dip into the ocean and disappear.
"Thank you Harry. I should probably get home. Thank you for showing me how to pick up rocks. That was very impressive. The dinner was a new experience for me. Maybe sometime we can take Tory. She would freak out." She said as she stood to leave.
Harry opened the bag from the stationary store and took out two journals and a couple of pens and handed the bag to her.
"You didn't need to purchase all this for me. I mean thank you Harry." she leaned in and kissed him on his cheek. "You really are very different than I expected. I'm glad I got to know you."
"I would agree. I have enjoyed getting to know the ice princess of Slytherin." Harry smiled as Daphne smirked back. She then reached out and gave his arm a gentle smack. Harry laughed at that one.
"Good night Daphne. Sweet dreams" Harry said.
"Good Night Harry. Sweet dreams to you too."
