"Here we are… School…" said Futaba, feeling nervous. She and Urano had come to Shujin to fulfill the next item on the promise list – 'Go to school.' "I think my heart's gonna pop out of my chest…"
The school day had ended, but a lot of students were still milling around. Fortunately, that included a familiar face.
"Huh!?" exclaimed Makoto, surprised. "Wh-What are you doing here!?"
Futaba couldn't tell whether the student council president's reaction was directed at her or Urano. Regardless, the sisters were able to calm Makoto down and explain why they were there, prompting her to join their party and give the hacker a tour of the school.
First, they visited the cafeteria, which reminded Futaba of the time that she was the only kid to not get a pudding with her meal and when she mistakenly ate a strawberry covered in ketchup. Urano tried to cheer the hacker up by bringing up how she used to get scolded by teachers (among others) for spending her lunches reading instead of eating.
Then, they checked out the library – Urano's favorite place in school. The bookworm actually returned one book and checked out another while Makoto showed Futaba around. Nonetheless, when the hacker brought up how she'd been called a freak for memorizing all of the book title on a shelf after a glance, her older sister revealed that she also does that.
Futaba was really glad that Urano and Makoto were here. Her sister was able to sooth the hacker's sad memories, while the student council president cheered her up the rest of the way by pointing out that coming to Shujin in spite of those memories was progress.

Futaba felt so pumped up that she wanted to tackle another promise ('have a normal conservation with a stranger my age') immediately!
"…Actually, make that almost immediately," whispered Futaba, realizing something important. She looked at Makoto and asked a question. "Umm… can the next destination on our tour be the nearest bathroom?"
Makoto Niijima's PoV
While Futaba was 'picking flowers,' Makoto talked with Urano. They ended up mostly talking about Makoto – her recent uncertainty about what life path she should take, her friendship with Eiko, and even her father.
"When I was little, I told him I wanted to grow up to be a police officer like he was," said Makoto, smiling as she reminisced about her father. "He was glad to hear me say that, but quick to point out that he didn't want me doing something so dangerous. I had completely forgotten about that dream, to be honest…"
"It's an amazing goal," praised Urano.
"I suppose…" replied Makoto, resisting the urge to blush at her friend's compliment. "Although, I have no intention of working with the police. They're trying to stop the Phantom Thieves, and I can't exactly arrest myself."
"Is it really that big of a problem?" questioned Urano. "It's not like they've got any evidence. Besides, you could always work on other cases."
"Hm…" hummed Makoto, considering the bookworm's words. "Maybe. Either way, I need to reexamine what my goals for the future are, outside of just plain studying. You know, it feels like I remembered something important today thanks to you. I guess you could say my viewpoint has been broadened yet again."
"I'm glad our conservation was helpful," responded Urano. "And thanks again for giving Futaba a tour of Shujin. We both really appreciate it."

"You're welcome," said Makoto. "But enough about me… What are your goals for the future?"
"Becoming a librarian," answered the bookworm instantly. "Probably at a university, since that'd also let me read books and records that aren't accessible to the general public. Also, once I've saved up the money, I plan on travelling around the world and visiting major libraries and book sites. Like Venezia, where the legend Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press!"
Makoto chuckled. As expected from the world's biggest book-lover.
"I'm sure that you'll be a fantastic librarian in the future."

Once Futaba got back, we got to work on her next promise. Luckily, Mishima was still in school and was more than happy to have a conversation with Futaba.
(He also gave me information on some more potential Mementos targets. Apparently, Mishima had recruited two Phantom Thieves superfans called 'HeartMutt3' and 'ClairSword4' as Phan-Site moderators to focus more of his attention on searching for targets.)
As for the conversation itself… well… it was rough. Futaba called 'Nishima' an NPC to his face and explained her insulting reasoning for the description. As for Mishima, he asked if my younger sister ran a 'racy channel' online and joked about how he wouldn't mind if she did.
(Then again, maybe I shouldn't be surprised considering that both of them are awkward, slightly weird people who don't have much experience talking to friends.)
Nevertheless, Futaba declared the conversation a success. She triumphantly crossed both 'have a normal conservation with a stranger my age' and 'learn about my generation' off of her promise list.
I was so proud of my little sister and the progress she'd made!

Ooh! Was Mishima asking Futaba out? How would she respond? I was excited to find out.
"Going home," replied the hacker. She didn't even seem to realize that she'd been hit on, which made my excitement morph into pity for Mishima.
"O-oh… Right…" went Mishima. He turned to me. "W-well… um… what about you, Urano?"
Ah, I see. He's trying to cover up his embarrassment at being rejected by pretending he was just asking both of us, as friends. Don't worry Mishima… I'll save you from further humiliation. Nobody will know that you tried to ask Futaba out.
"Going home with Futaba," I answered, glancing at the hacker. "Are you ready?"
"Yep!" said Futaba, already starting to leave. "Come on, Big Sis. We're off!"
.
"Rejected twice in a row," sighed Mishima, unheard by either of us. "I really thought I had a chance, too…"

After school, Makoto pulled Urano aside to talk to her about Eiko and her shady boyfriend. Makoto didn't trust him, though she admittedly had never met him and only knew what Eiko had told her.
"…But that's why I want to meet him and find out for myself what kind of person he really is," Makoto told Urano. "And… If it's not too much to ask, I'd like you to accompany me on this excursion as well."
"Really? Why?" asked the bookworm, confused.
"To… umm… play the role of my girlfriend," answered Makoto, blushing as she recalled Eiko's misunderstanding. Emphasis on misunderstanding!
"Ah, right. I forgot about that."
"Also, you are a good judge of character," added Makoto. She paused. "Well, when books aren't involved, that is."
Morgana had told the others about how Akechi bought Urano's friendship with a book.
"I'm not that bad!" defended the bookworm. "I wouldn't ignore an abusive boyfriend!"
True. While Akechi did represent a potential threat to the Phantom Thieves, all he'd actually done so far was disparage them in an interview.
Ultimately, Urano agreed to a double date with Eiko and her boyfriend and was only slightly annoyed that Makoto had already arranged the double date before asking her.

The date ended up being a bit of a mixed bag.
On one hand, Makoto and Urano were able to get to know Eiko's boyfriend, Tsukasa, better. To quote Urano, he 'oozed shadiness.' Unfortunately, Tsukasa didn't do anything overtly wrong during the double date, though he did give Makoto his number. Thanks to that, she would have more chances to gather dirt on him.
Makoto was glad for Urano's assistance.

On the other hand, Makoto felt like her heart was going to burst out of her chest from Urano's 'lovey-dovey girlfriend' act.
The beautiful sight of Urano, dressed up and wearing a touch of makeup! The feeling of Urano's 'softness' as she clung to Makoto's arm the whole date! The flowery scent of Urano's soap and shampoo! The adorable 'aah' sound of Urano opening her mouth, asking to be fed! And the flavor of the resulting indirect kisses, which kept Makoto from tasting any of her actual food!
It was total sensory overload! Makoto had to concentrate on Tsukasa just to avoid melting into a puddle!
Makoto regretted giving Tsukasa her phone number.
That was what passed through her mind when she read a text from him about meeting up with her and Urano in person and getting to know them better. The thinly veiled request for a threesome made her gag, and Urano was similarly repulsed when Makoto told the bookworm about it.
(If it were just the bookworm… No! What was she thinking!? They were just friends! FRIENDS!)
"Does Eiko know about this?" asked Urano, grimacing.
Unfortunately, the offending message was just ambiguous enough for Tsukasa to pass it off as innocent to Eiko, who didn't want to believe that her boyfriend was a scumbag.
(It also helped that Urano agreed about Tsukasa being bad news. Having a second opinion made Makoto more confident that Tsukasa's message wasn't innocent.)
The conversation ended up moving from Tsukasa to the type of scheme he was probably carrying one, then from there to Makoto's father and his untimely death (most likely caused by the criminals he was investigating).
The student council president hadn't talked to anyone about her father since his passing, yet telling Urano just felt… natural?

It was a bit weird how easy it was for Makoto to share such a painful memory with the bookworm, though, considering how awkward and difficult it felt pretending to be dating her.
How could Makoto feel both extremely comfortable and extremely uncomfortable around Urano? Why did she feel that way? And why was she so relieved when Urano agreed to continue pretending to be a couple around Eiko?
(It wasn't love. It couldn't be!)
However, before Makoto could come up with an answer, she was distracted by a text from Eiko. Her friend's (hopefully) joking suggestion to have a double wedding after high school caused her brain to overheat, and Urano only added fuel to the fire by bringing their foreheads together to check if Makoto had a fever.
Morgana's PoV
"'Get along with Kana-chan'…" said Futaba. "I'm gonna do it for real this time!"
Since Urano had declared him family, Morgana had started spending more time around Futaba. As a result, he'd ended up joining the conversation about the hacker's friendship and falling out with Kana.
"Ahh!" exclaimed Futaba. "I didn't mean to tell you guys all that… N-not even Sojiro knows… This is so embarrassing! Y-you two have to help me now, got it!?"
"Of course," agreed Urano.
"Was there ever any doubt?" asked the not-cat rhetorically. "After all, it's the duty of older siblings to look after their younger sister."

"What are you talking about?" responded Morgana. "You're only old enough to be in middle school, so naturally you're younger than me."
"In what world is a grade schooler older than a middle schooler?"
"I am not a grade schooler!" yelled Morgana. Futaba snorted with disbelief, causing the not-cat to huff. "Clearly, I'm a high schooler like Lady Ann. Right, Urano?"
The two of them turned to the bookworm, who looked uncomfortable about being caught in the middle of her younger siblings' dispute.
"…We'll find out when you become human," said Urano after a long pause. Morgana and Futaba scowled, annoyed by the non-answer, prompting Urano to hurriedly explain. "I mean, we have no idea how old you are, Morgana. And even if you find out when you regain your memories… well… not-cat years don't necessarily translate into human years."
"Seriously!?" complained Morgana, frustrated by Urano's attempt to avoid taking a side. "Do you know how much I have to do for you as your minder!? There's no way that a little kid could take care of all of that! Heck, with everything I do for you, I bet I'm a year or two older than you are!"
"Bwuh!?" cried Urano, surprised by the attack on her status as oldest sibling. She glared at the not-cat. "There's no way that's true! My pride as a big sister won't allow it! I'm definitely the oldest, Morgana, and you can't change that just by declaring it!"
Okay, Morgana was willing to admit that he'd screwed up. Provoking Urano definitely wasn't the way to get her on his side.
"…Hey, Urano," interjected the hacker, a mischievous smirk on her face. "Do you think that us thinking of and repeatedly calling Morgana a little kid has an effect on his human age?"
Urano, caught off guard by Futaba's sudden comment, gave her a confused look.
"Probably?" answered the bookworm uncertainly. "Even if our cognitions don't matter, repeating it in front of Morgana could influence his own cognition. Why do you ask?"
Why was Futaba asking that?
…
…Wait a second. She wouldn't…
"In that case… Mona's a little kid!~ Mona's a little kid!~ Mona's a little kid!~"
As it turned out, she would.
"Damnit!" cursed Morgana, trying unsuccessfully to cover his ears with his paws. "Cut that out, Futaba! And why did you tell her that, Urano!?"
"…Sorry," apologized Urano, looking legitimately guilty.
.
Ultimately, the argument between Futaba and Morgana continued until Sojiro unknowingly ended it by calling everyone down for dinner.
(As expected of the oldest and most/only mature member of the Sakura family.)
Urano Motosu's PoV
I went with Makoto to another meet-up with Eiko. At Makoto's request, I dialed back the girlfriend act, wearing more casual clothes and just holding her hand instead of cuddling. Apparently, I'd been laying it on too thickly.
"Well, um… I was wondering if you could maybe lend me some cash," requested Eiko.
I kept a smile on my face but was grimacing internally. Her no-good boyfriend (whose name I forgot) had finally done something, hadn't he?
"…Does this have to do with Tsukasa?" asked Makoto cautiously, sharing my suspicion.
(Right, his name was Tsukasa.)
The answer was a resounding yes. According to Eiko, Tsukasa had claimed that he accidentally broke an expensive bottle of sake at work and needed her help paying for it.
Makoto told Eiko that it was a lie, but she stubbornly refused to listen. When Eiko argued that he called her his special 'princess,' I spoke up.
"In other words, he never calls you by your name. I bet he calls all of the girls he leeches money from 'princess' to avoid mixing their names up."
Eiko still wouldn't face reality, prompting Makoto to probe Tsukasa's story. When Eiko revealed that she hadn't talked to any of Tsukasa's coworkers about the broken bottle because he was 'too proud' to have her go crying to his boss, I couldn't stop myself from interjecting again.
"So he's too proud to go begging for leniency from his boss, but he's perfectly fine having his girlfriend pay off his debt? What a fantastic boyfriend," I said dryly.
My words shook Eiko, yet she continued clinging to Tsukasa's lies. She even lashed out at Makoto and me, especially after my 'girlfriend' brought up the threesome texts.
"Ugh! You have the grades, the looks, a cute girlfriend… and you seriously still want more!?" complained Eiko. "Tsukasa is all I have…! You can't take him from me!"
Something in me snapped. Makoto might not actually be my girlfriend, but she was my friend. I couldn't just stay silent after that!
"Wow…" I said in a tone so venomous that it stunned Eiko and Makoto, who had been about to speak. "Makoto's been doing everything she can to protect you from being taken advantage of, and yet Tsukasa is all you have? Just how little does her friendship mean to you?"

That shut Eiko up. However, even though she apologized to Makoto in a weak voice, I had a bad feeling that Eiko remained in denial about Tsukasa's true nature.
Unfortunately, I was right. Even after Makoto tricked Tsukasa into revealing that he didn't remember Eiko's name, the girl still rejected reality. Eiko's behavior was so frustrating that Makoto lost her cool and slapped her.
"Wake up!" Makoto yelled at Eiko. "You already know the truth; you just don't want to believe it! Stop lying to yourself! As for you…" She turned her glare toward Tsukasa. "…apologize to Eiko! And stay away from her from now on!"
Tsukasa responded by trying to threaten Makoto, but she didn't back down. Having failed against her, he turned to me as a target. I warned Tsukasa that I would call the police and fished my phone out of my pocket, only for him to grab my arm before I could dial the number.
Big mistake.
"Don't you dare touch her!" shouted Makoto.
Wham!
She punched Tsukasa square in the face, knocking him to the ground. I heard a sickening crunch – probably his nose breaking – when her fist connected with him, and he screamed bloody murder as he clutched his nose.
"My face! It's ruined, you bitch! I'll call the cops!"
I hoped that Tsukasa was right about his face being permanently messed up. If it was ruined, then no more women would fall for his lies.
"I come from a long line of police officers," responded Makoto, unfazed. "If you really want to start something, be my guest. I'm sure that the police will be very interested to meet you, especially after I tell them everything I know."
He left after that. I got the feeling that we wouldn't be seeing him again.
(Just to be safe, though, we should nominate Tsukasa as a Mementos target. I'm sure the others will agree that he deserves to have his heart changed.)
Eiko also left soon after, but not before apologizing to Makoto for refusing to listen. Apparently, she couldn't overlook Tsukasa threatening Makoto and me.
As for Makoto and me, we took shelter in a nearby bar to hide from the attention of onlookers who'd caught Makoto deck Tsukasa. There, we ended up talking a bit about how both of us tend to get swept up by our emotions – Makoto when she slapped Eiko, and me when… well… embarrassingly, it's happened too many times to count.

Futaba Sakura's PoV
Futaba was able to find Kana online, but what she discovered wasn't good. Kana's gambling-addicted parents had forced her to drop out of school and work off their gambling debt. They were making her model strange clothes and selling the pictures.
(The hacker made sure to destroy every digital copy of the photos that she could find.)
Things were so bad that Kana had made a request for help on the Phan-Site. She didn't list her parents' names, but Futaba was able to find them in her elementary school address book. It was a good thing the hacker had held onto it as a reminder of Kana.
'Kouta Magario' and 'Asami Magario.' Their names got a hit on the Meta-Nav, too. Their Shadows were in Mementos.
Futaba brought all of this information to Urano and Morgana, hoping to not only add Kana's parents to the list of Mementos targets, but also expedite the next Mementos heart-changing expedition.
"I'll do it," agreed Urano instantly. "We can go tomorrow."
"Don't decide that on your own!" yelled Morgana, sounding exasperated. "We need to consult the others first, and make sure that at least two of them can join us. Or do you want everyone else to get furious at us again, like with Futaba's uncle?"
Even if the entirety of the Phantom Thieves of Heart isn't free to enter the Metaverse, a smaller party may still go if it has at least four combatants. That was the rule they'd established shortly after Yusuke joined, when Urano wondered aloud how they'd keep lining up their schedules to enter the Metaverse together if the Phantom Thieves kept getting new members with every Palace.
"…On second thought, Morgana's right," said Urano, wincing at the memory of the others' fury. She pulled out her phone. "I'll text the others and figure out when they're free. But don't worry! We'll go to Mementos and change the hearts of Kana's parents on the first day we can!"
"Absolutely," affirmed Morgana. "We've got your back, Futaba."

"So, I emailed Kana, and believe it or not, she replied!" Futaba told her siblings excitedly. "We totally reconciled, just like in a shoujo manga!"
The Mementos trip actually did end up being the next day, thanks to Ann and Yusuke being free. After a hard fought battle (made easier by the Shadows being weak to Fire and Ice), Kana's parents had their hearts changed.
"Wouldn't Mementos make it more of a shonen?" asked Urano.
During their conversations, Futaba made a promise to Kana. Both of them would be returning to school, which meant the hacker would be prepping to attend Shujin.
"Either way, I'd expect it to perfectly capture my romance with Lady Ann," joked Morgana.
(The poor not-cat still didn't realize his crush was in love with his oldest sister. Futaba would tell him eventually. Once it stopped being funny. Probably.)

Makoto met Urano in the bookworm's room – which contained noticeably more books than the last time she visited – and told her about how Eiko was doing. The girl had quit her seedy job, was taking her studies seriously, and hoped to go to college and figure out what type of career to go into.
"Your slap really worked wonders," praised Urano teasingly.
"You're still not gonna let me forget that, hm?"
Makoto also informed Urano that she too was focusing on her studies. It was all so that Makoto could achieve the dream she'd discovered through her interactions with the bookworm. The student council president would become a police commissioner, heading an organization that would destroy the lawless and help rescue victims!
"Wow, that's an amazing goal," said Urano. "Your father would be proud."
Makoto wouldn't have figured any of this out without Urano. If not for the bookworm, she'd still be a clueless, uptight, student council president blindly obeying others.

At some point, Makoto had fallen for the bookworm. She had unconsciously tried to ignore those feelings, scared of the stigma attached – Sae had impressed upon Makoto how much discrimination she would face just for being a woman – but seeing Tsukasa grab Urano's arm so roughly had just made Makoto so angry…
…and so much more scared than any threat of discrimination could make her. As if a dam in her heart had burst, Makoto's feelings overflowed. It was no longer possible for her to push those feeling down.
Not that she even wanted to. Makoto was done letting others decide how her future would look.
"You can rely on me for anything you need," Makoto told Urano. "I want us to be equals. And umm… about our fake relationship. We don't need it any… Well, not that I don't, umm… That is to say that the 'fake' part isn't…"
Of course, making that particular aspect of her vision for the future into a reality was going to take the tongue-tied student council president a lot of work. Especially when the reality that she was alone with her crush in the girl's room finally hit Makoto.
Makoto fainted, her mind crashing from the combination of that realization and the embarrassment of trying to confess her feelings. When she woke up, the student council president was receiving a lap pillow from Urano, who obliviously (and cutely) scolded Makoto about overworking herself and how she shouldn't spend too much time studying.
(To her eternal shame, Makoto went along with the misunderstanding and used it as an excuse to stay in the lap pillow until it was time for her to get going.)

Futaba was going back to school, and not just in the sense that she would be a student again next school year. She was going to spend today at a school, shadowing a student, in order to fulfill the final item on her promise list.
Being okay without me around.
For that reason, she wasn't visiting Shujin or Kosei. No, she was going to an unfamiliar school full of strangers, without any safety nets… to her knowledge.
Morgana would be keeping an eye on Futaba from a safe distance, carrying a cheap phone that was set to speed dial me. I'd also gone to Chihaya and gotten a very positive fortune from her.
