Lorelai sat down at the table, echoes from the past vivid in her mind. Memories of their first date dominated her thoughts.
I'm all in. Are you scared?
She looked at Luke as he sat down across from her. Here they were again, but that didn't change everything that had happened. They had messed things up. They had hurt each other. If she was honest with herself, she was very scared. Scared that it wouldn't work out. Scared that her heart would end up broken again. Scared that they would make the same mistakes all over again.
"You okay?" Luke questioned, noticing that she had become uncharacteristically quiet.
"Yeah, yeah. I'm good," she responded.
He gave her a knowing look. He could see right through her.
"Lorelai, if this is going to work, we have to be honest with each other. What are you thinking?"
Lorelai hesitated. He was right, but she didn't want to bring up any uncomfortable topics that might ruin their back together date. She took a deep breath. If it's going to last, we have to communicate. I need to tell him things, even when it's difficult.
"I was lost in memories. Thinking about the time you told me you were all in and asked me if I was scared. Thinking that I am scared… very scared. Scared that despite everything, this still won't work out. Scared that we might mess it up again. Scared that being 'all in' isn't enough."
Lorelai spilled her feelings out to Luke. Her eyes conveyed the many emotions she felt: hurt, fear, hope, and most of all love.
"I'm scared, too," he confided. "But Lorelai, that's exactly why we have to do things right this time. I can't lose you again, and I will do everything in my power to make this work."
Luke took her hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze.
"We will face challenges, but we will face them together," he told her confidently.
His words calmed her fears. The doubts were still there, but she would do her part to make sure their relationship lasted this time.
"I want that," she said. "More than anything."
When their food arrived, Lorelai dove in eagerly.
"I'm starving! This is amazing!" she exclaimed as she munched happily on the food.
"It is amazing," Luke said, looking at her.
Luke hadn't taken a bite of his food yet, but his eyes were telling her that he wasn't talking about the food.
The date continued smoothly. Luke and Lorelai ate, talked, and enjoyed each other's company. Lorelai ordered 3 different desserts that she had to try. Luke grumbled about her eating habits half-heartedly. The smile on his face as he watched her joyfully indulge in the treats gave him away. He often put on a show of grumpiness, but in reality he liked seeing her enjoy herself. After they were done, they left the restaurant and started to drive back to Stars Hollow.
"That was great! Hmm… what was my favorite part?" Lorelai asked aloud, putting her finger to her chin in a gesture to show she was thinking.
"The food was wonderful like always," Lorelai said.
"It was good," Luke acknowledged.
"The dessert was even better," she continued.
"I'll take your word for it," he told her.
"You know what though? Being with you was the best part," she finished.
"Yeah?"
"Oh, yeah. Much better than anything we ate tonight," she elaborated.
"Wow, Lorelai Gilmore, Queen of Snacks and Coffee, enjoyed my company more than she enjoyed her food. That IS a compliment," he bantered.
"It is, Luke. In fact, I'd like to enjoy your company for the rest of the night," she said suggestively.
Luke glanced at her. He wanted to stay with her, but he also wanted to do things right. He wanted to be sure she was comfortable before they took any steps toward making things more serious between them. He wanted to stay in tune with her this time. He never wanted to be blind to what she was feeling again.
"Are you sure, Lorelai?"
"Luke, I'm sure. Stay with me tonight."
Her tone of voice and the way she looked at him, told him all he needed to know.
Luke nodded and began driving in the direction of her house.
